Thats what i loved about his character- he made fun of the right by being a conservative caricature. Now he makes fun of the right with plain insults...

bl1y ยท 33 points ยท Posted at 21:44:27 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

He was also funny because he mocked Bill O'Reilly's show format, not just the content.

__Titans__ ยท -10 points ยท Posted at 23:06:33 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It really was only funny the first year, it got old fast. He had some good bits, but not worth watching evernight for.

[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 03:06:05 on March 25, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I don't know why everyone is hating on your comment โ€” the first year was the best he had to offer. The satire was on point, the format, graphics, everything was perfect as a mock-O'Reilly show. His faux-conservative dialect was just balanced enough that someone who had never heard of satire would take him seriously. It was the pinnacle of his career as a pseudo-journalist and comedian, and I wish that he had stuck with that balance for the rest of his run.

Instead, he drifted into the territory more associated with today's Jon Oliver โ€” current year bullshit and lazy writing and delivery where he didn't bother to hide his open contempt for the people he was mocking.

Yeah don't get your panties in a bunch just because he makes fun of Trump. He's a comedian, that's his thing. I respect the guy and I'm sure he respects Trump. $100 says if Trump is president he'll end up on Colbert's show eventually.

Muntberg ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 01:03:33 on March 25, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Shippoyasha ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 20:21:47 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I don't agree with this entirely considering Colbert peddles misinformation in a very biased fashion. He keeps peddling the idea that Trump runs on a campaign of hate and he keeps purposely misinterpreting for comedic purposes. Yet he rarely ever goes after liberals with the same misinformation or fervor. I haven't seen him bring up Hillary once these past few months in a serious skit against her. He is extremely biased. Even in the Colbert Report.

sadacal ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 22:21:36 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think Trump just gets more coverage because he purposefully says a lot of stuff that is provocative and entertaining. He gets more coverage on the news because of what he says and also gets lampooned more by comedians. Same deal. You can't say Trump should get a lot of coverage in the media but people aren't allowed to make fun of him.

Trump just gets more news coverage, good and bad.

http://money.cnn.com/2015/12/06/media/donald-trump-nightly-news-coverage/

ButteredPastry ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 20:52:40 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah but its not like he doesn't throw a joke or two to Bernie and Hillary. When Pewdiepie was invited to the show, he had a skit that mentioned Bernie, the crowd cheered and Colbert said something like "this is the same audience that not long ago was cheering for Pewdiepie"

There were scattered laughs in the audience

You are right that Trump is often misinterpreted by the media and very often for comedic purposes but only an idiot would take a joke as a fact.

I slowly stopped watching the Late Show because the humor just feels so watered down. It's like he's trying to appeal to such a larger crowd now, that he has to make the humor bland to avoid offending too many people. I may not have agreed with all his politics on The Colbert Report, but at least he took chances.

Nope just guys like Colbert, Jon Leibowitz, John Oliver, and Bill Maher.

I disagree with George Carlin politically but at least he's funny.

Those guys play the stereotypical smug liberal act to the extreme. It's not funny unless you're already a smug liberal who thinks that those people you disagree with hold the opinions they do because they're misinformed or less intelligent than yourself.

taco_roco ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:34:18 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Oliver is a good example of digging deeper into serious issues from faulty sources.

Even though I lean liberal, I knew something reeked bullshit when John was talking up refugees and how great and peaceful they'd be while spearheading it with that handicap girl; nothing against her but it was clearly a bullshit appeal on our emotions. On the other hand he sheds light on topics like Encryption, Tobacco, FIFA, etc, many of which most people wouldn't give a shit about otherwise.

If this Election cycle has shown us anything, it's that you shouldn't take any single news source at face value, especially if you agree with it.

The point is he used a million dollar loan from his father to build his $10 billion. In the business world that is a small amount. To build an empire like trump has out of the original loan is impressive. He didn't inherit the rest of his fathers $200 million until 1999 after he was already a multi billionaire, and he was running his father's company in those last years anyways.

People that hate trump try to act like he coasted by on daddys money, completely ignoring his 512 businesses, 50,000 employees, and billions of dollars. Colbert is trying to act like the million dollar loan isn't a small amount, which is a lie.

His siblings got similar amounts of money too, but they weren't able to build what he built.

Trump is a good businessman. It's rock fucking stupid to say otherwise.

Roderick111 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 22:34:19 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Liberal thinking is stupid. They worship you If you take your inheritance and donate to gender studies but mock you if you create wealth and dontate a lot more of created wealth while providing jobs, living in high society. Look at Sanders, he really has not done much in his life. He marched in rallies for civil liberties, witch is honorable, but that is really about it. Why is he the God on the progressive left? Is it because he has been a taker the majority of his life? Look at Trump. Sure he grew into money, who the fuck cares, good on his parents. He then took a small amount of wealth, and tur ed himself into a billionaire, while being very Chartable, creating jobs, and being a great businessman all while giving back. Yea he did not write romance novels, or was a creep tenant who lived off of welfare when sounding self entitled to wealth, that is why the Left hates Trump.

Trump gives millions to charity on a regular basis. So, not a big deal.

dado3 ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 21:48:34 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Colbert didn't "goad" Trump into doing it. Trump's event was completely unrelated to Colbert's bit, and it's not his first donation to charity or the first event he's held to benefit a charity. Colbert didn't do anything other than make a poor attempt at humor. It just so happened that the amount was the same.

The picture is of Colbert's prop check - Trump didn't write that. Colbert wanted him to donate it to a children's charity that Colbert chose - which Trump obviously didn't do.

Colbert lost. Like or hate Trump, he put his money where his mouth was and deserves credit for that. On the other hand, Colbert is a multi-millionaire: where's his million dollar check to that children's charity or veterans?

Really? I highly doubt that Trump watches The Late Show - hardly anybody but Colbert's fanboys do. It would be surprising if he even knew about it. I didn't even know about the challenge until this post. So why should he, or anyone else, care what Colbert has to say on this or any other subject? Colbert should concentrate on improving his ratings rather than poorly thought out and badly executed political hit jobs. Maybe then he would register above a flicker on the Nielsens.

Some second-rate celebrity yahoo issues a "challenge" and if you ignore him, you're "backing down?" Your desperation is showing....

Colbert was the one who issued the challenge for Trump to "prove" he would donate $1 million to a charity. Indirectly, Trump did so - even if it wasn't a direct response to Colbert. So Colbert put his foot in his mouth by trying to prove a point which was completely false.

The least he can do is make good on his fake prop check he unsuccessfully tried to embarrass Trump with. But that would take more integrity and honesty than Colbert has ever shown.

And let's be clear: Colbert didn't donate $800K of his own money. He helped raise that much. Lots of celebrities lend their names to charity projects: very few actually donate money themselves. Do they all get credit for "donating" every penny that's raised too, or is this some new standard you've decided to invent for Colbert?

(To use your own words: "It's easy to look up." You should have done that before claiming that Colbert "donated" anything. He didn't.)

By that standard, Trump "donated' $6 million from that veteran's event alone since he raised $5 million from other donors in addition to the $1 million he gave personally.

rowrow_fightthepower ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:00:15 on March 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I highly doubt that Trump watches The Late Show - hardly anybody but Colbert's fanboys do. It would be surprising if he even knew about it

I doubt Trump watched it, he has other things to do, but if you would really be surprised if Trump even knew about this then you must not think much of his campaign. He was mentioned on a network tv show in a negative light. You really think they don't have google alerts setup, people monitoring twitter and fb where it was talked about, i dunno, maybe some staffer somewhere who watched it?

Colbert was the one who issued the challenge for Trump to "prove" he would donate $1 million to a charity.

That is not why he issued the challenge. Trumps been around a long time with plenty of money, I'd be surprised if he has not already donated millions. The whole point of the bit was to make fun of Trump calling $1,000,000 a small amount of money, and to show it by asking him to essentially throw a small amount of money to a charity of his choice. Trump donating to a charity of Trumps choice does not show that its not a large amount of money, it just shows that he wanted to donate to a charity.

It's like if I say $5 is no big deal and some stranger says "oh yeah then why don't you give me $5?" and then 5 months later I give my friend $5. That stranger isn't going to suddenly go oh wow I guess it wasn't a big deal.

dado3 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:12:33 on March 25, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

So you're pretty much making my point:

Colbert didn't "goad" Trump into doing anything. Nor did Trump "back down": Even if we assume that he knew about the challenge, all evidence is that it was never of any importance to him. He never even so much as made a Tweet about the so-called challenge: it was summarily ignored.

Colbert never merited an acknowledgement of his "challenge," let alone deserve any credit for Trump doing something which you admit that Trump has done many, many times over the years - most probably even before Colbert ever made the first TV appearance of his career, let alone began his current hosting gig.

So we've come back to where we started. Except this time, you're making my case for me: Colbert was never set up for a win-win because no one but him ever cared about his silly little "challenge" in the first place, and Trump's donation had not even a passing relationship with Colbert's challenge.

To use your example, if I say $5 is no big deal and you say "oh yeah then why don't you give me $5?," but I completely ignore you. Then 5 months later I give $5 to my friend instead, you aren't suddenly going to say "You only did that because I asked you for $5 5 months ago. Your friend should totally give me credit for that." There isn't a person on the planet who would agree with your statement and would most likely be looking at you like you were crazy for even suggesting that's the case.

And we're still left with Colbert, IMO, still owing those kids the million dollars. I'll even give you dropping a zero and having him write a check for $100K instead since he's not an actual billionaire like Trump. Hell, drop two and make it $10K instead. I don't care. There's a principle involved here.

He used those kids as a prop in an attempt to embarrass Trump, and he utterly failed to do any such thing. Trump didn't have anything do with that: that was Colbert's choice. So he should man up and pay up. As I said before, he's a multi-millionaire. He can afford it. But he won't.

Why? Because he never had any interest in helping those kids in the first place. He always intended to do nothing more than cynically use them as part of his latest cheap shot stunt. And now he hasn't done a damn thing to help them. That's not class. That's pretty much the definition of class-LESS.

Thereโ€™s only one problem: 100% of the money raised on the site goes directly to Donald Trumpโ€™s personal non-profit foundation, according to a disclosure listed at the bottom of the pageโ€ฆ

Trumpโ€™s personal non-profit foundation, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, does not have a history of donating much money to veterans or to veteransโ€™ causes. Didn't say he was. But they used to do follow ups back when he was on Comedy Central for stuff like this.

Colbert was funny for a few minutes a couple times a week. But having to do it every night and he is a joke.

I'll just be extra real here because that's what Daddy does: Colbert was not funny on the Daily Show, and Jimmy Fallon was utter ass on SNL. Sure, later they got good. But maybe they just had good writers.

Gotta give Colbert credit for getting so much money to charity. Way to go Stevie.
