1v1 variant concept: Shoot or Spare

I was bored over Christmas and decided to try to create an interesting 1v1 variant of SH. Iโ€™ve been toying with the idea of a game where you must determine whether you are to cooperate or compete with your opponent. Here is what Iโ€™ve come up with.


Rules:

There are three envelopes: 2 liberal, 1 fascist. Each player draws one, and the other is left unopened.

There are no elections. Each player takes turns drawing two policies, enacting one and discarding the other face down.

All presidential powers are ignored.

The person who plays the 5th fascist policy must choose to shoot or spare their opponent. If they shoot, the game is over (see win conditions below). If they spare, play proceeds until either the liberal or fascist board is filled up.


Win conditions:

  • If the liberal board fills up, the liberal(s) win.

  • If the fascist board fills up, the fascist wins. If there is no fascist, both players lose.

  • If a liberal shoots a liberal, both players lose.

  • If a liberal shoots a fascist, the liberal wins.

  • If a fascist shoots a liberal, the fascist wins.


I am looking for general feedback, focusing especially on balance and game theory. In particular, I am considering changing the rules so that shooting your opponent does not end the game, and you must finish the game by drawing more cards as usual.

Sounds interesting! I suggest when the 5th fascist policy is put on the board, the other person take the shot, since the one putting it is likely fascist anyway. In general it needs a lot more balance but I really like the concept.

I think the balance is off: the liberal has 50% chance of winning by shooting and the fascist 100. Maybe you could make it so the fascist is not allowed to shoot and has to act picking the spare option.

He needs to count cards to avoid getting sniffed out while discarding blues. I think there are some opportunities for real mind games if the liberal chooses to lie about the cards he receives.

That said, I agree, Iโ€™d like to add a guessing/player reading element to the fascist as well. I donโ€™t know if I agree with there being 2 of each envelope, because then shooting is a 67% chance of winning.
