Wash your curtains every two weeks?! This post was made by Big Washing, for sure. Don't let them trick you into washing more than you have to! /conspiracytheory
Seriously, though, they recommend washing your curtains, things that rarely get touched, once every couple of weeks...but your pillow covers, things that are directly next to sweaty, oily bodies every single day - they only need washing once a month?
I think I mean the mattress and pillow protectors, things that go underneath the sheets and pillowcase. At least, thatโs the only way I can justify this.

Yes, at least for me, I wash my pillowcases and bedding as needed. In fact, most of the things on this list are "as needed".
Washing machine smell a little off? Clean it. Curtains dusty? Wash em. Carpets got spots? Rent a carpet cleaner.
I don't think anyone needs this list unless they are trying to make a daily chores list for a year for some kind of group home. Then it would be an asset.
Also some people are just dumb and donโt know how often things should be cleaned. Personally I think bathrooms need to be cleaned every couple of days, depending on the number, sex, and age of people using them. One female adult? Ok, once a week might be fine. Male children? Once a day minimum;)
May I suggest buying a carpet cleaner? Got one from Target for $170 (on sale, was normally $270, watched it for awhile). It's paid for itself about 6x in 2 years. Plus we loan it to family. We use it for furniture, too. Best purchase! Especially if you have pets. My dog likes to lay in the sunshine and our apartment has carpet (apartments: please stop with the fucking carpets! It's disgusting). Sometimes the smell of hot carpet dog seems to permeate the whole place. So we bathe her and stream vac and it's all fresh again for awhile.

Yes, it's kind of one of those things on the list that I just never have the 150$ for. I would really like to get the professional type, the kind you can rent, but it's much more expensive. I have the $40 to rent one overnight but I'm looking for a job right now unfortunately.
Absolutely get it. I must've rented them 25x in life before I had enough to outright buy one. Who has $150 just lying around? Or $40 for that matter. Lol. I totally get it. Good luck job hunting. Are you in Colorado by chance?

No, but I would be willing to move there for the right job lol. I am in the high desert in So Cal, I have never in my life had so much trouble finding a job since I moved here. I really want to move back to Iowa because I have family there an the job market is very good where they live, but my husband refuses.

Itโs only a little cheaper here. We make $50k net and are still trying to save up a down payment on a house. Just to give you an idea.
What kind of work are you looking for?

My absolute favorite job that I had was working inventory management and pricing at a plumbing company. I have taken several classes in microsoft excel, but most of my background is restaurant management, a job which i just physically cannot do anymore. My sister though, she works in a group home for mentally challenged adults which would be a dream job for me, as it is for her. We are very alike and both love caring for people who need cared for.
Thereโs certainly a lot of opportunity for that here. My connections would be in entry-level marketing, call centers, retail. Not the best living til I finish school.
Well, whatever you decide, I wish you happiness.

Especially because these are meant to be "neglected" areas. Notice it also doesn't recommend how often you should clean your clothes for instance. Possibly it's optimistic of the guide to assume people don't neglect their bedsheets...
I'd wash my shower curtains a lot more often than my fabric curtains. Same goes for our keyboards. I'd clean them way more often than our kitchen cabinets.

Thatโs ridiculous, I canโt imagine having to unscrew the poles and wash them every 2 weeks. What a nightmare!
I think my living room ones are dry clean only as well!
Top tip, I put fabric softener in a spray bottle and spray them every day. Just freshens them up abit. I also spray my bed with this and it always smells like your sheets have been freshly washed.
jrc000 ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 13:24:43 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Doesn't that cause build up on the fabric? I just wash my sheets regularly and they always smell clean. Plus I don't like the idea if sleeping in sheets sprayed with chemicals, even if they smell good.

Just donโt look down into the trash can when you hose it out. Very few things are worse than a face full of muk and grime because you sprayed high pressured water into a garbage can while staring right at it.
Gnockhia ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:12:55 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I'm hoping this diagram is assuming a bin liner, cause every two months is not hygienic. I wash my bins weekly, then decided having a second set was good to swap out before the weekend if needed.
Bin liners aren't environmentally friendly.
pttm12 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:49:16 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
OTOH, Iโm not going to carry my large metal kitchen trash can down 3 flights of stairs from my apartment to then lift it over my head and pour into the dumpster. Bin liners are a bit of a necessary evil to me.
Gnockhia ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:53:59 on September 24, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
We have light plastic bins we carry down one flight of stairs, put in the back of the ute, drive 200m down the road and empty into the serviced bin.
And if you use ammonia, certainly don't stick your head in while cleaning. My teenage self knows that from first-hand experience.
Cleaning a garbage can with ammonia and I took a big whiff by mistake. I couldn't see straight for like an hour and it felt like my sinuses were instantly disintegrated.
Itโs hard at first, but if you do it regularly, thereโs less to clean and you become quicker at doing it.
I donโt do everything on this list, but thereโs quite a few Iโve established habits of doing. I think the key is set a structure, and donโt expect one human to seriously do all this alone all the time. Get help. Humans are supposed to live in a community. Donโt feel bad about struggling to handle everything alone.

My wife and I are struggling to develop good cleaning habits and this comprehensive list actually seems really helpful, Im just not gonna pay attention to how often it says to do things.
Also dont pay attention to the โhowโsection either because a lot of the times its completely unnecessary to do it in that complicated of a manner
It may be more effective, but if youre spending 4 hours washing your dish washer and its 10% cleaner than if you spent 10 seconds using a cleaning detergent; I mean come on
May I offer advice as someone who did summer rental cleanings? I learned quite a bit really. Reality is, clean by how often everything is used. First, dishwasher? Do you use it often or even have one? When I did have one, I used it not really often as it was only the three of us. You don't really need to worry about it unless you have a full household. And I mean it. If you feel the need to clean it, start it up right when you get up since majority have a self cleaning feature like most ovens do. You DO NOT have to do the extra shit lol
Second, split what needs to be cleaned. Change it weekly. Bathroom you one week, kitchen her, and laundry you, vacuuming her. Rotate. It's shit when you have to do the same thing often, but this way it also doesn't feel like one it doing all the work. Split it.
Also, stop using paper towels for cleaning. It's a waste of money. Get some shitty, rough towels from Dollar general/store and cut them to your size preference. Or old towels themselves work too. Use paper towels on mirrors and windows so you don't get fibers left over as you would from towels.
Another thing, stop sweeping the bathrooms. Hair is a bitch in bathrooms, and they are gross enough as it since we shower, piss, poop, and brush our teeth in one small room. Vacuum the floor, toilet and shower floor for hair. It's a time saver and less work. Work smarter, not harder.
Friendly reminder too, close all libs to the toilet. When flushing, without closing, you're just releasing your bodily waste into the air and surroundings. Because of this? Weekly, you might want to soak tooth brushes into a rubbing alcohol solution. Same for sponges.
Wanna know anything else? I literally have so many tips up my sleeve I could go on for an hour lol the work is rough in the summer, but I got good money and learned great habits!
I'mma catch some sleep for about 6 hours and I'll try to whip something up for ya that will be much easier to follow. I'mma just ask some basic questions okay?
How many people live on your home?
What appliances do you happen to have? I'm including computers like desktops and keyboards.
Allergic or sensitivity to certain products, like bleach?
How worried are you about prices?
Would you prefer environmentally friendly products?
Animals?
Schedule for you both? Meaning, can there be a set time put aside where you can work together as a team and get it done!
Smell sensitivity? Certain smells make your nose itch and sneeze?
Upright or Canister vacuum type?
Flooring types for all rooms?
I think that is about it for what I can think of question wise lol let me know, and I'll see if I can help you both in anyway
3 people and a cat but I'm the only one that cleans. No allergies, no smell and no price issues but would like pet and environmentally safe products. Basic home appliances and an upright vacuum. Wooden floors everywhere except bathroom. Schedule-wise, I put aside 30 minutes a day to clean and every other Saturday morning.
Would like a more efficient way to clean grease in the kitchen, right now the process involves lots of scrubbing.
Sorry for the late reply, I have been really busy for the past few days, I'll give you a reply soon, if that's okay? I'll shoot for before Saturday since that's when you said you do cleanings every other
So animals can be rough. Listen though, main thing? Maintain grooming. Seriously. They have hair (obviously) that needs to be brushed! Grrooooooom theeeeem lol I even have outside cats that I groom often because not only does it keep their hair healthy, it helps their skin which is basically a scalp. Groom baby lol
Otherwise? You might want to put money into a great vacuum. Please, do some research before doing so, read reviews, see what people say about vacuums targeted for animal hair. But truthfully, I really recommend a good vacuum. My one boss used one that was a cannister vacuum that had amazing suction power, I sadly don't remember what brand it was (been a bit), but it wasn't necessarily targeted for animal! And this is why I say research it :) I know that may sound like a pain and a waste of time, trust me, I get it, but it really might benefit you in the long run
So I actually have all hardwood floors but there are tumbleweeds within hours after a sweep/mop. My mom visited and was obsessively chasing down fluff bunnies with the hose attachment.
I actually do groom my cat and dog, not daily but weekly. And even then, my dog gets betterโ my cat is relentless. His hair is everywhere. Tumbleweeds. Static-ing to my arms bc I dared to pat him. Flying around him as he pads around. This cat is a shedding monster. But I love him and I want to pet him.
So funny enough, i love animals and because I have outside cats, I actually had to learn about their skin and hair. Why? Because I have to keep up with it because they are exposed to the outside elements lol
Yes, some animals shed more than others. Because of this though, you have to pay attention to their skin. I am not saying you aren't, don't think that :) what I am saying is that there is food products that can help with hair loss in cats. Sometimes it's caused by dry skin, sometimes and allergy of some kind you may not notice because it's so utterly slight (had this issue with 1 who seemingly is allergic shellfish).
Cats normally shed once or twice a year, just to get rid of dead hair. If it's excessive, yeah, there might be a problem. Usually? It's just diet. Older, younger, middle aged cats need different levels of nutrition for each cycle of life. Instead of vacuum research, you might wanna do cat food research. Adding toppers to dry food to give them a boost in nutrition, or switching dry food completely! It'll be tough, but worth it.
I had to do this twice. First because 1 little girl decided she hated dry food =_= I had to mix the broth topper so she would eat any of it again lol twice, because she was losing hair around the beginning of spring. Like a lot. Itching and making bald spots. I needed to up her nutrition and change it to combat the weather changes and allergies to floral things outside. Fucking mess man lol but it helped!
Fuck the environment, animals, don't care about smell, will even pay a little more just make it quick and effective

Any tips for the ring that develops at the water line of the toilet? Do I have a failing seal?
I've heard some people have short-term success with a pumice stone, but it can very easily strip the glaze and ruin the porcelain and make stains worse.
IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO USE BLEACH. IT'S OKAY. I GOTCHU. lol so Borax! This is better for hard water stains (brown), but it can still be used for any of the cleaning rings of toilets lol it has been used as a cleaning agent for decades. It generally does the same thing as bleach, without the bleach smell. 1/4 cup in toilet, swish it around. Add like 1 cup of white vinegar and let that shit sit for like 20 minutes. Scrub real damn good and flush. This may take a few times to take hold, but if it doesn't seem to approve after like the 3rd time? You'll need a different solution lol which, I have, but let's just start here. I still recommend toilet tablets though to keep up with the toilets' environment.
nombre1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:30:53 on September 26, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! I had some luck training down the water in the bowl, then soaking paper towels in vinegar, and placing them around the ring, but it was temporary.
I've heard Clorox bleach tablets "void the warranty", though I've never heard of any kind of toilet manufacturer offering a new flapper, valve, or tank gasket for free, so I'm not sure it would really matter. I haven't heard of borax though, I'll have to give that a shot!
Thanks!

Great tips! I have questions if you are willing =)
How do you clean grossโd up reuseable towels? I use paper towels to clean gross looking stuff (pink stains around the white sink hole, I think itโs fungal or mould) and paper towels for wiping down the outside of the toilet, and I canโt imagine putting reuseable towels with that muck on it through my washing machine that is going to wash my underwear at some point in the future.
If using microfibre cloths to dust, how do you get the dust off? Sadly, putting them through the washing machine does not seem to work.
You mentioned sweeping the bathroom for hair is a waste of time and to use a vacuum cleaner. I have a dyson and hair wraps itself around the cleaning end and it takes forever to get the hair off. So I much prefer to just sweep. I also donโt have a toilet in that bathroom so it doesnโt feel like Iโm pushing germs around.
You're thinking too much in my opinion. , Washing machine is a washing machine because it is meant to clean dirty. You're overwhelming your thoughts of "germs" and not really letting the things do their jobs. Even the basic stacked washing/dryer machines have enough settings to simply clean them.
If you ever feel that "maybe my washing machine is dirty", you can do a load of nothing but hot water a a cup of white vinegar. Cheap, cost effective, won't hurt the machine. I can tell you right now, cleaning summer rentals in a shore town, if we used paper towels that often? It just wouldn't be worth it because it isn't cost effective.
If you still feel like you can't handle the thought of it, buy paper towels specifically for your bathroom. Cheap ones. Like $1. Trust me, they do the same amount of work as any other brands for the price. So go cheap. And this way you won't be using the same towels you use in your kitchen.
Pink stains is a result of a bacteria that thrives on high moisture environments! Common. It's okay. Don't panic. Clean up, and this is where bleach is actually wonderful because if you use a bleach solution and keep up with it? It should keep it in check. We had a bathroom in one rental that had a similar issue. And we just used the bleach solution weekly on it, which seemed to keep it at bay!
Microfiber items should have care instructions when upon buying. If you seem to not be able to find them, try the brands website. The reason I say this is because not every microfiber product is the same, as many as used for only 1 specific task (i.e. TV screens). That said, washing machine could also ruin the ability of the product. So you must try to find cleaning instructions first.
Dyson Upright vacuum I assume? Well, truth be told, I really dislike upright vacuums after all these years of not using. They don't bode well during summer cleanings as they do not pick up enough, and they are unnecessarily heavy. HOWEVER, NO MATTER THE VACUUM, YOU'LL ALWAYS HAVE HAIR CAUGHT. That's just the reality of hair. For most vacuums, there should be instructions on how to dismantle the bottom piece to get to the brush that the hair is caught around. If not? You'll sadly have to cut the hair, then pull it out. For Dyson's, it is actually called the "Triggerhead". So if you happen to be unable to find care instructions, try Google or YouTube because that'll be your best bet.
(For the record, I just like cannister vacuums. Things are magic for hair at this point in my life lol)

You are amazing. Thank you!! =) Saving your tips down. In case you havenโt heard of the sub: r/cleaningtips would love you.
Heating baseboards, huh? They are usually metal or plastic I believe, and have a thick coat of paint on them to match what the original color paint of the walls are; or possibly just white plastic! So you'll have to be careful with that part as some products can just eat paint away, especially if old if it is metal.
If you possibly mean the dust that tends to collect within them, then I might have an idea. Compressed Air Cannisters. The plastic ones can sometimes have the covers taken off. Look up a video to be sure you do not break anything when attempting this, otherwise, it is time to call the plumber or electrician lol otherwise, if you can take the cover off, spray the compressed air onto dust to loosen it.
Great list! I'd add that cleaning mirrors and windows is even better using newsprint--no streaks! I know, nobody reads newspapers anymore. But almost every town has Greensheets, or a bingo report, or a weekly paper, etc. Try it!
I actually just use really shitty and cheap paper towels lol my apartment where I live specifically doesn't get papers anymore. But I have found this works just as well. Sometimes, cheap and shitty works great lmao
An hour? Is it just you? Just you, start with cleaning top layers of everything. Dust down and wipe down counters and tables, everything onto the floor. Use a swifter duster for beat results, and a basic All Purpose spray for basic wipe down. Then vacuum the bitch lol trust, best way, top to down. Sounds quick, but those 3 things will take the hour, promise.
Scrubbing bubbles are life! I grew up with really hard water, but my parents refused to get a water softener. Cleaning our bathrooms was absolute hell until we discovered this!

Those are both mildly acidic so will mildly sanitize. And it knocks crap off the blades so will at least mitigate amount of surface area that bacteria like to grow on.
I came up to "vacuum monthly" and I was like "depending on the traffic of the carpet, you might even vacuum more than monthly" then no, it's telling me to clean the vacuum itself every month and like... what

I'm a dirty slob, and I know I need to vacuum more than once a month. Of all of the things on that list to take umbrage with.....
I dump boiling water down my sink once a week. I have no idea if it does anything but it makes me feel better.
thredder ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:32:03 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Pour some baking soda down there first, then white vinegar. Do the boiling water last. That will unchunk any crap in your pipes and really clean things out.
Drano and such is safe for sink too. I do that once a year if I detect it's getting funky. Mainly I stick to vinegar and baking soda like the other poster said.
Who washes their curtains every 2 weeks? Then they need to be ironed and hung back up. That's a lot of work. It's not one window! I usually do it twice a year... If I'm really busy once a year.
And I only vacuum then once a month, if I remember. And not that thoroughly.
If we did all the things that are recommended for everything I own I literally don't have enough time in a day. It's a little ridiculous.
The garbage disposal one is easy to incorporate. When you have ice in your cup, dump it into the disposal and grind it up instead of just letting it melt. vinegar/lemon seem like overkill - it doesn't really need to be sanitized

This. A little cleaning every Saturday or Sunday and youโre done. If you skip it for too long youโll have to spend hours getting back to zero. Also clean as you go when cooking. It makes everything easier.
If you enjoy cleaning your own body, why can't you enjoy cleaning your own home? The only reason cleaning is not enjoyable is because we let things get disgusting. But keeping the things we love in good condition is enjoyable.

Because I'm not covered in hot water when it's happening.
Just pick one day a week to do it. Once you do it a few times it becomes habit and only takes an hour or two. Plus things are cleaner so the more you keep to the schedule the easier it is.

But when I'm putting things away, where does soul crushing depression go?
I also saved it for no reason! In the off chance I look behind the fridge, I want to know how often I would have been cleaning those fridge coils... Twice a year? I thought it said never.
They donโt unless theyโre a full time homemaker which basically doesnโt exist at this point.
If you take everything on this list and push it down one or two timeframe categories it might start to make a little sense. I think the creator must have compiled this based on expert recommendations on each individual thing unless they are trying to fill time while taking care of a baby or on meth.

When one person works, and the other is stay at home. Or youโre so rich you have staff. We have a bi-weekly housekeeper but Iโm sure all this shit isnโt done. This is basically a full time + job.
When one person works, and the other is stay at home.

bjeebus ยท 29 points ยท Posted at 07:38:37 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Children are barely worth the pennies we pay them. They really are terrible labor. You'll do a lot better going and poaching cleaning staff from a cheap motel.
A little bit of time each day + reminders app + you donโt need to do everything quite as frequently as this guide suggests, at least for most things.
I have reminders to clean various filters, to run the bed stuff through the washing machine, to de-scale the hot water kettle, etc. And the whole place gets a vacuuming once a week. I could do a better job of cleaning the petsโ blanket and could do some dusting occasionally but other than that I think it works ok.
The key is to spread it out, have a schedule, and, ideally, have your partner or flat mate or whatever participate as well. And remember that SOME cleaning is better than NO cleaning.
Before I started with the reminders/cleaning regime I spent various evenings and weekends tidying up the utility closet, going through old papers and filing them away (and getting a filing system together (and buying something to put it all into)), and just... tidying up. I was ok with doing a bit at a time because I felt like I was making real progress towards my โhave shit tidyโ goal.
do one thing at a time. trust me, j have zero motivation to do anything and adhd and I get a lot of things done by doing small stuff rather than cluster and overwhelm myself
Yeah that makes sense when you're picking up laundry or moving a dirty dish but is far less doable when we're talking cleaning the hood vent of your oven or flushing your hot water heater

The trick is to not have anything to do so it's not such a pain stopping to scrub down the inside of your cabinets before you head to the bathroom in the morning.
Also check behind your toilet. I've known a few people who didn't know the floor behind the toilet was very slowly rotting away from unnoticeable water getting back there. One had a leak around the base, one actually had the washers on their tank wear away and the tank was dripping from the screws.
As someone with a 5 year old son, it didn't even occur to me to mention this. I deep scrub around the toilet once a month along with daily wiping. Also vinegar on the floor can help the smell.
This is so much worse for mine. I had to teach him to stand. He's 5 so it's like the size of his thumb so no gravity to naturally pull that thing down. When he poops, I have to remind him to point it down with his hand or he shoots the wall.
This is going to sound weird but I would put my kids on the toilet backwards when they were little, facing the tank. It was easier for them to balance and reduced those types of incidents.
The down side is that the pants and underwear have to come off completely and sometimes there's not enough time!
My kid has started being proactive in taking his pants off fully each time already. His problem is always that the force of the stream at the start is greater than expected and ricochets off the toilet lid. Then at the end when it's a trickle, he's not close enough to not trickle the floor right in front of him. If he doesn't take the pants off, it's not uncommon to spritz his pants a bit.
That would be delicious, but no, I have a popcorn house.

If your mattress is less than 20 years old, itโs very likely itโs one sided and doesnโt need to be flipped. If your mattress is 20+ years old, itโs time to replace it.
They mean rotate it - so the part that was at the bottom of the bed is now at the top. You're not flipping it, so the pillow top is still on top, you've just rotated it 180 degrees.
Rainnefox ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:34:07 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Oh, okay! That makes more sense! I guess I was still caught on the image of flipping the mattress over and confused myself!
It's bad for houses. I had it at my old house. The faucets get caked up quickly, the shower, bath, and sinks get stained, the pipes get the minerals built up, and it tastes bad.
Itโs too much calcium/lime. Causes gross white build up on the shower, in the pipes, in your coffee maker, your washing machine, pots/pans. Even my plant pots.
I'm no scientist, but I guess you can add that shit.
EmDashxx ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:23:18 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Trust me, you don't. It's kinda nasty. If you let it evaporate out of the cup, you'll just see all this white stuff left behind. The water in Chicago was so bad, I don't miss that at all.
Yeah. It might have a different taste. But I know that some water softeners leave water smelling and tasting of sulfur, so that's not desirable either. A lot of people prefer soft water to hard water for their skin/hair in the shower. Hard water can leave your hair a little more stringy and coarse. It is also more prone to water spots on dishes when they come out of the dish washer. It mostly varies by location whether you have soft or hard water, and it doesn't really matter that much.

A friend of mine was picking through some local government website where they sell "proper water softeners" for the area (Southern Ontario) and he noticed that they are removing the same minerals that the government run water treatment plant is apparently adding to the local water supply. He is a bit nutty, but it's worth researching what's your municipality is up to.
Lolol itโs good that youโre asking questions. Donโt mind the snarky remarks. Google is your best friendโ just try to read from multiple places to try to find the least shady source.
Not sure if you think thatโs too often or not often enough, but I have a duvet and I was my duvet cover often (Iโd love to say every 2 weeks, but sometimes itโs more like monthly if Iโm too busy) but the duvet itself only gets washed on Christmas vacay and the start of summer holidays (Iโm a teacher so these are consistent time I have off).

I work with a girl (20's) that didn't know you could wash comforters. She was just throwing them away and getting new when they got dirty. (She comes from $$, was always taken care of and had "people" to worry about those sorts of things for her.)
I think by pillow covers it means the pillows themselves if they don't have a removable long term cover? It does say mattress cover and not sheets tho, but yes sheets and pillow cases should be changed/washed at least every two weeks, if not weekly
I think that means mattress protector/pillow protectors, not actual bedsheets. At least, I hope so.

I hate washing my mattress protector. Its one of those heavy duty, waterproof, cooling gel ones. Which means it holds buckets of water in all of the crevices, and I have to go down to the dryer and flip it around every 30 minutes , and it takes like 3 hours to dry. It doesn't help that I'm on the second floor and my washer is in my basement.
Iโm a clean freak & the list is a little too much imo.

Right, no one's going to do the outdoor trash can, for instance. Or the shower head (which makes sense in theory, but I doubt people actually clean).
Iโm surprised this wasnโt on the list AND I had to come down so far to find it. This is one of those things that will impact you heavily the longer you donโt do it and unlike most other appliances/accessories that you could just replace has the most potential to rear itโs head at the worst time and cost a pretty penny to clean the coils of your AC unit (which isnโt typically covered by home warranty).

I wouldnt think that tends to be neglected. Then again, I wouldn't think a few of these would be neglected. I'm a fairly gross person, but knew a lot of these. Like, who isn't cleaning the couches or beds?
Be careful though. I bought a smaller vacuum to clean my vacuum and then realized I would need a dust buster to clean my smaller vacuum. This continued for a few more months and now I have a Russian nesting doll type of situation. I am slowly going broke and the people at Hoover have blocked my number. They only make vacuums so small... I think this may be what ends up killing me.
Soooo, anyone got any tips for getting grout off an enamel tub? There's a stray splotch of it on mine and it's been driving me nuts but I don't want to fuck up the finish
Love mine. Although you still have to maintain the roomba. Clean the brush, empty the container, make sure the wheels arenโt clogged up with hair. I didnโt know you had to do all that when I first got it and I was like โhuh why isnโt it being as effective now 2 months later as it was when I first got it?โ The whole brush was basically one big knot of hair.
tirwander ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:24:40 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah... About time to do a thorough cleaning of mine. But I trade that happily to vacuuming daily. Love my Roomba and always tell people they should get one.

If there's one thing on that list I wish people would take seriously...it's their chimneys. Every fall and winter my department gets 10 to 15 calls for chimney fires.
Once a year, please, at least have it professionally cleaned, usually in the spring. If the chimney sweep/professional cleaner recommends the chimney be inspected before your first light later that year...take them up on it. It is not a scam.
I've been to structure fires started because the chimney was never inspected and the interior of the chimney caught on fire and spread through a hole in the chimney, into the attic, and then the rest of the house. Please take it seriously. It's often overlooked.
Yep. I have one and am usually concerned about that too.
People think chimney sweeps only do fireplace chimneys. One thing people don't usually know is that chimney sweeps can also clean your dryer flue and prevent a lint fire. So have them do that as well.

Iโm so torn! The part of me with pets is like you are nuts if you think Iโm washing my comforter only 2x a year and vacuuming once a month.... but then again Iโm not cleaning my furniture every 2 weeks thatโs nuts who has time for that?!
Canisters, the filter, etc.. I know the outside of my vacuum gets pretty dirty so I wipe it down every so often. I also have to clean hair out of the attachments every month or so.
Theyโre amazing! Instead of trying to scrape every bit of leftover food off a plate or bowl and into the trash (or else it can clog your sink and ainโt nobody got time for that) and having a soggy heavy trash bag waiting to rip open as you pull it out of the can and dumping all its contents onto the kitchen floor, you just rinse it all into the sink, flip the switch to chew it all up and off it goes!
Theyโre only scary if something falls into them and you have to reach in to grab it and if youโre like me you have an irrational fear that, although itโs never ever happened before, this moment might be the moment the electricity goes haywire and all the devices in the house spontaneously turn on. But that doesnโt actually ever happen, you just stick your hand in, grab the fork or ring or whatever got knocked in, then wash your hands and go about your carefree life because you donโt have to painstakingly clean every dish before you clean them for real.
Sooo, it doesnโt mention buttholes. Is my bi-weekly schedule still effective or should I be moving to an after-every-poop wipe? (Which seems unnecessary to me tbh)
I'm going to assume baking soda given the expense of baking powder
KaiserTom ยท 29 points ยท Posted at 03:58:20 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*
Pet bowls should be semi-weekly or even weekly. It's really pretty unnecessary to clean them daily, especially considering the surfaces dogs are willing to eat anything off of anyways. They don't need sanitary bowls to eat out of and if anything may even lead them to be more susceptible to pathogens when they inevitably eat random grass or other things outdoors.
Honestly a lot of these seem overly neat freaky. If your kitchen cabinets get that greasy from you cooking for only a week fine, but you are a pretty messy person if you do so, not to mention not all cabinets are located near problematic locations.
Man idk. On the one hand I wouldnโt eat out of those bowls. But at the same time I watch my dog eat literal shit and love it so I think heโs okay eating from the same unwashed bowl every day for a week or so. Iโve also known dogs who take the food and spill it out of the bowls onto the ground and eat it off the ground.
My dads dog would take a mouth full of food out of his bow (over the tile) and carry it to the carpet, drop it, eat it piece by piece, then go back for another full mouthful, repeat until he was done eating. First we thought he just didnโt like they bowl, we tried all sorts of different bowls, then we thought maybe the cold tile hurts his geriatric feet and he doesnโt like to stand on it, so we moved his food bowl over the carpet. When we moved it, heโd just carry his mouthful further away to another spot and eat it there.
Dogs are weird.
My sisters dog would wait behind other dogs as they squatted to poop, and as soon as they dropped one, heโd rush in and gobble it up.
Dogs are gross. And the best boys, but theyโre gross.
One of my dogs does this! I don't get it. Full mouth of food, drops it all over the floor then goes to town on the spilled kibble. She likes to also drop it on her dog bed which is near her bowl too.

In all my 4 decades on earth I have never seen a dryer catch fire from lint build up. And Iโve lived in some shit holes
Edit: I never said it doesnโt or wonโt happen. Iโve just never seen it personally. My familyโs owned rentals and had their fair share of problems with renters. I understand what it mean to have shitty renters.
We had it happen, but it was in a rental. Our dryer was kept clean but the vent through the wall had to go a ways inside the wall to reach outside and apparently the landlord had never checked it or cleaned it between renters. We were the lucky family living there when the lint in the vent tubing inside the wall caught on fire. Everyone was okay, the fire department got there fast and took care of it quickly, no one was hurt. I stiill haven't been able to bring myself to start a load of laundry in the dryer before going to bed ever since.
I've seen dryers overheat & stop working (permanently) from it. & dryers that were used by complete morons who didn't know about lint traps/screens that burped enough lint into the duct/vent line that the line had to be replaced. I own a property management company - i show every renter the lint screen now. It saves me time & money.
I'm in a rental and the dryer is definitely backed up with lint that gets hot. I smelled it tonight and thought "yikes, good thing I'm moving." (I hang dry most stuff, so i don't use my dryer very often. )
Tippytom ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:25:51 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Main reason for cleaning the lint screen is you want the clothes to dry on one cycle
some of the stuff are a just a given. for instance pet bowls? I have 4 pets and I clean their food bowls daily and clean and change water bowl daily ad well to prevent it from having biofilm/ yucky stickiness. i mean, you would do the same for your kids right?
This post is such fucking bullshit. Half the "reasons" are about items collecting germs. If you're not eating food off of it then who gives a shit? Bacteria and fungus is everywhere, and on everything. You're breathing in loads of them right now. There's trillions living on your skin and on the surfaces you touch every second. It's literally healthy to be around a large assortment of bacteria and other microscopic organisms.
Wash your hands after taking a shit, don't let certain foods sit at room temperature for long periods, protect against HIV and other immune destroying illnesses. That's all you need. The bacteria on your fucking curtains, floors, and cabinets is not going to harm you. Ever.
Too bad most mattresses you canโt flip anymore. Part of the reason is to cut material cost down, but the main reason is the US in 2007 put more strict fire regulations for mattresses so now you have to have a fire retardant of some kind at the bottom and sides of the mattress. If a mattress is cheap and flippable, be careful it may have gone under some nasty chemical treatments to meet those regulations. If it is using natural materials like wool it can still be flippable because wool is not considered an igniter. For even wear and tear rotate your bed every 2-4 months, have a protector on the bed and for the love of god use proper support. Most mattresses have foam now a days and we sweat about 2 cups a night, that goes into the mattress and degrades the foam over a period of time. Your mattress doubles in weight after about 6-8 years and thatโs all dust mites, dust mite byproducts and anything else nasty you can think of over that period of time. Do not put a new bed on old box springs or if on a platform, make sure it has more than 2-3 inches between slats. If it is more than that get a mini foundation or cut a piece of wood to length to get an extra bit of support. If anyone reads this I hope I taught you something today!

You know some of the house hold choirs you listed here are really important to actually maintain a proper and clean home. The dryer vent one is important, especially if you have a long distance from the vent to the outdoor exhaust. Also, try not to have the dryer vent connecting to the wall above the dryer because gravity can make it collect there.

TIL many people's homes are disgusting. Some of these, sure, but who doesn't know to clean their toilette or bedsheets?!
I'm going to disagree with "every two weeks" for doorknobs and light switches. My kids and their friends are filthy beasts. Doorknobs, light switches, and faucet handles get sprayed with Lysol every two days.
I grew up with two total neat freaks. The vacuuming 4-5 times a week kind. The kind that insist you spray bleach in the toilet after every flush. The kind that measured the grass after you mowed.
This is insanity, pure and simple. If youโre gonna clean this often and this much, go live in a padded room in a loony bin. Itโll be much less stressful... for everyone.

Can confirm the garbage disposal cleaning with ice cubes. And it works FANTASTICALLY!
I don't clean it regularly like I should. But I do use a commercial cleaner in a package that you stuff in the disposal, run a thin stream of hot water, turn it on, let it bubble until it stops and voila it's lemony-fresh. BUT...
One time in the last year it sounded like it wasn't running properly. Seemed to take forever to work. And this thing was rock solid for years. Never had to worry about it.
I found the ice cube tip on the internet. The source I read said it also sharpens the blades. Tried it. Took 2 loads of ice and everything was corrected. I was amazed by how well it worked!

I would have like to add:
Time frame to clean a natural gas or oil furnace;
( cleaning these furnaces, and draining and filling the water from the in-house heat is something not well known at all )
Time frame to clean out the septic tank or the sewer lines from the house;
( houses with clothes washer need attention almost every year because not all the washed lint and garbage goes to the city sewer, and narrows the sewer lines causing clogs and back ups ).

I'm hoping this diagram is assuming a bin liner, cause every two months is not hygienic. I wash my bins weekly, then decided having a second set was good to swap out before the weekend if needed.
Bin liners aren't environmentally friendly.

OTOH, Iโm not going to carry my large metal kitchen trash can down 3 flights of stairs from my apartment to then lift it over my head and pour into the dumpster. Bin liners are a bit of a necessary evil to me.

Bathroom? This will literally make your life a shit ton easier as I never met a boss that didn't use it. Yes, you can use it on toilets and sinks, works just as well.

I think that is about it for what I can think of question wise lol let me know, and I'll see if I can help you both in anyway
wakeuplove ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:01:08 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Phoneas__and__Frob ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:13:04 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Lmao same
So animals can be rough.
Teekayuhoh ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:24:45 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Phoneas__and__Frob ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:05:09 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
They all really loved this brand of food topper, I have tried others, but they seem to like the most watery texture of the food, not thick. Trial and error is a bitch lol
Teekayuhoh ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:31:10 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Gasp i think youโre right about the food; I changed him from all wet food to dry. He hasnโt lost any weight so I didnโt think much into it.

Any tips for the ring that develops at the water line of the toilet? Do I have a failing seal?
I've heard some people have short-term success with a pumice stone, but it can very easily strip the glaze and ruin the porcelain and make stains worse.
any thoughts?
Phoneas__and__Frob ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:57:24 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Is it pink or brown? Pink indicates a bacteria (normal on such environment) growth. Clean with bleach solution, scrub or use magic eraser real damn good (yes you'll have to get down on your knees because first time cleaning like this is just a bitch lol), and if you can, I really recommend you find toilet tank tablets that use bleach as well, Clorox has their own for it, but I am sure other off brands will do the same, maybe not as long, but bleach is bleach. But here's Clorox ones just so you get the gist of them.
I prefer using these regardless because it consistently helps keep the toilet clean with each flush.

Thanks cleaning guru!
Phoneas__and__Frob ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:30:49 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

How can someone easily and correctly clean heating baseboards? Thank you!
Phoneas__and__Frob ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:41:22 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Better yet, I managed to find an easy step by step guide that anyone can follow that uses compressed air care instructions. Try it out. Might be useful, if not, then I suck lmao

You can use regular ice to break apart sediment, then one of those foam packet things. Takes like 2 minutes.
And there are cleaners for the dishwasher too...run it empty with the stuff. Just takes a cycle.

The garbage disposal one is easy to incorporate. When you have ice in your cup, dump it into the disposal and grind it up instead of just letting it melt. vinegar/lemon seem like overkill - it doesn't really need to be sanitized

Just pick one day a week to do it. Once you do it a few times it becomes habit and only takes an hour or two. Plus things are cleaner so the more you keep to the schedule the easier it is.

They donโt unless theyโre a full time homemaker which basically doesnโt exist at this point.
If you take everything on this list and push it down one or two timeframe categories it might start to make a little sense.

Also check behind your toilet. I've known a few people who didn't know the floor behind the toilet was very slowly rotting away from unnoticeable water getting back there. One had a leak around the base, one actually had the washers on their tank wear away and the tank was dripping from the screws.
salamanderme ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 04:07:39 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
And wipe down the walls/floor/area around the toilet. Pee and toilet water splash. Things can get pretty gross behind the toilet.
WimbletonButt ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 04:35:38 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
As someone with a 5 year old son, it didn't even occur to me to mention this. I deep scrub around the toilet once a month along with daily wiping. Also vinegar on the floor can help the smell.
noyogapants ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:22:12 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Try to teach your kid to pee sitting down- at least just at home. Encourage any males to do the same. It will save so much mess and smell!
WimbletonButt ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 20:20:33 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
This is so much worse for mine. I had to teach him to stand. He's 5 so it's like the size of his thumb so no gravity to naturally pull that thing down. When he poops, I have to remind him to point it down with his hand or he shoots the wall.
noyogapants ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:07:45 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
This is going to sound weird but I would put my kids on the toilet backwards when they were little, facing the tank. It was easier for them to balance and reduced those types of incidents.
The down side is that the pants and underwear have to come off completely and sometimes there's not enough time!
WimbletonButt ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:28:39 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Philinhere ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 05:51:04 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

If your mattress is less than 20 years old, itโs very likely itโs one sided and doesnโt need to be flipped. If your mattress is 20+ years old, itโs time to replace it.
Cpt_Lennox ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 11:17:29 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Even mattresses with tops and bottoms are supposed to be rotated though. Mattress Firm recommends every 4-6 months.
Rainnefox ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 16:21:47 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

What do you mean?
CallDownTheHawk ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:24:12 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Most of this seems excessive, yeah, but I'm trying to figure out what the fuck a water softener is
fuuuuuckendoobs ยท 52 points ยท Posted at 04:49:53 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
In some regions, you get 'hard water' which is water with a lot of minerals. A water softener neutralises those minerals.
ThomasSiege ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 04:54:41 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
What if you want mineraled water?
Piratey_Pirate ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 06:18:20 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
It's bad for houses. I had it at my old house. The faucets get caked up quickly, the shower, bath, and sinks get stained, the pipes get the minerals built up, and it tastes bad.
ThomasSiege ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:37:03 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Got it. You don't want mineraled water.
yiliu ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 07:41:01 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Mineraled water will eat your appliances, your pipes, and your taps for lunch.
Teekayuhoh ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 14:13:15 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Itโs too much calcium/lime. Causes gross white build up on the shower, in the pipes, in your coffee maker, your washing machine, pots/pans. Even my plant pots.
fuuuuuckendoobs ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 05:01:09 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

ThomasSiege ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:01:01 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Down here we usually get brown water when the water's bad. It'd be weird to have water that just tastes awful.
Troppsi ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:32:00 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Where do you put the softener?
andysaurus_rex ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 06:05:23 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Hard water has a lot of calcium and magnesium in it. Water softener removes that. Basically it causes water spots and buildup in showers and sinks.
macak333 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:44:39 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Is hard water safe for drinking?
andysaurus_rex ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:01:53 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

This is one of those things that will impact you heavily the longer you donโt do it and unlike most other appliances/accessories that you could just replace has the most potential to rear itโs head at the worst time and cost a pretty penny to clean the coils of your AC unit (which isnโt typically covered by home warranty).
leftkck ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:36:29 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I wouldnt think that tends to be neglected. Then again, I wouldn't think a few of these would be neglected. I'm a fairly gross person, but knew a lot of these. Like, who isn't cleaning the couches or beds?
shadow1psc ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:45:32 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Youโd be surprised. Iโm not ashamed to admit I knew nothing about the AC filter in my first house, no one told me anything about it.

Put duct tape on a chisel, or flathead screwdriver, and give it some light taps from the side
VikaWiklet ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:11:39 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Just use a single edged razor at a low angle. It will take it right off without disturbing the surface of the tub.

DreadPirateGriswold ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:55:10 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Yep. I have one and am usually concerned about that too.
People think chimney sweeps only do fireplace chimneys. One thing people don't usually know is that chimney sweeps can also clean your dryer flue and prevent a lint fire. So have them do that as well.

Venomenon- ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 07:19:37 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

andysaurus_rex ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 06:03:03 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Pm_me_baby_pig_pics ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 08:13:49 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Spam_is_meat ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 13:02:37 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
One of my dogs does this! I don't get it. Full mouth of food, drops it all over the floor then goes to town on the spilled kibble. She likes to also drop it on her dog bed which is near her bowl too.

Edit: I never said it doesnโt or wonโt happen. Iโve just never seen it personally. My familyโs owned rentals and had their fair share of problems with renters. I understand what it mean to have shitty renters.
Fitzwoppit ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 05:03:36 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
RaqMountainMama ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:10:50 on September 23, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I've seen dryers overheat & stop working (permanently) from it. & dryers that were used by complete morons who didn't know about lint traps/screens that burped enough lint into the duct/vent line that the line had to be replaced. I own a property management company - i show every renter the lint screen now. It saves me time & money.

What I usually use to keep on track are Calender apps and this app called To-Do by Microsoft which helps remind me and keep on track to keeping my home clean. Really recommend it and this is a pretty cool guide nevertheless

I don't know wtf is wrong with all the people in this comment thread. I study for 40-50 hours a week, work 10-20, play PC games, work out, cook for myself and enjoy the outdoors. There were two things on this list that I hadn't done (curtains and outside bins) it doesn't take long to keep your place clean, yeah the list is a little excessive but I bet all the people complaining here don't do this shit even half as often as it's suggesting, which would still be a fine amount. Keeping your place clean isn't hard people....

The dryer vent one is important, especially if you have a long distance from the vent to the outdoor exhaust. Also, try not to have the dryer vent connecting to the wall above the dryer because gravity can make it collect there.

Time frame to clean a natural gas or oil furnace; ( cleaning these furnaces, and draining and filling the water from the in-house heat is something not well known at all )
Time frame to clean out the septic tank or the sewer lines from the house; ( houses with clothes washer need attention almost every year because not all the washed lint and garbage goes to the city sewer, and narrows the sewer lines causing clogs and back ups ).
Cleaning computers, TV's, Monitors, audio equipment;
Cleaning house siding with a pressure washer is the house has plastic or wooden siding;
Repainting stairs;
Fire/smoke detector battery replacement;
There are a lot of others...
