At first the scorpion was frantic and seemed scared, but eventually he learned to master the balloons. He got ballsy, and turned into a pissed off flying scorpion, stinging a few people.
Yep, that's called an ovipositor. It's for stabbing things and squirting eggs into the thing it stabs. Like your eyeballs. Just kidding, they generally lay eggs in rotting logs and stuff. Generally.
Edit: I was wrong, that's penis. Other insects have females with really big ovipositors that look like stingers, though.

Well if it makes you feel better, some insects have venomous ovipositors. That's what wasp and bee stingers are, adapted ovipositors. But don't worry, because most insects that have developed venomous ovipositors are an either/or deal. They either lay eggs with it (like a queen bee) or sting with it (like a worker bee), but can't do both.
Except for a few like the tarantula hawk and other solitary wasps. They sting with a horrifically painful venom and then lay eggs through their stinger.

I was reading this and I felt something crawl on my foot. I freaked the fuck out and spilled my Dr. Pepper all over myself. It turned out to be a hair.
Queen bees can sting, too! Honeybee worker's have barbed stingers so they get stuck in mammal skin, but queen stingers are smooth, so they don't get stuck. Queen stingers are mostly used in fights with other young queens, so after queens mature/start laying eggs, their venom gets weaker. Also, worker honeybee venom is formulated to cause damage to mammal tissue, that's why honeybee stings can hurt more/swell more than wasp stings (which are for stabbing other insects).

I like your usual style a lot better... This one lacked the usual heart and uniqueness of your normal comics because it look so crisp, so tidy; it looked like any other online comic
It looks really fucking good, man. I mean real good. I know what it lacks in fluidity, it makes up for in polish. For cheap tablets, look into some of the monoprice tablets. http://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id=108&cp_id=10841&cs_id=1084101 They have extremely decently priced ok tablets.
It's like the new one was drawn at a much higher resolution, with a higher quality tablet, using quicker, more confident lines. The composition is well thought out. The backgrounds aren't unfinished.
I'm telling you the artist stepped their game up like a LOT for this comic.
[edit] I just realized, the new one is all vector graphics. It's the eyes. The eyes are perfect ovals with even line weights. That's why this one looks so crisp.

ooh I see what you mean now. I thought you meant in just the current comic which is entirely vectors.
Edit: The previous art style takes way longer if that adds any merit. That's also my opinion as a vector artist.
I mean... there's just no earthly way that vectors take less time than brushes. Especially not for complex characters like this. I can sketch out a nose, a head, and some hair in way less time than someone else can make the vectors for it. It just takes more time. I love making vectors but they're a medium for tedium.

Hmm I guess that's a matter of opinion. I really consider vectors much easier and quicker to work with for sure. I'm all about the shape builder tool and various transforms in Illustrator. Makes everything take much less time without the need to draw what so ever, unless you want to sketch a mock up.
Edit: not to mention you can recycle vectors in other frames much easier and cleaner.
Like i said, love me some vectors, but it's a slower process. For instance if we sat next to each other, and you vector traced, and I brush traced one of shen's comics, I am one hundred percent certain I would be done faster. Not because I'm better, how could I know that? But because vectors simply take more time. And I have my ACEs, I teach illustrator, I'm no slouch.
I should also mention, I'm talking clean vectors. This comic has solid shapes, well formed curves, and properly trained corners. None of that blob brush bullshit.

No I gotcha! I don't play with that blob BS unless I'm applying filters on it. I just find shape tracing and using the shape maker tool and then simplifying paths to be very efficient for me. Definitely not talking about using the pen tool either, that takes forever.

So I found your blog (sorry to be a creeper). I really love your art style! I can definitely see how we would disagree on the previous topic. What drawing programs do you use? I don't really do a whole lot of art these days, just boring work designs and some goofy greeting cards, but I'd like to start playing around with some drawing studios other than Illustrator.
Shens got talent brah. His delivery/writing and his art just seem to get better and better as time goes on.
I tend to think that a lot of webcomics these days are pretty flat, but owlturd has been consistently entertaining. Always makes me smile when a new comic pops up in my frontpage.
Actually, it reminds me of a 1970's Heavy Metal Comic story, in which two people in some sort of bug apocalypse are walking around in robot suits that look a LOT like that last panel of this comic.
The two decide to get it on. In order to scrog, a mechanical tentacle protrudes from the male's suit and plugs into the females suit, both parts in the vicinity of their privates. This makes for some hot and strange psuedo-bangin. They decide to ditch the suits and go for some old school flesh on flesh fucking, and then the locusts move in, basically eating them alive while they hump.
butterflies are just daytime moths. Once my family wanted me to go into one of those butterfly garden exhibit things with them. I was way too terrified to even stand near the door.
Spiders and centipedes are NOT less creepy with wings. In fact they are so horrific that they are destroying the world and putting humankind into perpetual war which we are losing.
Or rather, going by the flamethrower at their feet, humans have destroyed the wolrd trying to kill the insects. Its the 'welp, there's a spider, gotta burn the house down' joke.
Fun fact! Most people know that spiders aren't insects, but it may interest some to know that neither are scorpions. They belong to the class arachnida along with spiders.
Edit: Fixed my wording as it seemed condescending and that was definitely not my intention. I just like sharing info that I find interesting!
Judging by the events of the last couple days, probably want to be careful about correcting someone in regards to what class a type of animal falls into.

It's more of your drive to make people know the correct thing. You can have a fascination of the natural world and not give a shit if people are using the correct terms.
Here's a tip: If you ever are going to start a comment with "Actually," or "I hate to be that guy, but" then you can just go ahead and kill yourself. You're the worst kind of internet poster.
Here's another tip--don't tell people you don't know to kill themselves just for informing us about an important distinction between spiders and their six-legged relatives. It's incredibly mean and entirely unnecessary.
Actually, I think the beautiful thing about this comic is that it doesn't directly imply that flying spiders and centipedes have caused the world to go to shit; but, perhaps the presence of them existing has tipped the scales and created an apocalypse.
No, it's just the art style the artist chose to use.
Their noses may be a little unusually looking, but I don't see any other identifying traits that I would say qualifies as them being furries (ears, tails, claws, wings, etc).

I just think arguing that "a string of letters which is instantly recognizable as conveying a certain meaning" is not a "word" is just about the silliest position one can hold.
"Bromance" is a dumb word, and I don't think it is used enough to recognize it. "Humankind" is simply an attempt to be more inclusive. If it's good enough for the OED, it's good enough for me. I made one of these comments a fair while ago.
I think that whatever he was getting wrong with the noses, he's sorted out - they don't bother me any more. I've quite liked them in the past few comics.
The comic is funny and the art is great but the noses are stupid and ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason to give the characters purple LEGO noses other than that's how they do it on Tumblr.

I agree, they should just have wings. Conversely, it's incredible the processes of transformation to get 'em wings. However, most beetles, cockroaches included, can fly!!. I'd rather they be on the ground, so I can stomp efficiently. Flying irritants result in hilarious and frantic hand waving, running, etc.

Sometimes I'm short on ideas, and being like most people, I go to the ideas that most people go to. It's like the new one was drawn at a much higher resolution, with a higher quality tablet, using quicker, more confident lines. The composition is well thought out. The backgrounds aren't unfinished.
I'm telling you the artist stepped their game up like a LOT for this comic.
[edit] I just realized, the new one is all vector graphics. It's the eyes. The eyes are perfect ovals with even line weights. That's why this one looks so crisp.

I mean... there's just no earthly way that vectors take less time than brushes. Especially not for complex characters like this. I can sketch out a nose, a head, and some hair in way less time than someone else can make the vectors for it. It just takes more time. I love making vectors but they're a medium for tedium.

Hmm I guess that's a matter of opinion. I really consider vectors much easier and quicker to work with for sure. I'm all about the shape builder tool and various transforms in Illustrator. Makes everything take much less time without the need to draw what so ever, unless you want to sketch a mock up.
Edit: not to mention you can recycle vectors in other frames much easier and cleaner.

Like i said, love me some vectors, but it's a slower process. For instance if we sat next to each other, and you vector traced, and I brush traced one of shen's comics, I am one hundred percent certain I would be done faster. Not because I'm better, how could I know that? But because vectors simply take more time. And I have my ACEs, I teach illustrator, I'm no slouch.
I should also mention, I'm talking clean vectors. This comic has solid shapes, well formed curves, and properly trained corners. None of that blob brush bullshit.

No I gotcha! I don't play with that blob BS unless I'm applying filters on it. I just find shape tracing and using the shape maker tool and then simplifying paths to be very efficient for me. Definitely not talking about using the pen tool either, that takes forever.

Actually, it reminds me of a 1970's Heavy Metal Comic story, in which two people in some sort of bug apocalypse are walking around in robot suits that look a LOT like that last panel of this comic.
The two decide to get it on. In order to scrog, a mechanical tentacle protrudes from the male's suit and plugs into the females suit, both parts in the vicinity of their privates. This makes for some hot and strange psuedo-bangin. They decide to ditch the suits and go for some old school flesh on flesh fucking, and then the locusts move in, basically eating them alive while they hump.

"Bromance" is a dumb word, and I don't think it is used enough to recognize it. "Humankind" is simply an attempt to be more inclusive. If it's good enough for the OED, it's good enough for me. The comic is funny and the art is great but the noses are stupid and ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason to give the characters purple LEGO noses other than that's how they do it on Tumblr.

I agree, they should just have wings. Conversely, it's incredible the processes of transformation to get 'em wings. However, most beetles, cockroaches included, can fly!!. I'd rather they be on the ground, so I can stomp efficiently. Flying irritants result in hilarious and frantic hand waving, running, etc.

I see what you're saying, and it's a valid observation. Sometimes I'm short on ideas, and being like most people, I go to the ideas that most people go to. This comic was more of a tech demo while I try to figure out how to make these in Flash (tablet broke) -- now I have a good idea though, so keep an eye out for my next drawn comic, which I can probably get out on Saturday! :]
