I saw a post on Facebook I think about someone who insisted that the moon and the sun was the same thing. Sun during the day and moon at night because they’d never seen the moon during the day time.

I saw the moon this morning about 8am, and it was in the west sky and the sun was in the east.

Just when you think you’ve found the bottom of the idiot hole, someone decides to start digging.

Hubsimaus · 11 points · Posted at 05:28:57 on April 29, 2019 · (Permalink)

I've seen the moon during daytime so often I can't tell how much.

Some day a friend wondered why she could see the moon even tho it was a clear (and cloudless) day... 😐

SmallCubes · 337 points · Posted at 12:55:32 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

This is really stupid on all parties involved. I don’t think that image is correct. The earth would have a gradient of day to night which this doesn’t have. However all the dumbasses in the comments are still stupid.

K00lKat67 · 204 points · Posted at 13:10:20 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

I think the dude was just showing an overlapped image of what half day and half night would. Look like next to each other

SmallCubes · 59 points · Posted at 13:16:30 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

That makes sense

The_True_Black_Jesus · 16 points · Posted at 16:57:17 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

I was thinking it was part of an eclipse picture of the earth

rodleysatisfying · 41 points · Posted at 19:33:21 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

I think the gradient might just be obscured by the scale. You can see some gradient in the image, and that gradient would cover hundreds of miles.

joker38 · 4 points · Posted at 01:53:45 on April 23, 2019 · (Permalink)

So, the next factor we need to know to assess whether the gradient should be wider is the speed of movement.

Does the moon have a gradient?

It does look like a fake image, but not for the lack of gradient.

SmallCubes · 14 points · Posted at 20:49:46 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

Yes, it has a gradient and then a sharp shadow, but there is a gradient. here

J03-K1NG · 3 points · Posted at 15:32:22 on April 30, 2019 · (Permalink)

Alright so I in no way am trying to insult your intelligence or any of the people commenting to you, but I gotta say that the moon in no way affects night time, night is caused by the Earth facing away from the sun, and yes there's a gradiant in that situation but it's not super noticable from space.

-poop-in-the-soup- · 3 points · Posted at 16:11:37 on April 30, 2019 · (Permalink)

I meant when you look at the moon being partially illuminated, you don’t really see a gradient. I didn’t mean to imply that the moon was casting a shadow.

J03-K1NG · 2 points · Posted at 16:30:17 on April 30, 2019 · (Permalink)

Oh I see, in that case also yes, if you look through a telescope you can see it.

-poop-in-the-soup- · 1 points · Posted at 16:33:36 on April 30, 2019 · (Permalink)

Yeah, it was a bad spot for me to be pedantic.

aurumtt · 1 points · Posted at 01:10:46 on April 25, 2019 · (Permalink)

It's indeed not the narrow gradient that make this look fake, but the absence of clouds do.

-poop-in-the-soup- · 1 points · Posted at 01:44:49 on April 25, 2019 · (Permalink)

Shneancy · 3 points · Posted at 23:13:44 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

there is no gradient. After the sun goes beneath the horizon you have like 15 minutes of light left.

SmallCubes · 4 points · Posted at 23:47:39 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

it gets darker before the sun drops below the horizon though.

Shneancy · 0 points · Posted at 23:04:31 on April 23, 2019 · (Permalink)

yeah, and then in about 15 minutes the night falls. I don't consider longer shadows a change in the amount of light

I fear for humanity, it's a deep palpable fear that shivers me to my very core. A fear that renders my soul nearly hopeless and my spirit nearly broken. The last vestiges of hope that I feverishly cling to is that by their own hands and their own shortcomings they render themselves rare and endangered and alas become extinct due to their unwillingness or inability to think and/or act above a kindergarten level.

AmidFuror · 13 points · Posted at 13:51:56 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

And can you "live" at the transition of day and night, or is it just something that occurs almost everywhere on Earth twice daily?

dahuoshan · 9 points · Posted at 17:27:22 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

Additionally, even if this was a real thing "wow does anyone live on that border" yes, people do in fact like in France, Spain, Benelux etc.

AmidFuror · 3 points · Posted at 17:33:55 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

Assuming the frame of mind of the people asking this question, why aren't they more curious about the people who choose to live on the dark side of the line. Is it always cold there? Do they import all of their crops?

Ferenc9 · 1 points · Posted at 18:47:50 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

Yup. The earth has 23.5° axial tilt. Because of this, the night/day time depends on your latitude.

AmidFuror · 1 points · Posted at 19:18:16 on April 22, 2019 · (Permalink)

Yep, that was part of my "almost everywhere" caveat about day / night changes upthread. Suffice it to say that we don't have populations as large as the chunk of Europe shown living above the Arctic Circle.

On facebook (i’m pretty sure that’s where this screenshot is from, but i could be wrong), they don’t let the words go on top of the comment details (when it was posted, etc) like the first comment on the top left corner.
