mine are generally cat related. I work with some juniors who don't understand why you're test messages need to be glaringly obviously not real data, they all think I'm just obsessed with cats. Sounds like weebly just learned why, also gives you something unique to grep for in the logs.

Someday, you're going to accidentally send a test message to production or while the VP is demoing on your staging environment to a big client. Using cute test data is fine, but inappropriate and crass test data should really be avoided because of the risk to cause real embarrassment.
While I agree with your comment, itโs a private test environment that is never used for demoing, and only our team have access to it. We have a large demo environment which is obviously client proof, but the test environment as IP and non-public projects on it, if anyone other than our team and our technical director & CEO saw it, someone would be getting fired
that and our CEO has seen my test data and isnโt too bothered

For some reason it's the first few things that pop up in my mind when having the cursor after println!(", ready to enter a helpful debug message to demonstrate the code got here...
But we've improved validation since then so I don't think it's possible for the users to do the combination of things to cause that error. At least no one's complained about it.
I've learned to also not put swears in comments. Or commit messages. Clients are fucking nosy sometimes goddamn.

I once showed a potential client some (commented) swears in their existing public code. Ended up stealing that contract away from their existing dev team, thanks to that blunder.
My own projects have more swears than a full season of โTrailer Park Boysโ, but gotta keep professionalism at 100% for client projects.

I did this a couple of days ago. Was supposed to be a quick fix.
First, I fucked up on updating the database table, losing a field. Then everything took longer than it was supposed to, and I ended up spending a day working on it.

TIL Joey Tribbiani became a programmer for Weebly after his acting career ended.
I remember when our internal server wasn't configured properly and send dozens of my testmails containing only the word "Penis" to every of the 200k emails in the database.
Funfact: Since it contained the word "Penis" and no CSS whatsoever, it was blocked by almost every big provider because they flagged it as spam, and the openingrate was below 0,01%.
Since that day, I only test with the word "Penis".

My company has a little over 2000 public IPv4 addresses. I can't even count the number of IPs I've come across that had been blacklisted 10+ years earlier, and were still listed (I'm looking at you Sorbes).
I always wondered, like some platforms have IP bans where anyone logging in via that IP is indtabanned. Now that's great and all until someone receives an account ban because their IP was refreshed to that of another user who received the blanket ban, however unlikely that may be I'm sure it's happened... Although I'm also sure there are workarounds to avoid this.

I have a friend on Google Fiber who's gotten IP-banned multiple times from the PlayStation Network because he was assigned a banned IP by Google Fiber. It's apparently a huge PITA to get Fiber to forcefully abandon the IP lease and get a new IP.

I know this feeling all too well. I hate it. I've made multiple different forms for ANYONE but me to be in charge of sending emails. Nope.
There's like 50 layers to this as well. No one will test and confirm the emails with me regularly because "not my job" is everyone's attitude, but I can't wait and not send them until someone finally does because then the client is angry the emails are late so I feel like shit, but oh no I missed a small mistake because literally it is actually not my job to make sure the content in emails is correct since IDK what is even supposed to be in there and now the client is angry because the from email address should have been info@ not admin@ and now all their users are confused and again I feel like shit.
Don't even get me started on uploading files of data. I FINALLY got them to use an upload form for these user entry things, but I still have to troubleshoot it with them all the time.
My programming job has literally become "data and user management" on many days. I hate users.

Possibly stupid question: how do you figure out the opening rate without CSS or (I'm presuming) tracking pixels? Count the number of complaints you had?
I copied an existing code that sends emails, deleted the body and set the body to "penis". However, that code still had the addHeader() and addFooter() methods in it which I forgot to remove. It's a bit complicated to explain, but due to a number of fuckups I pulled off, there still was a tracking pixel in the footer and we could count the mails that were opened. We also were able to count the bounces (not delivered messages) because our email provider was nice like that and didn't just outright blacklist us.
So, there was a bit more in the email than "penis", but not a lot more than you could see. A bit broken HTML, that's it.

Yesterday I was flipping back and forth between a client's dev server and prod server. Wasn't paying attention. Ended up sending an invoice to a customer from the prod server that shouldn't have received an invoice. Completely panicked for 15 minutes.
I can only imagine the level of panic it would cause to send a "how yooo dooiin" message to (presumably) millions of customers.
Got busy with other things intentionally so I can put off explaining to the client that I'm a moron. Just confusion - no financial implications since invoice was created previously by client and but needed to be cancelled. But still.
Don't be like me! Deal with things right away.

The professional error message should be "Debug Message - You should not be reading this", but everyone knows everyone writes "Dicks Oak" instead.
I use either table flip (โฏยฐโกยฐ๏ผโฏ๏ธต โปโโป (for error messages) or shruggie ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ (for pretty much anything else). It's a good test that the code in question is properly handling characters outside ASCII space and shruggie is a good test that slashes, underscores, etc are being escaped properly.

Usually "test" or maybe numbers if it's a wolf fencing thing. Sometimes gibberish. All these messages are intended to be removed, so why write something longer than necessary?
If it's permanent (like an assert), I use a serious message tailored for the issue (eg, "samples cannot be empty!"). Although I don't give messages to trivial assertions because the stack trace is plenty.

You can tell I'm working on something when there's a /tmp/wrk directory filled with subdirectories named hammer, hammer2, hammer3, oops, shit, dammit, not-again, try-this, and so on.

I've only been in the industry about 5 years but I always use overly safe test messages. My first year in, a new SE uses a test message "Steve sucks". Well, it made it to production on a coca cola promotional website... Fired on the spot. Never risk it anymore.
Edit: Another classic was when Coke Rewards wanted a Twitter bot to respond to users. We tried to tell them how bad of an idea it was, but nope they pushed it through. 4chan had it reciting mein kampf in a day or so.

One developer put the error message "We're sorry, Mario, but your princess is in another castle." It was never supposed to go out. There was no way that it could get triggered. Error handling would fix it. Whelp...
A couple years ago when I was playing little big Planet on ps3, a notification showed up with some profanity. Something like "suck my ass". I got scared shitless because I thought someone hacked me (I was young Okay?). I still have no idea what that was because it was definitely no personal message, it was a system message.

mine are generally cat related. I work with some juniors who don't understand why you're test messages need to be glaringly obviously not real data, they all think I'm just obsessed with cats. Sounds like weebly just learned why, also gives you something unique to grep for in the logs.

Someday, you're going to accidentally send a test message to production or while the VP is demoing on your staging environment to a big client. Using cute test data is fine, but inappropriate and crass test data should really be avoided because of the risk to cause real embarrassment.

While I agree with your comment, itโs a private test environment that is never used for demoing, and only our team have access to it. We have a large demo environment which is obviously client proof, but the test environment as IP and non-public projects on it, if anyone other than our team and our technical director & CEO saw it, someone would be getting fired
that and our CEO has seen my test data and isnโt too bothered

It's still not fixed as I recall.
But we've improved validation since then so I don't think it's possible for the users to do the combination of things to cause that error. At least no one's complained about it.

I remember when our internal server wasn't configured properly and send dozens of my testmails containing only the word "Penis" to every of the 200k emails in the database.
Funfact: Since it contained the word "Penis" and no CSS whatsoever, it was blocked by almost every big provider because they flagged it as spam, and the openingrate was below 0,01%.
Since that day, I only test with the word "Penis".

I always wondered, like some platforms have IP bans where anyone logging in via that IP is indtabanned. Now that's great and all until someone receives an account ban because their IP was refreshed to that of another user who received the blanket ban, however unlikely that may be I'm sure it's happened... Although I'm also sure there are workarounds to avoid this.

I have a friend on Google Fiber who's gotten IP-banned multiple times from the PlayStation Network because he was assigned a banned IP by Google Fiber. It's apparently a huge PITA to get Fiber to forcefully abandon the IP lease and get a new IP.

I know this feeling all too well. I hate it. I've made multiple different forms for ANYONE but me to be in charge of sending emails. Nope.
There's like 50 layers to this as well. No one will test and confirm the emails with me regularly because "not my job" is everyone's attitude, but I can't wait and not send them until someone finally does because then the client is angry the emails are late so I feel like shit, but oh no I missed a small mistake because literally it is actually not my job to make sure the content in emails is correct since IDK what is even supposed to be in there and now the client is angry because the from email address should have been info@ not admin@ and now all their users are confused and again I feel like shit.
Don't even get me started on uploading files of data. I FINALLY got them to use an upload form for these user entry things, but I still have to troubleshoot it with them all the time.
My programming job has literally become "data and user management" on many days. I hate users.

I copied an existing code that sends emails, deleted the body and set the body to "penis". However, that code still had the addHeader() and addFooter() methods in it which I forgot to remove. It's a bit complicated to explain, but due to a number of fuckups I pulled off, there still was a tracking pixel in the footer and we could count the mails that were opened. We also were able to count the bounces (not delivered messages) because our email provider was nice like that and didn't just outright blacklist us.
So, there was a bit more in the email than "penis", but not a lot more than you could see. A bit broken HTML, that's it.

Yesterday I was flipping back and forth between a client's dev server and prod server. Wasn't paying attention. Ended up sending an invoice to a customer from the prod server that shouldn't have received an invoice. Completely panicked for 15 minutes.
I can only imagine the level of panic it would cause to send a "how yooo dooiin" message to (presumably) millions of customers.

I use either table flip (โฏยฐโกยฐ๏ผโฏ๏ธต โปโโป (for error messages) or shruggie ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ (for pretty much anything else). It's a good test that the code in question is properly handling characters outside ASCII space and shruggie is a good test that slashes, underscores, etc are being escaped properly.

Usually "test" or maybe numbers if it's a wolf fencing thing. Sometimes gibberish. All these messages are intended to be removed, so why write something longer than necessary?
If it's permanent (like an assert), I use a serious message tailored for the issue (eg, "samples cannot be empty!"). Although I don't give messages to trivial assertions because the stack trace is plenty.

I wouldn't be surprised getting "how yooo dooin" from some of the apps I have that send daily push notifs to be funny for community effect. I've gotten some super low effort pushes from them. The followup push is what makes it feel like a real mistake to me.

I few weeks ago happened something similiar with a homebanking app from a major bank in Argentina. They were testing the app, something went wrong and everyone received a message. The latin american version for โThis old gray mare, she ain't what she used to beโ. Was fucking hilarious
