It's just a weird, kinda cringy picture of Peyton Manning. There really is no history behind it other than the fact that no one enjoys looking at it, so we instead FORCE you to look at it. Try not to think too much into it.
It's only popular because of the misdirection, just like a rickroll. The picture itself isn't particularly interesting or funny, the meme just took off though.
It's a picture from the 2013 divisional game between the Ravens and the Broncos. It was especially cold so Peyton had this mask on while he was warming up. Someone shared it on the subreddit, people thought it was funny, and it caught on. Basically just a rick roll but the picture was pretty funny by itself.
Hell, today is the first time I've seen the regular one outside of r/nfl. I never knew it was a Reddit-wide thing.

I recently had someone steal an entire novel's worth of my short stories and put it up on Amazon for sale. Back in college, my professors could upload student essays to an online service to check them for plagiarism, but apparently this is too much trouble for one of the biggest companies in the world.
I mean, it does right now, it's just that the only content creators with recourse to do that are rich ones, and you don't even have to plagiarize from the rich ones for them to screw you over, they can just lie and say you did. The threat of being sued by a major corporation is enough to intimidate lots of companies into dropping you.
Thanks. I sent them an email about it, and they took down the stolen book. But they didn't ban the "author" from the site. He still has another book for sale, although fortunately not one of mine. So Amazon has done nothing to stop him from stealing from other authors.

As a Baker, I think it's so the texture is right.
Without the hole, it would be more like a roll. It would get too fluffy in the middle as it proofs. By being wheel shaped, it ensures the texture is consistently chewy throughout the bagel.

Yep, so are pretzels. The boiling process is what gives it the smooth / waxy crust. You only boil it for a short amount of time, then they get put in an oven to bake the inside.

Pretzles aren't boiled (at least the original German thing), but put in lye, then baked. (NaOH, don't toy around with that stuff and no, baking soda is not nearly strong enough, even if you boil it to turn into washing soda, I tried).
The reason behind that is that the maillard reaction likes base environments, as such you get more taste goodness than you could ever get by mere heat alone.
Both procedures cause the crust to be mostly non-permeable for water, which keeps moisture inside and dryness outside, resulting in a very thin, flexible, crust.

No, Brezel (BY/AT: Brezn or Breze, CH: Bretzel) is Pretzel and refers to the form. Lye pretzel is usually over-specific as that's the default, and implied.

Actually microwaves have hot/cool zones, which vary based on their model (some better than others), due to the way microwaves are reflecting around.
Since microwaves cook by interacting with and subsequently heating water molecules, which are all up in your food already, it doesn't matter what shape your food is in, just where it is in the microwave.
emeff means you make a ring so the hole is in the middle because food in the middle wouldn't be moving much and you risk some of it staying in a part of the microwave where the waves interfere destructively. With the ring method you guarantee that all the food is moving through the hotspots. It probably doesnt matter as much with modern microwaves though.
edit: You're right that it's a different reason from why bagels are a ring though
Because without a hole, the center would take 2 or 3 times as long to cook. Not only would it take that much longer to be ready to eat, but the outside would be over done by the time the middle was cooked enough.
Eh, fried stuff would work better with it. Baked stuff like bagels are better with spreads. Donut holes work because they basically already have a spread on them-- the glaze.

Nah, different texture. Also doughnuts are usually fried, while cake is baked. The closest thing I can think of to doughnut bread would be fried dough, though that's still not the same imo.
Well, while donuts and bagels have the same basic shape, they're actually made differently.
Donuts are cut out of a sheet of dough with what is basically a cookie cutter. So you get a ring (the donut) and a little circle (the hole). Bagels are made by taking a cylinder of dough and twisting it into a ring. No leftover circles.
Now the little circle is usually rolled back in with the other scraps to make more donuts, but you can see how it would also be just as easy to fry them up.

This is speculation since I am not familiar with 9gag specifically but in general how this sort of thing works is that the web site can hide behind something called the Safe Harbor Provision in the DMCA law.
In a nutshell, if you rely on user-supplied content you can't be held liable for infringement because you're not specifically engaging in it, your users are. To qualify for this protection you do have to have some sort of infringement notification/takedown process implemented.

I always wondered why it's even legal for sites to do this. They're taking someone else's content and redistributing while adding a claim that it's theirs. That's just... blatant copyright abuse and theft. How have they not been sued yet?
Edit: The big issue isn't them redistributing it, but slapping their own watermark on it implying it is their creation.
Because whoever uploaded it claimed they had the rights to do so (spoiler: they don't), and are granting that site the ability to redistribute it.

It's not the redistribution that's at issue, it's the slapping on the watermark. They can't seriously claim they honestly believe everything uploaded to them is being done so with the understand they get to claim credit for it.
It's probably in the TOS when you upload. You are agreeing that you have full rights to upload and grant them the right to do whatever. It's a CYOA thing. Not their fault if someone else abuses it, they said they were the owners.
They would argue their license with their users allows them to watermark all user-submitted content. Because this is done to all uploads indiscriminately, as long as they respond to DMCA take-down notices they are protected under the safe harbor provision of the DMCA.

So when the chubby bubbles girl first made her appearance on 4chan one evening, someone posted the png which spawned a glorious thread of content. I took the template and made this variant. Now, I never cared about "protecting" the content I made because I wouldn't think I had any right to do so anyway (the girl is from some stock photography thing I believe, the humerus was extracted from the photo of a humerus that I found on wikipedia, and I wasn't the first person to come up with the pun). Many moons later, I did find it interesting to see it posted on websites with various watermarks (also the person that changed the text to "I FOUND THIS HUMERUS" which I specifically didn't do because it didn't fit into the space as nicely) from many different people, some of which were in some way taking credit for something I created. Honestly, I was just kind of tickled that searching for that phrase brought up something I made as the first results in a Google search. My point being, if it was something I could protect as my own content, I honestly feel like it would be way too much hassle to do it the right way and it's just not worth it for a silly little image that was made in 20 minutes (I was not good with GIMP and spent a lot of time extracting that humerus from the blue background the hard way). I mean, it's not illegal if the content isn't protected?

I download 1 Kanye album and I have to pay the net worth of the Panama Canal in fines. However, i create a website that mirrors the top posts from reddit everyday and I am lauded as a savior of the uniformed masses. How is this legal?
It's not, but what's the little guy supposed to do? That's what all the youtube drama has been about lately. After weeks of trying to get something you made taken down, the person who stole it will have already made the money and no one will notice it gone by the time it is. No restitution either, just a big head ache.
Really though, I cant think of a single reason bagels need holes. Theyd be much better without them in fact. Much larger surface for filling and no hole for leakage.
I once was reverse image searching a comic where the watermark was cropped off which I thought was super inconsiderate, and I came by one of those fake watermarks on the comic before I could find the real one. This is humanity at rock bottom!
Reddit isn't a much better community either though. At least 9gag has the excuse of being mostly middle school students, reddit is mostly grown ass men.

It's a picture from the 2013 divisional game between the Ravens and the Broncos. It was especially cold so Peyton had this mask on while he was warming up. Someone shared it on the subreddit, people thought it was funny, and it caught on. Basically just a rick roll but the picture was pretty funny by itself.

Thanks. I sent them an email about it, and they took down the stolen book. But they didn't ban the "author" from the site. He still has another book for sale, although fortunately not one of mine. So Amazon has done nothing to stop him from stealing from other authors.

As a Baker, I think it's so the texture is right.
Without the hole, it would be more like a roll. It would get too fluffy in the middle as it proofs. By being wheel shaped, it ensures the texture is consistently chewy throughout the bagel.

Yep, so are pretzels. The boiling process is what gives it the smooth / waxy crust. You only boil it for a short amount of time, then they get put in an oven to bake the inside.

Pretzles aren't boiled (at least the original German thing), but put in lye, then baked. (NaOH, don't toy around with that stuff and no, baking soda is not nearly strong enough, even if you boil it to turn into washing soda, I tried).
The reason behind that is that the maillard reaction likes base environments, as such you get more taste goodness than you could ever get by mere heat alone.
Both procedures cause the crust to be mostly non-permeable for water, which keeps moisture inside and dryness outside, resulting in a very thin, flexible, crust.

No, Brezel (BY/AT: Brezn or Breze, CH: Bretzel) is Pretzel and refers to the form. Lye pretzel is usually over-specific as that's the default, and implied.

Actually microwaves have hot/cool zones, which vary based on their model (some better than others), due to the way microwaves are reflecting around.
Since microwaves cook by interacting with and subsequently heating water molecules, which are all up in your food already, it doesn't matter what shape your food is in, just where it is in the microwave.

emeff means you make a ring so the hole is in the middle because food in the middle wouldn't be moving much and you risk some of it staying in a part of the microwave where the waves interfere destructively. With the ring method you guarantee that all the food is moving through the hotspots. It probably doesnt matter as much with modern microwaves though.

Well, while donuts and bagels have the same basic shape, they're actually made differently.
Donuts are cut out of a sheet of dough with what is basically a cookie cutter. So you get a ring (the donut) and a little circle (the hole). Bagels are made by taking a cylinder of dough and twisting it into a ring. No leftover circles.
Now the little circle is usually rolled back in with the other scraps to make more donuts, but you can see how it would also be just as easy to fry them up.

This is speculation since I am not familiar with 9gag specifically but in general how this sort of thing works is that the web site can hide behind something called the Safe Harbor Provision in the DMCA law.
In a nutshell, if you rely on user-supplied content you can't be held liable for infringement because you're not specifically engaging in it, your users are. To qualify for this protection you do have to have some sort of infringement notification/takedown process implemented.

I always wondered why it's even legal for sites to do this. They're taking someone else's content and redistributing while adding a claim that it's theirs. That's just... blatant copyright abuse and theft. How have they not been sued yet?
Edit: The big issue isn't them redistributing it, but slapping their own watermark on it implying it is their creation.

It's probably in the TOS when you upload. You are agreeing that you have full rights to upload and grant them the right to do whatever. It's a CYOA thing. Not their fault if someone else abuses it, they said they were the owners.

They would argue their license with their users allows them to watermark all user-submitted content. Because this is done to all uploads indiscriminately, as long as they respond to DMCA take-down notices they are protected under the safe harbor provision of the DMCA.

Not really at that level. 9gag had/has employees or a bot who methodically scans reddit for succesful posts and copies it to their site with the same title and their watermark slapped on. On top of all that they added artifical "likes" so that comment would bypass the shitty "new" tab on 9gag and send the stolen page straight to trending and then the hot page.

So when the chubby bubbles girl first made her appearance on 4chan one evening, someone posted the png which spawned a glorious thread of content. I took the template and made this variant. Now, I never cared about "protecting" the content I made because I wouldn't think I had any right to do so anyway (the girl is from some stock photography thing I believe, the humerus was extracted from the photo of a humerus that I found on wikipedia, and I wasn't the first person to come up with the pun). Many moons later, I did find it interesting to see it posted on websites with various watermarks (also the person that changed the text to "I FOUND THIS HUMERUS" which I specifically didn't do because it didn't fit into the space as nicely) from many different people, some of which were in some way taking credit for something I created. Honestly, I was just kind of tickled that searching for that phrase brought up something I made as the first results in a Google search. My point being, if it was something I could protect as my own content, I honestly feel like it would be way too much hassle to do it the right way and it's just not worth it for a silly little image that was made in 20 minutes (I was not good with GIMP and spent a lot of time extracting that humerus from the blue background the hard way). I mean, it's not illegal if the content isn't protected?
