Its just a special mathematical ratio nothing more nothing less.

(where you get the next number by adding the previous two), it turns out eventually the ratio of consecutive numbers gets closer and closer to the golden ratio.
The golden ratio is also one "solution" to the polynomial x2 + x - 1 = 0. You're probably thinking "Uhh, so what." Nothing really, but it's just a little weird. I mean all the coefficients are 1. So it's a little "special" I guess. It's not like it's just some random coefficients like 32.7, 12.3, sqrt(2). Just all exactly 1.
The golden ratio is a ratio (i.e. fraction), which has a numberator (a) and a demoninator (b). Turns out that you can show (a+b)/a = a/b.
None of these things in isolation are particularly interesting, but it's just kind of weird when you have this same mysterious number turning up in all kinds of weird places.
All of the "meaning" and reasons its important essentially stem from this. This is only like 3-4 examples, but it just keeps popping up all over the place, so there's something important about it.

The coefficients aren't all one, the coefficients are 1,-1,-1. There are 5 other polynomials with ยฑ1 coefficients. The only reason phi is ever treated as interesting is because you use it to solve the reccurance relation for a Fibonacci sequence, a model that does NOT crop up in nature often at all.
