You're actually right. It was a different concept of tennis that had an arc effect on the ball, with a sort of net as well. Pong didn't have that, they're not the same game exactly.
There was a good Adam Ruins Everything youtube video on why video games became associated with boys. It was simply due to financial problems and early video games were gender-neutral and with numerous female developers.

A simple upvote wasn't enough for this thought, I want to thank you in a texty format. Comparing Spec Ops the Line and Clash Royale in my head is interesting. They're both good, but in their own ways.
I thought about it, but in my eyes mobile games aren't just simplified, shallow (both mechanically and from the storytelling perspective) AAA titles, they're in totally different area.
I've been playing all my life, I've sunk countless hours in hundreds of titles, some of them of pretty bad quality. But I literally cannot stand mobile gaming (at least the games I've came across) - it's shallow, repetitive and brings me no enjoyment whatsoever.
I've played Dungeon Siege 3, and enjoyed it for some bizarre reason (the game is shit), but it's nowhere near the likes of Planescape: Torment or Witcher 3; the same way cheap romance novels and Forgotten Realms books are nowhere near the likes of The Clockwork Orange or The Master and Margarita. But I won't even consider equating Dritzz Saga to a fashion magazine 'cause that's just weird, and likewise, I won't compare Angry Birds to Dungeon Siege 3. Even "RPG" mobile games I've came across are so terribly bland and uninspired that I can't honestly stack them side by side with fucking Dungeon Siege 3, which, again, was horrible.
That's why I feel mobile gaming is an entirely different beast and more akin to magazines, especially kinds that talk about show business and shit - quickly done, with little to no effort, with little to no substance; it's cheap and dumb. There are of course exceptions, I'm sure of it, like many magazines are very much worthwhile, but for every Scientific American you get how many tabloids (or monthly equivalent of tabloids)? Likely, I'm inclined to believe that there are genuinely good mobile games that are actually more worthwhile than some terrible AAA titles, but how many can there be among terrible shitty ones?
I can admit that many mobile games have more in common with triple A gaming than magazine have in common with books, but for the reasons I've mentioned above, I stand by my original analogy.
That sounds more like a pulp fiction then a magazine to me. Pulp fiction rose because the market was saturated, like with mobile phones games. It used to be that everyone was an author, now everyone is making an app.
Mobile phones do get you invested, and many of the more popular ones have quite the depth, if not story wise mechanically wise.
Now against my point, phone games are mostly free shit you find and use mainly to pass time, like a magazine.
On a different note, a game called guild of thieves I used to play had a pretty high skill ceiling, but the developers removed some of the more difficult mechanisms to make it more noob friendly, so I totally see where you are coming from.
I myself play either puzzle games or hearthstone on my phone.
Give kiritika a try, it might have enough of a hardcore feel for you.

That doesn't make the Angry Birds movie's total gross of $314.7 million smaller though. It doesn't mean Zynga's market crash and subsequent firing of thousands any less of a deal for investors. If anything having 1,000s of games only works to mobiles favor. People see the success of the big boys and want to emulate that. All the more chance of one hitting it big when you have 1000s of options.
If you really want to compare succesors to the flops, there is plenty even within the gaming community. Plenty of triple A titles fall flat on their face straight out of the gate and fail to make an impression; even within the already highly-specialized community.
In fact, I propose that even within the gaming community it is indie, not triple A titles that have the most reoccuring impacts today. Sure big titles like Overwatch, Doom, and Witcher 3 are big successful hits that will have an impact on the gaming industry. But look at the popular new releases/top sellers on steam and you'll see it flooded with Stardew Valley, Ark, and Day Z. Minecraft also originally comes from this genre.

Even triple a "flops" tend to make millions. Phone and mobile flops make negative returns and typically for people who don't have the funds or fallback to be taking these hits.
I've done financing for these people who are typically also working jobs while developing the games and such. To be honest most of these people would be much better off just going full time in their current jobs and giving up on the App Store dream.

Even then I'd say World of Warcraft has had a more cultural impact and Starcraft than any mobile game could ever hope too. Even CoD and Halo. Mario? Sonic? Forget it. Huge huge huge cultural impacts.
Donkey Kong? Legend of Zelda? Toys galore, tv shows, games, movies.
All triple A titles. other than Angry birds I can't really think of a mobile game that has had or shared anywhere near the same success despite there being thousands upon thousands of them (potentially over a million I'm not sure how many there are across all the platforms)
A lot of the information in that episode was new to me, so I enjoyed the history lesson. But yeah that kid was very fake and negative, and took away from the learning.

I don't understand why, if a male character is attractive, it's a male power fantasy, and if a female character is attractive, it's a male sexual fantasy. Are women just immune to any sort of fantasizing with the characters in their games?
They don't consider male characters to be sexualized (possibly they don't consider male characters to be sexualizable) so to them male characters are judged only how badass they are which means females characters should only be judged on how badass they are.
And if someone (male) finds the character attractive, it is sexualized and not good enough. Which is a problem since there will always be someone who finds it attractive (probably a group even).

Agreed! Even with Overwatch I'm excited to play more just to get loot boxes so I can put them all in new outfits. Yea. I don't mind the skimpy clothes, regardless of the characters' gender, so long as it's a choice and not a mandatory thing. It also ruins some of my ability to believe certain events of the game. If a character is in a fight I expect them to get hurt, because they're not wearing enough clothing/armor to make it unlikely.

Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia.

I thought about it, but in my eyes mobile games aren't just simplified, shallow (both mechanically and from the storytelling perspective) AAA titles, they're in totally different area.
I've been playing all my life, I've sunk countless hours in hundreds of titles, some of them of pretty bad quality. But I literally cannot stand mobile gaming (at least the games I've came across) - it's shallow, repetitive and brings me no enjoyment whatsoever.
I've played Dungeon Siege 3, and enjoyed it for some bizarre reason (the game is shit), but it's nowhere near the likes of Planescape: Torment or Witcher 3; the same way cheap romance novels and Forgotten Realms books are nowhere near the likes of The Clockwork Orange or The Master and Margarita. But I won't even consider equating Dritzz Saga to a fashion magazine 'cause that's just weird, and likewise, I won't compare Angry Birds to Dungeon Siege 3. Even "RPG" mobile games I've came across are so terribly bland and uninspired that I can't honestly stack them side by side with fucking Dungeon Siege 3, which, again, was horrible.
That's why I feel mobile gaming is an entirely different beast and more akin to magazines, especially kinds that talk about show business and shit - quickly done, with little to no effort, with little to no substance; it's cheap and dumb. There are of course exceptions, I'm sure of it, like many magazines are very much worthwhile, but for every Scientific American you get how many tabloids (or monthly equivalent of tabloids)? Likely, I'm inclined to believe that there are genuinely good mobile games that are actually more worthwhile than some terrible AAA titles, but how many can there be among terrible shitty ones?
I can admit that many mobile games have more in common with triple A gaming than magazine have in common with books, but for the reasons I've mentioned above, I stand by my original analogy.

That sounds more like a pulp fiction then a magazine to me. Pulp fiction rose because the market was saturated, like with mobile phones games. It used to be that everyone was an author, now everyone is making an app.
Mobile phones do get you invested, and many of the more popular ones have quite the depth, if not story wise mechanically wise.
Now against my point, phone games are mostly free shit you find and use mainly to pass time, like a magazine.
On a different note, a game called guild of thieves I used to play had a pretty high skill ceiling, but the developers removed some of the more difficult mechanisms to make it more noob friendly, so I totally see where you are coming from.
I myself play either puzzle games or hearthstone on my phone.
Give kiritika a try, it might have enough of a hardcore feel for you.

That doesn't make the Angry Birds movie's total gross of $314.7 million smaller though. It doesn't mean Zynga's market crash and subsequent firing of thousands any less of a deal for investors. If anything having 1,000s of games only works to mobiles favor. People see the success of the big boys and want to emulate that. All the more chance of one hitting it big when you have 1000s of options.
If you really want to compare succesors to the flops, there is plenty even within the gaming community. Plenty of triple A titles fall flat on their face straight out of the gate and fail to make an impression; even within the already highly-specialized community.
In fact, I propose that even within the gaming community it is indie, not triple A titles that have the most reoccuring impacts today. Sure big titles like Overwatch, Doom, and Witcher 3 are big successful hits that will have an impact on the gaming industry. But look at the popular new releases/top sellers on steam and you'll see it flooded with Stardew Valley, Ark, and Day Z. Minecraft also originally comes from this genre.

Even triple a "flops" tend to make millions. Phone and mobile flops make negative returns and typically for people who don't have the funds or fallback to be taking these hits.
I've done financing for these people who are typically also working jobs while developing the games and such. To be honest most of these people would be much better off just going full time in their current jobs and giving up on the App Store dream.

Even then I'd say World of Warcraft has had a more cultural impact and Starcraft than any mobile game could ever hope too. Even CoD and Halo. Mario? Sonic? Forget it. Huge huge huge cultural impacts. Donkey Kong? Legend of Zelda? Toys galore, tv shows, games, movies.
All triple A titles. other than Angry birds I can't really think of a mobile game that has had or shared anywhere near the same success despite there being thousands upon thousands of them (potentially over a million I'm not sure how many there are across all the platforms)

They don't consider male characters to be sexualized (possibly they don't consider male characters to be sexualizable) so to them male characters are judged only how badass they are which means females characters should only be judged on how badass they are.
And if someone (male) finds the character attractive, it is sexualized and not good enough. Which is a problem since there will always be someone who finds it attractive (probably a group even).

Honestly who even cares why something is invented (Not saying this is remotely accurate, just everyone else got the history lessons down here already). Graham crackers were created to stop masturbation. That doesn't stop people who masturbate from enjoying them though.
I'm cisgendered female and honestly the only thing i want is more options to not sexualize the female character (ex: If I can play as a female, let me put clothes on her. I don't care if someone wants to play with her half naked or even fully naked, just give more options for not skimpy clothes. Agreed! Even with Overwatch I'm excited to play more just to get loot boxes so I can put them all in new outfits. If a character is in a fight I expect them to get hurt, because they're not wearing enough clothing/armor to make it unlikely.

SJW are attacking gaming, not because of legitimate grievances of any kind, but because they're trying to destroy everything that men in our generation enjoy. Men constitute the majority of gamers, and because of this games tend to cater to men and masculinity. Mostly it's just a fun thing to do, but for some male gamers it could be a way for them to experience something that appeals to their need to be men, in a society where acting like a man demonized.

The most popular video games of all time are as follows: Tetris, Minecraft, Mario, World of Warcraft, Wii Sports, Angry Birds, and Grand Theft Auto, and out of that list only GTA is known for it's violence.
Just off the top of my head: Samus from Metroid, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil, Chell from Portal, Aeris from FF7, Prince of Persia from...Prince of Persia, Quina from FF9, Bridget from Guilty Gear, and that's all I'm willing to list without having to do a google search. Not to mention the countless games out there where you DESIGN YOUR OWN CHARACTER, for crying out loud.
