You can also theoretically get no higher than a 5. Rolling stats is a Gygaxian artifact that makes for an unbalanced game. The power disparity between players that roll stats makes for unhappy players. The system is balanced around point buy.
These are results in theory, though. The chance of getting a 3 or 18 is 1/216, and unless your dm is a cunt he's not going to force you to keep a character who is entirely unfit for adventuring. Clerics/Druids/Wizards in 3.5 are far more broken than stat rolling is. Besides which, balance is not a primary concern for all players. Some people are more invested in the playing a role aspect than the numbers game, and vice versa.

But your are going to get unbalanced play due to RNG in the game itself.
That guy who uses a fair die but never gets above a 10 when it matters is just as screwed as the guy with a 5 in every stat; he just doesn't have a sheet of paper with low numbers on it showing it.
Of course, different groups have different appetites for randomness, but to some really enjoy having a party where you have that guy who is randomly dumb as dirt, blind as a bat, or unable to carry either a conversation or a bag but still is a hero.
The big issue with point buy is that it denies those super lows and those super highs in attribute, even though rolling a d20 (as opposed to 3d6) brings about the greater level of random outcome.

Hammer him with AoE and environmental hazards. If his CON is weak, lots of low-damage attacks, if he dumps wisdom or charisma, hammer saves on that attribute (mind-affecting stuff). Make heavy use of ambushes and surprise attacks; hit him when he can't use the dex bonus.
In my experience it's far more common with point buy. When you decide the stats you can always guarantee your primary gets an 18 for the measly cost of a -1 mod in whatever your dump stat is. It's not like any class (besides Paladin, because fuck paladins amirite?) needs all of their stats at a decent level to be effective.
What the fuck class could they possibly be playing that 20 dex breaks the game? It's not like we're talking about a Wizard who is keeping up fly and invisibility while chucking SoS spells and deleting chunks of reality. If it's really such a big deal mix in some encounters that they really don't want to get involved in so there's an element of choosiness rather than just letting the ranger or whatever-the-fuck chunky salsa their way through everything. Alternatively, start statting up some leader type enemies with pc levels of their own, beat the min-maxer at their own game, you'll always win.

You kidding? 18 con with a roll based stat set is just sad at lvl 1, much less 5. You have to actively build away from making sense to get below 18 even on a point buy, unless you aim into STR as a main stat. This could work, but gg low HP you're down, no re. Unless jes going for a heavy hitter build, in which case why is his con so high? Secondary stats should be 16ish at most so you don't waste points and end up playing 2-int the fighter.
Of course I'm kidding. You don't brag unless you're at least past level 20. What do you think I am, a n00b?

At level one you can have any stat at up to 18, and with a bonus from your chosen race (species) it can reach 20. Thus unless playing a small creature, or a weak one, getting to 20 at level 1 isn't hard. These stats don't go up much naturally, so at level 20 (aka max) having 25 base in a stat is respectable, but magic items can easily add more.

Actually, black African tribes sold the prisoners of war from other tribes into slavery. White people didn't just catch them with giant nets. So I guess it kind of was their fault, too.

That is the working hypothesis, anyway. Plenty of evidence to support this theory, but plenty more than debunks it. The short version is that the OOA theory was pushed for PC purposes. That doesn't make it wrong, but 'walking on eggshells' doesn't even begin to describe navigating through anthro.
It would be nice if we could just present evidence as it emerges, instead of injecting bias into conclusions before they are even reached. And it would be nice if we could all agree that regardless of our origins, everyone deserves equal protection and treatment regardless of their skin color.

I'll start by saying that I was only referring to the layman notion that modern humans evolved in Africa, migrated across the globe from there, replaced existing Homo populations over time, and that we're all identical other than skin color and few hodgepodge disorders like sickle-cell anemia. If you search for why OOA is wrong, you get a bunch of bullshit science that is twisted to promote racism. On the other hand, the reason people adhere to OOA so strongly is for the purpose of squashing racism. In my eyes, one is way more nefarious, but both jump to conclusions when we have massive gaps in our knowledge, and so they are equally dishonest.
I guess the short version is that there were multiple "waves" of major migration (that you're obviously familiar with- just going through the motions here), but there were isolated pockets all over the world, constant genetic drift in all areas where human and human-like species existed, and gene flow back into Africa. There are also plenty of examples of reproduction with other species, and basically every major population outside of Africa absorbed parts of that DNA. I have no doubt that Africa plays a huge part in our evolution, and I think it has more substance than the MRE model (*EDIT: The "we all simultaneously evolved from H.erectus" model). I just think the truth is far more complex, and I hate to see inconclusive science get pushed for PC reasons. I think it's absolutely possible to admit that we have independently-evolved major genetic differences between ethnic groups, while treating each other with respect and kindness. We should continue to build on our knowledge, admit our limitations, and stop pushing junk conclusions that anthropologists have to reevaluate every few years when new fossils are uncovered.
As a side note, I also wish I had an extremely fast spacecraft. Now that it is relatively easy to migrate across the globe, it would be cool to see what we look like in a couple thousand years.

It's also pretty likely the first people in the genus Homo were light skinned the way chimps are today under their fur. Genus Homo was white then turned black in adaptation to African sun then reverted to white after leaving.
These early humans probably had pale skin, much like humans' closest living relative, the chimpanzee, which is white under its fur. Around 1.2 million to 1.8 million years ago, early Homo sapiens evolved dark skin.

Not necessarily in the sense of being able to identify a hypothetical single creature which led to homo sapiens. It's entirely possible that a population of ancestors became cut off in some way (geographically, perhaps) and evolved differently, resulting in homo sapiens.
I once read of a valley with a particular creature with a variety of populations as you enter the valley, go around one side, along the back, and down the other side. Each population could procreate with its neighbours, but the population on one side of the entrance couldn't procreate with the population on the other.

Where did you hear good arguments that humans started in Asia? Africans contain no other hominid DNA. White people have trace amounts of Neanderthal DNA. Asians have Neanderthal and another hominids DNA. It clearly shows a migration from Africa to Europe to Asia.
The only other competing theory I've heard was that hominids in all those areas independently evolved into humans while staying the same species by interbreeding occasionally, which besides being really roundabout and unlikely, is directly in opposition to DNA evidence.
I think the post is frankly dumb, but it doesn't mean we should toss science out the window to negate one false definition of this person's shitpost. I'd be interested to hear the out of Asia theory if it's plausible.

I think that the phrase "highly evolved" could refer not necessarily to number of ancestors or location on the evolutionary tree, but also to figurative distance from the origin species. For example, there are some creatures alive today that are very similar to their ancestors that lived 50 million years ago, and there are others that are barely recognizable compared to an ancestor living only 5 million years in the past. I would consider the phrase to mean specialization rather than a literal state of higher evolution. That said, specialization occurs because it's considered more useful or desirable in certain regions than in others, so I don't think the phrase "highly evolved" could rightly be applied to any human race.

Current theories I've read indicate that human life may have evolved independently in Asia and Africa. Asians apparently have different levels of different levels of Neanderthal DNA and may have interbred with them to different extents with African Humans. No idea about the validity of this, though.

If you're talking about Jamaicans, you'll be disappointed to find out that it was founded as a colony and quite a lot of the population descended from slaves that were brought over by either the Spanish who were then freed when the English took it off them. Or, they were brought over in the 200 years between the time the English took over and the abolition of Slavery in 1807.
There were some natives to the island, but one of the tribes has been extinct for centuries and the other is so small in number that you'll be hard pressed to find somebody who's even half-Arawak in Jamaica.

You can also theoretically get no higher than a 5. Rolling stats is a Gygaxian artifact that makes for an unbalanced game. The power disparity between players that roll stats makes for unhappy players. The system is balanced around point buy.

These are results in theory, though. The chance of getting a 3 or 18 is 1/216, and unless your dm is a cunt he's not going to force you to keep a character who is entirely unfit for adventuring. Clerics/Druids/Wizards in 3.5 are far more broken than stat rolling is. Besides which, balance is not a primary concern for all players. Some people are more invested in the playing a role aspect than the numbers game, and vice versa.

But your are going to get unbalanced play due to RNG in the game itself.
That guy who uses a fair die but never gets above a 10 when it matters is just as screwed as the guy with a 5 in every stat; he just doesn't have a sheet of paper with low numbers on it showing it.
Of course, different groups have different appetites for randomness, but to some really enjoy having a party where you have that guy who is randomly dumb as dirt, blind as a bat, or unable to carry either a conversation or a bag but still is a hero.
The big issue with point buy is that it denies those super lows and those super highs in attribute, even though rolling a d20 (as opposed to 3d6) brings about the greater level of random outcome.

Hammer him with AoE and environmental hazards. If his CON is weak, lots of low-damage attacks, if he dumps wisdom or charisma, hammer saves on that attribute (mind-affecting stuff). Make heavy use of ambushes and surprise attacks; hit him when he can't use the dex bonus.

In my experience it's far more common with point buy. When you decide the stats you can always guarantee your primary gets an 18 for the measly cost of a -1 mod in whatever your dump stat is. It's not like any class (besides Paladin, because fuck paladins amirite?) needs all of their stats at a decent level to be effective.

It's not like we're talking about a Wizard who is keeping up fly and invisibility while chucking SoS spells and deleting chunks of reality. If it's really such a big deal mix in some encounters that they really don't want to get involved in so there's an element of choosiness rather than just letting the ranger or whatever-the-fuck chunky salsa their way through everything. Alternatively, start statting up some leader type enemies with pc levels of their own, beat the min-maxer at their own game, you'll always win.

You kidding? 18 con with a roll based stat set is just sad at lvl 1, much less 5. You have to actively build away from making sense to get below 18 even on a point buy, unless you aim into STR as a main stat. This could work, but gg low HP you're down, no re. Unless jes going for a heavy hitter build, in which case why is his con so high? Secondary stats should be 16ish at most so you don't waste points and end up playing 2-int the fighter.

That is the working hypothesis, anyway. Plenty of evidence to support this theory, but plenty more than debunks it. The short version is that the OOA theory was pushed for PC purposes. That doesn't make it wrong, but 'walking on eggshells' doesn't even begin to describe navigating through anthro.

I'll start by saying that I was only referring to the layman notion that modern humans evolved in Africa, migrated across the globe from there, replaced existing Homo populations over time, and that we're all identical other than skin color and few hodgepodge disorders like sickle-cell anemia. If you search for why OOA is wrong, you get a bunch of bullshit science that is twisted to promote racism. On the other hand, the reason people adhere to OOA so strongly is for the purpose of squashing racism. In my eyes, one is way more nefarious, but both jump to conclusions when we have massive gaps in our knowledge, and so they are equally dishonest.
I guess the short version is that there were multiple "waves" of major migration (that you're obviously familiar with- just going through the motions here), but there were isolated pockets all over the world, constant genetic drift in all areas where human and human-like species existed, and gene flow back into Africa. There are also plenty of examples of reproduction with other species, and basically every major population outside of Africa absorbed parts of that DNA. I have no doubt that Africa plays a huge part in our evolution, and I think it has more substance than the MRE model (*EDIT: The "we all simultaneously evolved from H.erectus" model). I just think the truth is far more complex, and I hate to see inconclusive science get pushed for PC reasons. I think it's absolutely possible to admit that we have independently-evolved major genetic differences between ethnic groups, while treating each other with respect and kindness. We should continue to build on our knowledge, admit our limitations, and stop pushing junk conclusions that anthropologists have to reevaluate every few years when new fossils are uncovered.
As a side note, I also wish I had an extremely fast spacecraft. Now that it is relatively easy to migrate across the globe, it would be cool to see what we look like in a couple thousand years.

Not necessarily in the sense of being able to identify a hypothetical single creature which led to homo sapiens. It's entirely possible that a population of ancestors became cut off in some way (geographically, perhaps) and evolved differently, resulting in homo sapiens.
I once read of a valley with a particular creature with a variety of populations as you enter the valley, go around one side, along the back, and down the other side. Each population could procreate with its neighbours, but the population on one side of the entrance couldn't procreate with the population on the other.

Where did you hear good arguments that humans started in Asia? Africans contain no other hominid DNA. White people have trace amounts of Neanderthal DNA. Asians have Neanderthal and another hominids DNA. It clearly shows a migration from Africa to Europe to Asia.
The only other competing theory I've heard was that hominids in all those areas independently evolved into humans while staying the same species by interbreeding occasionally, which besides being really roundabout and unlikely, is directly in opposition to DNA evidence.
I think the post is frankly dumb, but it doesn't mean we should toss science out the window to negate one false definition of this person's shitpost. I'd be interested to hear the out of Asia theory if it's plausible.
Edit: also being more "highly evolved" is a fundamentally ignorant understanding of evolution. Any living creature is equally evolved since we've had an equal amount of time to evolve. An amoeba, an ant, an elephant, a black woman, and a white man are all equally evolved.

I think that the phrase "highly evolved" could refer not necessarily to number of ancestors or location on the evolutionary tree, but also to figurative distance from the origin species. For example, there are some creatures alive today that are very similar to their ancestors that lived 50 million years ago, and there are others that are barely recognizable compared to an ancestor living only 5 million years in the past. I would consider the phrase to mean specialization rather than a literal state of higher evolution. That said, specialization occurs because it's considered more useful or desirable in certain regions than in others, so I don't think the phrase "highly evolved" could rightly be applied to any human race.

You're absolutely right, but I think the phrase is used semi-metaphorically by some people, to indicate a greater difference from the origin species. I don't agree with it, but I think that's what some people are saying. Of course, there is probably also a considerable amount of misunderstanding involved as well. If you're talking about Jamaicans, you'll be disappointed to find out that it was founded as a colony and quite a lot of the population descended from slaves that were brought over by either the Spanish who were then freed when the English took it off them. Or, they were brought over in the 200 years between the time the English took over and the abolition of Slavery in 1807.
There were some natives to the island, but one of the tribes has been extinct for centuries and the other is so small in number that you'll be hard pressed to find somebody who's even half-Arawak in Jamaica.
