I really hate how some characters are portrayed in Smash compared to their actual games.

So I decided to take a break from Smash Ultimate a bit, and go back to play some Mario 3-D All-Stars, and had a ton of fun playing me some good ol' Mario! But then I realized in something (which doesn't come as a surprise at this point), that Mario in Smash feels and acts nothing like he does compared to his games. We all know that Mario in his games is known for being kind, cheerful, playful, courageous, and headstrong and is also eager and cocky in certain occasions. But in Smash, Mario is just portrayed as always pissed off, angry, and serious all the time. And no, don't get me that "But it's a fighting game" junk, as some characters like Kirby, Yoshi, and Squirtle, just to name a few, is usually always upbeat and cheerful all the time, and knows when to get mad.

And it's not just Mario, too. There are plenty of characters in this game that feels and acts nothing like they do compared to their actuals game appearance. Here are some good examples:

Donkey in his games: Very goofy and carefree, while also being very confident and loves to show off. Has his own voice, too.

Donkey Kong in Smash: Gorilla. No, that's it, he's just a gorilla. Makes realistic gorilla grunts.

Luigi in his games: Timid and clever, while also being clumsy, shy and nervous.

Luigi in Smash: A complete weirdo who planks a lot. There are some signs of shyness, but it's hard to tell.

Bowser in his games: A brute badass, but can sometimes be cocky and brash, almost a total goofball in some occasions. Has his own voice, too.

Bowser in Smash: An emotionless, bloodthirsty Godzilla-wanabee. Makes godzilla-like noises.

Sonic in his games: A cool blue dude with a lot of attitude! He's very quick-witted and easygoing and dislikes being slow and is very impatient.

Sonic in Smash: Very emotionless, and lacks the edge and cockiness that he was known for.

Wario in his games: Very self-righteous, macho, money-hungry, and greedy.

Wario in Smash: A smelly, gassy, garlic-eating fatass. Also a complete weirdo, like Luigi is in Smash.

These are just a few great examples of characters who are portrayed poorly from their games to Smash. I might be missing a few characters I haven't mentioned, but if you do, ya can let me know in the comments. (I do believe that each Fire Emblem character [apart from Corrin] have their own distinct personalities, but are all portrayed as the same character personality-wise in Smash Bros.)

I want the characters to actually feel and act like that character, not the way Sakurai vison them.

Ganon in his original games: Great King Of Evil, Demon King, Hatred and Malice Incarnate, Prince of Darkness, (insert other ganon titles here)

Ganon in smash: A clone of a Uber driver without their car.

They did the King of Evil dirty, big time!

No magic? No Trident? No Floating? No teleportation? NO DEAD MANโ€™S VOLLEY?!

Why Sakurai, WHY?!

Really hate how some lazy decisions from the developpers to get in more characters in early games result in them being terribly represented in later installments, especially for such an iconic character

DKโ€™s eyes bug out a lot, and have you seen that down taunt, or any of his other animations? I have no idea where youโ€™re coming from with him. Heโ€™s one of the most expressive characters in the game

Penguino13 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:27:12 on May 22, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Can't forget that DK has by far the best spot dodge animation in the game

Sure, but he's still a generic ape compared to him in his games

Sonic's personality since Brawl is gone. If they can DK more expressive why not Sonic?

I'm a bit late on the reply, but this is definitely one of my biggest problems with the game. What's the point of having so many different characters when a lot of them don't even remotely resemble the way they are in their own respective games?

I know someone else already brought her up but man was Daisy a let down in this game. I would've really liked to play as her since she and Luigi (who is also misrepresented like mentioned in this post) are my favourite characters in the Mario series, but they just made her a carbon copy of Peach.

I also have a problem with the Links in this game. Now sure, they use boomerangs, bows and bombs in their games, but did all three of them really need to have those when there are other items that could've gotten the spotlight instead? Toon Link could've had the deku leaf, the grappling hook, the skull hammer, heck even the Windwaker itself. And why doesn't Young Link have any of the masks from Majora's mask despite it being the game that he's most well known from? Considering how big of a thing the different items and mechanics are in Zelda games they could've included some of them in the movesets at least.

If you ask me the developers should stop focusing on bringing in new characters and instead on actually making the existing characters feel and play like the characters they're meant to be.

My thoughts exactly.

Thatโ€™s kinda the big problem of adding and creating a huge roster: Some characters get neglected in the process.

If there were to be a Smash 6, instead of adding more and more characters, they should just give all the older characters a fresh new moveset, as well as getting rid of clones, as so many characters have outdated moveset (some having the same moveset since 64.) As well as make the characters feel like themselves and not a โ€œvisionโ€ that Sakurai portray them as.

Dark pit in kid Icarus uprising: an incomplete copy of pit whoโ€™s very mysterious, heavily implied to be a manifestation of pitโ€™s deep desires of wanting to be independent, goes trough a complete character arc and even is the reason both pit and Palutena are even alive by the end. He and pit has a connection, in dark pitโ€™s own words โ€˜when you were a ring, I was less than nothing, weโ€™re connected, no you no me, two sides of the same coinโ€™ and a bit later they have an awesome pre boss battle cry together.

Dark pit in smash bros: PiT bUt EdGy.

Wow, itโ€™s really something when Sakurai portrayed one of HIS CHARACTERS incorrectly in Smash.

demogorgon_main ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 16:26:17 on May 21, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Just remember that Palutena is actually just a bunch of kid Icarus uprising moves blended together into the model of Palutena. And did you know that pitโ€™s moveset is mostly original? Palutenaโ€™s bow actually debuted in smash brawl and is made up by sakurai, so all of his using the bow are technically smash original. The orbitars are a weapon you can use and so are the upperdash arm and electroshock arm. Dark pit actually never uses an arm weapon or an orbitar weapon.

Only a First Blade, wich is the first weapon he gets in chapter 6 and also the first weapon you recieve at the start, I like the detail.

The ogre club, one of the best melee weapons in the game, why isnโ€™t that his smash attack?

The dark pit staff. Obviously. Wich im pretty sure uses the same pattern arrows if you equip it yourself in the game.

And the silver bow, an incomplete prototype of the iconic Palutenaโ€™s bow. An incomplete copy huh? Sounds familiar.

Anyways I made my own little concept of dark pit right here . Using other weapons from kid Icarus uprising and his iconic staff to seperate him more from pit

Anytime! I am just a huge fan of kid Icarus uprising despite not owning sinse 2012 and I barely remember playing it. But I recommend watching a playtrough of and experience the awesome conversations, story and the fast paced gameplay. Maybe even play it yourself if you a 3DS. But I heard the controls can be physically painful. Either way itโ€™s an absolute masterpiece

he doesn't control everything that happens in Smash, you know. he's a game director, not dictator. he's not the only person behind the game

To be fair, Marioโ€™s replaced taunts put a little bit of that playfulness back in.

Not that I disagree, of course.

Daisy in her games: a tom-boyish princess who loves to party but is also very strong and can stand up for herself (like when she slapped bowser)

Daisy in smash: literally just a peach clone.

Shoot, forgot about Daisy.

she is a peach clone in the mario universe too tho

KawaiiKlutzi ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:14:17 on May 21, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

no she isn't?

im just gonna let your downvotes do the talking

StoneColdMiracle ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 21:56:09 on May 21, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

downvotes mean nothing, your description of daisy could literally describle peach apart from the word Tom-boyish

Shulk in his own game known as Xenoblade Chronicles: A blonde man who screams like Goku when he gets enraged.

Shulk in Smash: R e y n

Bowser Jr in his games: Fights with his paintbrush which is stolen from E. Gadd.

Bowser Jr in Smash: Fights in his Koopa Clown Car.
