I imagine these are just random monster illustrations that he's attached the name to. If you were trying to draw something based on the name something like Cyndaquil or Meowth would be far less off the wall.
I think Cyndaquil was thrown off by poor spelling - instead of "cinder quill" to associate it with a fire-type little porcupine thing, we got Cyndi from Human Resources, standing atop a dozen spiky quill-like points.
And for Meowth he seems to have missed the "Meow" and focussed on giving it a drastically enlarged mouth (mowth).
I would have to agree. Most of the English names are either combinations of plays on English words. Snorelax is a combination of snore and relax but the guy draws a vacumecleaner with one eye for some reason.
MarsUlta ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 11:52:54 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I thought it was like a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, something that would reduce snoring. He got the words, but he took relax to mean reduce.
There was a comment which said snorlax resembled the word 'lorax' and maybe that's why the drawing is outlandish.

Maybe for one or two but honestly I don't think so. You can see the thought process behind all of them basically. I thought it actually seemed like what he said was completely accurate and he knows little about Pokรฉmon prior to coming into this thread. Even if he does actually know about it and just drew these based on name only it's quite well done.

Yeah it definitely was fun to see what the artist came up with just from a name. Personally though, I like it more when artists are given a name and a brief description so it's a little closer but still a new version of something we all know. I know there were posts in r/leagueoflegends back when I used to play where someone would describe different champions and his friend would draw them and they came out really cool.
I guess it's more of an alternate version but still recognizable versus just a randomly made up character with a recognizable name attached. To each his own though.
ryy0 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 11:32:54 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It might inform a method for expanding the roster of available Pokรฉmons: a group of people knowing nothing about pokรฉmon is given a list of names of existing species. They are asked to make illustrations for those names. Another group is then given the illustration (but not the original list) and told to give names to the creatures. Finally, some Pokรฉmon dev veterans are tasked to filter out the results and make adjustments, finally outputting the next generation of Pokรฉmons.
Of course, it's not like they're going to expand the roster beyond the original 151.
If you liked that , look up drawfee. They have a series where 3 people draw Pokemon from memory but one of them has knows nothing of Pokemon. Verry funny.
They put me in mind of a medieval monk or artist that has never actually seen an animal drawing or painting one, albeit with a more naturalistic "style" and training in our style of drawing.

I think maybe the artist picked a bit too many pokemon that don't really reveal much in their names. Like, Jinx and Vulpix look like just random creatures you might see on Aaaah! Real Monsters. I think it's hard to fault the artist though. What the hell am I supposed to draw when someone just says the word Jinx. It's like if someone came up to a Pokemon fan and say, HEY, DRAW ME A 'Pickmon' DIGIMON!'
He didn't pick which pokemon to draw though. And ya, a lot of their names don't reveal much about their appearance.
aizxy ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 13:47:01 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
People are critical because it's in best of. If they had stumbled on it organically they might just be like oh hey this is neat. When it's presented to you as being one of the best things on Reddit it raises your expectations so you're naturally going to be more critical when it doesn't meet those expectations.
What did you expect? I expected funny looking drawings.
[deleted] ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 13:50:10 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
This is pretty classic bestof. Post breaks 4k upvotes and then you go to the comments and everyone is like
"This is bestof?!!??!" 200 upvotes
"This was done before, only better" 150 upvotes
"DAE think this actually sucks?" 250 upvotes
I mean sometimes its kind of warranted I guess. Every once and awhile something real odd gets up on bestof, sure, but this guy wasn't even trying to draw the actual pokemon. He asks people to pick real or fake names and he will doodle something based on the name. They are great doodles, there are a lot of them, they are ridiculous. IDK what people expect.
No there is a big difference. OP actually tries to make something which in his imagination would fit the name of the Pokemon, not just some random doodle.

Gonna be bad times for me right now.
I didn't like it.
Every single creation was similar. WAY too similar. They didn't add anything to the designs, but just had a very same-y face on a body and added bits as extra.
None of the names meant anything to the drawings. They're completely interchangeable. Almost all of the drawings could be swapped for any of the others and everyone would still go "yeah looks about right".
Dragonite has dynamite in its butt. A few others have similar traits. They all look like they're background characters in some Nick feature from the 90s.
But overall, I didn't like the style and the sameness over every creation.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:51:40 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I thought it was an iron lung, which makes a snoring sound.
DaMadApe ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 11:22:30 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Something gave me the same impression as I saw them, but had to revisit them, as I thought that original designs would also incurr in the same issue. Colouring having a relevant impact is my best guess.
And not too much could be made with regards to the names. I mean, most of them don't sound like anything.
Dragonite is pretty clearly Dragon + dynamite. Teddiursa was a teddy bear-like creature. Weedle had needles. Mudkip looks like a mud creature.
The guy has a distinctive style, and you're allowed to dislike it. And some of them, particularly the less descriptive names, are somewhat interchangeable because it's entirely the artist's impression based solely on a name. But to say that say Dragonite and Teddiursa could be swapped and make sense is crazy.
And how are Snorlax and Mew the same creature? Or Clefable and Vulpix? They're all by the same artist and have a similar style, but they're still distinct. Would you also say that all the Futurama characters are the same because they all have the same lip style?
It's okay to dislike someone's art style, but give the guy some credit, they're not all the same thing and the names are not interchangeable.
Because they're all sort of amorphous looking with a few details here and there. I looked at the thread maybe 2min ago and if you tested me which is which I wouldn't even remember now.
Yes! They look like characters from rocko's modern life!
MonaganX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:55:59 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I think you're a bit off on the names and the drawings. Mew is like a mouse/shrew. Dragonite is dynamite/dragon. Lugia is a mixture between Luigi and...a giraffe, maybe? Alright, it gets a bit difficult to figure out afterwards. I'm pretty sure most of those "pokemon" have something to do with the name. The artist just didn't do a very good job making his reasoning for a creature's design apparent within the design itself.
What is it? People tend to take out their self loathing on others like you?
Snapdad ยท -20 points ยท Posted at 12:39:38 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I wonder if there is a bit of the Dunning-Kruger effect going on in this thread. There are a lot of people putting down the artist but I don't see one of these people putting up any of their own artwork as an example. Creating origional artwork based off of a single word name can't be easy.
I don't think that criticism works. Why do you think art critics or movie critics or game reviewers can still do their job? You don't have to create stuff to be able to criticise it.
BCSteve ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 12:45:42 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Roger Ebert has never made a movie, is his opinion as a film critic invalid?
Frank Bruni has never been a chef, does that mean his time as chief restaurant critic for the NYT was a farce?
John Updike was a writer, not a painter, should he not have been probably the most famous art critic?
You don't have to be able to do something yourself in order to criticize it.
The quality of the worth is great, by itself. I could easily see it in a professional production and wouldn't be surprised if they were a pro cartoonist.
There's a lot that just don't make much sense. Snorlax, for instance was even requested to be drawn eating hot pockets, so one would think that "snore," "lax," and "hot pockets" would convey an image of a lazy, sleepy, fat Pokemon. Instead, they drew a vacuum cleaner thing.
Same with vulpix, but to a slightly lesser extent. Vulpix = vulpes, as in fox. The "-ix" comes from six, as in its six tails. Figuring out the six would be incredibly insightful, but vulpix->vulpes isn't that much of a leap, particularly considering the amours of time that must have gone into each of the drawings.
He could have at least tried to draw something off of what the names sounded like. By the time I got to Weedle I started to wonder if he had drawn up a bunch of sketches beforehand, and added names as he went along.

Yeah, it's certainly a good idea for marketing yourself as an illustrator, but I don't find anything exceptional about this. I don't fault the person for doing whatever they can to get their name out there, but this didn't seem special. I also find it very surprising that a cartoonist knows nothing about one of the biggest animated shows of all time (even the basic concept that the names generally match the character model.)
But I'm not gonna assume this was disingenuous. It's just... meh.

It's hard to take some of them because of his own personal interpretation... which people are comparing to what they know about pokemon.
His style is comical. While his interpretation of some of them don't necessarily fit the name, it's still a good thread.
Serious question, how can you be an internet user and not know what a Snorlax looks like, especially with all the recent Pokรฉmon Go craze? Does he live under a rock?
I am an Internet user and don't care about pokemon. I know what Pikachu looks like and that there is a Pokemon that looks like a war-turtle and one that is sleepy and one that is called enton (at least over here). So it's possible.
I've never even heard of the word Snorlax before today, and I was still a kid when Pokemon was just coming out. It's actually more likely that the majority of people don't know what that is.
Snapdad ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:44:45 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Because I'm older and didn't grow up with pokemon. I know what pikachu looks like and that's about it. There are other things I don't care about Barney or power rangers or dragonball z(however I've seen the dragonball z abbreviated and that was hilarious). It's stuff that was happening when I was too old to care.
Meh you could ask me about most internet trends and I'd have no idea what you're talking about. I've never played Overreach of whatever that game is called, or the soccer car game, I don't know a thing about wow or league of legends other than the name. This guy is tops...in another /r/icandrawthat post, he took a lengthy description of my novel's main character (it's a serious book about soldiers in WWI) and returned pure gold. Nothing like what I had in mind, but I still get a grin when I think about it.
What was entirely bizarre was how right he got it even in caricature.
The story's main character, Felix, has some of my own features in his description, and putting this chap's cartoon next to my photo (which he'd not seen) was strikingly fitting.
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 11:01:24 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I imagine these are just random monster illustrations that he's attached the name to. If you were trying to draw something based on the name something like Cyndaquil or Meowth would be far less off the wall.
noggin-scratcher ยท 56 points ยท Posted at 10:56:14 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I think Cyndaquil was thrown off by poor spelling - instead of "cinder quill" to associate it with a fire-type little porcupine thing, we got Cyndi from Human Resources, standing atop a dozen spiky quill-like points.
And for Meowth he seems to have missed the "Meow" and focussed on giving it a drastically enlarged mouth (mowth).

formlessfish ยท 32 points ยท Posted at 11:00:19 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
He got the words, but he took relax to mean reduce.
itachifan035 ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 11:38:08 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

TudorrrrTudprrrr ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 13:27:51 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
"Vulpe" means Fox in romanian, so I was perplexed by his drawing of Vulpix. But then I remembered that not everyone speaks Latin based languages.
poly_atheist ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:19:53 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

People are critical because it's in best of. If they had stumbled on it organically they might just be like oh hey this is neat. When it's presented to you as being one of the best things on Reddit it raises your expectations so you're naturally going to be more critical when it doesn't meet those expectations.
poly_atheist ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:25:38 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

IDK what people expect.
ubern00by ยท 63 points ยท Posted at 10:45:11 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Gonna be bad times for me right now.
I didn't like it.
Every single creation was similar. WAY too similar. They didn't add anything to the designs, but just had a very same-y face on a body and added bits as extra.
None of the names meant anything to the drawings. They're completely interchangeable. Almost all of the drawings could be swapped for any of the others and everyone would still go "yeah looks about right".
Dragonite has dynamite in its butt. A few others have similar traits. They all look like they're background characters in some Nick feature from the 90s.
But overall, I didn't like the style and the sameness over every creation.

Something gave me the same impression as I saw them, but had to revisit them, as I thought that original designs would also incurr in the same issue. Colouring having a relevant impact is my best guess.
And not too much could be made with regards to the names. I mean, most of them don't sound like anything.
admirablefox ยท 233 points ยท Posted at 11:29:13 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

ZapActions-dower ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:06:09 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Figuring out the six would be incredibly insightful, but vulpix->vulpes isn't that much of a leap, particularly considering the amours of time that must have gone into each of the drawings.

snorlax sounds like lorax, and the drawing ended up looking like a twisted dr. seus character.
DavidLovato ยท 39 points ยท Posted at 10:05:46 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Immediately got the same impression. Who sees "Mew" and thinks "puddle with gigantic rat ears and Wario's nose"?
[deleted] ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 10:14:17 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah if I didn't know what Mew looks like, I probably would have drawn a cute little kitten or something similar
mckiddy10 ยท -12 points ยท Posted at 11:38:26 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Meh. Onomatopoeia.
Mew splew gew. Squashed creature would be my guess it's not too bad
HomelessHarry ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:44:34 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Rat also rhymes with mat but look nothing alike. Rhyming words doesn't make them similar
mckiddy10 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:49:59 on August 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Sorry I was using examples of words that fit the same theme as squashed.
Like spike and pike. Both sound very pointy and round sounding soft I wasn't just making words rhyme

It wasn't a puddle it reminded me of what happens if you stroke a hamsters back for ages

It's just... meh.
monsto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:52:11 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Back in the 90s, I knew a programmer that played DnD, but had never seen an episode of Star Trek Next Gen.
The unicorns are out there.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:36:14 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I believe it. It's just surprising.

I'm really surprised to see so many people say this, I saw the reasoning behind basically all of them I feel like and I thought it was clever and well done.
monsto ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:50:30 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's hard to take some of them because of his own personal interpretation... which people are comparing to what they know about pokemon.
His style is comical. While his interpretation of some of them don't necessarily fit the name, it's still a good thread.
AHarderStyle ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:25:56 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Reminds me of this YouTube channel I follow, Drawfee. I found them doing shitty Pokemon sketches and they're fun to watch and very good artists.

Serious question, how can you be an internet user and not know what a Snorlax looks like, especially with all the recent Pokรฉmon Go craze? Does he live under a rock?
waldgnome ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 11:38:36 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I am an Internet user and don't care about pokemon. I know what Pikachu looks like and that there is a Pokemon that looks like a war-turtle and one that is sleepy and one that is called enton (at least over here). So it's possible.
splitcroof92 ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 11:57:03 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Snorlax is actually the sleepy one you're describing
MrSnayta ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:24:28 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
which is funny because he literally described it with one word but everyone that knows pokemon knows that sleepy = snorlax first and foremost

It's stuff that was happening when I was too old to care.
robxburninator ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:39:45 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
same. I could tell you which one is pickachu but other than that I have no idea what any of them are.

robxburninator ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 14:57:29 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I have no idea what that is. I assume a lizard?

I have girls that are into watching and drawing it, so I know a couple of them. Other than that, I'm like you.
CSMastermind ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 12:29:05 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Meh you could ask me about most internet trends and I'd have no idea what you're talking about. I've never played Overreach of whatever that game is called, or the soccer car game, I don't know a thing about wow or league of legends other than the name. Everything I know about Legend of Zelda comes from Super Smash Bros. And plenty of other examples. I'm generally aware of their existence but I don't know anything about them.

It might not be an "internet trend" but it's a trend nonetheless and a lot of people older than about 28-30 can feasibly have no idea what one looks like.
Is absolutely spot on for me.

Because the artist doesn't know the style of pokemon at all. That is the whole point. The sketches are based off the artist's interpretations of the names alone.
Mogtaki ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 12:12:30 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I don't think it's to do with not knowing the style as it is drawing in their own style. Stylised illustrations of already existing properties are really fun to make.

Because people these days are inherently arrogant.
If you don't know what I know or like what I like, then I'll downvote you and unfriend you. Idiot.
[edit] also, reddit is generally thin skinned. After clicing "save" i thought "do I need to put /s at the end of my example so ppl don't think I'm serious?"
Sometimes I think the internet was just a bad idea.
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 11:33:52 on August 22, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Hmmm. I wonder if I can draw a bunch of random "things" and then say I'm trying to draw like MTG characters.

Also, what the heck were the thought processes behind these? I was expecting they were guessing from the Pokemon names but theyre just outright bizare.
