I believe the he was in it for the long run. I personally listened to every song on the list on Saturday. The FRIENDS theme was in there at least 4 times. I was confused, but since I didn't bother to read the comments in the 10/10 underrated post, I trusted his playlist.
I wish I could have said I saw this coming. At least I copied all the songs I wanted to my own playlist before this happened.
i guess what i did was essentially a round-about rickroll, but at least the dumb song i chose was less predictable. predictability is poison to comedy. theres nothing funny in telling someone a joke theyve already heard, which is what would have happened had i used "never gonna give you up" or "whats new pussycat"
then again, reddit is the mecca of repeated jokes, so i guess it would have been well received. gross, not worth it

Also, at the stage where there were just 7 copies of Friends (I didn't suspect anything although I thought it was a bit unusual) I cloned the playlist and got rid of them. So I have it intact on my computer, named "Hipster Reddit Stuff". Already copied a few into my main playlist.

I disagree, there are plenty of times where it's obvious a party had ulterior motives and I just can't be bothered to care what they are. I.e. Getting screwed by the the only car dealer in 300 miles when you're desperate for a car.
I don't remember the story all that well but the gist of it was that a lot of people in some subreddit all decided to pick a totally random youtube video by some unsuspecting youtuber and then everyone would go to that video and comment on it and stuff. Somehow /u/I_RAPE_CATS got to be the one to pick whose video was targeted used the opportunity to pick a video his friend had uploaded, so with all of the views his friend was able to monetize it and make money. This happened a few years ago I believe

It's brilliant. The original plan was likely "take shit video, make someone feel the video is good, rip that from under them". I know reddit thinks the group think is unbeatable but it shouldn't go in for shenanigans if it can't handle shenanigans happening to it.

Maybe a scam, but it was victimless. Redditors enjoyed doing their prank, YouTube made money off the ads, and sent some of it to the uploaded. Everyone won.
Nobody lost money, though. He took something deliberately pointless and gave it a point, albeit a selfish one. The only thing lost was the pointlessness.

I think he's talking about this a few years ago for the April Fools Video reddit does. The april fools joke was to pretend that a bland video was really interesting and like and comment about how great it was. The idea being that you tell people who weren't in on the joke about this really cool video and it's just some guy chopping onions or something but they would assume they were missing something.
The videos until then didn't have ads at all, and giving the uploader a surprise wasn't part of it in the slightest, it was done so we could play practical jokes on our friends who weren't in on it.
How much money can you make from views? Say if you got a million views how much you think that would rake in?

The amount youtube actually pays for videos is a secret, most likely because they, like everyone else, are probably willing to pay a bit more for premium talent and they don't want to make their rates public. Plus google's algorithms for calculating subscriber demographics and turning that into usable information to sell ads would be trade secrets.
However, I've read it's a bit more like $1000-$1500 per million views.
That's still pretty significant though. That means someone like say, Epic Rap Battles of History, makes $100k per video with additional revenue trickling in once videos are older, maybe a million in gross revenue per season? That would probably be commensurate with the budget they seem to have (employing 3-5 people in their production company, decent hardware but nothing super high end), still wanting to merchandise etc. If it were $8000 per million views they'd be rolling in the kind of cash that movie studios have. Of course, if you're someone like Jenna Marbles whose production costs are tiny, that's all profit.

That is high - it works out more like $1000-$2000 for a million hits. When it goes up to 50m you don't make 50 times that either. It all depends on who's watched it on what device as well. You tube works out peoples ad watching habits and if you're shutting ads down a lot they tend to go away a little more. Also if it's hosted else where as a featured video the ad's tend not to have pre-rolls so you can have 1m views and only pull in $800. If you have a video with 700k views you can monetise and pick the ad types people see. Otherwise Google is just taking that ad money anyway.

I'm not entirely sure how it works for sure as it's always changing - it seems that 6 months ago if it was watched on a mobile / tablet it had no ads - but that's not the case any more. But I doubt there's NOT ads on your videos. But yes - if you're logged in they'd probably forgo serving you an ad so you can see all the content. It's a bit annoying as it you add subtitles to something they clash with ads.
No, he really wouldn't. I have a video of the exact same length with 60k views and a whopping $3 of revenue. Long videos with a large target audience make the most money as well as those partnered with large MCN who can get great ad deals. They really never made much money off that video, and I can't believe you would think that.

It wasn't for underrated songs exactly it was for 10/10 songs that were unknown by most people. I listened to the top few songs and they were unremarkable, not 10/10 so I posted a great song that was genuinely popular but still unknown by a lot of people, including most of /r/music probably. I got downvoted for that.
The problem with threads like these are people just post tracks that they like without caring whether they'd appeal to most people.
i actually starred every song on the playlist to check out later. good thing i did too. the playlist is the same except for the order of the songs 50 songs in or so, give or take a song or two because a skipped over the plus button on spotify once or twice when i was mass adding/checking the songs. but all the songs are there that were on the playlist when it was gilded. I just reposted it and I suggest you star the songs as well and make your own playlist so I cant also troll you. but its not lost, at least not for me :)

Considering what people enjoy or don't enjoy is purely subjective I don't see how this is a non-meaningless statement. In other words, if I like something you don't like, it's not like one of us is right and the other wrong, we just like different things.
The problem I have with hipsters is they will begin not liking the same things they used to like just because others now like it. That exact same album or song they liked before they now don't like. Music (or TV or an app or a clothing style) has value only because their opinion is unusual.
It has nothing to do with the music (or whatever) and everything to do with them making themselves feel like a special flower or clever trendsetter.

Yes, exactly, different people like different things. I may like this different band and, as it gets more popular, they shift more and more towards a 'generic' sound. Someone who's good at analyzing music would be more likely to pick up on that shift that someone else may not recognize. Someone might accuse them of being a hipster when that's not the case.
What you described is a different level of BS though.
The modern day hipster, as a subculture, doesn't exist. Hipsters are just a strawman built up to shun anyone, doing anything, or acting in a certain way that you don't like. The only thing that's really consistent in describing a hipster is a snobby attitude.

The way I've always thought of it (important, seeing as there doesn't seem to be a general consensus) is someone who wants attention by grabbing onto esoteric culture, not someone who enjoys it. They attach themselves to it to feel smug and intellectual.
Though perhaps it's a bit narrow, maybe a better description is someone who partakes in the culture and feels smug about it, regardless of their motivation for assimilating the culture.

That would make sense. It doesn't fit a wide array of people either, and I think that's nearly objectively shallow and worthy of the derision hipster implies.
To be fair, I'll often call the culture hipster-y. I don't really mean to put the culture down, but it's the most concise way to describe it, plus I'm not really a fan. But I wouldn't call a cool guy into hipster culture a hipster. That's part of why I don't usually call it that in writing, I can make the difference obvious with tone but online you can't.

Some things that hipsters like, I like too. I don't consider myself one, because those things are coincidental. There may be a fair number of them, but there are more things I consider "hipster" that I don't like at all.
It doesn't mean I couldn't have a hipster friend who happened to be in to similar esoteric things. That's my reason why I can't hate them. Some people might consider me a hipster for some of my interests, but I'd have more things in common with those people than I would someone I'd consider a real hipster.
How does that "real" hipster feel about me? Am I also a hipster to him, or am I not "cool" enough? Where is that line drawn? I can't tell.
All social classes are fuzzy, especially when they are new. But I feel like as we go further into the information age and the homogenous society that started around the 50's this will be more and more true of each new group. "Hipster" imo is the first in a new age of vague, nebulous classes, but only time will tell. Eventually we'll probably get a clearer definition, hindsight always helps.
Yeah, seems like the same concept but for a different group. Add that plenty of authentic members still look down at people and I think we've got a new niche all its own.
This is not how a hipster would describe themselves. Obviously there is something more authentic than just a pose,'otherwise hipsters wouldn't exist as a subculture.
It's funny because a lot of things that are associated with hipsters became popular (especially some things being re-popularised) in the mainstream too but I agree with you, especially latching onto something harder the more esoteric it is and having to take it to extremes. Being vegetarian isn't enough, you have to be ultra-vegan organic and forage for all you own food. You don't just drink fair-trade coffee, it has to be that type of coffee that the jungle cat has eaten and shit out.
That's just people picking up hobbies at a greater rate than before mostly due to the internet. BY going with the snobbish definition of hipster, they are the ones that can't shut up about their obscure hobbies and how other people are doing their hobbies wrongly.

I think the term hipster massively predates the internet. It's not just hobbies in general either, but non-conventional ones, niche, and as another poster said, choosing those for the novelty rather than the sake of them.
The term predates the internet but people calling each other hipsters for having obscure interests is something that very much started after the internet had become mainstream.
The thing about the internet is that it allows non-conventional interests to flourish more than ever by making it much cheaper and less time consuming to find them and develop knowledge but it also allows you to do it in isolation so if you ever begin to think of yourself as an expert on whatever topic you're into, nobody can stop in and dispel this notions.
Even in the 90s, your interest in music was limited by the selection of your local record stores or radio station or the local live scene. And it actually cost time and money to develop an understanding of your favorite genre or band. I mean you had to buy the records and look carefully for the rare ones at garage sales or by asking around at record stores or maybe you just knew a guy that has a bootleg copy. And if you were into a live band that hadn't yet released an album yet, you usually had to get people to come along with you since going to see a band all by yourself is kind of boring even if it's your favorite band. Like if you were the only person in your entire town that listened to grunge, chances are that you either moved to some place where more people listened to grunge, like Seattle, or just stopped listening to the stuff because it just made you extremely isolated in your community. If you wanted to get interviews you had to find magazines or painstakingly follow the band on TV appearances.
Now you can just download the complete discographies of your favorite bands, watch a bunch of interviews on Youtube and read some forum posts and in a matter of weeks fool yourself into believing yourself an expert on whatever you are into. Since nobody in your mediate surrounding knows anything about this topic they can't call you out on your bullshit regurgitated or pedestrian opinions and you just never become humbled. So you can go around and be a stupid moron who really knows nothing about this topic and not even realize it until you happen to meet someone that just instantly recognizes the fact that your just got into the topic last month and calls you a hipster.

Makes sense. The ease in which people can drift between niche cultures has made it much easier to only indulge a base level of knowledge yet still internalize that into your image. Can't say I've run into this in the wild much aside from the occasional girl pretending to care about a topic for an ulterior motive...
Much like with emo a few years back, hipster is one of those things that may have had a meaning a while back, but current general usage meaning is almost as insulting as it is descriptive.
Being picky about entertainment (media, food, drink, concerts), sometimes to the point of finding fault in everything, as well as early onset nostalgia for (media, food, drink, concerts) things from the not-so-distant past are two pretty good indicators of hipster though.

Ehhhh I can't agree with you there. As a 21 year old I know a LOT of fucking hipsters. It's a lot more nebulous of a label, but there is definitely things that bind hipsters together. (I say this as a self hating proto-hipster)

I get what you're trying to say, but that's obviously not true. I know a lot of snobby people who are definitely not hipsters. They're snobby. Hipsters are contrarian, they try to have the last word, they reject mainstream in favor of something esoteric and rebellious-but-still-mainstream, they have annoying facial hair or look-at-me hairstyles/colors, and they spend a lot of money trying to look like they didn't spend any.

I always argue against the group think, don't care for social trends, have a degree in music so I know more stuff that other people don't know, will tell them about it and will totally listen to Taylor swift because only someone true to their love of music will rescind boundaries and embrace what is wideley disliked by counter culture. It's why I love reddit... Everyone's like that, and it means I can argue against a hipster groupthink!!

It really doesn't have a set definition these days, but one I usually see is as a reference to people who dress like they live in 1890, listen to washboard/banjo music, and hate what's perceived as "mainstream", among other things.

I feel this way about country western and challenge anyone to debate me on the topic. I live in a rural area and I can't tell you how over saturated it is with that trash genre of music. Regular country? bluegrass? awesome! Country western? Anti-intellectual trash with predictable and repetitive song structures, and lyrics that are usually low brow pandering to blue collar people and racists.
I do love Shania Twain though she's a guilty pleasure.
What gets me is how many of the country western fans will rip on things like rap and jazz, and they'll be adamant that rap isnt music and jazz is high brow snobbery that isn't accessible to the likes of farmers and other regular folk. But I guess these are the same people that will ask you why you're reading, and proudly tell you that they don't read.

Can we stop using the term "hipster"? People just have varied tastes, some of them not being as popular as others. On top of that hipster has become such a broad and derogatory term, it has gotten a little annoying. It probably would be tough to sell, but there are plenty of people that say "Meh, the Beatles may have started some trends, but their music is just pretty shit by today's standards". I could argue that that means they're underrated.
I realize it's an extreme example, but that was the point. I'm only trying to dismiss the "I personally consider this band well-known or liked, therefore it shouldn't be on this list!" attitude. You can easily skip the songs you know and dislike on a playlist, you're skipping constantly because you're disliking new numbers anyway, there's no need to be snobbish and say that At the drive-in is too well-known to be on it, I've never heard of them.
I mean...it's innately difficult to find anything truly obscure on reddit, just by nature of the upvote system. If you want to find lesser known artists, you gotta basically look for it yourself or try 4chan. They can be a bunch of pretentious assholes, but at least you have a better chance of finding something below the radar.
One of my favorite semi-unknown bands actually got mild success in /r/music a while back, a few hundred upvotes on one of their old tracks. Hey Ocean!, if you're familiar with the band.
I found that people are just gonna shit on your beloved band if it gets upvoted to the front, so, I guess I don't mind incredibly.
There will always be people who feel the need to trashtalk other people's taste. At the very least, a few hundred upvotes means the vast majority of people enjoyed it, so good on you for sharing something nice with others!
Largely unrelated fun fact: The lead singer of Hey Ocean! (Ashleigh Ball) voices two of the main characters of My Little Pony. Don't ask me how I know this.
I too use rateyourmusic along with sputnikmusic to find most of my stuff. Well, that and the occasional run through Pandora or Youtube. I probably should have mentioned that in my comment above, though I do strongly recommend never using only one site for music. Sputnik and RYM generally balance each other out, but RYM especially has some very strong biases.

"Original" is pretty much the weakest compliment one can give music. It's literally saying, "Well, no one's done it before, I'll give ya that." It says nothing about whether the result is good, just that it's different.
For example, I could smash you in the balls with a croquet mallet while singing the star-spangled banner in a purple leotard. That would be quite original. Listening to your reaction still wouldn't make pleasant music, however.

I didn't. I've heard a few of those artists in passing, but I've never listened to then, so this playlist gave me an opportunity to listen to them. They may be r/Music favorites, but that is much more removed from mainstream ears and tastes.
I keep picturing this rundown flat (somehow on the Upper West Side) lit by candles as some skinny dude in skinnier jeans sits down to a meal of organic tempeh with his Magic Pixie Dream Girl who happens to have a tasteful number of appropriate tattoos. Something like this, perhaps.

I mean, most of it isn't my kind of thing either, but I don't see how you could ever get a 10/10 list that pleases more than a few people. Hell, you throw me and a few friends together and we probably couldn't gather more than a dozen songs that we unanimously agree are perfect. Music is just incredibly subjective.
And yet the same thought still applies. Different people have different musical tastes. Whether you're 12, 20, or 60. Can't expect anything to appeal to everyone. It's not like there is some universal measurement of musical quality.
Not obscure to someone who spends time digging around for music, but unless you live in a big city, you're unlikely to hear any of that stuff unless you go out of your way. Or date a hipster.

Before the internet, there was Mary Toft.
TLDR: Woman sticks rabbit body parts into her vagina and says she gave birth to rabbits.

The guy who made the site also put out fake petitions to have the site shut down. People were outraged when they first heard of bonsai kittens because they thought it was a real Japanese trend, not just something an MIT student fabricated. All sorts of animals rights groups were contacted, look it up on snopes if you want more info or if you wanna fact-check anything I'm saying since I'm just going off the top of my head

Go to the web player, go to the settings, and there should be some option to open web links on the player. It may take a browser restart to apply, but once it works correctly, each time you open a playlist link it will show the "play on Spotify" option instead of using the web player. (For this you have to be logged in on the browser ofc).

Don't want users making alternate accounts and voting on shit they shouldn't be? Do something about it so they do or don't get a notification and prevent the vote. But don't just mark the account as 'shadowbanned' and disband them from humanity, fucking do something about it. Don't want someone innocent to do something bad? Don't let the UI permit it. Use cookies or something to identify computers, IP addresses, networks ...subnets...... something that doesn't have the potential to lock an innocent human who made "the mistake of voting on an alt" from the rest of the world

Reddit has proven time and time again that treating humans like shit is something they're totally OK with though.
If you are using two accounts from two different networks, how do you expect reddit knows they are the both you, either for a disable-vote feature, or shadow banning?
The admins can see activity on the back end and have scripts that they run to flag suspicious activity; whether it is iP adress nmatching or flagging voting patterns. There is a well known user who tells a story of getting shawdowbanned temporarily because his wife started an account and went through and upvoted a bunch of his posts.
Remember what the purpose of shadowbanning is. It is to weed out upvoting bots and other script bots that are used to manipulate voting and content. They would shadowban these nots instead of outright bans because they don't wnat the programmer to catch on the a bot as been caught so the programmer can start fresh and inprove the bot under a new account. This practice got extended to the regular human users mostly because Reddit has a small staff compared to site traffic and they automated the process. /u/spez has stated that he wants to end the practice of shadowbanning of real users who break Reddit rules but the development has not caught up with his statement yet.

If you can post but the posts won't appear here, then you're "shadowbanned" from /r/bestof
And I put shadowbanned in quotes because subreddits don't actually have the ability to shadowban someone. What they do is set their automoderator to automatically remove your posts, which is functionally equivalent to being shadowbanned from a single subreddit.
It's weird though, it seems like some of your comments are being removed and others aren't on this account. Maybe the people in charge set certain words or phrases to auto-remove out of laziness.

I noticed it right away and tried to comb through every single comment to see who would actually call that song underrated. Then, I just figured he put them in as a joke. Didn't think he'd update the entire list later on.

Yeah most people on reddit tend to upvote music made by people like them...ie white, male, whiny, and not as good at anything as they think they are. Lol. That's obviously a major generalization but it has rarely been proven wrong, especially in AskReddit music suggestion threads. I'm mostly into r&b, rap/hip-hop and pop music (including a lot of female artists) but I like at least some music from pretty much every genre and I've never found anything that even remotely appealed to me in one of these suggestion threads.

Yes you can. The moderators of a subreddit can add you to a shadowban list using Automoderator. It's not quite the same thing as a reddit-wide shadowban, but in practice it is.

Shadowbans are when you are banned site wide by admins. Being banned in individual subreddits is just being regular banned by moderators. When did everyone get the weird idea that everything is shadow banning the past month or so.
You can still see his reply's in /r/music, but you can't in /r/bestof. So apparently you can, or something. I dunno, don't really care, but if someone can post in a sub but people can't see it, that's shadowbanned right?

I have this perfect scenario in my head of some hipster, beaming with pride at a house party boasting about having the ultimate playlist of amazing music you haven't heard before. He carefully sets up a delicate sound system in such a way that it can't be fiddled with. Every room in the house has speakers hooked up to this one system. "Really bro, this playlist is KEY!!".
The partiers wait with bated breath for something new, different, unique. Something they've never experienced before. And then...
The next ten minutes all you hear are the opening guitar riffs of "I'll be there for you," repeated again and again as he frantically skips through the list hoping that the hallowed other songs are just a few more skips away. Spotify ads soon follow (of course he hasn't got a premium account) at which point the hipster screams bloody murder and rips the sound system apart, in tears.
I don't think I could have resisted filling the playlist with What's New Pussycat? and a single It's not Unusual, however I will admit that the Friends theme is more subtle.

I think the thing is, if he'd used a Rickroll, people would have caught on the moment it started. This way, the first time people hear it they may be like "Huh, surprising choice!", then five minutes later they'll wonder "Hasn't this been going a while?", and by the time they realise they've been trolled, they've already listened to it several times. You can get people much more thoroughly this way.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I listened to that playlist on my road trip yesterday and it was shit. I came across like 3 songs I enjoyed. It's a tough request for great music that no one has heard, but I did not enjoy that playlist.

He pretty much tainted that whole thing. I'm not a fan of trolling/pranking people in this manner. Imagine the shit storm if someone released a cool mod for a videogame. Then later released an update for it to dwarfed your character. Lots of people take gaming seriously and wouldn't like that. Same as some people who take music seriously. I don't remember the story all that well but the gist of it was that a lot of people in some subreddit all decided to pick a totally random youtube video by some unsuspecting youtuber and then everyone would go to that video and comment on it and stuff. Somehow /u/I_RAPE_CATS got to be the one to pick whose video was targeted used the opportunity to pick a video his friend had uploaded, so with all of the views his friend was able to monetize it and make money. This happened a few years ago I believe

I think he's talking about this a few years ago for the April Fools Video reddit does. The april fools joke was to pretend that a bland video was really interesting and like and comment about how great it was. The idea being that you tell people who weren't in on the joke about this really cool video and it's just some guy chopping onions or something but they would assume they were missing something.
The videos until then didn't have ads at all, and giving the uploader a surprise wasn't part of it in the slightest, it was done so we could play practical jokes on our friends who weren't in on it.

A video I uploaded a few weeks ago has 80k views so far and I have another one that almost hit 700k, but I've never monetized anything because I figured it would just be a couple dollars, plus I didn't want people to sit through ads to see my crap. Never knew you could make so much.

The amount youtube actually pays for videos is a secret, most likely because they, like everyone else, are probably willing to pay a bit more for premium talent and they don't want to make their rates public. Plus google's algorithms for calculating subscriber demographics and turning that into usable information to sell ads would be trade secrets.
However, I've read it's a bit more like $1000-$1500 per million views.
That's still pretty significant though. That means someone like say, Epic Rap Battles of History, makes $100k per video with additional revenue trickling in once videos are older, maybe a million in gross revenue per season? That would probably be commensurate with the budget they seem to have (employing 3-5 people in their production company, decent hardware but nothing super high end), still wanting to merchandise etc. If it were $8000 per million views they'd be rolling in the kind of cash that movie studios have. Of course, if you're someone like Jenna Marbles whose production costs are tiny, that's all profit.

That is high - it works out more like $1000-$2000 for a million hits. When it goes up to 50m you don't make 50 times that either. It all depends on who's watched it on what device as well. You tube works out peoples ad watching habits and if you're shutting ads down a lot they tend to go away a little more. Also if it's hosted else where as a featured video the ad's tend not to have pre-rolls so you can have 1m views and only pull in $800. If you have a video with 700k views you can monetise and pick the ad types people see. Otherwise Google is just taking that ad money anyway.

I'm not entirely sure how it works for sure as it's always changing - it seems that 6 months ago if it was watched on a mobile / tablet it had no ads - but that's not the case any more. But I doubt there's NOT ads on your videos. But yes - if you're logged in they'd probably forgo serving you an ad so you can see all the content. It's a bit annoying as it you add subtitles to something they clash with ads.

Long videos with a large target audience make the most money as well as those partnered with large MCN who can get great ad deals. They really never made much money off that video, and I can't believe you would think that.

It wasn't for underrated songs exactly it was for 10/10 songs that were unknown by most people. I listened to the top few songs and they were unremarkable, not 10/10 so I posted a great song that was genuinely popular but still unknown by a lot of people, including most of /r/music probably. I got downvoted for that.

i actually starred every song on the playlist to check out later. good thing i did too. the playlist is the same except for the order of the songs 50 songs in or so, give or take a song or two because a skipped over the plus button on spotify once or twice when i was mass adding/checking the songs. but all the songs are there that were on the playlist when it was gilded. I just reposted it and I suggest you star the songs as well and make your own playlist so I cant also troll you. but its not lost, at least not for me :)

Considering what people enjoy or don't enjoy is purely subjective I don't see how this is a non-meaningless statement. In other words, if I like something you don't like, it's not like one of us is right and the other wrong, we just like different things.
The problem I have with hipsters is they will begin not liking the same things they used to like just because others now like it. That exact same album or song they liked before they now don't like. Music (or TV or an app or a clothing style) has value only because their opinion is unusual.
It has nothing to do with the music (or whatever) and everything to do with them making themselves feel like a special flower or clever trendsetter.

Yes, exactly, different people like different things. I may like this different band and, as it gets more popular, they shift more and more towards a 'generic' sound. Someone who's good at analyzing music would be more likely to pick up on that shift that someone else may not recognize. Someone might accuse them of being a hipster when that's not the case.

The modern day hipster, as a subculture, doesn't exist. Hipsters are just a strawman built up to shun anyone, doing anything, or acting in a certain way that you don't like. The only thing that's really consistent in describing a hipster is a snobby attitude.

The way I've always thought of it (important, seeing as there doesn't seem to be a general consensus) is someone who wants attention by grabbing onto esoteric culture, not someone who enjoys it. They attach themselves to it to feel smug and intellectual.
Though perhaps it's a bit narrow, maybe a better description is someone who partakes in the culture and feels smug about it, regardless of their motivation for assimilating the culture.

To be fair, I'll often call the culture hipster-y. I don't really mean to put the culture down, but it's the most concise way to describe it, plus I'm not really a fan. But I wouldn't call a cool guy into hipster culture a hipster. That's part of why I don't usually call it that in writing, I can make the difference obvious with tone but online you can't.

Some things that hipsters like, I like too. I don't consider myself one, because those things are coincidental. There may be a fair number of them, but there are more things I consider "hipster" that I don't like at all.
It doesn't mean I couldn't have a hipster friend who happened to be in to similar esoteric things. That's my reason why I can't hate them. Some people might consider me a hipster for some of my interests, but I'd have more things in common with those people than I would someone I'd consider a real hipster.
How does that "real" hipster feel about me? Am I also a hipster to him, or am I not "cool" enough? Where is that line drawn? I can't tell.

All social classes are fuzzy, especially when they are new. But I feel like as we go further into the information age and the homogenous society that started around the 50's this will be more and more true of each new group. "Hipster" imo is the first in a new age of vague, nebulous classes, but only time will tell. Eventually we'll probably get a clearer definition, hindsight always helps.

It's funny because a lot of things that are associated with hipsters became popular (especially some things being re-popularised) in the mainstream too but I agree with you, especially latching onto something harder the more esoteric it is and having to take it to extremes. Being vegetarian isn't enough, you have to be ultra-vegan organic and forage for all you own food. You don't just drink fair-trade coffee, it has to be that type of coffee that the jungle cat has eaten and shit out.

The term predates the internet but people calling each other hipsters for having obscure interests is something that very much started after the internet had become mainstream.
The thing about the internet is that it allows non-conventional interests to flourish more than ever by making it much cheaper and less time consuming to find them and develop knowledge but it also allows you to do it in isolation so if you ever begin to think of yourself as an expert on whatever topic you're into, nobody can stop in and dispel this notions.
Even in the 90s, your interest in music was limited by the selection of your local record stores or radio station or the local live scene. And it actually cost time and money to develop an understanding of your favorite genre or band. I mean you had to buy the records and look carefully for the rare ones at garage sales or by asking around at record stores or maybe you just knew a guy that has a bootleg copy. And if you were into a live band that hadn't yet released an album yet, you usually had to get people to come along with you since going to see a band all by yourself is kind of boring even if it's your favorite band. Like if you were the only person in your entire town that listened to grunge, chances are that you either moved to some place where more people listened to grunge, like Seattle, or just stopped listening to the stuff because it just made you extremely isolated in your community. If you wanted to get interviews you had to find magazines or painstakingly follow the band on TV appearances.
Now you can just download the complete discographies of your favorite bands, watch a bunch of interviews on Youtube and read some forum posts and in a matter of weeks fool yourself into believing yourself an expert on whatever you are into. Since nobody in your mediate surrounding knows anything about this topic they can't call you out on your bullshit regurgitated or pedestrian opinions and you just never become humbled. So you can go around and be a stupid moron who really knows nothing about this topic and not even realize it until you happen to meet someone that just instantly recognizes the fact that your just got into the topic last month and calls you a hipster.

Much like with emo a few years back, hipster is one of those things that may have had a meaning a while back, but current general usage meaning is almost as insulting as it is descriptive.
Being picky about entertainment (media, food, drink, concerts), sometimes to the point of finding fault in everything, as well as early onset nostalgia for (media, food, drink, concerts) things from the not-so-distant past are two pretty good indicators of hipster though.
Like that guy doing all the talking in the book of Ecclesiastes, saying there is nothing new under the sun...fucking hipster.

I always argue against the group think, don't care for social trends, have a degree in music so I know more stuff that other people don't know, will tell them about it and will totally listen to Taylor swift because only someone true to their love of music will rescind boundaries and embrace what is wideley disliked by counter culture. I feel this way about country western and challenge anyone to debate me on the topic. I live in a rural area and I can't tell you how over saturated it is with that trash genre of music. Regular country? bluegrass? awesome! Country western? Anti-intellectual trash with predictable and repetitive song structures, and lyrics that are usually low brow pandering to blue collar people and racists.
I do love Shania Twain though she's a guilty pleasure.
What gets me is how many of the country western fans will rip on things like rap and jazz, and they'll be adamant that rap isnt music and jazz is high brow snobbery that isn't accessible to the likes of farmers and other regular folk. But I guess these are the same people that will ask you why you're reading, and proudly tell you that they don't read.

I realize it's an extreme example, but that was the point. I'm only trying to dismiss the "I personally consider this band well-known or liked, therefore it shouldn't be on this list!" attitude. You can easily skip the songs you know and dislike on a playlist, you're skipping constantly because you're disliking new numbers anyway, there's no need to be snobbish and say that At the drive-in is too well-known to be on it, I've never heard of them.

One of my favorite semi-unknown bands actually got mild success in /r/music a while back, a few hundred upvotes on one of their old tracks. Hey Ocean!, if you're familiar with the band.
I found that people are just gonna shit on your beloved band if it gets upvoted to the front, so, I guess I don't mind incredibly.

I too use rateyourmusic along with sputnikmusic to find most of my stuff. Well, that and the occasional run through Pandora or Youtube. I probably should have mentioned that in my comment above, though I do strongly recommend never using only one site for music. Sputnik and RYM generally balance each other out, but RYM especially has some very strong biases.

"Original" is pretty much the weakest compliment one can give music. It's literally saying, "Well, no one's done it before, I'll give ya that." It says nothing about whether the result is good, just that it's different.
For example, I could smash you in the balls with a croquet mallet while singing the star-spangled banner in a purple leotard. That would be quite original. Listening to your reaction still wouldn't make pleasant music, however.

Some dude made a website explaining how to make "bonsai kittens". Basically, they're baby kittens that you put in a jar and then they grow up to be shaped like the jar, like square watermelons. The guy who made the site also put out fake petitions to have the site shut down. People were outraged when they first heard of bonsai kittens because they thought it was a real Japanese trend, not just something an MIT student fabricated. All sorts of animals rights groups were contacted, look it up on snopes if you want more info or if you wanna fact-check anything I'm saying since I'm just going off the top of my head

Go to the web player, go to the settings, and there should be some option to open web links on the player. It may take a browser restart to apply, but once it works correctly, each time you open a playlist link it will show the "play on Spotify" option instead of using the web player. (For this you have to be logged in on the browser ofc).

Nah of course. I don't have any sources anymore but some people were getting banned for accidentally upvoting something they already did on an alternate account (work / home accounts or something) and that type of shit sucks. Why leave that type of issue up to your users.
If you don't want users to do something in your UI, don't let them. Fix the broken system

Yeah.. well I mean. This is only an issue to me, becuase I may one day fall into the trap of shadow banning by accident at that rate.
I sub to the same niche subreddits (sysadmin, various music subreddits) and I don't want work to know my personal account in any way shape or middleman form etc etc.
So it happens sometimes. Naturally I undo it.. but like, what if I forget some day? Then bam both shadowed.
But, to get defensive about it...
If it's such a fucking bad thing you would think the system wouldn't let you do it. Enforce your rules etc.
In web design and programming php with databases and all. I've always gone by the idea that if you don't want to risk a client / user doing something they shouldn't.. don't let them.
That sql injection that you just pretend users wont see or figure out -- should be patched
that development button that's really hard to see but clears all the recent activity that you accidentally sent to production and hope end users wont see? -- Shouldn't even be risked
....
Don't want users making alternate accounts and voting on shit they shouldn't be? Do something about it so they do or don't get a notification and prevent the vote. But don't just mark the account as 'shadowbanned' and disband them from humanity, fucking do something about it. Don't want someone innocent to do something bad? Don't let the UI permit it. Use cookies or something to identify computers, IP addresses, networks ...subnets...... something that doesn't have the potential to lock an innocent human who made "the mistake of voting on an alt" from the rest of the world

The admins can see activity on the back end and have scripts that they run to flag suspicious activity; whether it is iP adress nmatching or flagging voting patterns. There is a well known user who tells a story of getting shawdowbanned temporarily because his wife started an account and went through and upvoted a bunch of his posts.
Remember what the purpose of shadowbanning is. It is to weed out upvoting bots and other script bots that are used to manipulate voting and content. They would shadowban these nots instead of outright bans because they don't wnat the programmer to catch on the a bot as been caught so the programmer can start fresh and inprove the bot under a new account. This practice got extended to the regular human users mostly because Reddit has a small staff compared to site traffic and they automated the process. /u/spez has stated that he wants to end the practice of shadowbanning of real users who break Reddit rules but the development has not caught up with his statement yet.

If you can post but the posts won't appear here, then you're "shadowbanned" from /r/bestof
And I put shadowbanned in quotes because subreddits don't actually have the ability to shadowban someone. What they do is set their automoderator to automatically remove your posts, which is functionally equivalent to being shadowbanned from a single subreddit.
It's weird though, it seems like some of your comments are being removed and others aren't on this account. Maybe the people in charge set certain words or phrases to auto-remove out of laziness.

Yeah most people on reddit tend to upvote music made by people like them...ie white, male, whiny, and not as good at anything as they think they are. Lol. That's obviously a major generalization but it has rarely been proven wrong, especially in AskReddit music suggestion threads. I'm mostly into r&b, rap/hip-hop and pop music (including a lot of female artists) but I like at least some music from pretty much every genre and I've never found anything that even remotely appealed to me in one of these suggestion threads.

I think the thing is, if he'd used a Rickroll, people would have caught on the moment it started. Well that's a bummer. I fell in love with the first song on that list and didn't get much further because I had it on repeat. Didn't use Spotify all weekend. I bet there was a lot of gold on there I'm going to miss now.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I listened to that playlist on my road trip yesterday and it was shit. I came across like 3 songs I enjoyed. It's a tough request for great music that no one has heard, but I did not enjoy that playlist.

Yeah no. Most of this thread is talking about people being insensitive. This is really a dick move by OP. People downloaded and gilded the OP because they appreciated his selfless contribution. He pretty much tainted that whole thing. I'm not a fan of trolling/pranking people in this manner. Imagine the shit storm if someone released a cool mod for a videogame. Then later released an update for it to dwarfed your character. Lots of people take gaming seriously and wouldn't like that. Same as some people who take music seriously. Everyone has their own sense of humor and it doesn't always include practical jokes. Just my two sense on the situation.
tl;dr Save those kind of jokes for your personal friends who enjoy that kind of thing.
