Well Sherlock'd, but the mask itself tells a different story. First, it portrays one of thousands of variants of the "Epic Smiley" that only came into existence a decade ago. Second, and more importantly, it represents a character redesigned for the fourth generation of the show. That color scheme for the character didn't exist until the fourth generation's tv show premiered in late 2010. At oldest, this puts OP at 17.

It believe it was released in the 80s, redesigned in the 90s, was redesigned a second time in 2003-ish(?) and is now in it's 4th iteration as of 2010. There was only a 2 year gap between the newest generation and the previous one.

When you consider this, you have to take the person that was responsible for the reboot into consideration. Lauren Faust. Here is an entire article written by her, but here's the most important part to this discussion specifically:

If you've ever watched any of the old cartoons, they are actually well in accordance with Faust's vision and espouse similar messages. When she says all of that, she isn't denigrating G1, G2 or G3 (actually, G3 was pretty horrible IMHO.)

You're implying that the older series don't show the range of talents and interests a girl can have, but that simply isn't true - all of those themes are touched upon in G1 and G2. I recall the ponies being good at music, skating, sports, storytelling, mathematics... none of the female characters were "token girls." There was an episode about a boy trying to "save" the girls and he ended up learning his lesson. There was another episode about a female pony being laughed at by her male peers for joining the sports team, and she ended up winning the match. I grew up with MLP in the 80's and 90's and enjoyed it because it was more interesting than most other cartoons "for girls" at the time.

The new series definitely goes deeper than the older ones, and I would agree that it's quite a fresh break from the others - but just because they don't hold appeal for adult male viewers does not mean they don't have value and enjoyment for young girls. As far as TV series based on toy franchises go, it's decent.

If you like MLP, that's fine - the thing with target demographics is that you can enjoy something even if it's not originally aimed at you - but the show is intended for young girls (and young boys, I guess, since toys don't have a strict gender barrier.) Ask Hasbro.

I've certainly never cared enough about it to actually go and look up anything regarding older MLP cartoons, and I've never really held any sort of opinion on them. I am glad to now know somewhat about it through this. That does kind of help your point though; I've never looked into it, and simply assumed things due to trends in cartoons, and was wrong about it. Who knows how many others just assume these things and are wrong about them.

Of course the show was made for little girls; it literally would never have made it past a concept had that not been made clear. The main part of why I posted was because with the tone of the original post; I assumed it was referring to MLP as purely a typical girly girl for girls show, but I have clearly been mistaken. Like I said, I never really held any sort of opinion on the older cartoons, so I was going off pure speculation. Thank you for clearing up my misconceptions, I can see where you're coming from in thinking it's silly for some fans to feel that way; To be perfectly honest, I find it quite dumb too.

It's cool. I don't see a problem with bronies not being interested in the older cartoons because they do have less of a universal appeal than the new show. I just don't like this idea that bronies somehow have a better idea of what makes a show progressive and positive for girls.

If anything, I think today's girls' toys are more "pinkified" than the ones I grew up with. The 80's and 90's were quite a good time for girls' entertainment. My cousin has a three-day-old daughter and I had so much trouble finding anything that wasn't sickly pink or blue with trucks on it (not that there's anything wrong with either of those, but I didn't know the gender of the baby when buying the gift.)

So this is the first time I've been able to figure out what MLP stands for. Generally I try to avoid really thinking about abbreviations on here as they often make things worse. I've been seeing MLP for a couple weeks now and the best my brain could figure out quickly was Major League Player, at which point I cut it off. Major League Player never fit the context and now I know why.

I expect down votes but honestly My Little Pony never crossed my mind. This is why I try to stop my brain from figuring out these abbreviations.

She started off and on around 2 years old, just imitating the cats.. by daycare (around 4) she started actively cultivating a cat personality (which she carried on, for years - through every outlet). It became a problem when she would only communicate with the teachers by meowing and rubbing up against their legs. It was harmless and innocent, she was a bit of an odd duck in that she just didn't give a shit what any of the other kids thought - but she had lots of friends...

She's a very well-adjusted individual now, passionate about animals and pursuing vet studies while writing a book (writing was a hobby she cultivated while writing fantasy roleplay with others who had an active interest in cultivating these animal personalities as a kid).. The cat thing is something we all laugh about now, but I'm sure it cause my parents some exasperation.

So ~1998 there was a girl in the year above me at school that had an imaginary friend called "QX".

"QX" was a he and smaller than your thumb, he would talk to her and tell her answers to tests. She was quite smart and didn't have many friends other than QX.

Fifteen years go past and I'm just starting out a temping job with about 400 employees. My first day I sit down at my new desk and thirty minutes go by and I instantly see this girl again. I haven't seen her in so long, I can't remember her name but I still remember her because of imaginary friend.

Some things really do stick.

I never told anyone at work how I remembered her, and eventually I moved jobs. But I'll never forget her and QX.

Bronyism does for middleclass kids what gangs do for poor kids.

Think about it, why do poorer kids join gangs? Growing up under the struggle of poverty and usually a shitty family life leaves them seeking the brotherhood and social support gangs provide. If you picture your self as a kid in a crime ridden neighborhood with no future or support at home, joining a gang seems pretty appealing.

Now lets think about awkward middle class kids. They too are in a struggle, the struggle of surviving school when you're socially awkward and lonely/have few friends. But then MLP comes along and a kid who had no friends embraces it. Overnight he finds a community willing to look past what ever thing society shunned him for and now has tons of friends, and all he has to do is like a tv show.

This also applies to juggalos.

I'm not an "anti-brony". I can assure you I don't spend enough time thinking about you guys to earn that label.

The gang comparison was the easiest to make, and what I described is a well observed phenomenon.

I'm really not that critical of MLP, my comment isn't either. No matter how you feel you can't deny that a large part of the MLP fanbase are socially awkward kids who stick around for the fandom/fanbase. Hell in the Brony documentary I think a few of the kids outright said it.

And I'm well aware that a large part of the fandom is socially awkward, but so what? It's not a problem that they want to be in an environment where they won't get put down for something they can't control or haven't grown out of yet. Everyone wants an envorinment where they feel safe and secure enough to be themselves without repercussion.

And then the internet turns around and starts calling Bronies autists as an insult because of the large amount of people on the autism spectrum and/or with social anxiety.

That's just sickening, how these people can be that cruel for no fucking reason.

But oh, they like a show for little girls, some of the artists make porn of the characters. That's a justifiable reason to say bronies deserve to be bullied or killed. That's a justifiable reason make people feel ashamed for something that makes them happy.

About a year later, I went to a meet-up and everyone there was either a skinny acne-ridden teenager talking about memes, or a greasy middle-aged creep, and I was like "What the fuck am I doing here?" and stopped associating myself with those people. I did go to a few meet-ups before that, and everyone was chill, there were actually fun people to talk to, and MLP was treated as this low-key hobby rather than an obsession, so I guess the community changed, and my perception of the subject too.
