Why hasn't anyone strapped some cameras onto a sperm whale? They regularly dive into the deepest parts of the ocean and supposedly fight giant squids.

They did exactly this, like a decade ago!

They used a camera with a suction cup to follow the Sperm Whales down deep into the ocean, but never found the squid. They did see some interesting whale behavior though.

Later on we have found living giant squids and filmed them, often dying ones.

Whales are pretty smart, no? I wonder if they realized the critter cam was responsible for the very unusual light down there, and rubbed against the whale to get it off.

From what little I've read giant squid quickly dry out above water which makes them shrink so accurate measurements can be hard, perhaps this affects their skin color as well?

Nightvision is pretty useless in zero light. 0 times <anything> is still zero.

You need infrared. If that'll even work. I don't know how cold it is or how much the creatures differ in temperature.

He's talking about infrared illumination, not heat vision. I'm pretty sure that cam does have infrared illumination, it has some illumination anyway. Infrared penetrates pretty well and solid state cameras are extremely sensitive to IR.

[deleted] ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 23:24:40 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Eh actually I went did a bit of looking. I forgot water does a great job of absorbing most wavelengths of light.

The entire reason we can see the wavelengths that we do is because water absorbs them poorly, so they're all evolution had to work with.

Chances are good a FLIR camera would appear completely black.

ScionoicS ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 18:22:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Infrared is only used because its not visible. This makes it so you're still stealthy. It's easier just to use real lights because they're a lot brighter and you need that in 0 light situations.

Edit: I'm talking about active night vision

dekket ยท 67 points ยท Posted at 18:26:16 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

IR is still "real light". You could have a floodlight or something that could be as bright as you want, while still being infrared

ScionoicS ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 18:41:49 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Semantics but yes. You are technically correct. The best kind of correct. I meant visible light. It is cheaper to create wide spectrum flood lights though. Either way, someone else in this thread pointed out the real flaw in this idea. Strapping a spotlight to a whale is not an option.

GoSox2525 ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 19:42:37 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Ok then how about this. We strap a tracker to the whale, which we already do every day anyway. We get a small vehicle kind of like those things than scuba divers hold onto with the propeller. We set the tracker device to send it's location data out every few seconds. This data is received by the propeller vehicle thing which has a huge IR light mounted to it, and it can adjust its course according to the location data given by the tracker. Now you have a big IR light (or could be UV, or anything else) that follows the whales and can see, without creating any actual visible light (though I don't know what the visible spectrum of sea cretures is, it can't be too far off of ours), and can record without actually being strapped on the whale.

OR, bioengineer a biolumenescent whale. Like its entire body would glow fiercely.

PhilxBefore ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 23:37:38 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You had me at Bioluminescent whale.

EDIT: To resolve the spotlight problem, it does not need to be on at all times. We could tether the light turning on to some variable, like the whale's pulse increasing (which insures we get epic squid battles recorded.)

machina99 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:50:03 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

This reminds me of an episode of the show Better Off Ted where they create a bioluminescent squirrel. The squirrel goes crazy from never being able to sleep due to the glow.

Obviously that's a TV show, but I imagine making it glow would alert any possible prey and likely work against he whale in the long run?

GoSox2525 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:52:00 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

No the whole idea is that the whales lead you to the giant squids!

shuey1 ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 21:26:08 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The amount of energy you'd need to light up the area around a whale at the depths they dive to would probably boil the water at the surface, and it would take a lot of energy. think of it this way, if the light from the sun can't reach those depths, we'd need more power than that from the sun which is reaching the surface of the ocean, and a bioluminescent whale which makes enough light for a Camera to see things around the whale would never be able to consume enough calories to create that much light, partly because everything would see it coming and partly because it's a shit ton of energy thats needed to create that much light. However if you do get the IR spotlight working, I would love to see that thing boiling off tons of water to watch a whale swim.

GoSox2525 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:57:32 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

I was entirely sarcastic, but ok. You would not need nearly as much power as you think, the light source would already be at the depths you want to see at, it wouldn't have to be concerned with travelling over a thousand meters through fluid. You have terrible energy intuition if you think that it would take anywhere near the energy required to boil the ocean. And boiling "part" of the ocean makes no sense and would never happen.

the_swolestice ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:17:57 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

16skittles ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:06:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

What makes you think that the amount of light has to be more than the sun? The sun can't reach that depth because it needs to penetrate all that water. While you'd still need incredibly strong lamps to make an impact, it doesn't need to go as far as the sun does.

n9-00 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:55:34 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

ScionoicS ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:30:22 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

As someone else has said in this thread, water tends to absorb IR very well. Many ocean predators may also have senses which extend into IR

Infra red is absorbed pretty quickly by water as well. It doesn't pass through all that well. That is why we use sonar on subs etc.

Murtank ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:27:48 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Infrared wont reveal anything. It doesnt work in the ocean. Ir light gets absorbed by the water

edwardsnowden8494 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 23:52:03 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You can emit an infrared light that is picked up by infrared cameras. Thats how infrared vision works.

AnotherThroneAway ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:53:30 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Sure. But then why not attach a visible-spectrum light and camera instead? If nothing else, with IR you can't get color.

edwardsnowden8494 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 23:57:05 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Maybe becase we are trying to observe the journey of the whale. Not screw with it by attaching a bright light to it. Observe not disturb

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:01:00 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The camera in that video was infrared. But if there's nothing to see but empty water, yeah, it will mostly be a black video. The light won't show anything until there's an object for it to reflect off. If the whales had come across a squid, we probably would have seen it, but as the narrator says, it was probably just a diving exercise for the calves.

redditwentdownhill ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:11:55 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It would also need a tracker to recover the camera. Unless it broadcast the image.

zxDanKwan ยท 718 points ยท Posted at 17:10:05 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Deep enough down, you need a no-light camera.

[deleted] ยท 317 points ยท Posted at 17:27:04 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

After about 1000 meters you need a no light camera. At about 200 meters down you need low light cameras. These cameras also need to withstand pressure differences, be able to stay attached without harming the animal, be able to withstand temperature differences, and then be retrievable.

zxDanKwan ยท 118 points ยท Posted at 17:29:11 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

All of that, except once we have a global network established, the cameras can batch stream when the whale surfaces for air, which should be for at least a few seconds every hour or two, so theoretically possible with a strong enough transmission signal.

ReallyFnCleverName ยท 164 points ยท Posted at 18:23:14 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It is much more logical to have a method for the camera to break loose and float to the surface after a certain period of time. Then it's just an easy retrieval with a net.

that's a good point, I hadn't considered that, but how strong would this signal need to be and could it interfere with anything the whale is doing?

zxDanKwan ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 18:48:44 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Someone else commented on my last comment, and it actually makes a lot more sense to do it the way they commented. Especially in light of your comment.

Just let the camera roll until it's full, and then it detaches from the whale and floats to the surface.

Once there, it can give of a GPS signal, which is easier on battery life to blip once every hour than to try and stream video data. It reduces the hassle in getting the equipment back, it gets more reliable footage, since you don't risk transmission degradation, and it also removes almost all of the risk of the camera interfering with the whale's normal life (especially as small as cameras can be these days).

Overall, this method just makes much more sense.

Depends how far they transmit; you basically have a triangle of low energy consumption, long transmission range and high transmission data rate; you can only have 2.

You could give them something really fancy like a SHF/UHF satellite uplink and constantly send something like standard definition video of the time the whale had just been underwater, but to power that you would need something like a turbine on / in it (which would eventually get clogged) and also a decently sized battery. The satellite antenna would also be about the size of a dinner plate and would have issues in signal strength (due to the whales not keeping their backs pointed directly upwards) unless you also put it on a mechanical gimbal, or spent a ridiculous amount of money building an electronically steered array.

KeetoNet ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 18:40:52 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Just skip the actual whale entirely and build a whale shaped power generation facility with a camera and fully gimballed satellite uplink. Leave some room for a couple of passengers and have them drive around the ocean picking fights with giant squid.

be able to stay attached without harming the animal

If whales get barnacles then surely it's possible to attach a camera without harming the whale anymore than a barnacle would?

Also... how do other fish see each other that far down? If 'conventional' cameras don't work because there's no light, then use whatever the marine life uses..? Or maybe attach a light to the camera (but not projecting any visible light, so the whale isn't disturbed).

[deleted] ยท 33 points ยท Posted at 17:54:35 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

"Once theyโ€™re satisfied with their location, the barnacles dig in โ€” literally. As they mature into adults, they form tube-shaped cavities in their shells that actually draw in prongs of growing whale skin. The result is an attachment as firmly rooted as the most pernicious weed."

I don't know of any technology we have that would do that.

scotscott ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:52:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It's easier to make small things survive high pressure because of the surface area to volume ratio.

ResRevolution ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:49:27 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'm just going to respond to this comment.

Sperm Whales are my bae. I love everything about them and I will (hopefully) soon be dedicating my life, time wise, to learn more about them.

One of the biggest issues is that they remove the cameras from one another. Something about the cameras annoys the sperm whales, so they have a buddy remove it for them. It could be some sort of frequency the camera is putting out that they can detect. The sperm whale could feel this strange sensation on its skin and not like it. It could even be that the sperm whale can tell that the camera is affecting its hydrodynamics and for an animal that thrives on diving that is pretty much a big no. It could even be a fellow sperm whale seeing the foreign device and removing it without the sperm whale knowing it had a camera on it.

We have the technology for cameras to go as deep as sperm whales dive... the sperm whales just don't like the cameras.

And actually, now watching that YouTube video that is exactly what happened. The sperm whales just do not like the cameras. Until we can make a camera that we know is utterly silent and incredibly tiny we will probably never get full footage of a sperm whale critter cam.

PizzaGood ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:06:28 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They have an infrared illuminator, that's the only reason it can see as much as it can. "Night vision" if by that you mean low light and not infrared, would be utterly useless. It's not "low light" down there, it's "no light". No camera can see down there, any more than they can see in a deep cave with no lights.

parrotsnest ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:19:01 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Now if only they had nightvision

I don't think that existed back then. Was CoD out yet? <_<

skintigh ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:42:17 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Why wouldn't an inanimate object with no moving parts not survive the pressure? Just seal it up, maybe even pre-pressurize it. The things that don't survive the pressure are large squishy objects with big egos which require large, complicated vessels to protect them.

Saving the video for later, but can I get a heads up on how they attach the camera to the whale?

jsveiga ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:24:49 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It's quite clever, looks like a pump sucks air from a suction cup which attaches to the whale. Then I guess it releases the pressure when they want the device to surface. When it surfaces, it radio signals the mother ship for recovery.

MooseKnocker ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:31:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

That's awesome, I could only think they would harpoon a hook into or a team of guys would put a belt on the whale

jsveiga ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:43:30 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I first though that too, but then I was wondering how hard it would be to recover the equipment. The suction cup thing solves the recovering issue and is easier/less painful to attach. Clever scientists!

Actually they do. My biology teacher in high school told us that when it is whale mating season, you can literally see their semen from a helicopter because it's all in the water in a small area. Not sure how real this is but he was a good teacher and really knew his shit so maybe it's true.

edit: turns out my biology teacher knew his shit. He was a great guy and an even better teacher. We didn't actually learn about whale mating, but he would give us the most random, awesome facts almost daily and this was one of them.

Well, they didn't just 'try', they succeeded. Musically, they are very different. People do the same thing to all 'classical' (I mean that in the broad sense, not actually the classical period) musicians, and clump them together without realizing how absurdly different their styles are, just because of the context they know them from.

Princess_Little ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:04:35 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Emo want to die, Goth want you to die.

jelloskater ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 20:01:49 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The Cure is goth.

Goth are people who are into darker sides of reality/culture/etc. It was initially entirely a music trend. They aren't (edit: necessarily) depressed, but their views come of as 'depressing'.

Goth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64x_RCArfjU

Emo is based on the word 'emo'tional. They like to overreact about their own issues. Whereas goth people would ignore many aspects of life and think of them as meaningless due to their eventual demise, emo people would be whining about their relationships (or lack thereof). I don't care for either viewpoint, but goth is more respectable.

Emo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc6vs-l5dkc

Both have almost entirely died out. Scene kinda followed them, which also died out. And now there's hipster.

wayne_fox ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 21:22:10 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Hipster as a word has existed since the 30s I believe. There have been many waves and generations of 'hipsters.'

jelloskater ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:52:55 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

40's, but the term back then describes a very different trend than the one now. And there haven't been waves/generations of hipsters, this is either the first or the second, depending how you want to look at it.

wayne_fox ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:25:52 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

As a widespread movement by name, yes. But the movement by name overlapped with emo (see Armor For Sleep's Williamsburg music video), not just existing after its death, as you suggest. In fact, it started in the 90s (Montage of Heck refers to an early Nirvana review by hipsters), and it was named referencing the 40s trend, so it's not unfair to call it a second wave (by name). I also don't think the 40s trend was as different as you claim. It was a scene built around new trends in underground music. Same idea, hence the name copying.

The current hipster trend was described as 'bohemian' when it was first forming, which was what 40s hipsters were, then replaced by the beatniks, and then the hippies, before coming back to hipsters, as this describes. The hipster vibe has had many generations and iterations. So you're correct that, by name, there haven't been a plethora, but I'll stand by my original statement if we're talking about vibe and lifestyle choice (especially since I wrote hipsters in quotes to begin with).

jelloskater ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:59:17 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

"It was a scene built around new trends in underground music. Same idea, hence the name copying."

Which I agree with to some extent. It makes sense why they used the same term, but the genre/motivation of the music they are following are absurdly different. At their heart, it's two separate trends with superficial similarities.

"But the movement by named overlapped with emo...not just existing after its death, as you suggest."

That's misleading. Sure, they 'overlap', but only in the brief period as emo was dying out and hipster was picking up steam.

"Montage of Heck refers to an early Nirvana review by hipsters"

Huh?

"The current hipster trend was described as 'bohemian' when it was first forming..."

Yawn. We all have access to google. Don't bring up irrelevant shit to try to make yourself sound smarter. Pretentious as can be.

~'hipsters/beatniks/hippies/hipsters'"

Each their own unique counter-cultures with little to no relation to the previous.

"plethora"

Christ mate.

"...I'll stand by my original statement..."

It's wrong, I told you why it's wrong, you clearly googled it and failed to find any information to back up your claim, and then stuck your entire argument on an idiotic article that actually disagrees with what you said anyway. "And now we've come full circle". The article itself says this is the second wave of hipsters.

Agree to disagree. There have been two waves of hipsters by name and more by ideology. That's what I've said all along and that's what I stand by. Sorry if you disagree, but you have given me nothing to change my mind on the topic. It's mostly semantics anyway.

ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

jelloskater ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 06:43:07 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

"So you're correct that, by name, there haven't been a plethora,"

The problem is that you tried to pointlessly use a complicated word that you couldn't form a sentence with. What you said doesn't make sense. As long as I can understand what a person is trying to say I'm normally fine with it, but not when they are trying to sound smart instead of focusing on the topic at hand.

"...two waves of hipsters by name..."

Yes.

"...more by ideology..."

No, this is the very first by ideology.

"...you have given me nothing to change my mind on the topic."

The problem is that you made up your mind with no evidence. You were convinced that the have been previous 'waves' of hipsters. You then looked up evidence to specifically back that up, rather than researching for the truth. When you didn't find evidence, instead of realizing you were wrong, you went full moving goalpost fallacy.

"Agree to disagree"

That only works in the case of two valid stances. That's not what we have here though.

"it's mostly semantics anyway"

Semantics are incredibly important. Aside from that, you entirely dismissed the semantics based argument when you said "...two waves of hipsters by name and more by ideology...". There is no argument of semantics here, we both agree that there have only been two waves of hipsters by name.

"...you have given me nothing to change my mind..."

But I have. You also made up your mind based on absolutely 0 evidence or reasoning.

So let's go over the shred of non-existence 'evidence' you are sticking to, which is that 'hipsters/beatneks/hippies/(current) hipsters all share the same ideology'.

Hipster (1940's): -Listened exclusively to Jazz music. -"The hipster adopted the lifestyle of the jazz musician, including some or all of the following: dress, slang, use of cannabis and other drugs, relaxed attitude, sarcastic humor, self-imposed poverty and relaxed sexual codes." -Followed African American culture -No overarching philosophy.

Beatnik -Underground, anti-conformist youth. -Unique style (black turtleneck/beret/dark glasses. not mimicked) -Antimaterialistic

Hippy -Psychedelic music + drugs -Eastern philosophy and spirituality -Nomad-esque -Sexual revolution -Pacifist/anti-war

(Modern) Hipster: -Vintage/retro/ironic materialistic fashion/objects -Indie music -No overarching philosophy

None of the counter-cultures have the same 'ideology', and the current hipster trend has no relation to any of the previous movements. It's an insult to your own intelligence to try to argue differently, but I will gladly watch you try.

jelloskater ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:44:25 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The mind of a moron is baffling. I am entirely calm, and never claimed you to not be calm. When you realize you are wrong, simply acknowledge it and move on. That's the difference between smart people who become smarter and stupid people who become even more idiotic. I can only give you the information and the reasoning, I can't make you pick a path.

wayne_fox ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:53:42 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I was referencing Big Lebowski. Dude, chill. You obviously won the argument, no need for more name calling (not that there ever was, but if it made you feel better, who am I to stop you?). I just think it's funny how passionate people get over stupid issues, just to be right. How long did you spend typing and formatting your perfect internet reply? lol. No biggie. You were right, and I was wrong. Hopefully you can move on too.

jelloskater ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:16:06 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Sorry, I didn't get the reference at all (still don't know it).

I'm not passionate over the issue, I just don't care for 'unresolved' discussions so to speak. As long as the other person is being rational, I continue the discussion until every point has been covered.

"How long did you spend typing and formatting your perfect internet reply"

Hard to say. Typed it while watching netflix/listening to music/playing video games. Spent quite some time reading articles and stuff, but that's because I felt like learning more about it, and making sure my previous inclinations were actually backed up by facts. I'd say 30 minutes or so spent typing/researching.

Panic! At The Disco is not actually emo! Panic is pop-punk, and at some points leans more towards just plain pop, whereas emo is more of an offshoot of punk. In fact, there's a pretty big emo revival going on right now, it's just mostly underground. This is a pretty good example of modern emo, or, say, this.

jelloskater ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:41:50 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

All the emo people I knew growing up and wikipedia say differently. I tried to pick a song people would recognize, but I'll give a different example.

Here, happy now?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUC5T8NxHuA

"there's a pretty big emo revival going on right now, it's just mostly underground"

No there isn't. That's just indie/emo. There's neo music for every genre, it doesn't mean the trend is reviving.

waterslidelobbyist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:28:57 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Hardcore scenesters are still around, much less than in the nineties and early aughts, but they def haven't died out. I also have a problem with the progression from Goth -> emo -> hipster, although all of the emo kids and scenesters I knew in high school all live in Silver Lake and play in beardy folk bands now, maybe there was a progression.

jelloskater ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:46:26 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It's not so much a progression, as it is just a shift in trends. I doubt the people who actually took the ideals to heart actually made the transition, as emo and hipster have absolutely no relation (at least not any I can think of).

Timguin ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:55:06 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Both have almost entirely died out.

Where do you live? US? I'm just interested in where they've died out. I live in England and we still have a good sized and active community going on. Mostly the EBM/industrial and dark wave crowd, but also quite a few 80's goths and crust punks running around. My native Germany has a lot going on still as well, as far as I know. I'm guessing there's not much going on across the pond anymore. It never really took off as much there as over here, I believe.

jelloskater ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:07:52 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Oh, my bad. Yes I live in the US and am honestly 100% ignorant to the cultures in other countries. There's still some goths/emo/scene/etc clinging on here, but the trends are entirely gone.

Hardcharger87 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:27:21 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

jelloskater ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:36:17 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They are one of the most noted bands in the creation of the genre of goth music.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gothic_rock_artists

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_rock

Just googled "top goth albums". Pulled up the first 5 lists, each included a Joy Division album.

http://www.houstonpress.com/music/the-top-20-greatest-goth-albums-of-all-time-nos-10-1-6505490

http://spectrumculture.com/2013/03/21/13-best-goth-albums-of-all-time/3/

I'm sure there are better examples I could have chosen, that was just the first band/song to pop into my head. Regardless, Joy Division is goth.

Already is one, and they're already making a documentary

The 52-hertz whale is an individual whale of unidentified species, which calls at the very unusual frequency of 52 Hz. This pitch is a much higher frequency than that of the other whale species with migration patterns most closely resembling this whale's[1] โ€“ the Blue Whale (10โ€“39 Hz)[2] or Fin Whale (20 Hz).[1] It has been detected regularly in many locations since the 1980s and appears to be the only individual emitting a whale call at this frequency. It has been described as the "world's loneliest whale".

No whales can hear the poor fucker.

.

A feature-length documentary entitled 52: The Search for the Loneliest Whale is in production, shot by Joshua Zeman, the director of Cropsey, and produced by Adrian Grenier. Funded through a Kickstarter campaign, the film is due for release sometime in 2015.[9][10][11]

"Jรคtteblรคckfisken" reminds me of some of the long words used for street names that I saw during my trip to Europe. I think one of them was 28 letters and began with a D. Good story.

Lumpkyns ยท 180 points ยท Posted at 12:37:38 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

That is a brilliant idea. But would they need lights, and how would the whales tolerate strange lights stick on them?

mmmkunz ยท 176 points ยท Posted at 17:55:16 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

With some sensors, you could have the camera trigger a flash when it detects that the sperm whale is closing in for a kill. I'm sure there'd be some possible way to do this like looking for distinctive sonar pings or a burst of acceleration.

This would also have the effect of blinding and disorienting deep sea creatures in the moments before the whale attacks. To be honest, my goal isn't to study the ocean but instead to make cyborg whales which work cooperatively with human technology to overcome their enemies.

Darth_Hobbes ยท 68 points ยท Posted at 19:55:17 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Natural selection would begin to favor these whales, and those that are inclined to approach the scientists would live longer. Eventually stopping by the research vessels to get enhanced would be part of their migratory pattern.

They probably can't feel them, I mean we place trackers on turtles, seals, fish, sharks. I mean I saw some video with a gopro strapped to a turtle's back. Hell some whales live for decades or even a century with a harpoon in their back. Just put a small webcam sort of device with nightvision (lights would fuck up the whale's hunting) and it might get torn off or whatever, but there's a chance we could see some epic shit.

Unless the pressure in the deep ocean makes the camera break or something. I'd invest in developing such a technology. We spend too much time trying to explore space with idiotic hopes of terraforming a shithole like Mars when there's a ton of the Earth we've barely explored and need to focus our energy on preserving.

CRISPR ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 18:35:35 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

and even if it didn't it's massive next to Antarctica,

We do not have ALL go to the same place. I am sure there are people in this world I prefer not to live on the same planet.

Small selected group of people could colonize Antarctica. I am sure penguin meat tastes like chicken.

EasyxTiger ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:38:22 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Well, that defeats itself. No natural resources to export, not enough room to house very many people. It's nothing you want out of colony, and damn sure not worth what it takes to live there. I think McMurdo is as much colony as we need there.

CRISPR ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:42:12 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Historically colonization has been very rarely a movement (as in UNIX "mv" command), it was expansion: some folks went to scalp Indians (or vice versa, I am not picking sides right now), and some folks left to make German genius rule The Old World in three easy installments.

EasyxTiger ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:48:26 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

But that's my point, that wouldn't be expansion. If anything that's stagnating a lot of resources by pouring them into an extreme southern ice cube. Expansion there wouldn't do anyone a ton of good for anything but research.

CRISPR ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:49:53 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

aerosurgery2 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:54:15 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Uh Antarctica has accessible water, an atmosphere (basically period), not to mention a breathable one, lower winds, less erosion, lack of sandstorms. Whereas mars has mineral trapped minute amounts of water, Mars has 1/150th of Earth's atmosphere, making it near vacuum, what atmosphere exists is 96% CO2, and argon and nitrogen make up 3.8 of the remaining 4%. Has hundred of mile an hour winds, which with such a small atmosphere wouldn't be that big a deal if it wasn't carrying such small dust and sand particles that can erode the shit out of stuff. Much easier to live in Antarctica. And there's a ton of room on Antarctica, as shown here compared to Europe: http://mallemaroking.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Antarctica.png

EDIT: The only upside really of going to Mars is to spread out humanity to increase our changes of survival.

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:20:40 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

And it would be easier to leave Antarctica

EasyxTiger ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:00:30 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not fucking with hard numbers here, I'm just armchair theorizing. My point was just that if we were going to further colonize something on Earth, there's plenty of room in America, Australia, and probably plenty of other places that don't regularly see subzero temperatures. Plenty of land here, but Mars is literally a whole other world. So if we want to further colonize Earth, pick the easier road. If want something really hard, may as well go big or go home.

aerosurgery2 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:07:44 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Gotcha. My vote is Moon first for technology demonstration and maturing. It's close (only a couple days away) and then if shit goes downhill fast, you can save people and bring them back. Gravity on Moon is 1/6 Earth while Mars is 1/3 Earth. Regolith to simulate sand issues, similarly small to nonexistant atmosphere. Then Mars and Venus at same time. I'll let you look up all the pros of colonizing Venus, but it's some pretty cool stuff.

EasyxTiger ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:17:33 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

If memory serves, Venus has those superdeep caves all over it, right? Or, wait, actually that was a Vonnegut novel. Whatever. Anyway, the Moon would be cool. Wonder what humanity would look like after a few generations there.

aerosurgery2 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:19:56 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Longer limbed, thin boned probably (see the Expanse sci-fi novel series, they discuss changes from all of the different places humans live, pretty cool). And we couldn't live on the surface of Venus, at least not without significant terraforming. Pressure 90x that of Earth. We could create a floating cloud city though, which would be sweet.

EasyxTiger ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:22:12 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Is the atmosphere hella thick there? I kind of imagined it would be bare bones for how close to the Sun it is, but that could just be more reason.

aerosurgery2 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:29:08 on July 14, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Runaway greenhouse gas effect. Super thick atmosphere of CO2.

GoSox2525 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:51:45 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Mars has more promise than Antarctica. They're both cold, but mars actually has mineral filled soil, and it may be possible to farm there with some heavy bioengineering. Anarctica is a bunch of ice and stuff.

CRISPR ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:55:48 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The main mineral resource known on the continent is coal. It was first recorded near the Beardmore Glacier by Frank Wild on the Nimrod Expedition, and now low-grade coal is known across many parts of the Transantarctic Mountains. The Prince Charles Mountains contain significant deposits of iron ore. The most valuable resources of Antarctica lie offshore, namely the oil and natural gas fields found in the Ross Sea in 1973.

I am 90% sure that global warming won't melt coal and iron.

It's not much farther than sending humans to Mars and them surviving in a bubble long enough to plant enough trees to turn Mars into a lush paradise.

We're basically just shipping some human corpses to a new planet and all we'll accomplish is burning more rocket fuel.

GoSox2525 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:12:25 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*
  1. It would be one of the most unforgettable adventures of human mind, and those to go would leave a legacy far greater than Armstrong, or nearly anyone else. It would be a testament to the capability of humanity, the imagination and creativity of humanity, and the information learned will fill textbooks upon textbooks. It will change the world. The rocket fuel burned is one of the last things to consider when looking at the implications of a voyage to Mars. We will know the Cosmos just a little better (just like deep ocean exploration would do).

  2. People may need to go there one day, if setting up a colony is successful. You read this as fiction, but no, there may very well be a day where there is absolutely no one on Earth, yet a population on Mars. It is the only reasonable platform for the extension of the lifetime of the species.

You sound so ignorant. You are telling thousands of astronomers, geologists, engineers, biologists, and more, that their work is pointless and should cease, without even taking any time to understand it.

It basically comes down to this: We have a problem on Earth, and that is that we are damamging the ecosystem which supports us, and we are arguably overpopulated. We need a solution. Some people choose to reach for the stars, and do whatever is possible to continue on, and experience the universe to its fullest. Some people, like you, would rather control the population, not giving two shits about the uneducated or the poor. Which one of those people are really concerned about the well being of humanity? The difference is simple: those who are for mars do not see a limit in our potential. You put strict limits on everyone.

GoSox2525 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 18:44:56 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

What a stupid comment. We will rot either way. Earth will never be perfect. No matter what we do, everyone will die in a relatively short time period. So why not make the most of our time here while it lasts? There is so much to know, so many courageous questions to ask, and so many mind boggling answers that lie only in space. We do it because we crave adventure, and we crave to know. Telling someone to fuck space and stay on the ground is such a sad thing to hear.

Had you been living a couple hundred years ago, you would have condemned the voyages to America. "We have plenty of shit here to deal with, fuck the "new world", what's the point in wasting energy going over there"? Don't you know that all the trackers on marine animals that you seem so excited about are only possible because man had a passion to learn about the cosmos, and launched satellites?

We have done way more than rot by looking at the stars, and we would be very behind if we never had. The fact that you even said that is an insult to hundreds of thousands of humans who have collectively worked on the study of the sky, which we have gotten so much out of. You have in one sentence told all of them that they have wasted their time, have fucked up priorities, and should be doing something else. Nobody who is passionate about space exploration is saying "fuck the oceans".

Why don't whales get the bends?

Tehbeefer ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 17:55:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I think it's the same reason breath-hold divers don't. They're not continually breathing nitrogen, so not enough N2 dissolves at depth for it to be a problem when the pressure is relieved.

GrinningPariah ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 20:26:29 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Why don't divers use tanks of air with the nitrogen removed, then?

a_Light_Umbrella ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 21:36:33 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Because breathable air is 78% nitrogen.

brutinator ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:46:25 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Isn't pure oxygen still breathable though? Or is oxygen poisoning a thing?

Tehbeefer ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:58:54 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Both. As an analogy, pure ethanol is edible, but alcohol poisoning is definitely a thing.

brutinator ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:44:09 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

What does oxygen poisoning do?

Tehbeefer ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:14:41 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

This link, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_toxicity, says that it depends on the conditions (pressure mostly) under which intoxication occurs. For divers, it apparently hits the central nervous system first, causing twitching, tunnel vision, ringing in their ears, and sometimes-sudden seizures followed by unconsciousness. So to avoid this, if I understand this correctly, divers diving really deep (40m/130ft+) will use a blend with a lower volume-percent content of oxygen than normal air (which is 21% O2). I assume under those circumstances divers might not use this low-oxygen blend in shallow water and just switch to it once at depth.

brutinator ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:27:07 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Interesting, interesting. Where I live, there's oxygen bars everywhere, so I always assumed that pure oxygen was completely harmless, even though I'm sure those bars are safe. Always nice to learn something new!

It seems that its primarily focused on oxygen intake at high pressures. It mentions that it's dangerous for babies, but that it's almost totally safe in low pressure areas. How low pressure would it have to be for a grown adult to be totally fine breathing it for, say, 24 hours?

Tehbeefer ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:19:58 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

No idea. But, this part seems relevant:

In low-pressure environments oxygen toxicity may be avoided since the toxicity is caused by high partial pressure of oxygen, not merely by high oxygen fraction. This is illustrated by modern pure oxygen use in spacesuits, which must operate at low pressure (also historically, very high percentage oxygen and lower than normal atmospheric pressure was used in early spacecraft, for example, the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft).[85] In such applications as extra-vehicular activity, high-fraction oxygen is non-toxic, even at breathing mixture fractions approaching 100%, because the oxygen partial pressure is not allowed to chronically exceed 0.3 bar (4.4 psi).[85]

Apparently the longest spacewalk was almost 9 hours long, and if the Apollo capsules used low-pressure O2 normally, well, those missions were multiple days long; it took Apollo 11 three days just to get to the Moon. This indicates (at least before the fire that killed the three Apollo 1 astronauts) that cruising pressure was pure O2 at 5 psi (34.5 kPa).

I2eapel ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:39:48 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They do. Scuba tanks marked Nitrox have higher oxygen and lower nitrogen to improve dive times (you can't stay down very long at certain depths with regular air) and increase maximum depth.

Kitsyfluff ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:35:39 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Oxygen becomes increasingly more toxic to humans the deeper you go, and even here on the surface, pure oxygen is not good for you.

We need both oxygen and nitrogen and a bunch if other stuff to breathe

Tehbeefer ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:39:42 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

They do! However, pure oxygen is also kinda toxic at higher pressures (not to mention dangerous), so if they're going deeper than shallow water, they blend helium in to create what is known in the field as Trimix. Yes, their voice get squeakier when breathing it.

squattyroo ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:54:00 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Unencrypted_Thoughts ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 19:36:47 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The bends, also known as decompression sickness, occurs from breathing in compressed air for extended periods of time, like scuba divers.

When whales dive, they don't take a large breath and hold it in and dive, they exhale all the air then dive.

Whales have special lungs that are very efficient at absorbing oxygen and storing it in enlarged vessels, like an oxygen tank. Whale lungs absorb around 90% of the oxygen they inhale compared to us, who only absorb around 15%.

Some species can only hold their breath for only a few minutes before resurfacing for air while other whales can hold their breath for up to 90 minutes or more.

luger718 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:47:05 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

So they can exhale and then hold their breaths for up to 90 minutes?! Shit.

zombieattackfox ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:58:45 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

This is a really good question. Probably warrants an ELI5.

Flashpoint_Rowsdower ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:29:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You only get the bends when you have a supply of air that you're breathing underwater.

Wtb_jetpack ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:31:32 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

When you submerge an oxygen tank, all of the contents of that tank are compressed. Think of pulling a balloon under water. As the water pressure around the balloon increases, the balloon shrinks.

An oxygen tank does the same thing. Only these tanks aren't pure oxygen, there are other gasses as well - nitrogen being one of them.

So as you increase in depth, each breath is drawing more of those other gasses because they are so compressed. And therefore, to prevent poisoning, your body needs time to bleed them off. So you need to stop at lower pressures and get rid of them through respiration.

Whales don't have that problem because they are always breathing in at the same atmospheric pressure.

That's how I understand it atleast.

Edit: Downvoted? Really?

novaKnine ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:11:11 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The next question I have is how the whales are able to breath in at the same atmospheric pressure. The air supply they take with them should still be subject to the compression you were talking about, no?

Wtb_jetpack ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:23:04 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They breathe at the surface. Where the air is all under 1 atmosphere of compression.

They fill their lungs and then submerge.

This is very different with pre-compressed air. A single breath from a tank under many more atmospheres will give you much more oxygen (because it is compressed), but with that oxygen also comes much more 'contaminant' gasses - like nitrogen.

DingeR340 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:35:42 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

At great enough (partial) pressure even oxygen will become toxic

I wonder if it's prohibitively expensive to find out. My guess is the lens would crack, but we're humans we can probably put something together like a casing for it that survives crazy pressure. If we can send probes to the outer regions of the solar system we can strap a webcam to a whale's back

mustnotthrowaway ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 17:29:48 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I wonder if it's prohibitively expensive to find out.

I don't see why it would be prohibitively expensive to stick a camera in a high pressure chamber to see if it still functions. Even sending it to the bottom of the ocean and back wouldn't be impossibly expensive.

k3g ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 12:45:33 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Even if those things aren't a problem, and lets pretend that night vision (pitch black vision) is all accounted for. What would we expect to see? The only way to see a full battle would be a 3rd person view of the whole whale, because it isn't head to head battle but merely a grapple and bite. At most, we'll be able to see tentacles flinging around.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ MordorsFinest ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 12:48:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You could implant it on the whale's nose, but you'd probably see more than giant squid fights. We dont know much about their life in the deepest parts of the ocean. It's the same with Manta Rays, people only observe them during part of the day, for the rest of it they go to the deep. Lots of sea creatures migrate to the upper zones and then down to the blackness.

For all we know there are crazy monsters down there that never leave the deep, or mountains, forests, shipwrecks. It'd be cool to see what a whale sees for a year. Maybe sea creatures we already know do weird shit down there at night or during the day. Who knows?

k3g ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:51:39 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It's a good idea no doubt, even if it has nothing to do with the whales themselves. It'll be interesting to widen our understanding of the deep sea, as we know more about space than the ocean depths.

Whether or not it's plausible is the question.

As others have pointed out its so dark down there that a camera wouldn't be able to make out much and attaching lights would likely interfere with their natural hunting behaviour, it could alert squid to their presence. When I was in Dominica I met with Shane Gero from The Dominica Sperm Whale Project and he and his team were tagging groups of whales with acoustic sensors to record their social calls while diving. The Sperm Whales in Dominica are unique in that they stay in the area (around Dominica and Martinique) so they are easier to track and study long term. Shane and his team would listen in the morning with a hydrophone to hear the whales calls and find out what direction they were in. They'd try to get as close as possible to where the whales were going to surface then attempt to put on the acoustic sensor with a really long pole. The sensor had a suction cup that kept it on. It was really hard to time it right, but they have managed to do it and find out a lot of interesting things about Sperm Whale behaviour. If you're interested I suggest checking out their website thespermwhaleproject.org

hokie_high ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 19:48:20 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

What if they used something like an infrared or thermal camera, the whale wouldn't be able to see anything and unless its prey can detect those wavelengths it wouldn't affect anything.

RecklessOinker ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 19:07:08 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

What about infrared light? Not sure what wavelengths of light our ocean buddies can see, but a lot of times in manufacturing plants they use infrared lights. Humans can't see infrared, but most cameras can. This way they can light up the part without bothering the workers.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:20:35 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The Jarvis Circle strapped a camera to a sperm whale in 2003. But, the sperm whale was rejected by other sperm whales after accusations it was a reporter. The sperm whale left the sea and started working for The Guardian in the UK...but sadly died 15 minutes into its first day on the job. Breathing issues. And it was shot. Twice. In the face.

mashleys ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:05:04 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'd like to try a thermal camera on the sperm whale, in combination with a night vision camera, or a camera with a light... because while the thermal camera would be great at telling scientist if they are looking at something, the problem is that picking up fish and plants would be harder, because fish are cold blooded, and well plants... And they would be lacking the ability to identify species well because it picks up radiation.

HumfreeBugart ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:44:39 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Subsea cameras are rated to the depths and pressure the whales will go to. The problem would be that a light would also be needed and even then the range of the camera vision would only be a few metres. You could improve that with a SIT low light camera which needs less light and improves the range slightly. Biggest problem I see is having to harpoon the whale to fit all this equipment.

Actually Sperm Whales only eat squid, they're very timid and more afraid of us than we are of them. You do have to be careful of their tail smashing you if you get too close and they get scared, but most likely they'll just swim away if they don't want you near them. I managed to get in the water and swim with several different sperm whales and it was the one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

waFFLEz_ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:01:11 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Scientists have tried, but it's harder than it looks because the camera first of all have to get attached to the whale (which is hard because it's hard to get close to the whale) and then the camera has to be able to handle the high pressure while diving

Theres a LOT of sperm whales. I guess you could strap a camera and a light to them....

DrColdReality ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:22:07 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Because once it goes deeper than ~200 meters or so, there's almost no light. And that's if the camera could take the depth.

Researchers have attached various recording devices such as depth gauges to various diving marine animals, like whales and seals. But the more depth the instrument can take, the bigger and heavier it is, and the harder it is to attach it to the animal. For whales, researcher typically just spike it in or use a special type of organic glue.

prometheus345 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:23:35 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They do! However not with cameras, since after about 30 meters you wouldn't see a thing (as others mentioned). Whales have been tagged and acoustically monitored for a few days.

http://www.creem.st-and.ac.uk/mocha/open-meetings/brsworkshopsmmlam

This experiment tries to determine how whales react on sonar transmissions. They tag a whale (or other marine mammal), and do controlled exposure experiments to investigate if whales change their behaviour when a sonar is active. Using the tag, which is attached to the whale, they monitor position, depth, acceleration ans received sound as heard by the whale.

urmyheartBeatStopR ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:35:07 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Cause the technology we have can't handle those pressure.

Those camera will be crush into a tiny pebble.

The closest thing I've seen was a documentary where they put a suction cup camera on them and when it hit a certain depth it floats up to the surface.

So this is basically engineering, we did the most closest thing we can within the budget and our current tech.

The depth where those awesome giant squid fights are happening are in depth where our technology can't handle those pressure.

Although James Camera had a submarine that went down very deep in one of those deepest trench. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what's preventing them to use that technology with whales and camera (perhaps apples and oranges tech).

I also wouldn't go alone down that depth with that sub and a camera. I do not want to be near any giant squid in a submarine that's struggling to handle pressure in those depth while dealing with squid.

Because the depths at which these epic battles take place are so low there is barely any light so footage would be unusable, also the pressure down there would absolutely destroy a camera

1wsx10 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:18:50 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

if they deal with the pressure, thy can use an infra red light to see without disturbing the wild life (hopefully)

Blauruman ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:22:00 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I can honestly say I'm not expert on the subject, and I don't really know if infra red light cameras would actually work down there, I may be making a stupid mistake here, but doesn't red also dissapear from the spectrum if you go down deep enough? or does that not effect infra red at all?

70m4h4wk ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:28:37 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

infrared has less to do with red and more to do with the waves longer than red, that being said, I dunno what happens to it under water...

1wsx10 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:07:15 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

by "use infra red light" i mean they have an infra red light on their vehicle, like a torch. you dont need a special camera to see infra red light btw

the reason i suggested it is because most land mammals can not see infra red light - so maybe most aquatic creatures can not see it either? thing is it entirely depends on the environment they evolved to deal with. eg. the mantis shrimp can see a wide range of colours but most of the marine world is largely undiscovered - especially in the deepest parts so we never know what we could be disturbing if we shine any kind of light down there really.

Blauruman ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:23:21 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

yeah you have a point there, I know most of the deep sea life has a way to attract prey, mainly lights right? like the angler fish? however there are things that eat an angler fish and find it based on its light, So maybe use the same source of light to produce the same effect? that way were sure to find something, and we'll get to see it from the inside! (just to make sure, this is a joke, I don't seriously believe we could get a live feed from so far away from a camera submerged under a good 5-6 kilometers of salt water)

jroddie4 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:14:31 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:58:08 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They already strap cameras to sea creatures that go pretty deep and they have timed release mechanisms and the cameras float back up and have GPS trackers on them. The problems I've seen so far are getting a good angle, night vision, and making sure it stays strapped to the animals. I think it can be done.

They also strapped one on a Mako shark and it went way deeper, but I don't remember the name of the show that had that and the footage really wasn't great because of the bad angle/darkness.

Good old shark week. Thanks for that. Ill look it up.

If we can send probes into space we can probably send probes into the ocean no? Is oceanic pressure greater than pressure in space?

jsveiga ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 12:54:44 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Much more; in space you have close to zero atmospheres (atm), a difference of -1 atm from our standard environment. In the ocean we have about 1 atm more for each 10 meters of depth, so 30 m is about 4 atm, a difference of +3 in relation to sea level.

i dont know these units but i think i get it

ReCursing ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 15:54:02 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Atmospheres - how much pressure the atmostphere exerts on you. The weight of the air above your head.

ralusek ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:07:44 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Basically in space there is almost NO pressure. It is a vacuum, meaning that it is virtually devoid of all matter. The ocean is the opposite, as water has a higher density than air and the density increases significantly as you go deeper.

TL;DR:

Space: no pressure

Ocean: high pressure

Tehbeefer ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:05:33 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

1 atm is approximately 15 pounds per square inch or 100 kiloPascals (1 kilopascal = 1000 newtons per square meter), so in space there's only 1 atmosphere difference in pressure compared to at 150 meters deep (~500 feet), where the pressure would be about an extra 15 atmosphere's worth of pressure, i.e. an extra 225psi / 1550kPa. Sperm whales apparently dive up to 7,382 ft (2,250 meters), which would be 228,000kPa / 3300psi.

ValeK_ ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:58:36 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yea. It's a he'll of a lot more pressure seen as space is a vacuum. (Huge pressure compared to huge negative pressure.) The tech would need to be completely different structure wise

idislikechairs ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:54:04 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Can't find anything yet. They could even use this method to find where great white sharks give birth. They can use a tracker but a lot of information is left out.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ MordorsFinest ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:02:13 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

all a tracker can do is tell you where it goes. When we sent the Mars rover or all those other probes they have cameras, listening devices, sediment analysis.

You'd think they'd have little drone submarines by now to do this sort of research, though nowadays naval warfare is kind of obsolete so theres no reason to invest in it.

TroAhWei ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:37:54 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Did you just say naval warfare is obsolete?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ MordorsFinest ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:38:51 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Absolutely, when was the last time two battleships or subs fought since WW2 besides possibly the Falklands war?

Tehbeefer ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:59:53 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Operation Praying Mantis, for one. Battleships are obsolete, USS Iowa was retired in 1990. Submarines are extremely important because of espionage and nuclear missiles.

Operation Praying Mantis

holy shit a whole naval battle between the US and Iran...Iranian navy got reckt worse than I did in this thread

Tehbeefer ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:19:20 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, the whole operation was diplomacy. With explosives.

A few months later, we accidentally shot down an airliner of theirs. Not that trying to end the Iran-Iraq war wasn't a good thing, but it sure seems like we goofed in the process. Sorry, Iran.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ MordorsFinest ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:24:35 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

says here its one of 5 naval engagements the US has been in since WWII

TroAhWei ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:08:42 on July 14, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Okay. You do realize that a country with regional power aims at a minimum is building a blue-water navy, complete with fully functional aircraft carriers, right? Hint: those are most certainly naval. We also haven't done an opposed amphibious landing since Korea - why don't we do away with marines while we're at it? Sorry if I'm coming across as a snarky dick, but the idea of a military is to be ready for war. The fact we haven't used our navy in actual combat is a success, not a failure.

idislikechairs ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:12:44 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

True. Sending radio waves underwater is a lot harder. You have to use a lower frequency. I guess at those depths you would lose the signal.

wwwhistler ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:47:50 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

a sensor that would tell when a whale breaches and a data burst to a receiver should do it. but it would need a pretty good battery to last a year.

idislikechairs ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:59:42 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Unless you had some hydro powered battery but it would probably be too big and make the whale look like a steam punk cartoon. Wouldn't want to be the guy who had to edit a year's worth of footage either.

Tehbeefer ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:24:22 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I think oil companies are interested in this too. I'm a little surprised we don't have them already, but it's probably because of comm issues. VLF radio might put allow you to give instructions to the probe, but it wouldn't be able to talk back, best option might be a tethered buoy following along on the surface. Power might also be a problem, but that might be solvable with an RTG.

Adonous ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:45:43 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yes there is a difference. Space is a vaccum, there is no external pressure, where as the depths youd expect a sper whale to go to are several times the atmospheric pressure felt on the surface.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:42:57 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:39:23 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They dive to around 2000m beneath the surface, a tiny camera wouldn't survive the crushing weight of water above. You'd need to put it inside a big and well armored box (which would be heavy) to survive that depth, which would obstruct the whale's swim.

Most of the footage we have of sperm whale's in the deep comes either from research submarines or cameras that were strapped to whales but at a shallower distance than where they can actually dive.

GimmeCRACK ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 17:38:37 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

For how many humans have died for medical science. Would I be wrong in just drilling the cameras into the whale? Anchor em into their bones so they cant break off or move. We could make a terminator whale basically, tons of lights, cameras, just doss em up , start drilling in, and let em free. He will be in pain for a fe weeks I assume, but its for science. We wont even have to redrill, we can attach new mounts/cameras/gps trackers to the pre drilled rods inserted all over em. God science excites me

[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 18:17:38 on July 12, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Would I be wrong in just drilling the cameras into the whale? ... Anchor em into their bones

Affirmative.

Though maybe a subdermal implant that then shoots spikes out once embedded to anchor it, assuming the skin is tough and that would actually hold, might be acceptable. To a whale I guess that'd be like getting a flu shot. Then the spikes can retract on a timed release mechanism and then wait for the implant to work its way out. Unless the whale grows some sort of callous or scar around it that still holds it in... o_o

Miles down in the ocean? Ha ha. Regardless of this, the camera wouldn't stand the pressure, a fucking submarine can't stand the pressure of that much water weight.

Hyperion1144 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:30:17 on July 13, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

We were sending manned subs deeper than that decades ago. It may not be cheap, but it is totally possible.

BTW, why are so many boats polluting the ocean? All that exhaust going down there to kill the wildlife. Imagine spewing that in the air, that would kill everyone. But it's ok in the water because we don't see the pollution footprint, eh?
