I'm sure many of you have realized you're going to sleep 2 hours too late and want to fix it. You try to sleep 2 hours earlier, but it doesn't work so you end up falling asleep at your normal time and waking up at the same, late time. This is because if your body is not ready to sleep, it won't have a good sleep and you won't feel good the next day.
Over a few years of mountaineering, I have had to adjust my body many times to new time zones and specific climbing start times. If you just YOLO it and wake up with 3 hours of good sleep, you can make bad decisions and get yourself into serious trouble. Luckily, a friend showed me a good way to reasonably quickly alter your sleep schedule, while actually making it stick.
Here is the cycle
Eat: On the day you want to make the change, eat 1 hour earlier than normal. DO NOT EAT ANY SNACKS AFTER. Set your alarm for 1 hour earlier than you normally wake up. Go to sleep at your normal time.
Wake: You will wake up groggy. Immediately get up eat food. This forces you out of bed and then locks in the food cycle starting 1 day earlier. This also forces you to get up but hunger should be a good motivator since you've eaten earlier before. Carry out your day as normal while eating your meals an hour earlier than normal
Sleep: Go to sleep 1 hour earlier than normal. This time, you should be able to fall asleep at the right time since your whole cycle is now off by 1 hour. If not, repeat steps 2-3.
Wait: Wait until this 1 hour cycle feels like the new normal. This will help your body lock into this slightly earlier rhythm
Repeat: Start over steps 1-4 another hour earlier. Remember to make sure you feel normal before repeating the cycle again. This can take 2-3 days sometimes.
Why YSK: This cycle lets you quickly and permanently change your sleep habits in a way that doesn't completely destroy your system. It is extremely useful if you notice that you are going to bed or waking up at unhealthy times and want to change it.

Yup, this whole thing assumes you have some level of self control to be able to maintain the habit/schedule. When a lot of people's poor sleep schedule is directly related to a lack of self control

Not only self control, but stability.
If I want to sleep at 4am the weekends, this strategy will only get my sleeping schedule back in check by like Friday, which is when Id want to sleep at 4 am again.

I have a work schedule that ends every night around 10 to 12am. If nothing goes wrong, I can reasonably get home and sleep by 3. But more often than not, either I'm stuck at work or public transportation fucked me, bye bye 3am sleep. And it happens way too many times for me to have a stable sleep schedule.
PM_ME_GARFIELD_NUDES ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 18:11:31 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I think the problem is that people think self control is โwantingโ to do something, so they wait until they want to get out of bed. I struggled with this until a few years ago, I realized I was never going to want to get out of bed but I had to do it anyway. I think this came after being given some managerial responsibilities at work because I had never realized how slow and lazy people are haha. There are some people who just wonโt do anything unless you ride their ass and make them work. Once I noticed that I also saw it in myself and was able to start being my own manager. No one else is going to tell me when to go to bed or wake up, I have to be responsible for that. Thereโs an adult in my head that tells the child in me to get out of bed, even though I hate it.

If I may, I don't know that this particularly assumed one has or has not the discipline based off of the subreddit entitled "YSK" the OP is merely putting the information out there believing that those who come to this particular subreddit for information that "YSK"
Now, if this was in r\diacipline or whatever other subreddit may exist and this information was posted there, then it would imply that one would have to or fail from not having the aforemention and this is what they'd need to do in order to succeed.
Sometimes those with our without discipline are still in total darkness and don't have an inkling something like this exists and something like this is (subjectively) easy\hard to follow.

People get hungry on a schedule, it's part of the circadian rhythm
Unless you're really busy and/or wake up, go to sleep, and do stuff at different times of day every day, you might too even if you don't realize it

"eat one our earlier than normal" I almost laughed out loud. Also this thing with hunger would be a motivator to get me out of bed because I did eat an hour earlier than normal? usually I don't get hungry at all until the afternoon. And if no adult responsibilities stop me, I'd be perfectly happy go just get out of bed in the evening for my first meal of the day.
I'm actually little disappointed in how utterly unhelpful this YSK is

I'm rather fond of the term "extemporaneous". It's officially somewhat synonymous with "impromptu", but my Public Speaking teacher taught us that to impromptu is 100% made up on the spot, whereas extemporaneous is more like 50%-80% made up because you've had some (but not total) preparation.
However, the third main definition from the above link contains a great phrase too:
I feel so called out by this it's almost not even funny!

gene100001 ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 08:00:19 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Many of the treatments for ADHD like Ritalin massively suppress hunger. So I guess it's that combined with a general lack of organization and schedule.
Like if you're disorganized you rely on hunger to tell you when to eat, but with the medication you don't feel hunger. So suddenly its the 9pm and you realize you haven't eaten all day
Scandickhead ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 10:28:32 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I know some ADHD people who are always hungry without meds. Still hungry with the meds, but not "getting fatter by the minute" type hungry.
Also, the meds actually help people snap out of their fixation when their body wants something.
gene100001 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 11:34:17 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah I also think the hunger suppression isn't a universal side effect, it's just very common.
Also yeah like you said once it wears off your hunger can come back strong, leading to you eating way too much in a short period of time. I think this was more of an issue with the original form of Ritalin which has a rapid release and therefore wears off faster. There are extended release versions now that stay steady for longer so it's a bit easier to manage
Scandickhead ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 11:46:36 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Yes I agree, I can see how the surpression can be an issue for some. At least they aren't handed out as diet pills for "bored" housewives anymore.
Thirst surpression can be an even bigger issue. The meds cause dehydration anyways, and if you don't feel thirsty you might not drink all day.
TheMadTemplar ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:15:47 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Ritalin fucked me up for a long time. Turned me into a zombie.
newarre ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:50:26 on February 11, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Same here. I refused to try any other options for years until covid and work from home hit. Wow was that hard for me. Doc told me how there are multiple groups of ADHD drugs and it's common for one or two groups to zombie you. That doesn't mean the others will.
I'm on Adderall now and it has been life changing.
I do things. Even things I don't want to do without that same mental hurdles. Wild. I cried for all the lost time, effort, and frustrated when I first went on it. I can't describe (though I know you get it) how much wasted everything there was before finding the right meds. It did take some trial and error to find the right meds and the right strength, but it was definitely worth it. Might be worth asking your doc to put on on a few trials
TheMadTemplar ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:53:29 on February 11, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I was on Ritalin as a young kid for a few years then Adderall the rest of my childhood. Going off it was definitely bad, but for awhile being off Adderall meant I was happier, more excitable, and had stronger emotions. Then depression ended up dulling everything anyways.

I've had ADD my entire life and its never given me touble eating. Unless I'm taking medication that suppresses my appetite like Adderall. It's a spectrum though so I'm sure people have it worse than me and maybe that's an effect for them.
newarre ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:59:23 on February 11, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Differently than you. Yes it's a spectrum, but not just in total severity. Each symptom can be a spectrum. I suck at remembering to eat, I am awful at non-instant communication (if I have to call back, send an email later, text when I done somet6, etc...), I verbal vomit and over share constantly, I hyper focus like crazy on new job hobbies, ...list goes on..., but I'm the least physically hyper person I know, I got good grades in school, zero risky behaviors, listening skills are mixed, ...list goes on...
Someone else could have the exact opposite profile, who's further on the spectrum? It's nuanced. Plus comorbidities can make it even harder to dig into.
Nother1BitestheCrust ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 14:57:57 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I'm unmedicated with ADHD and I have trouble eating regularly. I get hyper focused on work or whatever and just forget or it seems like too much work to stop and figure out food. I do better if I have a lot of little snacks prepped for the day and can just grab one of those when I know I should eat.
Dinner is the only consistent meal I have and that's 100% because that's the meal I share with my husband and he does most of the cooking.
glitchinthemeowtrix ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:50:37 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
It can go either way - some people binge eat because it's a way to get dopamine without meds, and that's what our brains are always trying to do. So you will see a lot of people who struggle with either eating too much or too little... we are a people of extremes lol.
Some of us just hyperfocus and genuinely forget to eat, or you don't have anything easy to eat and doing all the steps to prepare food seems too overwhelming that you just... don't. I struggle with this whether I'm on or off meds.
A lot of us also have comorbidities that can impact our ability to eat - I have a lot of extreme sensory issues/possibly AFRID (avoidant food restrictive intake disorder) so eating for me has always been a challenge, whether medicated or not. I can be starving and then take 3 bites of my food and suddenly my body just sort of rejects it and I feel like I'll throw up if I keep trying to eat. Super fun!
And certain meds are worse than others - I've been on medications that obliterated my appetite and made food seem disgusting. But now I'm on a medication that, once I adjusted to my dose, I get a regular appetite.

Doctors don't always believe in ADHD, or sometimes they erroneously believe you "grow out of it." It's not something you can grow out of, all you do is adapt band-aid strategies so it is less obvious to people interacting with you.
You'll need to see a psychiatrist that specializes in it to be sure. They know. They give you a test. You then talk about the test. Legally I think the test is the evidence, but I think they usually figure it out before they even add up the score. When you see it every day, you catch all the subtle clues most doctors would miss.
My doctor didn't believe me. My psychiatrist and clinical testing demonstrated I have it pretty bad. It was hard for people to notice because I was self medicating with exceedingly high doses of caffeine since childhood. The right medicine at the right dosage has a lot less side effects than the amount of caffeine I was taking.
YMMV.

Ugh, that's rough. I've still been figuring out things about ADHD over the course of the last 6 months, but I've heard that support & awareness for it is very sparse where I live, so I worry that I might end up in the same situation as you were. I'm still in highschool and don't feel comfortable telling my folks about my suspicions, so I'm trying my best to graduate despite my seemingly chronic inability to focus or do any actual work, hobby or otherwise.
This shit SUCKS in a way that most people just don't seem to get. I really hope we can all get the help we need to get our shit together soon. Much love & respect, good luck on your journey.

Yeah, pretty much this. I just eat when I'm hungry. I'm currently unemployed and I rarely eat more than once a day. I'm just not any hungrier than that. As to when . . . Whenever.
Today, I ate once around half past noon. I'm going to bed now at 2:30am. I'm not even remotely hungry.

You have 250 upvotes ( right now) cause lots of folks are like you. I am. But I think the three meals a day comes fromโฆ.. once again, being mislead by our government. Make a food pyramid chart and tell everyone they need three square meals a day and 8 hours of sleep. Thatโll keep them in line as well. Makes the grocery shopper have to buy more food for the household. Keeping Frito Lay and Kellogs and all the other brands in business. They need us to purchase stuff for meals three times a day plus snacks to help their CEOs stay so rich theyโll never be able to spend all their money. Does anyone really sit and eat three meals a day and get all the proper nutrition they need? I doubt it. I believe what you typed is the way lots of folks are or they are transitioning to that in the near future. Prices are too expensive to be eating like we used to.

I honestly am shocked to have this many upvotes. I have never met anyone else who eats like me, but I have to build my work around 10am and 3pm meals or I will be completely worthless. With those meal times, I'm a powerhouse. This conversation about ADHD is also really fascinating me. I wonder if I should look into that....

Lol fuck that, I find the sensations to be personally offensive. If my body is so goddamn hungry, skip the drama and start eating the fat I've helpfully stored for it.
Sometimes I'll be going to make lunch or something and then my stomaches starts growling and hurting, trying to force my thoughts to food. Bitch, I was already making you some goddamn food and you need it a hell of a lot more than me. When stomaches pulls that shit I stop making lunch and ride out the tantrum for a couple hours.
One of these days it'll learn it's lesson. Lately it's been doing this shit where I wake up already hungry pain style, just lmao dog if you think we are ever putting in real food before noon.

Set a cutoff for yourself in the evening and never eat after that point. Then move it earlier until your sleep schedule is where you want it. It sounds like crap but it works. I usually snack in the evening and find myself with plenty of energy to do whatever I want into the early hours of the morning. When I stop eating at 6PM, I am exhausted by midnight.

Hold up, this is a symptom of ADHD?
CTeam19 ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 07:08:57 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
This tendency is due to an under-awareness of hunger signals, and is a major problem when a person with ADHD is trying to gain control over their eating. By under-eating, hunger builds up over the day so that control over intake is overwhelmed by the urgent need to eat. Basically, ADHD turns your own hunger into Bruce Banner till the Hulk comes out aka you realize you need to eat and you have issues with Binge Eating Disorder (BED).
ADHD is sooo wonderful it has a lot of things it is comorbid with.
at_work_keep_it_safe ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 07:51:29 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Was a weird moment when I realized I binge eat due to undiagnosed ADHD. Lack of dopamine and low impulse control. Once I had an explanation I was able to establish methods to curb it. Lost like ~65lbs over 2 years with barely any exercise (besides hobbies iโve been doing my whole life).

I'm hungry right now but it doesn't bother me so I don't get up to eat. There is a different kind of hunger feeling that's more bad, when I get that I better eat. I'm rarely hungry in the morning and sometimes I won't eat anything or just a glass of juice till maybe 2 pm.

Worked at Scout camp and the one thing not allowed to be delayed was meals. You could set your clock to when food was being served. The worst part was the repeated menu. Nothing like the same meals at the exact same time of day and same day of the week for 8 weeks in a row.

It might be helpful to try to normalize that, decision fatigue is a real thing and it includes relatively trivial things like deciding what/when to eat. If you don't see the need to, then disregard this!
thetransportedman ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:25:28 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
How? Anyone that works a regular job should eat before work. At a lunch break. And then a certain time after they get home. With consistent breakfast and lunch times, that makes your hunger time at dinner pretty regular. And now your body is used to three times so you eat during those times on weekends too
kauapea123 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:39:03 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
And this is the reason so many people have no self discipline, and can't go to bed or wake up at a reasonable hour. You don't have to eat at exactly the same time, but keep it to within a half hour of a set time.

The other issue with this, is that if I'm hungry I can't sleep. And when I sleep like shit I'm not going to want to eat immediately after waking up, because I feel awful.
The only thing that works for me to 'permanently' change my sleep schedule is the absolutely terrible system of simply staying up later and later until I go to bed at a normal time. But it's extremely disruptive for a week.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:30:07 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, I just don't sleep one night and power through the next day. It's always worked for me. If it's on a Sunday, I'll just burn that whole day playing video games...engaging but takes no energy.
Used to have a month off every year and would start back to work on a Monday, so would always do this on the Sunday.

URETHRAL_DIARRHEA ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:35:41 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I prefer to keep it consistent but occasionally I'll stay up later if I'm out with friends. Generally involves taking some stimulant late though, otherwise I'll get super sleepy.
camerynlamare ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:34:13 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
This actually jet lags your system for several days and can disrupt some if not many of the beneficial aspects of good sleep. A sleep schedule you can stick to, even on weekends, revolutionizes the sleep you'll get. It's better to consistently get 5 hours of sleep every night, if that's all you can get, than to get 9 -> 7 -> 10 -> 5. Your body does REALLY well with routines.
LadyFreightliner ยท 89 points ยท Posted at 03:49:17 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

I eat very randomly and it's probably not good but I'm okay with it. Like I've seen others say, sometimes I don't eat for like a couple days and I won't notice at all. Then I'll think, when was the last time I ate? Then say "oh shit" and I'll eat for a while, sometimes a few days and sometimes a few weeks but then I'll just stop again and won't notice. Rinse and repeat ๐

People are different. Had a coworker that ate the same lunch everyday for the years that I knew him. Bag of 6-8 of the baby carrots, strawberry yogurt, small bag of chips, ham sandwich. No variation at all. Wasn't a random bag of sunchips or a blueberry yogurt. Didn't bring in leftovers. Didn't even try a turkey sandwich.
That would have driven me mad even if it was free. I love variety and often try different flavor combinations that should never be blended.

Curious, what's your daily schedule like that you dont eat around the same time every day? I go to work at the same time every day, so naturally I wake up and eat breakfast at the same time. I eat lunch during my lunch break which is at the same time every day. I leave work at roughly the same time every day, go to the gym then I'm usually ravenous and eat dinner right after. All this leads to me eating meals at the same time everyday, or at least at very predictable periods

Now that I have a daughter with a regular bed time, dinner time is almost exactly 7 pm every night. Getting her down at 8 is important both for her sleep schedule, and because I get free time after she goes down. So yes, regular dinner times have somehow become a thing at my house. Is eating at the same time everyday really a healthy habit though? If anything forcing yourself to eat when not hungry just because the clock tells you to seems like a bad thing.

If you plan your meals accordingly it is.
LadyBugPuppy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:17:28 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Intermittent fasting is so healthy for most adults, and in this lifestyle you do follow a schedule.
StarblindCelestial ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:59:46 on February 11, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
The reason it's healthy afaik is just because it keeps you from snacking and gaining weight. I wouldn't call myself an intermittent faster, but I just naturally snack very rarely while never keeping an eating schedule. If I do find myself snacking it makes me eat less later (or because I didn't eat enough prior), unlike many overweight people who will treat snacks as extra calories and not a portion of the calories they should be eating. So a schedule may help you keep to IF which in turn will make you healthier, but the IF not the schedule itself is the healthy habit.
Side note that's rather pedantic, but I always find it kind of funny to call things like IF healthy. The IF itself isn't adding anything that makes you healthy, it's merely taking away something that was making you unhealthy. It's kind of like saying not smashing your head into a wall is healthy for you. The goalposts have been shifted from [snacking=unhealthy, not snacking=neutral] to [snacking=neutral, not snacking=healthy]. I know I've probably just got a slightly strange/annoying definition of it in my brain, but I always find myself thinking that about "healthy" things.
LadyBugPuppy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:05:19 on February 11, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
No, the schedule is literally the most significant thing. IF gives your body 16+ hours of fasting per day. During that time, the body not only starts burning fat but also engages in cellular repair and even autophagy. Thatโs actually the main reason I started to do it, as IF may reduce your chances of getting cancer or Alzheimerโs (and other conditions, but those were the ones I was interested in). Itโs good for your immune system and reverses aging.
StarblindCelestial ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:20:55 on February 11, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Looking into it there's more benefits to it than I had thought, but I disagree with the schedule being the most significant thing. The fasting is the significant thing, not the schedule. The schedule is just what helps make the fasting easier, but the fasting itself is the main thing. You can easily maintain a schedule without it being IF. For that matter you can even IF without the strict schedule of eating at the exact same times every day.
Eating at 12 and 18 one day, 10 and 17 the next, then 13 and 20 still gives you 16 and 20 hours fasting respectively while having inconsistent meal times. You've likely looked into it more than I have so you probably know that there are even more inconsistent methods of IF (since the 16 hour fast every day is only one method of IF). Like eating a different number of times depending on the day which would mean not eating at the same times every day. Maybe the strict schedule is important for you to be able to maintain your specific method of IF because it either comes naturally to you or you've trained your body that way, but others can do it without the schedule.

Dinner is always between 6:30-7:00pm, nothing to eat until bed time at 10pm. I typically don't eat again until around midday the next day, but it entirely depends on my schedule and how busy I am. The other day I had bloody meetings and couldn't get a chance to eat until 2:30pm.
I find that I get hungry from 9:30am until about 11am then it subsides and I'm good to go until whenever really.

I also avoid electronic screens 3 hours before I go to sleep, this is really best.

Not that something is wrong, just that there are things you need to do until it's sleep time and eating at a set time is more efficient so you have more time of your "free time".

DoctorWaluigiTime ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:14:12 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Time Restricted Eating, or TRE, is a pretty important aspect of maintaining a good circadian rhythm. Your gut needs time to rest, and reactivating it (even by having so much as a single bite of food) gives it less time to do so. It can be mid-recuperation then you grab a snack. Now it'll be in active mode for some time after.
(NOTE: Water does not activate anything, and can be had any time.)
As suggested here, your last bite should be several hours before bed, ideally. If you can limit when you eat to anywhere from 12 hours per day (say, 8 AM to 8 PM) down to 8 hours per day (10 AM - 6 PM is what I currently practice), that alone can help align your circadian rhythm, and it can yield more health benefits.
Read more in Dr. Satchin Panda's book, The Circadian Code. Goes into way more detail. And every chapter is loaded with the scientific sources / studies backing these sorts of claims.

I think oneโs life stage has a big effect on the stability of their schedule.
When I was in my teens/20s, dating, childless, etc., my schedule was actually way less predictable because I could commit to whatever I wanted and that meant sporadic meal times and sleep schedules. In high school/college, maybe I had a rehearsal or practice and dinner would be late or maybe Iโd get home early and eat early. Maybe I had to study into the wee hours or maybe not. In my early career days, it was all about the hustle. Some days, Iโd have lunch meetings, or happy hours, or Iโd be on the road at conferences. Other days, it was straight up GTL at 5PM.
Now, Iโm in my late-30s, married, working 40-50 hours a week consistently, and have a toddler. Weโre on an incredibly dialed schedule and my meals and sleep schedule are extremely consistent. Itโs the easiest way to keep things stable. Save for some emergency, thereโs virtually no deviation from our daily schedule at all.

Intermittent fasting, eating at the same times, working out at the same times, and sleeping at the same times are all just as good for your health as simply getting sleep, working out, or eating healthy.

It basically seems to boil down to- eat early the day before and don't have any snacks before bed. Set your alarm for an hour earlier than usual. You should now be hungry when your alarm goes off. Eat straight away after your alarm goes off and stay up. In the subsequent evening, go to bed an hour earlier too. Since you had already got up early that day, you should be tired enough to sleep. You have now adjusted your sleep cycle by one hour
i-am-dying ยท 73 points ยท Posted at 03:49:29 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I have a serious question about this tho: being hungry does not make me tired, it just makes me hungry and I personally have a really hard time falling asleep if Iโm hungry which leads to me actually staying up later. Do normal people actually sleep better when theyโre hungry before bed? Also, who the hell eats at the same exact times every day? I canโt remember the last time I actually ate a meal at the same time 2 days in a row let alone every day of the week. I guess my schedule is just more random but I still fail to see how this would work at all.
BennyGB ยท 44 points ยท Posted at 04:04:09 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
In this, you're not supposed to go to bed hungry, you wake up hungry. Eating earlier the night before and forgoing snacks makes it easier to both wake up and get up the following morning but it should not affect hunger at night.
If eating 1 hr earlier and going to bed at your regular time without snacks makes you hungry, you were already eating too early for your bedtime.
i-am-dying ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 04:19:34 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Eating earlier and forgoing snacks would make me hungrier at night though.. thatโs the whole point. Eating earlier means you get hungry earlier
HelmSpicy ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 08:25:47 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Other people replying don't get you, but I totally do. I cannot tell you how many times I'll wake up after like 3 hours of sleep absolutely ravenous and cannot fall back to sleep, despite being exhausted, because I'm too hungry.
The point of the post is to "adjust to wake up 1 hour earlier!" Not to "wake up and say up sleep deprived because I'm too hungry to sleep through the night".
i-am-dying ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 16:33:41 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Once Iโm asleep I donโt generally wake up, but if I am hungry before bed I just cannot sleep, even if itโs half of a granola bar or like a glass of milk, I just need something to get rid of that empty stomach feeling. Most nights Iโm totally fine, I donโt need a snack before bed, but I do know trying to eat an early dinner and then having nothing else all night would leave me hungry and unable to sleep, especially because that first night I wouldnโt be going to bed any earlier, I would just be hungry.
ButterNuttz ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:50:43 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Are you eating lots of carbs before bed?
When I would eat toast before bed, I found i would wake up crazy hungry in the middle of the night - but when I didn't eat I wouldnt be hungry until 10am or so.
Found out eating carbs before bed caused my blood sugar to spike, and then a few hours later it would crash which signaled to my brain that I was hungry and needed food at like 3am.
I stopped eating carbs before bed (in general tbh) and found my hunger is much more regulated throughout the night.

You get hungry earlier yes, but SHOULD only feel it in the morning. If you feel it before bed, that's another habit/cycle that comes in play.
I don't think myself could work out the proposed schedule. I don't have a "current" schedule to begin with. But that's the idea presented.

You misread what I said- the aim is not to be hungry when you go to bed, but to be hungry when you wake up an hour earlier in the morning. It has now been the normal length of time since your last meal.

I used to be like that too (still am sometimes) until I started seeing a therapist and realized my extreme nausea and first thing morning headaches were physical manifestations of anxiety. Since Iโve been paying attention to my mental health, I have less instances of waking up ill. Took me 20 years to finally realize it was not normal waking up nauseous every single day of my life.
Luxxanne ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 11:27:54 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
It's actually pretty normal to feel bad eating food right out of bed if you're used to taking morning medicines. A lot of things you should take in the morning specifically should dissolve in an empty stomach, so you get up, take the pill, then have to wait half to a full hour before eating. And you get used to it. Trying to eat before that would make you feel nasty because your body is not ready for food.
But yeah, it's worth looking into it if there are no reasons for a person to be used to eating later. Could be something, could be nothing.
Jupiter_Crush ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:32:09 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Conversely, try never being hungry in the mornings but needing a pill that requires you to take it with food if you don't want stomach convulsions all day.

I've developed a habit all my life to rush into school and work and never give myself time for breakfast. Now it's a meal I pretty much only enjoy as a lunch or if I'm on vacation waking up early but not rushing anywhere.
Using hunger as a motivator to get out of bed is probably the last thing on my mind. Sleep satiates hunger pretty well. I don't even feel hungry until a couple hours after waking even if I skipped dinner all together.
bomdiggitybee ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 08:03:05 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
On days I get to work from home, I just lounge in bed with my cat during that extra time! Way better than making a breakfast I'll barely nibble on anyway.
This advice is decent for people who thrive off regime and are food motivated, e.g., my cat, but I prefer to exist in chaos.

The part about eating is pretty true. Your sleep schedule heavily depends on your eating schedule. That's how I usually fix my jet lag. So to make OP's post a tl;dr, just make your meal schedule fit with your desired wake time window, your body will adjust for you.

bitchyswiftie ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 08:04:02 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I've had this happen a few times and I can attest to its accuracy.
I regularly eat on a schedule. I used to do it because of a diet but now I just do it because it feels right.
Every time I eat at 6PM, an hour before my usual dinner 7PM, I feel tired by 11 instead of 12 (my usual sleep time).
I've noticed this before too, but I never knew it also worked for other people...
Edit: this is purely anecdotal. It worked for me, it works for OP, I don't know if it'll work for you. Alls I'm saying is, don't shake it off till you try it.

Jahonay ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 11:51:01 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
It's a poorly worded explanation of chronotherapy.
I spent YEARS in highschool/college trying to fix my delayed sleep phase syndrome and chronotherapy eventually worked, but I modified the approach a doctor gave me. The healthy way the doctor recommended to me is to go to bed 15 minutes earlier every day until you're at your goal sleep time. You need to be incredibly controlled, consistent and able to journal well. This did not work for the chaos goblin highschool student with horrible ADHD.
What I did in college was stay up through the night, then attempt to go to bed the next day at a reasonable time. So I would stay up for 24+ hours and go to bed at say 10PM. This ultimately worked but took maybe half a dozen attempts. I would drink a couple monsters in the morning to keep me awake, and take melatonin shortly before going to bed. You need to keep that same sleep cycle for years going perfectly or else you end up back at square one. It's been probably 8-10 years for me since I fixed my sleep cycle. I wake up around 4am-6am these days consistently, in college I would fall asleep around that same time, lol.
The most broadly applicable sleep advice I can give people is to stop eating 4-5 hours before you want to go to bed. Get some daylight in as early as you can, maybe install some grow lights and keep an indoor garden in your bedroom so you get some natural sunlight. And lastly, if you use a laptop/computer/cell phone at night, install programs that dim the brightness of the screen to as low as you can go without causing eye strain. On windows I used pango media brightness. On phones there are usually apps which will lower the brightness past the factory settings, they usually have timers on them too. Then I scheduled the app so windows would turn it on a couple hours before i go to bed every night. Flux and other blue light filters did absolutely nothing for me. But dimming the screen is one of the most important ways to help your sleep imo. I think anyone can do those 3 things, and for me they're all super helpful to get into the habit of doing.

I've tried the food thing and it works. To make OP's point simple: eat accordingly to your desired sleep schedule, your body will naturally take care of the rest.

No it isnโt. Itโs telling you to use the time you eat as a lever, not just the time you go to bed. This works, especially the โdonโt snack afterโ bit. I used to think that having something to eat in the evening helped me sleep. Now Iโve discovered that eating earlier and then absolutely no snacks or caloric drinks improves my sleep patterns immensely.

Yeah, and as someone with an inconsistent eating schedule at best and who can consistently stay up an extra 2-4 hours later than the last day most of the time, this advice wouldnโt work at all for me. Apidium ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:57:52 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
It works in general for most folks as your eating schedule (if you have one) often aligns with your sleep schedule. Making amendments to both may help when trying to alter one. It doesn't work for eveyone nor all the time but it won't hurt most to try and see if it does work for them.
It's phrased terribly mind you. Which I agree with. It's also hopeless for folks who don't have a rigid schedule of when they eat.
Zealousideal_Leg3268 ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 06:12:45 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Also the wait step of "do this until it's normal" is literally just trying to get your sleep schedule back on track the regular way, but now with extra steps preceding it.
Blackintosh ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 06:53:12 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Also the only really important part here is forcing oneself out of bed at the same time everyday. It might take weeks but it will shift the sleep schedule.
Most people fail at this part because it is damn hard to do after having only 3 hrs sleep.

Especially since being hungry makes it harder to go to sleep normally. Maybe because heโs incredibly physically active, itโs less of an impact but I donโt know that this would work for someone who is doing a desk job
DoctorWaluigiTime ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:16:52 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah also you really shouldn't eat the instant you get up. Unless your last bite of the day is at least within 12 hours of that. If you want to wake up easier, go outside and soak in those lux from the morning sunrise! Light in general is a direct "wake-up" signal to the brain (which is why limiting night at night, 10-11 PM to 4 AM or so, is also critical). I'm simplifying the way it works a ton here, but tl;dr your eyes are one of the only direct pathways/exposures to the brain, and we have an innate response to light for waking/sleeping patterns.
Source: Dr. Satchin Panda's book The Circadian Code, which itself is thoroughly sourced from scientific studies and the sort. Lots of good info in there about maintaining a proper circadian rhythm.

No, not at all - people that are in to fitness (which it sounds like no one on this thread ever does any) usually eat 3 + meals a day, & maybe a couple snacks also, b/c they're trying to gain/maintain muscle, or they burn a lot of calories exercising, which makes them more hungry. If all you do is sleep & play video games, you're probably not going to be very hungry.

For example, how you view sunlight in the morning and sunset will set your circadian rhythm via the pineal gland and it's release of melatonin.
Yes, eating does have implications in wakefulness and starting the digestive systems and blood/glucose relationship, but one can also feel "sleepy and groggy" if the digestion of carbohydrates raises their glucose and satiety levels promoting a sense of "sleepyness" or wanting to nap.
For those that are more interested in the biology/neurobiology of how to fix your sleep schedule, I would recommend listening to Andrew Huberman's Podcast. His first podcast explains the mechanics of the body and its' neurotransmitters. A bit "nerdy" or detailed, but I like thorough explanations that are objective and not "wordy" or subjective.
My tip in a nutshell? Wake up in the morning to get some AM sunrays, ideally right as it rises but no later than 10-11AM, through your eyes, while not staring directly at the sun. Eat, exercise. Sunset sunrays in the eyes, again not staring directly. Reduce the use of screens and other blue light emitting at night time.

I work in the field of respiratory and sleep physiology. If someone's circadian rhythm is as bad as OP is suggesting, we get them to go the other way around the clock, not trying to sleep earlier. Sleeping earlier is much more difficult than staying up an extra hour.
Umarill ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 10:06:27 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
That's what I've been doing for years. Bad insomnia + chronic depression, I just go with the flow but when I need to adjust my sleep schedule (upcoming appointments for example), I just go around the clock.
I physically cannot sleep ealier unless I take sleeping meds, and I would have to abuse them a lot since my sleep rythme gets fucked up on the regular, so that's about the only solution that works.
Vertuhcle ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:43:52 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
This is how Iโve fixed it for years, just stay up another 2-4 hours. Iโll either take a nap one time at night for 8 hours and adjust, or Iโll press the schedule all the way around and be good in 4-5 days.

Any advice for someone who's schedule seems to not be 24h long and is always drifting?
airmaximus88 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:32:27 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Does it predictably drift? The sleep foundation has some information for people with non 24-hour disorders.
What I would say is that the majority of the cases we see are poor sleep hygiene. It's reallllllly rare to have an actual non 24, it's more likely that they don't realise their habits are impacting their sleep in an odd way.

airmaximus88 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:58:39 on February 11, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
First question I ask is 'why are we treating it?'
Does it interfere with life or normal function? If so, try waking at the time you want to be awake. Immediately expose yourself to bright light. Avoid caffeine later in the day and don't nap. Avoid bright light and stimulation in the evening and go to bed when tired. Repeat and your cycle should sort itself. You'll be tired during the day for a bit but do not nap!

I wasn't doing it to brag. Just to point out that "just do a heavy day of cardio" isn't relevant to mountaineers. I mentioned using this technique to adjust before big mountain climbs so his tip "just do a mountain" wouldn't work for someone like me.
Also, just to put things into perspective, 18 hours and 11k vert isn't that big once you break into the big mountains. Nobody in the mountaineering community would see it as a brag.
The Glacier Peak 1 day route is what I'm currently training for and that's 32 miles and 10,800 ft of vert. The hardest trail in my local area (Bend, OR) is 5 peaks traverse which is 16,000 vert and 36 miles and also involves extremely technical climbing. People have sent that in about 12 hours. Olympus west is also on my list and that's 41 miles and 8,000 vert but I'm not sure if I can do that one any time soon.
I know it looks like a brag to people missing that context but it's really not.
Leviticusmc4 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 10:02:08 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Extremely technical climbing at 3mph gaining 16k??? Who is doing that?? Thatโs faster than the average person just hiking on flat ground. Something doesnโt add up. Itโs either not that technical or no way itโs being done in 12hrs.
๐๏ธ GameAndHike ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:30:44 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Only around 2 miles is extremely technical. The other 34 are pretty "tame" with just Class 2 bouldering to slow you down. Also, someone sent the Eiger North Face (multi day ascent for most people) in 2.5 hours so don't underestimate what's possible.

I have a not uncommon delayed sleep cycle and I also suffer from severe insomnia for the last few decades. Your tips are basic and not helpful for the majority of people.
Not everyone likes breakfast, and eating breakfast for one day will definitely not help someone with sleeping issues fall asleep an hour earlier than not.

Basically your advice for people struggling with a sleep schedule was to sleep at times you suggested. It doesnโt even make sense

As someone who has tried every piece of advice for 15 years, itโs so cute when someone tries to help. Oh Iโll wake up groggy? Iโm always groggy. Iโll be more hungry in the morning? What sort of to-the-millisecond lifestyle do you have where 1 hour difference would affect your hunger in the morning? By that logic if I sleep in 3 hours on the weekend I should be starving. And Iโll be tired the next evening? Iโm glad you live a blessed life.. the whole obstacle here is that if you have insomnia, a poor sleep schedule, or trouble waking upโฆ you have no idea when youโll be tired if ever. Iโm only ever feeling awake at night. I feel groggy for most of the day. If youโre at the point where your sleep is so regular that one hour makes a difference youve already won most of the battle

What did the doctor say about it that helped you? I couldnโt even get as far as them doing a sleep study cause they said nothing is wrong with meโฆ while I havenโt been able to sleep for 20 years even as a child. Itโs also expensive at a private clinic where they might care. Do they just offer sleeping pills or what can they change?
dootdootplot ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 09:11:05 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Speaking from experience, itโs not about quality of sleep, itโs about being unable to fall asleep until youโre completely exhausted. I sleep just fine, I can get a solid 8 hours if I just let myself fall asleep and wake up whenever I feel like itโฆ but apparently the entirety of human civilization has taken it upon themselves to prevent me from indulging in that practice. ๐

Depending on the type of sleep study, you may be able to do it at home (they give you the monitoring equipment and tell you how to use it). I'm not a doctor, but from what I understand they can still get useful information even if you don't sleep well in the clinic. Even if you're only able to fall asleep for a little bit, they can monitor the type of sleep you're getting and can get useful information.
My sleep disorder causes insomnia as well as excessive sleepiness. Sometimes I go days where I only get a few hours of sleep and others I sleep 17+ hours a day and am still exhausted.

Start listening to huberman. It may not fix you but it'll give you details and tools to try based on the best known scientific literature. I've always struggled with getting to sleep. I'm OK once I get there. The biggest impact on sleep is light. Your body sets its internal clock based on when you get exposed to bright light in the morning or whatever your sleep cycle is.

Sounds like you shouldn't give advice that is purely anecdotal and pass it off as biological facts on how to change your sleep schedule.
Your advice is only useful for people who have extremely regulated lives already and absolutely do not suffer from sleeping disorders or psychiatric disorders that lead to sleeping issues. I'm not sure I even know people in my life who eat at such regular hours that they'll feel a 1 hour change, and I can tell you with 100% guarantee that there aren't a single insomniac on this planet that eats at such regular intervals.
Your advice to fix someone's sleeping schedule only work if your whole like is already on a schedule. What a brilliant idea.

I'm sorry you're dealing with that, and lol at these people suggesting a doctor/sleep study when none of them can actually help insomnia. If you haven't, look into acct therapy or cbti. it's got me reliably sleeping the same time every night, still have issues with waking up after 4 or 5 hours, but it's better than going a month or two without sleep which I've done before
nicecupoftea1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:59:32 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)*
This is me to a 't'. I'm groggy all day long. If I feel awake at all, it's only ever at night (and sometimes not even then). But I almost never feel sleepy tired, i.e. yawning and nodding off, so I get no cues as to when I can go to bed and quickly fall asleep.
I can also skip a meal and several hours can pass before I start feeling hungry. On top of that, I've got Crohn's disease so my digestion is borked. I've tried eating earlier in the evenings (I stopped snacking late at night years ago), and it makes no difference. In the thousands of sleeping tips I've seen, none of them has ever told me how to get high quality sleep whilst suffering from abdominal pain and discomfort. In fact any sort of chronic pain is disruptive to sleep.

I'm probably missing something but I find that if I stay awake 1 night then go to bed late enough that I'll sleep until I want to wake up, it works for me. Obviously tired the first day. I bounce between night and day shift frequently, this idea is best I'll try it next month, but I've always just stayed awake 26ish hours slept for 8, tired first day then been fine.

I knew a guy that treated day shift like night shift. Once he got home around 3:30 pm he would go to sleep for 8 hours and wake up in the middle of the night.
Most people won't be able to do that but maybe it will help some.
bananatheswitch ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 04:08:52 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Keeping a good sleep schedule is based on when you wake up, not when you fall asleep.
You want a healthy 8 hours of sleep. Quality of sleep is just as important as quantity of sleep. 9 hours of sleep means nothing if you woke up every hour.
Wake up 16 hours before you want to fall asleep. This great chemical called adenosine will build up, and peak about 16 hours after waking up. You'll sleep amazing.

bananatheswitch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:01:09 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
It gets tough trying to get a good amount of sleep especially when you have no free time. But that adenosine is gonna keep building up till you accidentially sleep for 14 hours ๐ it's happened to me before.
Fun fact, caffeine doesn't actually decrease adenosine in your system, it supresses the effects. And it keeps building up. That's why when it wears off, you feel like you want to die.

Honestly, like some other said this is pretty anecdotal.
What really helps though, as already mentioned is to actually get tired. So the easiest way to achieve this is by getting exhausted after a sport session. Any time in the day just do a good workout like jogging/swimming/weight lifting or a combination until you are really exhausted. Ideally this should happen not right before you sleep but at least an hour or so before.

Also a climber with many years of Alpine starts, and man, this sounds like nonsense.
I get into the right schedule on a mountaineering objective because I force myself up on day one before sunrise and then bust my ass in the mountains until it's time to find a bivvy. You fall asleep easily on a multi day objective because you're getting a full day of heavy physical and mental stimulation. Your sleep schedule gets into shape because you don't have much you can do after the sun goes down, what with the lack of electricity.
Yeah, my sleep schedule is great when I'm in the mountains. It's all the life outside of that that causes my sleeplessness. The real advice here boils down to "can't sleep? Go knock out some 14ers, you'll sleep like a baby."

That's like telling an alcoholic to just stop drinking if he wants to stop drinking.
If someone can't get out of bed there is no point telling them to just do a morning run or to just take a shower, as they have a problem with actually getting up instead of going back to sleep.

I hope one day to take this seriously.

Fellow adhd here!
That's not the best advice. For some people it works, but for many it doesn't, especially if there is adhd, insomnia, depression, or literally any other factor is involved. Just wanted to put it out there so you don't get discouraged by another failed system. It's the system, nit you
Good luck with college! I'm rooting for you, internet stranger :)

Edit: Seriously though this is good advice. Iโve been a shift worker for the past 7 years and Iโve worked almost every shift you can think of, with a lot of that being some flavor of overnights. Iโve found that keeping your eating schedule consistent is key to a consistent sleep schedule, especially when youโre trying to stay awake during hours your body normally wants to be asleep

It's because of breakfast. Your body cares more about eating than sleeping and will change your sleeping patterns to accommodate your eating patterns. If you eat your breakfast at the same time every day, it will be easy to set up a satisfying sleeping pattern.

Don't take the nap, that's the problem - skip it and you'll fall asleep earlier at night. If you nap, then you'll always go to bed later, and you'll never correct your sleep schedule. That seems pretty obvious, tbh.

My sleep schedule is all over the place. Twice a week i work from 4am to 10am, most of the time without having slept prior. Then i sleep for 3-4 hours when coming home, study for my classes and play video games until i get tired again which is at like 1-2am. On days i don't go to work i drive my sister to her work at 6am. So after sleeping for 3-4hours before driving her, i come back home and am not tired for another 12 hours so i then fall asleep at like 7pm. Rinse and repeat and i feel tired and miserable all the time. I'm gonna try this out to hopefully get my sleep schedule back on track.
TheMalteseMisfit ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:59:07 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
Something you can also do to alter your waking schedule is to use heat. Raising core body temperature by means of a cold shower will shift your waking time to a later waking time if done before sleeping. Dropping your core temperature by using hot water/bath will make you sleepy and can make your waking times sooner.
The food concept is based on "stress", which can also be applied to other forms of stress like exercise (exercising as soon as you wake up makes it more likely that you'll keep waking up at that time).
MrSquigles ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:05:26 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

There's no science backing up what you say but here's what would happen to me using your method.
1) Eat early. vomit as my system rejects a large amount of food prior to expected meal time
2) Wake up groggy and very hungry. Eat, vomit again because eating immediately after waking up in the best of circumstances will fuck with my system.
Don't assume everyone is like you and take your bullshit somewhere else.
Xiaxs ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:57:40 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
See for me the problem is I don't have a set sleep schedule or eating schedule. My eating schedule can range from 3-4 hours before/after noon for lunch, for example. They wouldn't be "breakfast" or "dinner" either cause I eat when I'm hungry and typically one meal does it for me.
And my sleep schedule completely depends on what I have to do that day and what time I work at (I always nap before work to get more time in the day early on).
So I doubt this can work for me.
kauapea123 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:20:26 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
It could work for you, you're just to lazy and undisciplined to try - stick to an eating schedule, cut out the naps, and wake up at the same time every work day, you'll end up feeling sleepy earlier in the evening in no time. Everyone has different things to do day-to-day, and lots of us still manage to wake and sleep at roughly the same times and get adequate sleep.

While I'm sure this works, it requires a commitment to eat at the same time everyday, something not everyone has access to. Im thinking of my boyfriend who works shifts, meaning some days dinner is at 7 and some days its at 5 and some days at 1030. Even in my 8-5 job, most days I can't leave at 5.
We've ended up just having a after work routine. No matter what time either of us gets home, we each have about a 2 or 3 hour end of day routine depending on our workout days.

I just take zzzquil to ensure I fall asleep on time for a few times while getting up immediately after the alarm. I then stop taking it after I'm naturally tired. About 3-4 days. The zzzquil makes you a bit groggy for those few days but it works.
Also, ignore alcohol like the plague.

This isnโt a critique of this method, itโs just that after thinking โoh thatโs pretty smart, maybe I could do thatโ I came to an instant realization that was kind of funny.
As someone prescribed 50mg of Adderall daily for Narcolepsy, absolutely none of this discussion applies to me. I basically eat before I take my meds and eat again after they wear off, whatever time that may be for the given day and what my schedule for the day is. When I donโt take them (in between prescription refills, or just when I oversleep) my โsleep scheduleโ is literally 18-20 hours per day of sleep. Oversleeping for me can actually mean sleeping for almost an entire day.
When the refill has been egregiously late due to error at the pharmacy or doctorโs office (has happened twice in 4 years) and Iโve gone without meds for a week or two Iโve kept up that 18-20 hours per day schedule the entire time, and the entire time felt like I wasnโt sleeping enough. For anyone wondering this goes a bit beyond โoversleeping makes you more tired not lessโ
I always had issues with being late to work for oversleeping, would basically go to sleep as soon as I got home from work, and also sleep during all of my breaks and lunch breaks before I was diagnosed.

Lol assuming you have a set schedule already for your daily routine. I eat anywhere from 11am to 5pm only once and I change it day after day.

A brute force way that I use to quickly adjust to daylight savings is to just stay up all night and go to sleep at your new preferred time, no naps. 4-5am is the toughest to get past, but after that it's similar to just normal bleh on Mondays.
Don't overly rely on this method too much, as you are going down a full night's sleep.

I think itโs better to pull an all nighter the day before you want to fix your schedule than by the next night youโre exhausted so sleep however early you want. Obviously results may vary and not the safest idea lol

I have been in sleep therapy with a doctor for months who has been able to treat my insomnia that Iโve had since I was a child. She runs a sleep disorder behavioral center. None of the above is how she treats her patients. The โgo to bed an hour earlierโ is exactly the opposite of what she tells her patients.

I eat between 2-4 meals a day, and I don't think I've eaten meals within even 2 hours of the same schedule as the day before. Do people really legitimately have 3 meals a day a the exact same time every day? Same for sleeping; I'll go to sleep anywhere between 10pm and 4am and it's never the same day to day, it depends on what I have to do that day.

Alright here is to anyone with commitment problems
Instead of being early, be late, instead of eating early, eat 1-2 hours late, instead of waking up early, wake up 1-2 hours late so you can stay awake more, stay awake 1-2 hours more (play games for 2 more hours like I do). This way you don't feel like shit 'cause you woke up early, get to play more games or watch movies, and still change your cycle
I do this all the time before my lectures start, my sleeping cycle turns 180 degrees when I come for holidays
You should be able to change your schedule in a week at most, much less if you can stay awake for more hours

Did I get it right...? It might take 2-3 days to adjust a single hour?
I've taken ~10-11h trips to places 5-6h ahead/behind many times in my life. I usually adjust the very first day, 2 days tops.
And I always get hungry when traveling, and can eat 1-2 extra meals during the trip. So for me at least, I don't see how moving one meal and hour would really change anything, especially since I have a very loose schedule in general and never eat on a schedule.

Yeah nah hahaha I hate these posts, they're so anecdotal and don't say anything of substance. Like what, to sleep better, do everything earlier, including sleep! Then, do it for weeks, until you sleep. Like, no shit? People can't manage that, that's the point, but yeah whatever go brag about your new "hack" hahah

Interesting. I've always wondered about that dinner to bedtime gap (4-5 hours) and this seems to go hand in hand with that. Thanks!
๐๏ธ GameAndHike ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:18:45 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
I've heard it's 3 hours but was never able to find a credible source so take that with a grain of salt. The most common explanation I heard (again, never from a credible source) is that your body needs about 3 hours to digest whatever you're eating which takes a lot of energy. This means if you eat within 3 hours of bedtime, your body is working hard when you're trying to sleep.
kauapea123 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:35:19 on February 10, 2022 ยท (Permalink)
If you have that big of a gap between dinner & bed, sounds like you need to go to bed earlier - I'm usually done eating dinner 6:45 - 7:00, and go to bed 10:00-10:30, get up at 6:00 for work, and I'm never tired.

I know the day shifts are shorter this time but not always the case.
