The reason I like staying up so late so much is because between the hours of 1am to 5am, the world is quiet and no one expects anything from me. I could stare at my wall for 4 hours and there would be no consequences. It's so silent and calm. I love it.

Got to agree, the only thing I like more is being outside while it snows at those hours. What little sound was still left gets completely muffled by the snow. Pretty incredible feeling.

I love camping in the winter for this exact reason. There is nothing more peaceful than camping during a snowfall. You can't hear a peep.

Holy fucking shitballs. I saw this once when I was a kid, but could not remember hardly anything about it. Just a vague memory of an airplane and some weird monster things off in the distance. I've been passively trying to figure out what movie that memory was from for years. Mystery finally solved. Thank you.

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:40:45 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There are a lot of regions where it gets colder than that. I've spent the last two winters walking through as cold as -40 during the day. Can definitely see it being too cold for some, although if you're prepared and equipped it shouldn't really be a problem.
[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:43:05 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Oh, that's definitely doable. I've seen -30 during the day around here in the mountains. As they say in Norway, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:06:45 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I live in Duluth, MN, one of the coldest cities in the U.S., we pretty regularly see 20-40F below 0 in the Winter. A couple years ago we saw -75F after the wind chill was factored in on an ambient -50F or so. After -30F though you kind of stop caring about exactly how cold it is though and more about whether or not your car will start or if you'll just die.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:09:29 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well that sucks.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:22:07 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
To be fair I was a little melodramatic. The odds of you dying in winter are pretty slim unless you're drunk. Like the girl who got dropped off outside of her house at 3am, house keys in hand, made it to the door but didn't have the dexterity to put the key in the lock and turn it. She crawled towards the next door neighbors house, I went and looked for myself and the distance is like New York neighbors there, made it about half way or so and then passed out and I think died. There's a small chance she was found alive and was in critical condition or something but I'm pretty sure she died.
TL:DR fuzzy on the details but drunk girl froze to death/near death and bad things happened because Duluth winter.
Here's a link, I didn't reread it beyond enough to know it was the right story. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2543999/Alyssa-Jo-Lommel-19-fingers-amputated-left-porch-nine-hours-subzero-temperatures.html

I don't do much drinking myself, 22yo and assistant manager moving on up to manager soon enough according to my boss's boss, busy at work and I work at 6am most days so I tend to go to sleep early. But in the Winter I try not to drink hard unless I'm staying where I'm starting.

First time I ever went camping with my friends by ourselves, as soon as we set up our tents a very, very light snow started coming down. It was just starting to get dark so we all looked up and turned on our flashlights and in that beam of light you could see all of the little snow flakes falling down. It was so amazing. Honestly my favorite part of that trip. It was just so calming. I'll never forget that.

yo dawg, I just went camping at crater lake last week, and my family is your first thought when you think of a prepared camping family. Anyway, it was getting a little cold and we headed in. We checked the rating for our sleeping bags, and it was like 20 degrees Farenheit above what it was that night. Peaceful, but not fun :(. next time I will come prepared.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:33:09 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I've had the same winter camping bag since I was in Boy Scouts. When I got more seriously into mountain climbing, I got better clothing. Now I'm the warmest that I've ever been. If you have a solid base layer and a solid insulating layer, there's no reason you should be cold in a mummy sleeping bag.

But in the summer time. Start in Trenton, work our way over to Grose Ile, Wyandotte, Riverview. Those are great memories.

Everything is a lot brighter when everything is covered by snow too.
I remember when I used to live in Michigan, I'd just stare out the window during those hours, especially if it was still snowing, being able to see down my entire street, with a few streetlamps making a perfect serene scene.
Compared to the middle of summer where it's damn near pitch black when the light soaks and disappears into the lawns, trees, and plants.
And in Texas you get none of that, because there's so much damn light pollution from every other house having their porch lights turned on, or the corner gas station/strip malls on every other block.
Just a constant boring visibility, unfettered by natural things such as precipitation or starlight.

Snow itself is amazing for similar reasons: you have an excuse for not going anywhere or doing anything

Same for me, this past winter I got snowed in at a friend's house with a group of friends, and some of us went for a walk in the 18 inches of snow at 3am. It was just so peaceful and relaxing, barely any cars on the road, and the town was completely silent

ohh yea, so quiet you can hear the snowflakes.
frenzyboard ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 05:15:09 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I used to love the sound of falling snowflakes. I'd wake up extra early on school days, just so I could stand outside at four in the morning and listen to the soft tap-tap-tick-tap of a heavy snow. It's the kind of quiet you can almost hear God whispering.
But then I spent a night in a slot canyon without a tent. All I had was my sleeping bag, and a narrow slit in the sky that sometimes let a star shine through. The sound of the river became so constant, you ended up tuning it out. So much so that instead of the dull roar of foaming water and lapping crests on river stones, it ended up being more like a faucet running in another room. Birds didn't come down into the canyon at night. The rock cats didn't prowl camp sites when people weren't in their tents. The night was so quiet, you could hear a light wind rustle the leaves on the one tree within a hundred yards. You could hear the beat of a moths wing. Paf-paf-paf... You could hear the sound of two dozen spiders crawling on your sleeping bag, hunting the resting moths that were attracted to your sweat. And their legs on the fabric of your sleeping bag sound the same as falling snow. Tap-tap-tick-tap. If God whispers in the quiet snow, maybe the Devil whispers in the canyon.

I'm so sick of snow I'll be sick enough for both of us if it helps. Sure, it's great getting a snow day. It's not so great trying to go to the store when snow is in the forecast. Or when it's day 2 and your boss wants you in early to help with all the extra calls from the "day off" (that you used a vacation day on). So you shovel out your car, your front walk, and most of the driveway because your scumbag neighbors won't help and it's the only route out.
Then you spend a couple of hours trying to get to work, you do some work, then come home to find your driveway entrance plowed over and all the street parking gone. Oh and a nice layer of ice has formed underneath the packed fluffy stuff so your brakes are kind of iffy. And you have to shovel and salt the walk again because the kids who were off kicked more snow on it, and the city will fine you if it isn't clear. The fluffy white snow from earlier turned into a greyish brown mush. Your shovel breaks under the weight of the snow and ice so you call around to see which store might sell them but everyone is out.
You call for pizza because fuck cooking at this point, and they are closed or if you're lucky they say it will be over an hour. Your gloves, shoes, and bottoms of your pants are soaked and you have to do another load of laundry to wash the thermal undies you need to wear because it's way too cold out for humans. You sit down and turn on the the DVR only to find your favorite daytime show was replaced by an hour of people standing outside talking about the snow. You see a man on the news hugging the last shovel discussing the shovel and salt shortage.
When you finally put your head on the pillow to sleep, your phone makes an obnoxious alert noise to tell you another 1 to 30 inches of snow will be coming tomorrow.
Fuck snow.

I was in NYC during a 'snowpocalypse' blizzard a couple years ago and I got to see the heart of the City That Never Sleeps dead silent because of the snow. I remember walking alone through Times Square around 3am and between the dense snowfall, I could see anyone or hear anything from any direction. It was absolutely surreal, I'll never forget that feeling.

2 years ago on Christmas Eve, I went with my family and our German friend to a Catholic Christmas mass at Ettal Abbey in Bavaria. Beforehand, we had stopped in Oberammergau to find somewhere to have a drink. At 10 PM, pretty much the entirety of the town was shut down except for one small bar we found, which was very small and nearly standing room only. Wandering through the town past shut down shops with wood carvings and Bavarian clothing in the windows whilst the snow was falling silently... I'll never forget it.

That said, I live close enough to the ocean to hear the waves crashing in the rocks. Every night in the dead of the night, I can also hear the occasional outboard motor, surely it's fishermen checking on their lobster traps.

but there are plenty of times when i get hit by sudden loud noises.. not prepared for it... its just the nature of my business, and over time it will cause a high pitched ring in your ears. its not a big deal, i only notice it when i think about it, and i dont have trouble hearing the tv or anything... but there definitely is that frequency range of probably 18khz or so that is nothing but a ring and it never goes away. i havent been tested in a long time, i need to do that.

Welcome to my life. I work a shift that we call "deep swing" which is 4pm to 3am. If I get off work on time I get to come home and hopefully get to sleep before the sun comes up and the people start moving around. If I get the common two hour holdover the whole sleep day is fucked. Sun's up, cars, garbage trucks, gardeners, music, it gets hotter so it's harder to sleep.

Get A/C, dark, thick curtains and if you can't afford new windows that will reduce the noise, then get sound proofing inserts.

DerpyDruid ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:28:44 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Second this. Window A/C units are rarely more than $150 and I was blown away how little power they use (<$20/mo for two running full time). It's a bargain at twice the price on any budget. Put some cheap black out curtains, blankets or even fucking towels in the window and now I can finally sleep in a bit after the long nights doing sysadmin shit.

Leaf blowers. Always the leaf blowers. What do they even fucking do?? I'll tell you what they do.
They create an awful sound.
The create an awful smell.
The create an awful dust cloud of allergens.
The cover your car in dust.
And they send tiny little specks into your eyes that you can feel all fucking day.
I absolutely hate leaf blowers. I want to ban them. They are the worst thing ever invented and as far as I am concerned were created as a sick joke by yard workers to get paid while doing nothing but pissing off their employer. Fuck. Leaf blowers.

As incredible as this may seem, I saw this post about 4 years ago when I used to stay up late thinking this same thing. Then I grew up and realized the reason I stayed up so late wasn't due to it being calm, it was due to everyone else nagging me to get off my ass and start my life. While they were sleeping, I felt like I could live my life. When they were awake, I felt like dying.
anyone who feels this way needs to tell their family to calm the fuck down, then they need to go to therapy or fix their routine and take their parents' advice.

I'd love to have this sort of life but it seems like that would restrict social interaction to weekends or with other night shift people.

[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 04:59:36 on June 26, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
As some one who has worked the night shift, yes, it most certainly does fuck up your social life. I would find myself waking up "early" at like noon every other day or so to hang out with my friends and do stuff before i had to go to work and while the sun was still up. Then the weekends came around and completely fucked everything up. My body clock took months to recover back to normal. It really depends how introverted you are to cope with the quietness and inability to really hang out with your friends.

Yes, yes it does. It also fucks up your circadian rhythm.
I worked the night crew at a past job so long that the sun made me tired and the moon invigorated me.
I was your guy if you wanted to party at night. Not so much if you wanted to go to the beach while the sun was up.

I work a kinda-night-shift. 4pm to 3am. Like OP I get rewarded by inmate lockdown at 10pm after the craziness of the day. As for social life, it is really difficult especially on the weekend. I have to make the conscious decision to only sleep about 4 hours when I get off on my "Friday" so I can be awake with the rest of the world, or sleep a normal day and be stuck on the weird schedule all weekend. But it's worth being able to do homework for that last 5-6 hours.

When i was working night shifts, even back when i was young, it did cut into your party time or visit with friends time.
However, some people dont really do much of those things as they get older. Friends move away and get families and you learn to live online and communicate via games or social media.

(off night owl topic alert)
Push yourself to get out and become part of something. Join a club, any club. Volunteer. Religion. Books bikes bands cars cooking collecting. Anything you may think remotely interests you. You won't think you have the time. You will make up excuses but believe me the hardest part is starting. Go there and feel awkward for the first couple of times. Then things start to change... People will remember your name. They'll ask you things and you will answer. You will feel like you're starting to belong. That if you don't go then someone will notice, that the team isn't complete without you. Loneliness is the worst. Don't let it kick your ass. Get out and start something. Anything.

People ask me why I stay up late and this is what I tell them. I work at home without a set schedule and I'm usually up from 10-3am. I love going to the gym, going grocery shopping, and doing my chores around midnight. The world is too loud. When I lived in the country I had a more normal schedule because it's much quieter during the day.

Before morning there are birds. They start chirping. I dunno. Their presence made me feel perverse. I worked night shift for three years. There is something about being notched behind the normal world. There's a sweet spot between 12-4 one can occupy that is like what you describe, but transgressing it just feels weird.
I used to have to cover the windows completely, even the smallest sliver of light would ruin me.

That's why I loved the night when I was a kid. I'd walk out of the house because nobody was awake to ask where I was going. I could walk around or sit by the river or go do whatever. It was quiet and nobody was around to bug me or tell me to do anything or tell me I had done something wrong. It was just me and the moon and whatever animals were around. It didn't matter how late I was out, I could do without the sleep. I miss that. Now, I have to go to bed because I have shit to do in the morning and I can't really go without sleep anymore.

I actually find the same thing at work. I don't mind staying back and working after hours, in fact I prefer it because there's no constant stream of emails and people coming up to me requesting things. It's so peaceful and I can actually concentrate on my job! Put a pod cast on and I could go all night

This is the EXACT reason I take drives at like 1 or 2 in the morning. I live right next to a one lane highway that has real low traffic in the early hours so some nights it's just me, the road, and whatever Deftones album I have in at the moment.
When it's real clear, the moon lines up perfectly with the road on some places, and the scale of everything just hits me like I'm an insignificant little mouse chasing the big cheese in the sky

This. This is exact reason I bike to school (I have an A period) an hour early. Sitting in the silence at ~5am is just such a nice way to prepare for the high school bullshit that I know will happen throughout the day.

I can't help but stay awake late at night, I use reddit and youtube and check my phone and play games and think... I think a lot, I think about my friends, and my family, and the people I know, the things I see during the day, everything. I think a lot of myself, and I think that... I think that I need help. I need some mental help... I don't know what is causing these thoughts to sour my mind but every day, every night, I think if I should kill myself. God damn I'm in such a bad place right now I wish I could tell my friends. I wish I felt like someone really cared... and, I'm sorry. I hate this place. Fuck this place that we call home.

Me too, buddy. I wish I didn't have to sleep. Same reason why I liked rainy summer days back when I was a kid. No school. No need to go out. Just me, my room and the silence all to myself, while my parents went to work.
I wish I could get paid to lock myself in a room to think, rethink, overthink and overanalyze everything. I find it so calming and sweet, to think about life and imagine things.
I dislike how hectic and disrupting working at an office is. Sometimes I wish I was a real writer so I could have an excuse to hide myself in a little cabin for months at a time. Up in the mountains. Just my dog and I.

One of the few awesome perks of insomnia. I love going to wal-mart at around 2-3am because besides a few employees it's just so peaceful to do your shopping without worrying about bumping into people, or navigating crowds, or running into someone you know and being forced to have that half-awkward conversation about how things are going in the middle of the floor.

As far as preference is concerned, I'm a night owl (have been most of my teenage years). Due to lack of sleep though, I started to feel tired, so I went back to what would be considered a "normal" sleep schedule. That said, when I feel rested, I like to just have a white night. Not only is it so quiet and peaceful, but it's downright beautiful to see the sun come up in the early hours of the day. Also, yes, nobody expects anything from me. That times 1000.

ive heard that creative types like to do work during these hours because most of the people are asleep and less of peoples waking mental chatter is corrupting the collective human consciousness that the artist taps into .
