I hate to be the "but the Irish" guy here. But seriously we Irish have wildly inpronouncable names. Just ask my sister Caoimhe.
It took forever to make my American friends believe that I wasn't fucking with them when I said it was pronounced "Owen"

I didn't know that until a while after I read Artemis Fowl, and thought the author's name (Eoin Colfer) was "eee-oyn" (first part as in "ear", second part as in "coin") and thought it kind of sounded like eeyore. Then I learned and realized that made much more sense.
I cant stop laughing. Imagining him getting pissed off at an actual grand prix. He just starts yelling "OWEN!" every time a car passes while Eion Colfer is just shaking his head like 'dude it's ok.'
I'd like to think he has some hearing loss only hears certain parts of a car going past's tone and it sounds like all cars are saying "Owen" to him. And that Eion's name is really pronounced Eeeeeooooiiiiiin.
Go to a live reading if you get the chance. I try to catch him anytime he's in NYC because it is audio silk to hear that man read his work (which is fantastic onto itself).
Séamus - the little line over the e changes it to an "ay" sound. Its how you get a lot of the sounds in Irish. The same thing happens in Seán to give the a an "aw" sound.

Aye, tis McSwiggen Village, where the hills are green, the streams are clear, and the sweaters are so thick even the boniest-fingered nun could poke you in the chest and it wouldn't bother you none.

Is that from a movie or something? Because it literally sounds like rural towns in Ireland.

Ah I remember that. I distinctly remember the plane landing on beer bottles.
Im gonna be honest though buddy, the small towns in Ireland are very similar to that.
I live in a small town, lived in the city for a while when I was in college, and there is fuck all to do other than go to the pub.
The only thing I can think of is the pool hall, the bookies, and the card club (poker/blackjack) and all of them are full of tramps and, including myself, drunk peoples.
I always thought it was pronounced like Ian. Oops.
Also, my cousin is Sean. Not too unusual but my grandpa did think that my aunt named her child scene at first.
[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 03:05:23 on July 22, 2017 · (Permalink)
No, see, Eoin to Owen at least sort of makes sense if I say it with a bad fake accent. How the actual fuck am I supposed to say Caoimhe, I honestly don't even know where to start there.
The Gaelic alphabet doesn't use as many letter as English does so certain combinations of letters represent sounds that don't always look normal in English
E.g. Eilidh (ay-lay)
actually wait i just laughed to pronouncing it shibo-han chiff-on and it rihymed funny, but it's pretty funny properly pronounced too

I knew a couple. His name was Chenil which is pronounced Shuh-nee and her name was Shawnee. Sp they were Shawnee and Shuh-nee, but it was more fun to refer to him as Chin-null.
My wife is Irish and she's super big into her heritage,I'm Italian but don't care(only Italian thing I'm into is pizza and pasta). Whatever makes her happy, kinda wish we went with an Irish middle name for our daughter (fionnuala Autumn). We're both atheist.
Or in the case of the Iron Druid Chronicles, the main character's name is Siodhachan O Suileabhain which i would have murdered if it weren't for the audiobooks.
I know how to pronounce it. I'm Scottish, and my name is in fact Eilidh. I was just commenting on it because ceilidh isn't really a given name, it's a social gathering.
They're a mess to try and pronounce when going off of the spelling alone, but usually once you hear it, it's just like 'oh, okay.' I gotta be real, some non-white names, usually Asian ones, I can hear 10 times and still go 'what?'
At least there's the alternate spelling for most of them, which are wildly common and for the most part easy. It saves us the trouble of having to pronounce it for anyone who sees it
Also, my IRL name is an Irish derivative. Almost nobody spells it correctly, or even pronounces it correctly. It's not even difficult. It's a derivative of Kerry by the way.
yeah man, names like siobhan, aobheann, sorcha. mostly women's names though I've noticed. i literally can only think of eoin and oisin that get pronounced wrong
Can confirm, am Irish. Was placed in MALE dorms when I started college because instead of believing my name belonged to a girl, they simply believed I selected the wrong gender box.
See, but at least there's a reason for your names to be spelled strangely for English pronunciation. What angers me is when I see someone names Jorja (pronounced Georgia)
This is like when I saw the name Siobhan, inside my head I'm like "cy-o-bon?" and come to find out, it's "Sha-vawn". The name Sean too when you think about it (looks like it should be "Seen" but pronounced "Shawn").
I have Finnish relatives on my mother's side and they have some funky ass names too (there's a town named 'Kristiinankaupunki'). I always laugh when these people think mispronounced names only have to "POC". Finns, Irish, Poles, Russians, and a lot of other white countries have some really confusing names.
NJ_Bob · 1 points · Posted at 13:31:44 on July 22, 2017 · (Permalink)
Just talk to anyone named Shawn that spells it Sean. Fucking Micks.
I read through all these replies, but thinking about polish names instead. I get a lot of polish customers at my job and they're always really surprised that I can say their name correctly
If that's how she pronounced Caoimhe then she was actually pronouncing her own name wrong. It's a super common name with only two accepted pronunciations, the "e" at the end can't be a long "eeee" sound in Irish
And theres much worse than that if you go back a few hundred years or read any of our mythology.
Edit - to make matters worse, we have three or four different dialects, so your name gets pronounced different depending on which part of Ireland you're from. So in a way you're always right, but always wrong
Edit 2 - and we only use a 19 letter alphabet so we got pretty creative.

This motherfucker just said that nonwhite people have stupid names.
He really didn't. The guys obviously a fucking dillweed, but you're barking up the wrong tree with that specific criticism. He's certainly making the assumption that the poster he's responding to thinks non-white names are dumb (which is a retarded assumption), but he isn't himself suggesting that their names are dumb.
I know what you're saying though. "The responder immediately thought of non-whites when 'stupid names' were mentioned! That must mean he thinks non-white names are stupid!" Nah, it's more like he just immediately jumped to racism because he's a stupid, overly politically correct jackass.

My husbands cousin named his kid Kynadi. Why? Why can't you just name her Kennedy? Why is it so bad to give them a normal spelling for a name everyone already knows? As someone with a unique name, she won't thank you.
Though I met more people with terrible names in the Southeast than in Utah, just sayin'
[deleted] · 31 points · Posted at 20:47:42 on July 21, 2017 · (Permalink)
What I see a lot of here is people with normal names, just spelled the most idiotic ways possible. It's like they just take names and throw in a dozen extra vowels and call it a day.
The southeast has a lot of Scottish, Irish, and German ancestry (to the point that there are towns like McClellanville. Want to guess who settled there?) When you mix those three, you get quite a few...unique...family names. Throw in a dash of French, and....yeah...
Cajbaj · 22 points · Posted at 20:38:31 on July 21, 2017 · (Permalink)
Can also confirm, from Utah. I'd rather have the most common name for my age group nationally (which I do) than a lot of the names people get here.
While we're on the topic, Zipporah/Tzipora is a badass name.
I knew a Christian couple who named their kids Matthew, Mark, Faith, Hope, and Charity. One of my old boyfriends is named Matthew Mark, and I always joked that he should name his son Luke John.
I think it's just a rich white American thing. I'm from Illinois, and have stumbled across shits like this. My brother had little league when he was little with a kid named Starbuck (no s). Also rang someone up while cashiering once who kept yelling at her children, 'Wolfen' and 'Loola.'
Help me out here, what's with the hate for names out of the ordinary? I have two kids and they have regular names but I've never thought twice when I meet their friends and it's a less than normal name. Should we all be named John or Jessica?
Hopefully, middle class white people adopting these names will weed out the racism. In the future, it won't automatically make me think you're black. Just that your parents had poor taste in names.
No one should be discriminated against for the decisions of their parents, I'll say that much.
But that being said, people need to realize how important names are. Naming your kid "Ferrari" or "La-A" or "Aragorn" might seem fun or cute when they're young but that kid has to go into job interviews some day and introduce themselves with that name. If you want your kid to succeed, you should think about their future - starting with the one thing that will probably be used as their first impression on everyone they will ever meet. I really don't think that being lower class is a reasonable excuse for that.
I agree with this. There was a thread somewhere on reddit that had to do with cops and interacting with people with different, unusual, or odd names. There were a few doozies but I couldn't help but cringe with kids named after liquors or weed. Names like Hennessy or Kush.
I mean...they could be the next Picabo Street (Peek-a-boo) and become an international sensation. She has a sibling named Baba Jomo Street. Her parents are Roland and Dee street. I'm pretty sure they were hippies.
I totally understand wanting to give your kid a unique name. But for their sake, just make your creativity show in their middle name, then they have a choice.
Lmao, thanks haha. I agree with the Brandys and the Margaritas. I'm just saying Kush is sometimes used as a social political thing about Africa and wasn't always a drug reference.
The Kingdom of Kush or Kush () was an ancient kingdom in Nubia, located at the confluences of the Blue Nile, White Nile and River Atbara in what is now Sudan and South Sudan.
The Kushite era of rule in Nubia was established after the Bronze Age collapse and the disintegration of the New Kingdom of Egypt. Kush was centered at Napata during its early phase. After King Kashta ("the Kushite") invaded Egypt in the 8th century BC, the Kushite emperors ruled as pharaohs of the Twenty-fifth dynasty of Egypt for a century, until they were expelled by the Assyrians under the rule of Esarhaddon.
Yeah, I fucking hate mine, Changing it will involve going somewhere, giving them 50$, filing a form, apparently you have to run an ad in the paper disclosing it, go to court, explain to them why, in some order.
All this shit because they couldn't give me a sensible name.
I don't know what I want to be called either though.
If you want to be creative with your kids name, do it. With their middle name. If the kid hates it, they can just use the initial. Strider would be great middle name.
I dunno man, the future success and livelihood of a person's children isn't necessarily more important than the parent's ability to tell all their friends how cute and novel a name they came up with.
I'm happy as can be that I was given a one syllable, normal name. Sure it's not unique, but I wouldn't trade it. No nick names, no complications, just a simple name to identify me.
And the womxn spoke and let loose a breeze of queefs built up from decades of oppressions. All around her the patriarchy fell ensnared from the hairs of her unshaven body, they quickly suffocated on the beautiful womxnly smell of the decaying flesh of all the male embryos she eliminated at planned parenthood mixed with menstural blood yogurt she’d been brewing inside of her preparing for this day. You don't think of those names as white trash? I think this bitch almost has a solid point, but imo it's just classism. If you really don't characterize a girl named Tyffyny vs. one named Tiffany differently, you're a unicorn. That's an easy choice a writer might make to be sure a reader does just that. This girl is being foolish because it also happens within the black community where just like the rest of the US, wealthier families tend to have more traditional names.
I totally thought it was an avocado spread on toast when I first heard of it, until I found some actual avocado toast and realized my mistake. I laughed a bit. The things we randomly don't know, right?
I'm sure avocado toast exists, but the stereotypical hipster thing is definitely just spreading avocado on toast, just look at the first page of google images for "avocado toast"
In order to say "it's called being racist", that means you're already assuming that this person is talking about people of different race - and judging by the profile picture, that means non-whites.
So if you're going to say "it's called being racist", you have to assume that - when race isn't mentioned at all - that non-whites are the only people with names "that are spelled incorrectly/stupidly". That assumption is racist.
It's therefore racist to say that this is racist.
Also seriously if you're dumb enough to give someone a name spelled like "Shequarandurhuh" and then pronounce it "Steven", sorry, but you're a fucking idiot.

Yeah, I realize it's not racist to think that the Irish and Welsh are idiots, but lighten up a bit.
I guess I'm racist and classist then. A couple years ago, I was close with my English teacher (role model, cool guy, same interests) and we would frequently exchange gossip, and we had a good long laugh when he told me about a girl in my class named Diamond, whose parents had actually spelled it Dimond, not knowing it was wrong. Didn't tell anyone, as it wasn't her fault, but damned if that isn't hilarious
Wanna know what would've been a real asshole move, though? Spreading it around school so she could be made fun of, something neither of us did. Yeah, I'm doing it on the internet, cause it's the fucking internet, no one knows who I'm talking about. I'm a dick sure, but at least I'm not an asdhole
Okay. Im sorry I called you an asshole. But look how many people have a similar story to your "dimond" story.
I've heard some variation of this story dozens of times. Usually, it's from some boring asshole that gets off on pointing out how dumb everyone else is...
It just bugs me. I shouldn't be an asshole about it, tho. So I'm sorry for that.
No harm done, it's mature of you to apologize. I actually forgot about the story until I saw the post, but I most definitely won't deny being an asshole
Aren't most of us boring dicks when we're young? I'm trying to improve myself, life isn't especially boring, but I'm most definitely still a dick. But I'm 18, fuck off, most people are dicks at 18

As a German: tell me some of the strange German names. I don't know any tbh except if their parents have what's called "Kevinism" where they have to name their child something special(or something that sounds like a stripper name). The source is Psychology Today so I'm not sure how well that is in terms of producing good material. But I've come across this assertion before, and that the root of so many different types of spellings for names within the black community is remnants of their ancestors trying to disassociate themselves from any slave owner.
Slaves were given Anglicized names and surnames of their owners. So once slavery was abolished and they were granted rights they started misspelling names on purpose to ensure it would never have been used by a slave owner. Taken in that context I understand. Jokes about "Lafonda" are not nearly as funny anymore considering the history. Granted, slavery is illegal but I don't discount the cultural and historical aspect for the reason.

What's it called when you take every opportunity to criticize people to feel superior about yourself and signal your virtue to others?
As somebody that has a name that can be spelled different ways, I hate people who spell it incorrectly. I also hate the people who have my name spelled incorrectly too.
My aunt goes by a shortened version because there are at least 4 normal ways of spelling her name, and another dozen weird ways.
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 03:17:35 on July 22, 2017 · (Permalink)
I'm the opposite. My name can be spelled at least 3 different ways and when somebody gets it wrong I just go with it. When they assume it's short for something though... then I make a stink.
On the bright side, I've been told that my name (first and last) sounds like a celebrity name. :)
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 03:47:09 on July 22, 2017 · (Permalink)
I'm the only person with my name spelled as it is that I know of. I only get aggravated when I repeatedly tell people how to say it and they refuse to even try to remember. I'm not talking about stangers or acquaintances, but colleagues. It's really not awkward or weird. If you can pronounce the name "Lisa" you can say my name. Don't bastardize my name, I'd prefer a nickname over hearing extra letters added to my name or constant mispronounciations.
Funny enough, most non-U.S. people I've interacted with have been able to say it the first time without me telling them.
Oh, it's become quite crazy (to say the least) recently...
The left is on a roll these days when it comes to labeling everything that is (supposedly) “white” as racist. Just last week here in L.A., a prominent bicycle-rights advocate who was running for city council crashed and burned (metaphorically) when the left declared bike lanes to be racist. And not just bike lanes, but also the enforcement of safe driving laws that protect cyclists. In other words, the two things that bicycle activists hold dearest—bike lanes and safe driving awareness—are now racist. The arguments? Safe driving enforcement will lead to “racial profiling,” because apparently nonwhites are such shit drivers that any attempt to keep bikers safe will by necessity lead to drivers of color being locked up (at least that’s the reason suggested by L.A.’s favorite Stalinist weekly). And bike lanes? Why are they racist? Simple, stupid. Bike lanes lead to white people entering black communities in a manner in which blacks are forced to see them. No, I’m not kidding. That’s the new big thing out here. Blacks don’t want to see whites in their neighborhoods, showing off their ofay devil skin and scaring the chillun. No joke. Two months ago, a black entertainment-industry insurer who lives in Leimert Park, a traditionally black L.A. neighborhood, organized a Saturday-morning jogging club made up of his friends and colleagues, most of whom are white. The fact that a bunch of white devils thought they could jog through a black neighborhood set off such a massive firestorm of protest, it became Metro section front-page news in the L.A. Times.
The Times also covered the controversy surrounding an “incident” in which a photo appeared online showing (as described by the Times) “four white women piled in a car, presumably going to or coming from the mall” at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. Yes, that was the story. Four white women “piled” in a car (don’t most vehicles hold four comfortably?) were seen either coming from or going to a mall in a black part of town. That was the entire story. A separate Times piece explained how dog walking is a menace in black communities, because it’s a “white” thing. Remember when a bunch of black celebrities defended NFL dog-torturer Michael Vick by claiming that the concept of being kind to dogs is a “white thing”? Well, apparently so is walking them.
So of course bike lanes are racist, because only white people use them. A piece in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette outright stated it: Cyclists are white, so spending city money to create bike lanes to keep them safe is racist.
Jogging, cycling, safe driving, kindness to animals. These have all been deemed “racist” because they’re “white.” Here are a few other recent gems:
Being a “foodie” (appreciating good food and drink) is racist. Worse than that, eating healthy is reallyracist! Yes, health food is the new KKK. And milk is the new Nazi Party. And veganism is so racist, it’s like the KKK and the NSDAP rolled into one. In fact, nutritional guidelines themselves are genocidally racist. So are vitamins. Yes, vitamins. And Celestial Seasonings herbal tea. The Food Pyramid is racist because it’s not specifically tailored to the unique nutritional needs of black people. Vitamins are racist because some of them are specifically tailored to the unique nutritional needs of black people. Because it’s racist to say that black people don’t have unique nutritional needs, and it’s racist to say they do. Keeping up?
Encouraging the use of solar power is racist; we get this straight from the horse’s ass (i.e., Al Sharpton). And the push for marijuana legalization? Racist as shit. And hiking in the woods? Don’t even get me started on that. The wilderness itself is racist, because “escaped slaves” used to be confronted with “forests full of danger.” For people of color, “the wilderness, historically, is dangerous territory,” claims a Tokyo-born half-white/half-Asian wilderness racism “expert” in the L.A. Times. Ironically, her website shows her posing next to a tree. Kudos to the tree for restraining its racism for the sake of the photo.
Have a friend in Finland, her best friend named her kid Jerko. She doesn't speak much english, but we have to constantly resist the urge to make fun of that name choice. We convinced her to not name the next kid Fukko. I wish i was joking.
It's like the Everything is Awesome song, but racist.
Everything is raciiiiiiist
Everything is raciiiiiiist when you're a social justice warrrrior!
Everything is raciiiiiiist
Everything is raciiiiiiist here on Tumbllllllr!
I wonder what their opinion is on people that absolutely insist on spelling a man's name "Jeff" even after being told repeatedly that the person's name is "Geoff?"
"What's the difference?" Well, one's my name, the other isn't. I don't like "Geoffrey" among friends (too formal) but I'll accept it. "Geo" is also acceptable, since it's still a shortening of my actual name, but "Jeff" is not an option, because my driver's license says not "Jeffrey," nor "Jeffery," nor "Jeff," nor "Jefferson."
Definitely. Probably more linked with literacy than anything else, though I would dispute that their are "correct" ways to spell names. Their is no standard for names, they can be spelled differently. The entire purpose of a name is to differentiate people from one and other, never saw why people got up in arms about spelling.
So we can have another whiney SJW account come in here and call us names, then complain about being attacked when anyone responds, then sending emails to admins and starting a "signal boost" about how terrible this place is, oh btw, my patreon/paypal/need rent because PTSD, etc?
Erm no I saw a white guy yesterday with the name jonothon and that fucking wound me the fuck up. Actually usually it's white people with the stupid names lol.

Okay. Let's say I have two friends. One is named Steven. He reveals to me that I have been spelling his name wrong, and his name is actually Stephen. Am I allowed to be angry?
Stephen isn't a stupid way to spell Steven, though. It's actually the correct way to spell the name; Steven is what it eventually became to match the way it sounds. Not like it's hard to hear of people named Stephen with a PH anyway... We've got people like Stephen Colbert, and historical figures like Saint Stephen. It's pretty common.

I don't understand why black people do this? Give your child a good proper name. Not starzlyn, or shequefa, or badigerzer.
You know though, my brother names his white kids really fucked up names. Everyone of his kids names except for his first have been the names of pets from people I know.
I'm not outing my self telling you guy his kids names. But it's r/wtf worthy.
I've read that it's because with slavery their culture and names were stolen from them and so the "ghetto" names are part of the creation of a new African-American culture separate from that of white Americans. I mean I kind of get it, what with most of them not being able to trace their heritage to a specific African culture and so they just tend to invent names, but in any country/race where there are people who are not descended from recent immigrants and are made up of a mixture of nationalities, name inventing does tend to happen, hence the ridiculous names you see on white kids - Braelynn, Jaxton etc.
I mean, my kids are going to be mixed when I have them and I plan to give them names that are unconventional but not TOO out there, but they won't be a random mishmash of syllables like some of the names mentioned in this thread.
I actually legitimately had this Convo with a couple people a year ago. Despite bringing up my own name being misspelled and mispronounced they told me my name was too common and I was racist.
Maybe don't name your kids stupid shit like Lala or laquesha which have no basis in culture (look it up. The latter is a bastardization and American made).
It's not classist or racist if you just plain make a stupid name BUT giving your kid one of these names does open them up to people denying them jobs during the application process just based on their names. Self sabotage

Oh god, and Eoin too.

Random-Rambling · 418 points · Posted at 20:53:19 on July 21, 2017 · (Permalink)
Neil Gaiman himself got sick of people mispronouncing his friend Eoin Colfer's name and had this to say.
LyreBirb · 200 points · Posted at 22:15:22 on July 21, 2017 · (Permalink)
I cant stop laughing. Imagining him getting pissed off at an actual grand prix. He just starts yelling "OWEN!" every time a car passes while Eion Colfer is just shaking his head like 'dude it's ok.'

I'd like to think he has some hearing loss only hears certain parts of a car going past's tone and it sounds like all cars are saying "Owen" to him. And that Eion's name is really pronounced Eeeeeooooiiiiiin.

Hi fellow Irish person. I've always enjoyed asking people to pronounce names like Caoimhe (danmit I probably misspelled it already) or Saoirse.
(For non Irish people they're pronounced Kee-vah and Seer-sha)

If that's how she pronounced Caoimhe then she was actually pronouncing her own name wrong. It's a super common name with only two accepted pronunciations, the "e" at the end can't be a long "eeee" sound in Irish

And theres much worse than that if you go back a few hundred years or read any of our mythology.
Edit - to make matters worse, we have three or four different dialects, so your name gets pronounced different depending on which part of Ireland you're from. So in a way you're always right, but always wrong
Edit 2 - and we only use a 19 letter alphabet so we got pretty creative.

StopJack · 83 points · Posted at 20:03:32 on July 21, 2017 · (Permalink)
I agree with this. There was a thread somewhere on reddit that had to do with cops and interacting with people with different, unusual, or odd names. There were a few doozies but I couldn't help but cringe with kids named after liquors or weed. Names like Hennessy or Kush.

Kingdom of Kush

If you want to be creative with your kids name, do it. With their middle name. If the kid hates it, they can just use the initial. Strider would be great middle name.

As the patriarchy cried she drank their tears and painted a picture of the carnage with the breast milk of a Cambodian womxn.

Also seriously if you're dumb enough to give someone a name spelled like "Shequarandurhuh" and then pronounce it "Steven", sorry, but you're a fucking idiot.
regeya · 5 points · Posted at 01:24:10 on July 22, 2017 · (Permalink)

I guess I'm racist and classist then. A couple years ago, I was close with my English teacher (role model, cool guy, same interests) and we would frequently exchange gossip, and we had a good long laugh when he told me about a girl in my class named Diamond, whose parents had actually spelled it Dimond, not knowing it was wrong. Didn't tell anyone, as it wasn't her fault, but damned if that isn't hilarious
octobertwins · -6 points · Posted at 08:55:22 on July 22, 2017 · (Permalink)
Okay, now think of how many times he's retold that story to anyone that would listen to it.
Over and over, he tells everyone how stupid those parents were. And you all laugh and agree!
And I'll bet everyone says the exact same thing in response.
"Yes! They are stupid! They misspelled the name! Haha haha! How did you not spellcheck your kids name?! Why didn't anyone tell them at the hospital?!"
What's your teacher getting out of that, exactly? What are you getting out of retelling it?
