That was a really good comparison. But for me at least, wrestling seemed super fake and acting is pretty bad. At least a lot of TV shows that are trying to put off an atmosphere where it's real have props, and places and people that are relatable. And the story lines usually aren't focused around a fake sport. It's the fake sport thing that really gets to me, like the competion isn't really a competion.

I don't watch wrestling, but my impression from this and TvTropes is that wrestling is pretty much the west's equivalent of shonen anime. Complete with melodramatic pre-, mid- and post-battle speeches, recurring characters showing up unexpectedly, and named signature moves.
Which frankly sounds kind of awesome. I should see if there's stuff on Netflix or something that I can binge...
Check out NXT. Its a self contained 1 hour show that you can find on Hulu and such that will serve as a really nice introduction to the world. Its WWE's "developmental", but most of the people there have been in the business for years.
The part where he posted a video that praises wrestling in reply to a post that criticizes it. When Humans agree with a sentiment another human has expressed, they don't typically follow that sentiment up with a contradictory sentiment.
In my experience, people who say 'wrestling isn't real' aren't referring to the athletics or the stunts, those are blatantly real. What they are referring to is the illusion of sportsmanship and competition. Also, that guy saying there are 'interesting, compelling and diverse stories' is rubbish.
[deleted] ยท 73 points ยท Posted at 12:05:39 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*
I think they are referring to the storytelling part of it (the "soap opera" part of it, if you want).
Exactly, I have the utmost respect for professional wrestlers. I used to watch it all the time when I was in my early teens. At the end of the day, though, it's just a staged show masquerading as a reality show and I got too frustrated watching it.
It's exactly a macho version of a play. It's performance art - combat stunts mixed with acting. Is it good acting? No. It's just entertaining. And if you just go along with it, you get to enjoy how fucking ridiculous it is and get caught up in the excitement.
It's actually likely to be closer to what original theatre was like back in the days of ancient Greece. The highly symbolic, manichean struggles between "good" and "evil", the emphasis on battle prowess, the unabashed machismo, those are all elements that appeared in classic Greek drama.
IIRC French literary theorist and philosopher Roland Barthes did a very interesting analysis of Pro Wrestling (known as "catch" in French). I'll try to remember how it was called, it's in my notes somewhere.
raevpet ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:15:06 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
A lot of driver drama, all the safety regulations and engine restrictions have all the cars going the same speed so there is no real "chase" anymore.
My wife fills me in on it, cause her family is into it, and I just think, this sounds a lot like wrestling. It takes skill to drive the cars sure, but the rivalries, the driver drama, and who wins, etc, is almost like a written soap opera. Some drivers are even what one would consider a "heel". I wouldn't say its completely staged, obviously wrecks are no joke, but a lot of the things that happen are a bit too convenient and keep a narrative going.
The difference there is that they're traveling at close to 200mph on some tracks. If you put my life at risk by wrecking me into a wall so you can move up a spot, I'm going to have some real animosity toward you, whether it's just "good hard racing" or not.
bmeckel ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:37:10 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Isn't NASCAR insanely tough given that you're all driving the same car around a decently simple loop, meaning the only advantage is through pure skill?
I don't think he's saying it's fake and easy but more so that there's drama amongst the athletes making it a sports soap opera. I don't follow enough to know if that's true but it has more rivalries than most sports
bmeckel ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:45:07 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I guess rivalries are played up (I assume, I don't watch it to be fair,) but the competition itself is still very much there, in that it doesn't seem to be as controlled an outcome as wrestling (again, this is from what little knowledge I have of NASCAR, it's just always seemed impressive to me in theory, but boring as hell to watch.)
So is jumping from the top rope and coming down flat on a guy so as to not break his bones and yours. It doesn't mean the whole thing isn't somewhat setup.
It's like other shows, and unlike sports and other authentic competition.
In other words, yes, it's a lot like The Biggest Loser and not a lot like a UFC fight, despite looking a lot more like the latter. (And even then, The Biggest Loser is probably a real competition to some degree, even if the dialogue is likely largely staged/scripted.)
Krail ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 16:00:21 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
They don't even try to hide it anymore. They openly admit that it's a staged show, and the wrestlers even do out of character interviews nowadays.
i can see that argument, but it is at least athletic, which is more than can be said of some other sports like golf, bowling, or nascar. and i'm not dissing any of those. those are all, in my opinion, deserving of the title sports. i just think sports entertainment is a fine term. it is athletically based entertainment.
In my experience people actually think all the stunts are super safe, and no one ever gets evenslightly hurt. They think everything is fake. You tell them about people like Mick Foley and they'll tell you that you're full of shit.
People really don't understand how dangerous the things those guys do really are.
Anyone who has never experienced some sort of athletic moemtn like that will have a hard time relating.
[deleted] ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 14:56:13 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
There are interesting stories though, people like to put their noses up at wrestling but are fine watching big Hollywood blockbusters which have the same amount of substance, not everything has to be deep high brow entertainment
Exactly. How many millions of dollars were spent seeing fast and furious 7 this weekend? It's equally brainless entertainment, and the stunts are done with doubles, wires, and CGI.
In my experience, people who say 'wrestling isn't real' aren't referring to the athletics or the stunts, those are blatantly real. What they are referring to is the illusion of sportsmanship and competition.
In my experience you're quite wrong and they mean both. Regardless, wrestling hasn't pretended to be a legitimate sporting competition since the 70's at the latest. We are aware
Also, that guy saying there are 'interesting, compelling and diverse stories' is rubbish.
So you've seen every single wrestling storyline huh? There are plenty of compelling wrestling stories. They are frequently also insane and silly but that doesn't mean there aren't enjoyable.
For real, people keep getting all defensive when this is brought up. I don't think anyone who is smart enough to realize that pro wrestling isn't real can't tell that the athletic element are not faked. The personnalities, stories and drama are all faked, the stunt are choreographed and loosely follow a script and the outcome of the matches are fixed.
[deleted] ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 14:53:31 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
The point is that people shouldn't even be using the argument of it not being real because it's not supposed to be. It'd be like pointing out Santa or the new Avengers movie isn't real, it's just pointing out the obvious.
[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 15:43:02 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

DeckerR ยท -27 points ยท Posted at 13:07:54 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Honestly I stopped watching that halfway through.
People who say wrestling isn't real are saying that it's scripted, badly written, soap opera style drama. That's what is not real. The stunts are just what they are. Stunts.
Two people are not fighting. They aren't wrestling. So it's not real.
People who say wrestling isn't real are saying that it's scripted, badly written, soap opera style drama.
I don't think I've ever heard the argument articulated in that way. It's almost always presented as "They rig the fights! They aren't even hitting each other! Look how bouncy the ring is!" like they've just uncovered some hitherto unknown truth about the world.
I'm not a wresting fan, but I can understand why people like it.
Poorly written soap opera style drama? Sure, just like everything else on TV pretty much.
Just stunts? What these guys perform is incredibly dangerous and physically demanding. It's essentially full contact ballet. And they do it every day for months on end.
Trash? I think you're confusing your opinion of the show with your opinion of the stereotypical wrestling fan. Either way, you're being needlessly judgmental. People are going to like what they like. Get over it.
I don't know that I've ever seen someone zoom themself, but you got damn close there.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:48:25 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
What you're describing are reasons some people may not like it, not the argument of it not being real when it's clearly not even supposed to be or trying to be real
My buddy and I every year watch WrestleMania and either smoke or drink to it. If you just go along with the ride it's absolutely hilarious and I would recommend it to anyone.
1) Make bets! Who's going to get pinned first, who's going to win, who's going to be "knocked out" first. It gets exciting because you really don't know.
2) Watch the Diva Match. Not just because yeah they are pretty hot, but because holy shit they are incredibly athletic and do some really impressive acrobatics that the men just can't do
3) Watch out for real injuries, because there are going to be a lot These guys get beat the hell up
That's my opinion. I don't see the appeal, but it's pretty clear most people watching it aren't deluding themselves into thinking it's any more than fictional entertainment and just have fun watching the narratives and impressive stunts, and I don't see anything wrong with that if they're having fun.
slaorta ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:22:44 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Wrestlemania was really good this year. Really, really good.
My only complaint was The Rock's monologue with Triple H and his wife. Something about who owns what and who. His delivery was so weird with awkward pauses. I think he was listening to the crowd chant but we kept yelling at the screen, "Dude! Either say something, smack Triple H or Rock Bottom his wife! Something!!"
Edit: Oh but he did tell Triple H to play jump rope with Stephanie's fallopian tubes which was hilarious
I'm sure I read it on reddit somewhere, but I've always appreciated the statement, "Actual wrestling is called 'Amateur Wrestling' while fake choreographed wrestling 'Professional Wrestling'."
leex0 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:24:34 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Probably because the 'real' wrestlers don't get paid, and the 'fake' ones do.
[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:11:40 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I've always seen pro wrestling as two men walking slowly and confidently toward eachother, doing some acrobatics, one gets "hurt" and the other slowly walks around him, looks at the crowd, looks at a sign or something, then caresses the downed man's head to slowly raise him up, look him in the eyes as if to kiss him, and then "punch" him in the face.
I'm not sure if it bothers others - but the really long pictures are quite hard to read on RES, so I usually skip them. OP can I suggest breaking it into several pictures we can just scroll left and right through when on RES but can scroll down on imgur?
You can. But OP's comments are so long it's a hassle.
I'm not actually complaining here - like, I'm not whining that it's not accessible to me. I just thought I'd let OP know in case they wanted to try changing it.

It's exactly a macho version of a play. It's performance art - combat stunts mixed with acting. Is it good acting? No. It's just entertaining. And if you just go along with it, you get to enjoy how fucking ridiculous it is and get caught up in the excitement.
archiesteel ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 17:13:02 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
It's actually likely to be closer to what original theatre was like back in the days of ancient Greece. The highly symbolic, manichean struggles between "good" and "evil", the emphasis on battle prowess, the unabashed machismo, those are all elements that appeared in classic Greek drama.
IIRC French literary theorist and philosopher Roland Barthes did a very interesting analysis of Pro Wrestling (known as "catch" in French). I'll try to remember how it was called, it's in my notes somewhere.

KaySquay ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:40:55 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

From a sports point of view it most certainly is.
revglenn ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:05:09 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
that's why wwe refers to itself as "sports entertainment". its entertainment based on the idea of a sport. it lays no claim to being actual sports.
mrpopenfresh ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 21:20:17 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
They really should drop the word "sport" altogether.
revglenn ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:34:47 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
i can see that argument, but it is at least athletic, which is more than can be said of some other sports like golf, bowling, or nascar. and i'm not dissing any of those. those are all, in my opinion, deserving of the title sports. i just think sports entertainment is a fine term. it is athletically based entertainment.
mrpopenfresh ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:39:05 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Yes I agree, pro wrestling stunts are athletic, but let's not conflate athleticism with sport and vice versa.
xilpaxim ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 14:34:56 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

hamishwilson ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 14:51:03 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

MorphyvsFischer ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:26:01 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
In my experience you're quite wrong and they mean both. Regardless, wrestling hasn't pretended to be a legitimate sporting competition since the 70's at the latest. We are aware
So you've seen every single wrestling storyline huh? There are plenty of compelling wrestling stories. They are frequently also insane and silly but that doesn't mean there aren't enjoyable.
mrpopenfresh ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:39:50 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

People who say wrestling isn't real are saying that it's scripted, badly written, soap opera style drama. That's what is not real. The stunts are just what they are. Stunts.
Two people are not fighting. They aren't wrestling. So it's not real.

Some ways to make it more entertaining.

Edit: Oh but he did tell Triple H to play jump rope with Stephanie's fallopian tubes which was hilarious

As someone who is currently very closely studying WWE for work, this seems like a pretty solid assessment to me.
jman2476 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:39:19 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Why are you studying the WWE?

Big test in the morning.

I'm a video game animator. I'll let you connect the dots.

You should sneak in a reference to the Hitler Hammer if you get a chance!
nathanage ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:51:24 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I'm sure I read it on reddit somewhere, but I've always appreciated the statement, "Actual wrestling is called 'Amateur Wrestling' while fake choreographed wrestling 'Professional Wrestling'."
leex0 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:24:34 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Probably because the 'real' wrestlers don't get paid, and the 'fake' ones do.

It's sports entertainment dammit!
It's a slow moving rollercoaster.
Tommy_Taylor ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:37:48 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
It's like that, but 3 hours long every Monday. And 2 hours long every Friday. And 3-4 hours long every fourth Sunday.

Goodie Two Shoes can be downloaded here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/13675
It's children's story of a poor child who grows up to teach other poor children to read.

I'm not sure if it bothers others - but the really long pictures are quite hard to read on RES, so I usually skip them. OP can I suggest breaking it into several pictures we can just scroll left and right through when on RES but can scroll down on imgur?
Rhincodon-typus ยท 36 points ยท Posted at 09:25:58 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I'm pretty sure you can drag the picture to resize it with RES.
TheRedJester ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 09:54:54 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
You can also just click on the link so it opens in a new tab.
kochipoik ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 09:56:57 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
You can. But OP's comments are so long it's a hassle.
I'm not actually complaining here - like, I'm not whining that it's not accessible to me. I just thought I'd let OP know in case they wanted to try changing it.
Slyer ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 10:26:10 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
OP can we condense the comic down into a meme. Preferably scumbag stacey.
[deleted] ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 13:00:45 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
He didn't suggest this at all, don't be a dick. He has a fair point and a good suggestion.

It's a cruel world. I upvoted you.

So he should cater to a certain group of people for no real reason?
Jinxplay ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 09:27:16 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Well, s/he stated a reason and make a suggestion. OP can then decide what to do.
I'm fine with this on my tablet (portrait), but I can imagine it being different for those on PC.
kochipoik ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 09:20:28 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Hey, I'm just letting him know that it may affect his readership. Doesn't matter to me.

I'd say most desktop Reddit users use RES.

Sample size matters.
andrewcooke ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:48:17 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
it just struck me that you could consider the (lack of) the little cross (that marks scores on "controversial" comments) as a rough indicator of (statistical) significance.
Sean1708 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 11:41:04 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
It's not the sample size that matters but how you misrepresent the data.

i wouldn't bad-mouth wrestling. the fans are as rabid and prevalent as mlp fans on reddit.

We usually just argue with each other most of the time.
RestoreFear ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:40:09 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
In my experience wrestling fans on Reddit tend to be very defensive about it. It's kind of strange.
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:27:40 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Well yeah, their intelligence is constantly being questioned. "You know that wrestling isn't real, right?"
I'm gonna go with yes.

Crooty ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:05:02 on April 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
It's because we're tried of explaining ourselves and hearing everyone tell us "you know it's fake right?"
So most of us can be a bit touchy about that stuff
