When I was ten we didn't have anything to say, but with good reason. We were total assholes! Blowing up old ladies's mail boxes with firecrackers, tying record-tape across the street, snowballing old ladies houses, and fucking terrorising those who we deemed "scary" with endless ding dong ditching, and polystyrene against their windows.

isteppedinpoop ยท 225 points ยท Posted at 22:16:28 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
There is at least one person in every neighborhood. They believe they actually have a say about what happens on the sidewalk and street in front of their home.
I live in a cul-de-sac like this. I have a neighbor that likes to have phone conversations out loud while pacing on the sidewalk around the court. Yes it's slightly annoying, but he is on city property in the daytime. I have no right to tell him what to do unless he is on MY property.
slothscantswim ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 05:00:56 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
You can always ask people to change behavior. That is certainly within your rights. They have no obligation to comply but, you know, mores and folkways and all that, I'd file this under "being neighborly." Then again if it's not that bothersome I'd likely not bother saying anything either. I think that's a problem in the way a lot of Americans, Westerners really, think about social interaction. "Am I within my right to force compliance?" It's not a bad thing but it seems so impersonal. I like the idea of doing favors, asking for favors, knowing someone doesn't have to do shit but does anyway, to be decent. Man I am pretty high.

My city doesn't, actually. Not that he is loud enough to warrant it anyway.
Once when a busybody neighbor called the cops on me for party noise, (it was just 6:30 PM and the sun was still shining) and the cop told me this. "The city has no noise ordinance, but a citizen can personally press charges for disturbance. This means they would have to show up to court. Most people don't bother after I say that, but these people are retired and have nothing else to do. You might want to turn it down to avoid a big THING."
What made me mad though was the neighbor never asked be to turn it down. They just immediately called the cops. They could have just asked. I'm not a dick, I'd have just said "Oh sorry, didn't think it was that load. I'll turn it down a bit and close the back door so you don't hear it."

I actually forgot part of the story. Like I said this was a Saturday and not quite evening yet. It was still sunny out. They live behind me, they had walked around the corner to my front yard and were yelling at some of my guests in the open garage. They said they already called the cops AND we need to turn the music OFF NOW! Not down. OFF! The main person they were yelling at was my friends son. Only 15 at the time. Didn't even ask if he lived here. Just beamed on him for no reason.
They were nuts but thankfully they moved.

I work 3rd shift and when the neighbors let their untrained yapping rodents out at 7 am till 1am, it gets hard to get sleep. Not to mention when I let my pups out, there's go ballistic with the barking and trying to tear through my wood fence. After asking multiple times for them not to leave them out all day, I checked with an officer. It's some sort of noise ordinance if you leave an animal barking outside your home for more than an hour. It took 3 noise complaints before these fucks (3 18yr old college girls) to start taking responsibility for the animals that the were "responsible" enough to have.

I've seen a few places that will have a little gazebo a dozen yards or so away from a building entrance, which seems like the best option to me. Covered, reasonably close by but still out of the way.

I always feel bad because our campus banned smoking, so it's either walk about 20 minutes to get into a residential area, or just smoke on the sidewalk on the edge if campus :/
Sheerardio ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:04:33 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
And that sucks. I might disagree with your decision to smoke, but it's not exactly hard to accommodate you in a way that doesn't inconvenience you or anyone else so my opinion is moot.

angrydeuce ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:38:43 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, these rules are often made by non-smokers that don't realize that it's not going to stop shit. My fiance works in a hospital and there is a big inner courtyard that they used to let people smoke in but of course they banned smoking on all hospital grounds so that totally curbed the smoking!
Except it didn't, now people just have to drag themselves across a 4 lane road to smoke on the other side of the street, and when I say drag, I literally mean drag themselves as patients will often be seen out there, in a hospital gown, dragging an IV pole behind them, across the street to smoke. It's a wonder that someone hasn't been killed yet. Plus there's no ashtray or anything over there since there's no official smoking area so guess where all the butts go?
If inconvenience was going to stop people from smoking, then smoking would have died out 20 years ago when it was banned pretty much anywhere indoors. I don't think there's anything wrong with giving people someplace to smoke in peace.

ehh, that's a tricky one. I remember when California voted to ban indoor smoking, and the main argument was the high levels of secondhand smoke that bartenders and servers were exposed to which, y'know, is kind of a fair point. Better to share an open air space, where there's no ventilation issues and the only person's health you're risking is your own.

As someone who has recently quit smoking (again), you're completely right.
I look down on people that can't quit smoking. It's the simplest thing on the planet. Yeah there are cravings, yes your brain convince you that it's not the right time to quit, or that you should have just one more, but don't.
It's the easiest thing in the world to do because you don't have to do anything. It's the same as not lifting up a car over your head. You're not doing it.

You clearly misunderstand the dangers of smoking. It's not some magical poison cloud that gives you insta-cancer. It's years of doing it many times a day that causes the inflammation and congestion. In this regard, it's absolutely no different than the car exhaust you occasionally smell while walking on a sidewalk.
Shall we legislate a 30-foot distance between sidewalks and roadways?

And cologne causes instant asthmatic response in some people. As with your "many" who are hypersensitive to smoke, in sorry they have to deal with that, but it's not my problem. I'm happy to take reasonable steps to avoid inconveniencing others, but your characterization of that habit or any other as "pathetic" betrays your disinclination to accept "reasonable" as the thing I'm obliged to offer.
By the way, denying that vehicular exhaust (and it's incumbent smog) is significantly more harmful to all of us is simply ignorance.

Why does having a camera mean it was a setup? Have you been living under a rock? Everybody has cameras, all the time. I have a personal phone, a work phone, and a work tablet, all 3 of which are usually with me. I literally have three cameras with me everywhere i go. And that's if I'm alone! If I'm with others they all have their own cameras too.

I always enjoy seeing both sides so thank you for the input here's my personal anecdote:
For a few years in college I lived in an apartment a few blocks from the popular bars downtown. It would get quite hot in the Fall so I'd need to keep the window open which was right by a nice large rock outside that the drunk people who walked back from the bars at 2am seemed to really enjoy sitting on while having fights with their special other or friend.
I worked and did classes in two tough majors and desperately needed my sleep so it wasn't the most enjoyable thing to be woken up at 2 in the morning to two people yelling at each other.
What was fascinating is that I had the chance to try both approaches. I would mostly walk out and say something along the lines of "hey I know you're in a public place but my window is right up there and I really need to get my sleep to be rested by 6 in the morning". Some times I'd wake up a bit pissed and be more like the lady in the video.
What's amazing is how effective the first approach was and how the aggressive approach almost never got me what I wanted. Most people don't want to be annoying, but they also don't want to be yelled at.
The point is the kids have every right to play there and the lady has every right to speak her mind, but the lady is the one that looks the fool in the end because even after her ~45 years of life she still doesn't have it figured out that there's a tactful way to approach a situation to make your point.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:01:11 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Absolutely. My response was to the idea that she had no reason to expect anything other than to have to listen to noisy kids in front of her house. She handled it very poorly, but her motivation was something we can all relate to.
*I hope she's not 45. I'm over 40 and she looks ancient to me. :-)

Lady didn't realize that the first few feet of your property is owned by the government for the purposes of potentially installing a sidewalk, and public infrastructure (phones, cable TV, power lines, etc). And thought she could tell them to go away because they were bound to end up on her curb.

I had some kids playing ball in the street in front of my house a few weeks ago. My wife works graveyard at the hospital and they were waking her up. I grabbed some sodas from the fridge and offered them to the kids while asking nicely if they would play somewhere else and they were happy to. They even apologized about making noise, which is silly because it was a Saturday afternoon.
So yeah, honey and vinegar. Kids are usually pretty cool if you aren't an asshole to them. It's almost like they are real people or something. They should flaming poo bag her porch.

As long as you don't try to trample over them and treat them like retards all the time, they can be chill as hell. The only problem with them (from my experience) is that they don't like to actively solve problems, they just stick to their guns most of the time. Although it usually isn't a problem at camp because they don't want to upset the councillors and put them in a shitty mood.

I've spent enough time in /r/legaladvice to lose all faith in this regard. One of the last posts I saw was (paraphrasing) "A toddler that I don't know came into my home while I was taking a shower, and was bit by my dog. Now her parents are suing me for $5000"
Like the dude was in the shower, a little kid belonging to total strangers opened the frontdoor & was walking around his house, was nipped (iirc he said it wasn't a bad bite or anything) by his dog (I mention the shower because he lives alone & had no idea the kid was in his house until hearing blood-curdling screams). After the mom came & got the kid he thought everything was cool only to get a letter in the mail about being sued a few days later
They said the $5000 was for medical expenses, then he found out the parents didn't even take their kid to the hospital....the world is lousy with opportunistic scumbags

Why wouldn't he just take that letter to Child Protective Services (or equivalent agency) as evidence of the parent's neglect for their child? That whole story sounds ridiculous.

It's not as nice as you would think. I had a similar issue as this lady, although I wasn't an idiot like her, she did handle it very poorly. First, realize that kids do not talk, they scream. While not the worst thing, it does get quite annoying when they decide to sit right in front of your house and do it. Think of anything annoying(loud bass on a car, loud motorcycle exhaust, revving motor, nickelback...)and then imagine them doing right in front of your house for hours day after day, it can be obnoxious. Also consider the fact that people move to cul de sacs specifically because it is a dead end. They don't want traffic or passerbys or to deal with people, that's why they bought at a dead end(and spent a considerable amount of money to do so). In my case, my house was behind their goal and surprise surprise, my new truck and car were constantly getting hit by the ball, the ball was constantly going into my yard, into my flower beds crushing them. When not actively playing, they would lean up against my vehicles/sit in the bumper. There was always garbage too. Everything from hot pocket sleeves and juice boxes to candy wrappers. I also has stakes marking my driveway for the plow, which they would pull out for sword fights and discard when done.
[deleted] ยท 81 points ยท Posted at 22:19:38 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*
I always thought cul de sacs were defacto for children. Like, that's the only reason you would ever move to one. Who doesn't expect children on a cul de sac?
If you want peace and quiet you live somewhere rural or near the edge of a town.
A_Filthy_Mind ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 07:33:05 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Yep. We just moved to one for that reason, less traffic and the ability to play in the street a bit. It's been great, last two weeks several families have all been coming out with their little kids to let them play together.
Slammybutt ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 04:16:54 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Ed, Edd, and Eddy lived in a cul de sac. I figured they were a giving also.
Justagreewithme ยท -10 points ยท Posted at 03:52:34 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Lots of people don't. Cul de sacs are not for children, they are so vehicles can easily turn around when they reach a dead end. I don't know who buys a home with the expectation to have your kids play in the roadway, I was raised specifically not to play in the road. Parks and backyards are for children.
mike45010 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 07:26:45 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Vehicles wouldn't need to turn around in the first place if they didn't build the cul de sac? You would jut have one large street that either loops around back to the front or goes out the other side of the neighborhood?
Justagreewithme ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 08:02:35 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Well that's part of it. They serve several purposes, which is achieved by first limiting vehicle traffic. By not making it a thru street or loop, less people will drive down there. This reduces traffic, reduces the speed of traffic, which reduces noise, pollution and promotes privacy. It also provides safety, as there is no thru traffic, people that don't live there stand out to those that do. It also helps with police response as there is only one exit. These safety features all all achieved simply by making it a dead end. The round "cul de sac" part is simply so vehicles can turn around at that dead end.

Slammybutt ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 04:16:13 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Sounds like if you approached them in a cool collective manner and began teaching them about others property and how to treat it, then they wouldn't be assholes. Joke around with them, play a few minutes of 'swords' or soccer and let them know you don't like them leaning on your car. Hell, go buy a cheap ass bench if you don't wanna bring it up to them in person. The screaming probably won't go away, but ask them to move the goal facing their house. As far as the trash you can either teach them about responsibility, or go buy a cheap trash bin an place it next to the bench.
Like a couple other people mentioned above, if you treat them like real people they will respond like real people.

It's a cul de sac...kids have always played in cul de sacs and dead ends. I'm sorry your childhood was lacking in play time and fun. You're not too old to experience some good cul de sac soccer or kick ball. You should join them. Maybe that stick will fall out of your butt.

How did you deal with those rascals?
Justagreewithme ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 04:02:39 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
It took a long time, I tried asking nicely not to sit on my truck and to try not to hit it etc. It didn't really work. They would try for 5 mins and as soon as I went inside they would go back to whatever they were doing. At one point my side mirror was broken off so I got fed up and filed a LOT of police complaints. In the end, they forgot/were too lazy to take home a basketball hoop they had rolled out and it was on my grass. I called police to report illegal dumping on my property. Me and the police sergeant loaded it in my truck and I brought their new hoop to the dump.
smixton ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 15:28:50 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Probably could have talked to the parents who were most likely unaware it was causing one of their neighbors problems.
I would rather someone tell me there is a problem and give me the opportunity to correct it instead of throwing my children's toys in the dump. The parents were hurt by that as much, if not more, than the kids were because they spent money on the hoop. The kids probably never connected the dots as to why their hoop was missing. Want to fix a problem, address it head on.

I'll say this, I like seeing kids out playing in parks and stuff but honestly when its right outside your window its absolutely fucking annoying. I can't speak to this scenario. But I live in a condo which has a small drive for each of the for units who then have their own driveway. Not only is it absolutely annoying to have to sit and listen to half a dozen kids sit outside and play basketball and screaming for hours but they and their parents give zero fucks about the other neighbors vehicles parked outside when playing soccer or fucking field hockey or basketball. I've had balls hitting the walls, my door, and my car. It's fucking absurd that I should be expected to have to move my car or my guests cars because these people don't care. There's an enormous field not a minutes walk from here and a huge sports complex maybe ten minutes walk But no, right there five feet from where I sit. Mom doesn't give a shit about the neighbors. My main point against this shit is that this is where I live. The neighbors live. And the parking is for cars and kids that want to play games have a huge number of choices for doing so.

If she keeps trying to take other people's property... yeah.
But the point of calling the cops wouldn't be too have her actually arrested/charged... but to have an authority figure tell her to her face than she's wrong, that she is breaking the law, and that she needs to stop it... and that the kids are not doing anything illegal.

Love listening to children argue. Hilarious. When one would make a comment and be unable to hold back the laugh, and the whole group would chuckle, I'd crack up. Also, this lady just made herself the target of passive aggressive kid behavior for the next 5 years.

In a day and age when technology runs our lives, it really is terrible that someone would try to discourage kids from playing outside. They should be encouraged! Not yelled at!
abigfatphoney ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 02:00:32 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*
God this lady is such a bitch. I'll bet if she had asked nicely that they play further from her house, there's a way bigger chance they would have moved. Also, if you get that upset about children playing in the street in front of your house, you probably shouldn't have bought a house on a cul de sac.
There's just so much about this that pisses me off. Near the beginning when the kid says, "My mom told me to film you," that makes it pretty obvious that this lady has been giving the kids problems for a long time.
Also, I love how at the end the kid yells "Mother...... FREAKING yes!" Like, he knew he was going to show the video to his mom, so he didn't want to swear.

๐๏ธ SecretSnack ยท 29 points ยท Posted at 20:23:28 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*
My brother has an interesting theory about that. He says in preindustrial societies elders are the teachers, imparting skills to the children while the parents are out hunting or farming or whatever. Such societies have close-knit, meaningful bonds between young and old. It's not like that in the modern western world. There is less attachment between youth and elders here, so there is less respect, mutually. Old people are more likely to be seen as scolds than mentors. Increasingly that is their tragic role.

Good point. But keep in mind that with lifespans increasing, elders tend to be more burdensome than their forebears. Our elders are older. Medicine wards off what would traditionally kill them.
We agree old people have much to teach. Unfortunately working against them is the increasing pace of change -- as much as they can teach us, it's easier than ever to see their teachings as ancient and irrelevant. Sad indeed.
OFF_THE_DEEP_END ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 23:09:41 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Who decides what's relevant? I wish I could say that people used their own head to decide what's relevant in their own lives. That seems like common sense. But today people are told what's relevant. They are mere consumers of ideas. If we're told that old people are not relevant, then maybe we just accept that. Or maybe not.
Either way, it's framing the issue, and it becomes a societal issue that's cut off from our practical day-to-day life. And that makes it impersonal and easy to just follow the protocol and procedure for "dealing" with aged people. The battle for truth is lost before it starts in that case.
I'd argue that old people don't need to be dealt with. They're people and they deserve the basic level of consideration that we all deserve. They may be a little slower, or a little less capable, but they're still people and have a lot to offer. It's not fair to say they can only provide under very limited circumstances. Such thinking is not at all creative and a symptom of the disposable "plastic" culture that thinks if a thing is done with and achieved its immediate and apparent purpose, it just goes into the bin and it's gone from the universe. People aren't plastic and disposable at any age. But the modern message would argue that we are, and YOU better make yourself useful. It's one of those types of argument that seem moral at first glance, but when you peel back the layers it's rotten at its core.
It's a scary thought that we can classify people based on comparison to only the best of the best. And that's what's going on with our culture. We're constantly measured up and found lacking. So we have no problem when authority tells us to put our heads down and work harder. Then we look at old people and see them as a burden because if we, the young, can't make the cut, what chance do they ever have? It's all a problem of perception and not taking life at face value.
Another way to look at it is that people call foul when there's class struggle in society. And it's the elders that made it into the ruling class in their lifetime, however they made it there, that hold a disproportionate amount of power. With one phone call they can launch armies and police and kill without justification or consequence. How powerful is that? It's beyond what any common person even imagines as having power.
And the young rebel against them with their own ideology of fairness and distribution of power so there's more of a chance for living a good life with a job and rights and whatnot. In that fight, you can bet there's respect for the elders because it's a necessary respect for your enemy. What does that tell you about people though? Where's the respect for just your ordinary elder? What does it say about the young that they can give respect, as in, it's not impossible for them, and they choose only to give it to the ones that mistreat them? Did they just make a choice that rich old elders are relevant, and the ordinary elder is invisible? Or was it what they were told to do?

There was this crazy guy, mid 40's and liked to wear tank tops, who lived across the street from a public youth soccer field in my home town. Always yelling at kids to go home because they were too loud and stuff. One day he was working in his garage when a parks league soccer game was going on across the street. A ball was kicked out and it rolled about midway up his driveway, so the guy walks out with this huge carpenter's nail and starts stabbing the ball till it's flat and he throws it back towards the field. All of this in front of the stunned kids, parents, and referees. Cops came and had a talking to with him. I never know what exactly happened with that, but from that day forward he became a local legend named "The Slasher." Pretty sure his house got egged a lot.

People like this is why I think the idea of "respect your elders no matter what" is bullshit. I'll respect you as long as you're acting respectful. You don't get a free pass to act like an asshole just because you're old. If the kids were acting in a way that was causeing damage to her property, she should have gone and spoken with their parents about it. If she was just annoyed with the noise they were making, she should have gone and spoken with their parents about it. She should not have put her hands on a child that was not hers. These days that could be considered assault.

I can understand why she doesn't want the kids setting the net up in front of her house. Balls come flying and hitting her stuff... I get that. But it's a public street, and if the kids haven't actually hit her property, she can't say anything.
I had kids play baseball in the cul de sac at my last place. I had to shut that shit down after the second time my 240z got pegged.
ParadiseSold ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:45:01 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
The kids said they were playing kickball, and the reason the net was there was so that it wouldn't hit her house. If they put the net on the other side of the court, the ball would have gone towards her yard every time they kicked it.

Every neighborhood has a person like this. They think they are king/queen of the neighborhood. I once lived in a neighborhood with a person like this. She would attempt to tell people what to do. Luckily there was no HOA. She was having some major landscaping done to her back yard and the landscaping crew decided they needed to use a bobcat for some work, but they could not get into her backyard because of a fence. She told them to take the bobcat into her backyard by driving through the neighbor's back yard. in the process, they destroyed part of their lawn. Luckily, the neighbor was home to witness the damage. When the landscaping crew went on their lunch break, he went over and removed the master key, seated in the engine compartment, and placed a massive chain and lock around the wheel housing. When the crew came back, they could not use, or even physically move the bobcat. When police arrived, and stories were sorted out, this lady was placed in handcuffs for acting like she did not have to listen to the police. There was some kind of lawsuits filed against her and the landscaping company. He won both cases. She was less apt to act like she had any authority after that.

Who would pass up a chance to play soccer with these awesome kids? She can't control her dog's barking, so she tries to bully the kids into leaving because she thinks they are an easy target. No wonder she's so miserable... her communication skills suck, and she doesn't see a great opportunity when it lands in her front yard.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:44:27 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
These people are so weird. You see them all the time. It's like they don't have and have never head any form of power or influence over anyone and at random times they lose it and try flexing non existent power over kids doing perfectly normal things. It's like, mind your business. If I were their parent and saw this the conversation would be "Leave my kids along", she would bitch about playing in a cul de sac being against the law, "Call a cop". Just a bunch of grouchy bullshit.

I'm really impressed with how smart these kids are. I've been teaching kids in South Korea for a few years, and maybe I don't appreciate their wit because they're not speaking my native language, or maybe the kids here just aren't that bold and witty to talk to an adult like this, but I was really surprised. These kids really handled this well. Their parents should be proud.

This is probably racist or stereotypical of me, but I'd imagine that western kids are more assertive? Like, respect for elders isn't as emphasized in the US, and that might influence these kids' outspokenness.

This reminds me of this one time a few years ago when I heard my next door neighbor yelling at a few kids in our cul de sac. They were throwing a football or something similar and having a good time but my neighbor was being an asshole about it. He was ranting and raving.
I was watching from my second floor window and noticed he had a grill lit up in his backyard. He was grilling some steaks and corn on the cob. I always have loved my corn on the cob grilled but when I opened my window I smelled the most wonderful aroma ever. He was cooking with charcoal and some kind of wood chips.
You see, I have always used a propane grill because I thought that charcoal would be too difficult to control the temperature. I did a little research and found that charcoal grilling is actually quite simple so I went to Wal-Mart to get a cheap charcoal grill and some coal. While I was at the store I found a good grilling cookbook so I got that also. This book had many good recipes and I was excited to try a few of them out.
On the way home from Wal-mart I called my wife to tell her about the grill and the new recipe I was going to try and before I could get a word out I noticed she was crying. I asked her what was going on and she said she had a bad day at work and would tell me about it when I got home. When I got home she was laughing and surprised me by having dinner ready. She said she really had a good day and it was a joke to keep me from suspecting she had such a wonderful dinner ready. This is why I love her so much and I will always remember that day because it is the little things in life that make it so good.

Am I the only person who doesn't immediately think "Yeah, fuck that lady! What a bitch"? I don't think she was in the right to try to stop those kids from playing, or even all that mature herself, but I honestly just feel kind of bad for her. I'm hesitant to believe that the only thing she was upset about was kids playing by her house. I'm not saying she was in the right, but...

onse ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:55:24 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I agree, I'd be a bit annoyed too if kids were kicking the ball towards my house when they could put the goal literally anywhere else. Obviously she went about communicating this the wrong way but I don't think her concerns were totally baseless.
ParadiseSold ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 21:51:56 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
they were playing kickball. You pitch toward the net, and then the ball goes off in the other direction uncontrolled. Putting the net in front of her yard was the best way to make sure the ball didn't go into her yard, which the kids said a few times when they said "that's the point of the net" a hundred times.

You know what, FUCK kids screaming bloody murder all day long. My sons are grown now but when they were kids I always told them to tone it down when they were in our own yard playing and screaming like idiots. The best way for this woman to have gotten rids of the kids was to try and play the game with them and insist on hanging around like she was one of them. They would move their noisy asses to another location quick. Kids don't give one shit about anything that doesn't suit their own best interests at the moment unless they have had real parents teaching them real life skills.
I do not agree with the way this woman handled the situation and she needs some basic life skills of her own. But fuck having to listen to screaming kids all day. Unless you work in a daycare you shouldn't have to. Also, want to bet the parents got tired of listening to their shit and told them to go play in the street?
ParadiseSold ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:42:55 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

When you have started arguing with kids using the same tactics they use, you have lost.
Lady: "You're not allowed to be here"
Kids: "You're not allowed to be here"
Lady: "No, you're not allowed to be here"
Kids: "If we're not allowed to touch you're property, why are you allowed to touch ours?" Lady: ......."uh...I'm not touching your property"
Congratulations you have been outsmarted by a 5 year old in a basic logic argument.

Thats not what I took from this.
I take that view b.c being fat is a choice. Its a choice to be lazy, to over indulge and to live a disgusting unhealthy lifestyle at the expense of others. Sometimes the expense is only in small subtle ways- like taking up more space. Other times its more overt like the increased burden they put on the public services and healthcare sectors. . . That part wasn't due to this video.
The obese have chosen to be fat. Its a choice, more often a series of choices. But always a choice. They can't break the laws of physics.

Now I know you're one of those losers from the fatpeoplehate subreddit. I bet you were/are bullied and you like to talk big on the Internet huh?
Also let me explain. In no way did I say you are literally hitler. That's you trying to sprinkle some dank memes all over this argument (as if this isn't ridiculous enough). I explained that close minded thinking; viewing something from only one side and with no other alternatives is hitler level thinking.
See if you weren't such a hateful person you could probably understand things a lot quicker since you wouldn't be angry all the time.

I'm probably in better shape than you. Don't worry though, I don't act superior to people over the Internet since I'm not half as self conscious as you. Unlike you I look at people as they are and I try not to immediately hate everything. Some day you'll grow up friend. Everyone is angsty at some point in life.
But really, bullying people on an Internet forum hiding behind a screen name? How immature can you get.

Yes because I must justify myself to you. N Ty, it's the Internet I don't take it that seriously. Don't believe me if you don't want to, I know what I am and I have a pretty good idea of what you are.
I like to keep my semi-anonymity relatively safe. Personal life and all, something that doesn't exist for you it seems.

Where were the kids' mother? Seriously. That old bat was acting that way because she's older, hell, she even says it. If someone had pulled that with one of my kids, I would have been out there so fast heads would have spun.
Here's the thing, maybe she has a point, but she's behaving just like the 11(?) year olds she's arguing with. They could have maybe moved the net to the other side, if she had asked nicely maybe they would have.
A cul de sac is sought after by a LOT of families for shit like this. It's a low traffic place where kids can play on their bikes and shit, if this woman is too old to remember that, and she thinks she has a right to tell someone else's kids what to do when they're not hurting anyone, she needs to move.

Trishlovesdolphins ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:51:06 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Maybe, but either way, I think that this woman would have responded to another woman. Women who behave like this are more than likely going to respond worse to a man. She's already said that the kids should listen to her because she's older. I don't think it's an unfair assumption to think she'd have an argument with a man because she's a woman and he needs to do what she wants.
This wasn't a statement on the roles of men/women and their children as much as I doubt that woman would have backed down to anyone but a cop or a mother.
Source: all my experience with women who behave this way.

Good for these kids, man, people like this shouldn't get away with this kind of crap. We had a neighbor across the street growing up that would call the cops anytime we did something like this on the street. My Dad actually encouraged us to do it and even got in on some games to make a point. Didn't stop the neighbor from making the phone calls though.

they were playing kickball, and said they put the net in front of her house on purpose so that when they pitched it it would go into the net and not her yard.

Ok, as much as I know the kids are right, and the lady is wrong... it drives me absolutely bonkers how obnoxious those kids are! The lady is an idiot for stooping to their level and arguing with them too. This is stupid vs. stupid here. Why didn't the lady go knock on the door and talk to their parents, OR why didn't the kids go get their parents, OR why didn't any of them put their actions where their mouths were and called the damn cops like they all threatened.
I just think, everyone involved in this video is juvenile and need to get somebody with brains and common sense involved...

DrunkPixel ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 20:16:42 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I know the kids are acting like kids... the "juvenile" part is meant more as an insult to the woman... regardless... my point was that somebody with a level head should have been brought in (by the woman at the very least). I can only guess her husband was hiding inside the house watching from the window thinking, "Oh god, there she goes again..."

Tufflaw ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 21:48:47 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Looks like this isn't a popular opinion, but those kids were pretty damn disrespectful. The lady handled it very poorly too, if she had a real problem she should have told their folks, or asked them nicely not to put their net in front of her house so she could park her car, but there's no excuse for the kids to talk to her like that.
splaspood ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:28:46 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Her real problem was (as she says, briefly) that the kids playing out front causes her dog to go nuts (as dogs are prone to). Since that line of argument failed she instead moved to 'I want to park my car here'. You just know that she's called the cops in the past and they've told her that the kids have every right to play out there and her dog barking is her own problem... which is why she is busy arguing with a bunch of kids.
lackingsaint ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:10:39 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
She mentions the dog thing fleetingly in the middle of her argument, so I kinda call bullshit on that being her "real problem". She would've said that to begin with if that were the case; to me it seems like she just wanted the kids to go away, and at one point her dog barked and she thought she could use it as an excuse.
splaspood ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:10:19 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I feel it was fleeting because that was the problem she had raised in the past to no obvious avail. I'll see if I can find the skating videos I think involve the same kids... Dogs being antagonized by the noise seemed to be a primary complaint.
Although really I'm not sure why I care... This is some low grade freak out material ;)
Tufflaw ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 23:32:38 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I didn't hear the part about the dog. She definitely could have (should have) handled it better. I think if she'd asked them nicely to put the net somewhere else it would have gone a lot smoother. STILL the kids were being disrespectful little shits too.
splaspood ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:02:21 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
The kids were being far more respectful than I'd have expected kids to have been given the situation. That being said there is obviously a long previous history here. Kid says his mother told him to video tape so there would be evidence. I could be wrong but I believe these are the same kids from the skateboarding videos with the crazy old woman calling the kid a pedo.
Basically, I expect far more from the adult and was disappointed, and far less from the kids and was pleasantly surprised. Saying she could have handled it better is an understatement.

It can be quite obnoxious. I had a similar problem and the ball constantly went into my yard, constantly trampled my flowers-which I spent a lot of time and money on. Nobody would like their vehicle as a backdrop for their goal. They broke the side mirror off my truck and were constantly screaming. It is annoying. She handled it very poorly, but her concerns likely weren't unfounded.

So what?
Lawns aren't damaged by footfalls (especially by children) or by inflated rubber balls rolling across them. Cars are equally unharmed by inflated rubber balls rolling beneath them.
It'd be one thing if these kids were playing on her lawn wearing cleats or climbing through her car's sunroof to fish their ball out from behind the driver's seat. But they're not. What they're doing is literally harmless, and it irritates me when people start coming up with excuses to discourage or punish healthy behavior that harms no one.
If this woman is really that upset by the sight and/or sound of children playing in front of her home, there are very nice seniors-only communities all around the country where it's 55+ and kids aren't an issue. She should seriously consider relocating, as I suspect those aren't the only kids in the neighborhood and she seems allergic to them.
That's because most people are well-adjusted and mentally healthy.
chandson ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 20:22:01 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
More annoyed with their attitude. I remember being a kid and having an adult asking us to leave. It was annoying but getting into name calling, insulting the adult, accusing an adult of touching me... my parents would have laid the smack down on me for acting like that. They can play where they want, but they can also not act like turds.

I agree, I never said the adult was in the clear, but the kids certainly weren't any better. The kids were fine. They stood up for themselves.
People deserve respect when they demand it by their actions. Not when they ask for it like her. Being old is not sufficient reason to receive respect. Had she asked politely if they could please move it- they likely would have - however most likely she just started off yelling (which never deserves respect) instead of asking.
chandson ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 22:02:02 on April 23, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
And we also have no reason to believe this is the first time she's asked them to leave. The camera was primed and ready when she walked over so I don't believe this is the first time they've interacted at all.

Edit: After being informed that they were not using the net for soccer, but rather kickball, and kicking away from the house, my opinion of this situation has changed, provided this is true.
I only watched about five minutes but everyone here is sticking up for the kids. I'll agree that they were in the right and that they were quick witted for the insults, however, I feel they knew what they were doing when they were antagonizing her. They could have placed that net anywhere else, but instead chose to place it in front of her place and argue about it for 15 mins. They weren't on her yard, but I'm willing to bet that their shots won't be in the net 100% of the time.Edit: I figured I would get downvoted for stating the unpopular but obvious. My point was not that the kids should not be playing in the cul-de-sac, but rather that it was quite apparent that they were targeting her. This encounter obviously was not the first encounter that members from these two neighbors have encountered each other. They most likely had the insults already lined up, just like they knew what reaction they would get, and they were ready to film it. What this lady did wrong was not get the parents involved, which is what allows me to believe that this has happened before, with the parents either not doing anything about it or instigating it, and they are now targeting her.Of course everyone is or was a kid before, myself included. Lots of kids have had neighbors who have caused situations like this before, again, myself included. I agree that cul-de-sac's are a relatively safe and great place for kids to play sports. I know I enjoyed playing soccer, hockey, baseball, football, and basketball on them, however, I also know know that we caused our fair share of broken windows, dented cars, and torn up gardens. Difference was, we didn't purposely aim our shots to target a neighbors house. Most of those accidents were to our own family's property. That being said, I would actually be out there playing as well. I've always enjoyed backyard/street sports, and the best way to enjoy them is to not have people causing problems for you. The best way to not have people causing problems for you is to be considerate of them.Tom-ocil ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:19:41 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
So what if they aren't?
Let's say they are purposefully antagonizing her - they're doing it by playing kickball in the public street in front of her house. That's like saying I'm antagonizing my vegetarian neighbor by having a BBQ in my front yard.
chemisus ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:12:25 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Those two situations are nothing alike.
Now if you said, "That's like saying I'm antagonizing my vegetarian neighbor by moving my BBQ from in front of my house, across the street, and in front of my neighbor's house" then I would agree with you, that's exactly what they are doing. I never said that them playing in the street was wrong, just merely that they are targeting her. This has the "let's go piss people off as a prank and film their reaction" written all over it.
Tom-ocil ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:27:51 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
No, that doesn't work. Nobody hosts BBQ's in the street. Lots of kids play in the street. They may be aware that their crazy neighbor doesn't like it when they play on public streets, but that's not targeting.
chemisus ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:14:28 on April 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*
You're just summing up my response to yours.
I wouldn't say nobody hosts BBQ's in the street. I have attended block parties where the whole street/neighborhood has been shut down and neighbors put in a party. It's actually quite fun, should try it sometime.
That being said, going off of the "no body hosts BBQ's in the street", the kids were playing in the street; not in their yard. Thus, why I said the two situations are nothing alike.
I disagree, and believe that it absolutely is targeting. [Edit for clarification: If the kids were playing anywhere else in the street, it would not have been targeting. It looked like they knew what they were doing when placing the net in front of her yard though.] However, I feel you are still missing the point of my original response (which I have since edited to clarify what I meant, and why I arrived at that conclusion). I never said that the kids should not be playing in the street, and in fact, support it. I also said that I agree that the kids are in the right here. What I disapprove of is that (from the five minutes I watched) it was quite apparent that the kids were targeting her. All they had to do was place the net anywhere else, say like, in front of their house.
When you're playing a sport in a residential area, you generally don't drag your stuff over to a neighbor's house who doesn't approve of you playing there. You generally leave your stuff close to your house, usually in or in front of your driveway, and aim any projectiles either away from all houses, or at your own house. The kids dragged their net to their neighbors house, and aimed it at their yard, thus I believe it was targeting.
Again though, If there is something critical that happens after five minutes which would change my stance, please let me know.

But they are alike in that they both involve participating in an activity in the appropriate place. Block parties aside, dragging your grill out and putting it on the street in front of a vegetarian neighbors house is clearly being done to antagonize. Kids playing in the street is not.
Who says they don't live on that block? Or nearby?

I will let you know that someone else stated that they were not playing soccer, but rather kickball, and using the net to kick away from the house. In light of this information, my opinions regarding this situation have changed.
That said, to resume our coversation:
I still disagree in this comparison. There is a complete difference in doing something on your own personal property as opposed to doing something on public property. There is also a difference in doing something on public property away from your neighbors property, and doing something on public property right in front of your neighbors property. This is what I meant by "they could have placed the net anywhere else", as in, they could have placed the net anywhere else on the cul-de-sac.
I never assumed that the kids lived far away, in fact, figured they lived on the cul-de-sac as well. I doubt they would drag the net across town just to place the net in front of some lady's yard. I'm not sure what gave you the impression that I thought they didn't live in the block, as nothing I said alluded to that.

When I grew up it was more important to keep kids playing pickup sports so we wouldn't get into other things like drugs

That argument is irrelevant to my statement.
My statement does not say anything about the kids not playing in the street, in fact, it even states that they were in the right. It was about them targeting her and filming it.

They were playing kickball. they put the net in front of her yard so that when they kicked it it would go away from her house, just like she asked.

Ok, that changes things. I thought they were playing soccer (due to the soccer ball and net), and don't remember hearing anything about kickball (probably mentioned further in the video?). Thank you for informing me.

Teaching kids respect is a good thing. These kids acted like they had no respect for authority. If this was there first offense with the lady, that would be different. However I guarantee these kids have been a nuisance for a long time. Probably doing much worse things than playing in the street

These kids were respectful! They handled the situation with great maturity - they stood up for themselves, didn't do the 'ow, ow, you touched my arm, that's assault!' thing that people often do, and repeatedly assured her that they weren't there to bother her and just wanted to play. If any one of these kids were mine, I'd be very proud of them.

they probably have respect for authority, but Grimace here isn't an authority figure.

What authority? Some bitter old hag that wanted them to leave just because she didn't like the sounds of their enjoyment?

Respect should be earned and not just given, And sure give respect to an authority figure to save yourself a bad time but this woman has no authority. Also her whole issue is "you making noise makes my dogs bark" at no point did she mention a more heinous act.

Actually these kids were pretty damn respectful given the situation. They also have a way better grasp on their rights and property law than she does.
