For me it wasn't "the floor is lava," it was "I saw the movie Tremors too young." And it wasn't a game, it was literally being afraid to touch the ground for like a year.

I actually had a spider go in the toilet before. I had such a hard time using the toilet for a little while after that. It wedged itself in a spot that made it difficult to kill, too. But thankfully it was noticed before anyone sat down.

One of the things I like about my step dad is he is basically Burt from Tremors. (More so when he was in his 40's and 50's, he's pushing 70 now.) He's kind of an asshole, but he usually made me feel safe.
Also poltergeist and vacuums. No one else ever seems to remember but in one of the movies there is a scene where the vacuum starts running on it's own. I was always afraid they were going to come to life and suck me up. I still look at them funny sometimes.
After I saw it I couldn't walk across my front lawn. I left my basket of barbies by the tree, and my dad walked on the grass and told me to come get it. I was terrified that he was going to die.

My sister forced me to watch "It", "Tremors", and "THEY" when I was five. I slept with a nightlight until I was 14, wouldnt walk on open dirt until I was 9, and I broke my best friends nose when he dressed up as a clown for halloween.
For it, it was seeing "it" that fucked me up. Could barely go to the bathroom alone and was always convinced he was sitting in my room watching me sleep, and if he saw me awake he'd kill me.

My dad made me watch it as a kid, and I'm in that boat. I couldn't stand still anywhere unless I was at least one storey off the ground for like six months.
One of the most fun nights I've had recently was when some friends and I were wandering around looking for a bar to get some drinks. Before we found a bar though, we found a playground and decided to play grounders. It went on for about 2 hours and I was sore the next day, but man was it fun and nostalgic. Never stop playing.

The floor is lava: where you walk across the room without touching the floor (basically jumping on the furniture)
Don't let the balloon touch the floor: where you hit a balloon in the air and the next person has to hit it into the air before it can touch the ground. You can play this solo, but it's not as fun.
Ah, thank you so much haha. Idk why I kept thinking again and again that all balloons are filled with helium, so how in the world would you want it to not touch the ground. ๐๐

I was at a college St. Paddy's party last Friday night and I got a small get together to play the game. I thought I was being childish but it caught on and soon everyone was playing!
One night on a cruise ship, while waiting for the big nightly show, the crewmates gave out beach balls. People started blowing them up, and the entire audience and crowd while waiting began to play "Don't Let the Ball Touch the Floor." It's not a joke amongst any age, really

My High School had some weird pattern on the floor with a lot of colors so Each step had to be a different color, and it was hard at points because there were too many white tiles near the stairs
I do something kinda similar, I always feel the need to never step on the same tile twice. It generally involves stradling a line and many awkward strides.

That's how i thought of driving through snow at night. Hell I still do that
what i do is i try to drive at 88 miles per hour so i can go back in time but then i ended up running a guy over and going to jail for 7 years. i got raped in jail a bunch of times and ended up with hepatitic C. feels bad man.
Are those ones creepy? I can't remember which those are. I can appreciate how well written a lot of the creepy ones are, but they just get to me too much.
The first one is pretty darn creepy but kinda complicated and would take a while to fully explain. It's a red disk that is attracted to mirrors and responds to people holding it by changing color and allowing them to step through any mirror to a new type of world for each person. Might be my favorite one too. Relinking because it got deleted.
I remember being freaked out by the staircase one, though I'm sure if I went back to it now it probably wouldn't be as creepy as I'm remembering it... don't think I've read about the disk.
Can't say that I did, but my first nightmare involved a woman screaming eternally, the "camera" zooming outwards into a series of painful erratic lights and then blackness, then me waking up in sleep paralysis.
Same here! My running guy would also grab telephone poles and swing around them gymnastically, but sideways I guess, since they were vertical then keep on running. It was almost like parkour, but before parkour really became a thing!

I held my finger to the window and pretended it shot a powerful laser and that everything we passed got destroyed and was all flying through the air and stuff
Running alongside vehicle thing was actually referenced in a cartoon called "Clarence" who is a simple-minded boy into typical kiddy things. It shows you him twiddling his fingers in a "running man" pose while he looks at the scenery passing by outside the car window, imagining it is a man running alongside him. I lol'ed when I saw that!
When I hear people describe these games, I never hear them say the version I used to play when the droplets were relatively stationary after rain. You pick one droplet to be the running man and you pick a level of depth behind the window as a starting point. The droplet becomes your "running man". It's much harder this way and you end up looking foolish as you shift your head around to gain the perspective where the droplet "makes it". But you're seven so who cares? Also, you can fudge the results.
I played those, but I also played/still play "don't let the highway lights be blocked by the rear view mirror" (when I'm in the back seat). Almost like an OCD thing. Does anyone else do that?

I liked to use two fingers and pretend to walk from one end to the other but avoiding all the moving water droplets. I always cheated though, and told myself it didnt touch my fingers.
Oh man! As a kid, we would drive to my grandparents for special occasions and what not. It was a little over an hour drive and the highway was surrounded by nothing but almond trees and other shrubby farms. My finger man was a pro at jumping around that shit.
I was big on Tony Hawk games as a kid so when I rode the bus I would image someone grinding along the kerb and rails doing a massive combo all the way to school.
I also had a fun game where i pretended there was a giant blade coming out of the car, slicing everything perfectly on half, except would bend around people and like n ... i think younger me was leaning towards chaotic neutral

I would imagine how lasers would bounce off of different materials and angles, but it eventually got subconscious and started to drive me crazy because it would be constant whenever looking at walls, and now I have a consistent 100% in math and I'm going to be a mechanical engineer, and I'm not sure if the amount that I imagined different angles and shaped had something to do with that..?
I always imagined the imaginary person running along side the car and jumping over telephone lines and street lamps. Especially along with a good beat to a song. Ahh good memories.

What about kids who grow up in places with no cars, there are still many places like this, so it doesn't fit with the "no matter the background". And I never pretended they were fighting, it was always a race for me.
Grew up in Florida - ours was a similar game. The ground was water but we had a shark instead of a crocodile. Being that it was Florida, an alligator would have probably been more appropriate.
Did anybody else play a game where you had to get to a point in the house while your hand's touching the wall and you can't take your hand off the wall or else you lose? So you'd end up going halfway around the house because you're glued to the wall unless you were smart enough to close a door and go across.
That's what I did anyway. Only played the floor is lava like twice in my life but I've played don't let the balloon touch the floor a bunch.
How about that game where's your fantasize that your two of your fingers are a pair of legs "running" alongside various surfaces as you walk after your parents in the store, "jumping" across empty space only to land into running position again.
In my country the version is heaven and hell where we all race to "heaven" at the start of the game and chase each other. Whoever falls in "hell" first loses.

I'm currently 28. Last fall I was doing a rotation in palliative care with some fellows and an attending. We had a party and played don't let the balloon touch the floor. It was great.
i am connected to the desk, desk is connected to the building floor, building is connected to the school garden, garden is connected to the town, etc? if so, it was my past time too, for a while.
As a kid, The Land Before Time messed me up for life with the line, "don't step on a crack or you'll break your mother's back". To this day, over 20 years later, I still have OCD about walking on sidewalks.

I'm not a scientist or anything, but I always figured that the 'floor is lava' game is pretty instinctual when we look at our ancenstors. Trees are safe, the floor not so much. Much the same as the grip human babies have in their hands to hold their own weight with ease.
The balloon is simpler I think. Floaty things are fun, just like bubbles or rubber duckies. They are exceptions to the physics we know up to that point and therefore worth playing with. Just my 2 cents!
I'm currently in the Philippines to travel a bit, and of the things I've seen one of the most immediate events that I connected to was seeing some children avoid touching the ground, followed by later seeing a child in the mall try to jump on only the grey tiles.

Maybe it was evolution's way of preventing kids from falling at a young age? The kids that play it naturally didn't fall off shit because they naturally watched their step and stayed on a surface they already knew won't kill/hurt them... hmmm
It is crazy when I went to college and met kids from all over the country that did the same dumb stuff as me growing up. Night games, ding dong ditch, the slug bug game, nose goes, and many more things that I thought we created as kids but really everyone was doing it
There's actually a pretty cool explanation for it.
Common games like this were likely "hardwired" into us to help us learn agility, dexterity, and other misc. skills needed for survival way back when you'd actually have to pay attention to where you were stepping.
It's kinda like the reason that all your ticklish spots are also where your weaknesses are: you'd instinctively react to protect those areas
Did anybody else pick a smudge or something on the windshield and slightly move your head from side to side so the smudge would weave between the lines in the middle of the road?

Whenever I went to the super market with my mom, I would always try to walk on one colored tile (usually they were patterned white+blue, or something like that) If I walked on the wrong tile I die. It was fun but my mom got annoyed sometimes because it would slow her down with me having to jump from tile to tile.

I once read an article about "child culture". For example that children apparently use the same songs and phrases across the country despite never being "teached" them by parents or other adults.
It's especially extraordinary because those child "generations" are so short. It's only a few years where those phrases are seen as attractive. Older kids already resent using them.
You lot don't know you are born, in my day the floor really was lava. My Dad would make me get up at 5a.m to sweep the lava clean and then he'd beat me to school with his belt.
Also in doing research regarding video game violence, children of many different socioeconomic statuses play with pretend projectile weapons; be they spears, bows or fake guns. It's just part of human nature!

Psychologist here, this is actually common to most children because it has to do with an innate evolutionary instinct to survive; during our hunter-gatherer days, it was dangerous for children to not be aware of the terrain they traversed in a similar sense to the dangerous way that in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.
I'm almost done my undergrad in psych and I was just about to make a comment like this! If there are cross-cultural studies, I wonder if engaging in these types of play leads to specific changes in children's neurodevelopment, because that would be a really interesting study (unless it's already been done haha)
I may be late and it may have been stated already but personally I think it's built around the fact children don't have the rules of the world beat into their heads...If you bounce a balloon up it and why is the floor safe?
And it's been going on for decades! Before social media, before email, before cell phones. I've always been fascinated by this phenomenon. No matter where you were from, you know that the floor was lava, you know how to draw the Super S, you know to touch a doorknob after you farted, you knew you'd get punched two times if you flinched, you knew you'd get punched if you looked at the hole when it was below the thrower's waist. Somehow, these rituals found their way to every corner of the country, and beyond. Still blows my mind.
I never played "the floor is lava", but I did used to pretend that the playground set was part of this airship, flying through the sky. And like some sort of action hero, I had to try and climb and jump from one end to the other without touching the ground, otherwise it meant I fell to my death.
For me, it was never called "the floor is lava". It didn't have a name. It was just the challenge of getting between the furniture and moving it to increasingly challenging positions.

Wonder if it has something to do with being a ape i heard somewhere that everyone has the falling nightmare because of an instinctive fear of falling from a tree will get you killed so anyone without that fear didn't live long enough to breed.

"Lava Monster" or "Shark" were me and my friends' games of choice. "Shark" was usually played on playground equipment. "Lava Monster" was generally played in the walkways of my cousin's apartment complex. "Shark" was where the person who was the shark could only touch the bark chips and slides, while the human players could touch everything but could be tagged if the shark could get to them. "Lava Monster" was where the human players could only touch cement while the monster could be in the dirt/barkdust/etc and could be on cement(aka walkways) only for ten seconds.
We took our "floor is lava" games waaayyy too seriously.

One of the most fun nights I've had recently was when some friends and I were wandering around looking for a bar to get some drinks. Before we found a bar though, we found a playground and decided to play grounders. It went on for about 2 hours and I was sore the next day, but man was it fun and nostalgic. Never stop playing.

The floor is lava: where you walk across the room without touching the floor (basically jumping on the furniture)
Don't let the balloon touch the floor: where you hit a balloon in the air and the next person has to hit it into the air before it can touch the ground. You can play this solo, but it's not as fun.

The first one is pretty darn creepy but kinda complicated and would take a while to fully explain. It's a red disk that is attracted to mirrors and responds to people holding it by changing color and allowing them to step through any mirror to a new type of world for each person. Running alongside vehicle thing was actually referenced in a cartoon called "Clarence" who is a simple-minded boy into typical kiddy things. It shows you him twiddling his fingers in a "running man" pose while he looks at the scenery passing by outside the car window, imagining it is a man running alongside him. I lol'ed when I saw that!

When I hear people describe these games, I never hear them say the version I used to play when the droplets were relatively stationary after rain. You pick one droplet to be the running man and you pick a level of depth behind the window as a starting point. The droplet becomes your "running man". It's much harder this way and you end up looking foolish as you shift your head around to gain the perspective where the droplet "makes it". But you're seven so who cares? Also, you can fudge the results.

When I was a kid ..We had a game called "KUMIR DANGA" In English it means "crocodile and land"
So instead of lava it would be water.
One person would be in the water and he would be The crocodile.. the rest have to stay on elevated surface.
You cannot stay in one location for long and once touched by a crocodile you are out.
The first person to be out will be The crocodile in the next round.

Grew up in Florida - ours was a similar game. The ground was water but we had a shark instead of a crocodile. Being that it was Florida, an alligator would have probably been more appropriate.

Did anybody else play a game where you had to get to a point in the house while your hand's touching the wall and you can't take your hand off the wall or else you lose? So you'd end up going halfway around the house because you're glued to the wall unless you were smart enough to close a door and go across.

I'm not a scientist or anything, but I always figured that the 'floor is lava' game is pretty instinctual when we look at our ancenstors. Trees are safe, the floor not so much. Much the same as the grip human babies have in their hands to hold their own weight with ease.
The balloon is simpler I think. Floaty things are fun, just like bubbles or rubber duckies. They are exceptions to the physics we know up to that point and therefore worth playing with. Just my 2 cents!

There's actually a pretty cool explanation for it.
Common games like this were likely "hardwired" into us to help us learn agility, dexterity, and other misc. skills needed for survival way back when you'd actually have to pay attention to where you were stepping.
It's kinda like the reason that all your ticklish spots are also where your weaknesses are: you'd instinctively react to protect those areas

I once read an article about "child culture". For example that children apparently use the same songs and phrases across the country despite never being "teached" them by parents or other adults.

And it's been going on for decades! Before social media, before email, before cell phones. I've always been fascinated by this phenomenon. No matter where you were from, you know that the floor was lava, you know how to draw the Super S, you know to touch a doorknob after you farted, you knew you'd get punched two times if you flinched, you knew you'd get punched if you looked at the hole when it was below the thrower's waist. Somehow, these rituals found their way to every corner of the country, and beyond. Still blows my mind.

I never played "the floor is lava", but I did used to pretend that the playground set was part of this airship, flying through the sky. And like some sort of action hero, I had to try and climb and jump from one end to the other without touching the ground, otherwise it meant I fell to my death.

For me, it was never called "the floor is lava". It didn't have a name. It was just the challenge of getting between the furniture and moving it to increasingly challenging positions.

I played "grounders" as my friends called it, don't let the balloon touch the floor, ever since I was 3 years old, a balloon in my home meant a balloon juggled.

"Lava Monster" or "Shark" were me and my friends' games of choice. "Shark" was usually played on playground equipment. "Lava Monster" was generally played in the walkways of my cousin's apartment complex. "Shark" was where the person who was the shark could only touch the bark chips and slides, while the human players could touch everything but could be tagged if the shark could get to them. "Lava Monster" was where the human players could only touch cement while the monster could be in the dirt/barkdust/etc and could be on cement(aka walkways) only for ten seconds.
We took our "floor is lava" games waaayyy too seriously.

This is so overrated, I see kids outside all the time. Kids can play on tablets/phones/etc AND go outside.
