This joke has so many layers of humor. There is the absurdity of not even looking up. There is the fact that this gangster has such a strong and pre-formulated opinion about eclipses. There is the fact that the fate of the people hiding above them hangs in the balance of this comic exchange. I guess there's also that the second guy's opinion is enough to sway the first guy into not looking up. I guess there's also the fact that, of the two kinds of eclipses, the lunar eclipse is the one you would want to look up at.

I guess there's also the fact that, of the two kinds of eclipses, the lunar eclipse is the one you would want to look up at.

In the extremely rare event of a total solar eclipse, you would want to look up during the brief and safe totality period. However it's not safe to look when even a very tiny sliver of the sun is uncovered.

Ucatsuton ยท 107 points ยท Posted at 14:16:36 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Sometimes I glance at the sun on regular days... is there something especially damaging about looking at an eclipse than a regular sun, or is it the same?

Wear eclipse glasses, or take a photo.

Be careful with taking photos, you could damage your camera if you don't use a protective lens like on the eclipse glasses

Someone released a video yesterday of a guy using a telephoto lens pointed at the sun to see what would happen. It melted the shit out of the camera. Of course that's just be cause a telephoto lens focuses so much light into the sensor, but still.

It should be one of the top posts on /r/photography

buttaholic ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:22:04 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Just FYI this is not true; the vast majority of cameras are pretty much safe in terms of shooting the sun. If they weren't, people would be wrecking their cameras every time a lens flare from the sun appeared.

I don't really get how people can be satisfied with this in any way or even call it "watching" or "looking at" an eclipse. It seems like such a colossal waste of a once in a lifetime event that you're just pretending to participate in.

You're looking at a sunbeam on a piece of paper. You aren't looking at an eclipse in any way at all. You may as well just pull down the blinds and look at the shape the shadow casts on the wall. You can do this every day, you don't need to wait for an eclipse. Like even looking at a still photograph of a previous eclipse seems just...vastly superior.

djlemma ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 14:46:35 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Wait. You know how photos are made, right? Cameras?

So why is looking through a pinhole camera, live, during the event, not a valid way to observe? I am thinking you're never actually tried using a pinhole camera to watch a solar eclipse.

Bucklar ยท -10 points ยท Posted at 14:54:20 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)*

Yeah. I do. Do you know how photographs are made beyond the word "camera"?

Because the process behind the image replication that goes into it is a little more complicated than just "light goes onto paper", so you end up looking at more than a sunbeam on a cheerios box. You know, the sky is up there and shit. And the moon. And...the sun. Clouds and all that. Colour.

Comparing either digital or traditional photography to "a piece of light on a brown piece of cardboard" kind of makes it seem like you don't get how photographs work.

Though to be totally clear since you've missed my subtlety - I was using photographs as a mocking comparison. No, looking at photographs is also not a satisfactory solution. That's the point. It's just vastly better.

I am thinking...

Well stop because you're wrong and you don't seem all that well equipped for it. I have indeed looked at an eclipse with a pinhole viewer. Biggest disappointment in my life.

djlemma ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 15:19:56 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Well, apparently you really want to pick fights about how entitled you are to not like things that are cool. I hope you lead a very fulfilling life.

But if you think that a photograph, or any sort of optical solution that safely allows one to look directly at the sun, is going to allow you to see the moon, clouds, or any other object as anything other than a silhouette... you probably shouldn't be trying to lecture others about photography.

I am unsure what viewing setup you intend to use that's going to give you this lovely colorful experience, but for your sake I do hope you aren't planning to just look up at the sun with your naked eyes.

Bucklar ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:35:09 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)*

That was me who picked a fight by condescendiny asking if I even know how photographs are made.

That was me who told me I have never done a thing I have in fact done.

I wasnt the first person who took something personally here, Mr defensive about his cheerios box.

you shouldn't be lecturing people on photography

Did I do that? Mocking you for something you do not understand =/= a lecture.

Though if that's how your college operated it explains some things.

The shit up there I was referring to was in the hypothetical photograph. Lookit all that.

But no you're right - looking into the sky with film over your eyes or at an actual color-perfect replication of the event is exactly the same as looking at shadow puppets cast onto cardboard.

That are cool

Citation needed.

Like even looking at a still photograph of a previous eclipse seems just...vastly superior.

I would argue that the event being once in a lifetime and it being memorable, regardless of how you spend it, it's the "significant" value you're looking for. The key. The aspect that makes it different from just a shadow.

A strand of hair is just a strand of hair but if it's giving to you by the love of your life, it's a lot more significant. It's significant because of the context. Not because of your sensory organs detecting content. We're not all robots.

Bucklar ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:59:58 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

betsyforhope ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:05:07 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Well that's a legit argument. With a little more effort you can make more out of it, I agree.

You can't even see through the special solar eclipse glasses. The only thing you could probably see with them is the sun.

Ganrokh ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 14:31:36 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You can buy special eclipse glasses. However, they've been on sale for a couple months and they're really hard to get now. They're sold out everywhere here (Missouri) and every time a store announces that they got some, they don't last long. Some are showing up on eBay for $50+.

If you have a smartphone, you can turn on your camera and view it that way (with the camera between your face and the sun so you're not looking at it directly. However, there was a thread on r/Android (might have been r/googlepixel) where someone mentioned that this is bad for phones with big cameras since they allow in more light and could melt the camera components, but I don't know how true that is.

I also heard of some method where you can make a cup with your hands and then you can view the shadow of it in your hands, but I have no idea how that works exactly.

ElectroBoof ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 14:49:24 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You can take a picture just fine, people take pictures of the sun all the time. Only thing with a phone, is that you're hardly going to be able to see anything.

A DSLR with a zoom lens would probably work better but has more inherent risk due to a much larger lens and sensor.

As long as you're just snapping a pic, not taking a video or long exposure, there is little to no risk either way.
And with a proper filter, you can do anything you want.

Ganrokh ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:59:18 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't plan on taking a pic anyways (r/astronomy has the covered) but I didn't know enough to confirm/deny possible damage to a camera.

When only a sliver of the sun is visible, you may perceive this as being "safer" or "less bright". But actually its still burning a blind spot onto your retina with the exact same intensity.

The only difference is that your blind spot will be sliver-shaped instead of circle-shaped.

No, but this is a common misconception about celestial motion.

When the moon gets dark during the lunar cycle, it's not because of an eclipse, it's because of what part of the moon is getting illuminated by the sun; the dark part of the moon during the lunar cycle is not the Earth's shadow; it's the part that isn't getting sunlight.

A lunar eclipse occurs only when the sun, Earth, and moon form a straight line, with the Earth in the middle. This is when the shadow of the Earth falls on the moon, and the moon can turn into a "blood moon" because of scattering of blue light.

I could never remember which one was honeydew and which one was cantaloupe, until this. I like honeydew over cantaloupe so if I like it I know it is honeydew as it is the money melon.

venom8599 ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 14:42:04 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)*

Honeydew is a pale greenish white to yellow-green and smooth on the outside with green flesh.

Cantaloupe is more complicated. True cantaloupe is more common in Europe and is green to brown typically with green ribs on the outside and not a netted texture, with orange flesh. Cantaloupe in the US is actually muskmelon, which has a brownish netted textured exterior and orange flesh.

Joliet_Jake_Blues ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:21:22 on August 20, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Muskmelon is different. My grocery store sells both.

Muskmelon is bigger, paler, and not as sweet.

venom8599 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 01:46:24 on August 21, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Technically speaking they're all different cultivars of the same species -- called the muskmelon. The American cantaloupe doesn't really have another name, but it isn't the original cantaloupe.

A lunar eclipse? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within our headquarters!

I remember watching this episode about 10+ years ago. It's what made me look up solar and lunar eclipses and got me interested in seeing one. Now, I'm living right in the heart of the path of the solar eclipse tomorrow and I can't wait.

I've been thinking about this scene for like a month now. I'm so mad that it's a solar eclipse, so I can't really make this joke as a reference.
