cderwin15 ยท 57 points ยท Posted at 13:43:15 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

AFAIK the important part is to return 403s as 401s -- you don't want to let an attacker know the difference between insufficient privileges and unauthenticated (and of course not letting users know if a username exists via the login form). Also I imagine there's minimal benefit for making 401s 404s because it still let's the attacker know the username/password is incorrect.

That said, I'd love to hear from someone working in security if that's not true.

Edit: Just remembered you may want to return 403s as 404s so the attacker doesn't know the page exists.

Pokechu22 ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 20:04:15 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

AFAIK the important part is to return 403s as 401s --

Or return 403s as 404s in some cases - that's what Reddit does for some of the admin pages, such as /admin/creddits. The page does exist, but only admins can access it (and I think only when they're in "admin mode") - if you set up a local install of Reddit this can be verified. It's clearly listed in the routing file. It's just that its controller uses VAdmin, and VAdmin intentionally 404s when one isn't an admin.

GitHub also does this if you try to view a private repository without permission - they don't reveal the existence of the repository.

Mine only blocks proxy websites, so you have to go off-campus to download a proxy. Once you have it installed it works. I have no idea why they even bother.

If you get a $5 DigitalOcean server you can use it as a proxy with SSH. I can pull a couple dozen MBps on it usually. With promo codes and stuff you can get four free months.

Badly designed Single Page Websites?

winter_mutant ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 12:37:50 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That is such a bad idea for so many different reasons.

wagedomain ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 16:24:13 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Well, and that's okay. A 404 PAGE is not the same as a 404 Response. A lot of times there'll be code to intercept API response codes and take actions based on the results, 401 and 404 being two common ones, along with 500s. So it's likely that the error code is caught before the browser can 404 and redirects to a "friendly" branded page instead. That page successfully loads, so ... 200 response on the 404 page.

Now if the browser (as in, the Ajax calls, not the actual visible screen) never sees a 404, then yeah something funky is going on and someone SERIOUSLY overdesigned their site, but a 404 Page returning a 200 is exactly what I would expect to happen.

Zarlon ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 21:01:39 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Uhm no a 404 page should return status code 404, even if it is contains custom content. End of discussion.

wagedomain ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 23:23:35 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think you're missing a key part here. A 404 page still requires requests. Custom 404 pages are simply regular pages - the context of what's ON the page or the circumstances it was loaded are irrelevant to the status code displayed in this case.

In other words, I agree that a 404 should be present somewhere in the call stack, but a request for a 404.html should be status code 200 because it successfully retrieved the page. A 404 response while trying to load 404.html means the server couldn't find 404.html, which makes no sense.

Zarlon ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 10:33:11 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Well yea it all depends on your technology stack. If the URL in the browser says "blarf.html" and some server side web stack loads and presents 404.html without redirecting, then the response code should be 404. If it redirects to 404.html then sure, the response code for that should be 200

wagedomain ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 20:50:47 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Uh, yeah exactly. That's called a "404 Page".

Zarlon ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 08:46:27 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I might be splitting hairs or we're talking past each other here, but I would also call a page that returns status code 404 with content a 404-page. I feel that the practice of redirecting to a 200-page is bad. See cnn.com's way of handling it:

http://imgur.com/a/flUTL (notice the url and the status code)

0x68656c6c6f ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 14:07:14 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think the distinction is that a web application is a type of website that has some sort of dynamic content retrieved from a server (the web application server).

If all you are doing is displaying static HTML, CSS, and JS, this can all be retrieved from an HTTP server and you don't have a web application.

jesse0 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 16:11:52 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

IMO that needs more substantiation, as this definition would call a blog a web app, while most devs would disagree with that. I see a spectrum of sophistication, with web apps at the higher end of it.

0x68656c6c6f ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:36:23 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

What is this?

0x68656c6c6f ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:45:49 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I could see where if you had a complex, JavaScript based game that ran in a browser, you might call it a web application, even though once you download the code to run it you no longer need an internet connection.

As more and more web applications are moving code to the client, you might not need to host your own web application server, especially if you can retrieve all the data you need via APIs hosted elsewhere.

2Punx2Furious ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:36:41 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Do browsers automatically generate a 404 page?

SchaeTheBae ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 12:44:11 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The server generates the 404. Apache, for example has a default 404 page, that can be changed if need be

ahruss ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 17:44:35 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

IE used to generate a default 404 page if the one returned by the server was less than a certain size. You'll still see 404 pages with an HTML comment as filler to avoid this. The standard copy-pasta was

<!--
   - Unfortunately, Microsoft has added a clever new
   - "feature" to Internet Explorer. If the text of
   - an error's message is "too small", specifically
   - less than 512 bytes, Internet Explorer returns
   - its own error message. You can turn that off,
   - but it's pretty tricky to find switch called
   - "smart error messages". That means, of course,
   - that short error messages are censored by default.
   - IIS always returns error messages that are long
   - enough to make Internet Explorer happy. The
   - workaround is pretty simple: pad the error
   - message with a big comment like this to push it
   - over the five hundred and twelve bytes minimum.
   - Of course, that's exactly what you're reading
   - right now.
   -->
Pokechu22 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:07:14 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

ahruss ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:52:59 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I don't think it's anything malicious. I think it's just that they think that a tiny error page can't possibly give enough information to tell a user what they want to know. I don't think that's necessarily correct, but that's probably why they implemented the feature.

jtvjan ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:04:44 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

But if the page is less than 512 bytes, I doubt that your error page is more informational than Microsoft's.

It loads up a little animation that reacts to your mouse and plays music. Not sure how it works on mobile if that's what you're on.

Here is a video of it someone recorded if the site doesn't display right for you. It does a bit of parallaxing on the site with the objects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zhz3oZRzPSU

The site just seems to be for some construction company without much reason to have it.

Anyone with real understanding how to troubleshoot reads the memory dumps.

oNodrak ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 04:53:05 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

That shit is only useful if you have the WinSDK symbols installed, since the kernel level dump will be useless without it, and the small-dump file shows exactly the info on the BSOD.

So, yea, install 6gb of SDK symbols to get slightly more info in 1% of the crash cases there an ambiguous IRQ error needs to be stack traced down the call stack to find the error...

Usually 0x00000050 is enough to point out Ram Errors, and 0x000000B4 is a video error, etc.

DrRobotix ยท 144 points ยท Posted at 08:54:49 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Agreed. This really gets on my nerves. Is a simple error message so much to ask for, beyond "search for this when your computer restarts"

nermid ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 13:10:36 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Windows does dump a log file for you, but it doesn't tell you where they go. I think it's usually /Windows/minidumps or something.

Takes a lot of the urgency of "write this 18-character error message down in 5 seconds before I reboot" away, assuming your computer boots after this crash.

Orange_Cake ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 15:11:50 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Then I get the "search this error for more information: CRIT_PROC_DIED" or something.

It's like having a teenager complain about how everyone's stupid and they're so smart, specifically in situations where they're screwing things up due to their inexperience.

You see the situation happening, and it's upsetting to encounter it, but you mostly just pity the person who acts this way because they're clearly not firing on all cylinders mentally.

I'm not sure it's classic ageism. I'd say classic ageism is maybe not hiring someone who is perfectly good at a job just because they you think they're too old.

I don't think it's even regular ageism it's just taking the piss.

aflashyrhetoric ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:12:03 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I believe it is ageism because it's objectively a negative stereotype of a demographic, but it's a very inconsequential, harmless form of it. I'm not really offended by it as a millennial, but sometimes these memes hit a little too close to home; I don't like being referred to as lazy, entitled, and desperately quirky when I'm commuting 4 hours (until I move soon) daily, getting over jetlag from a recent business trip, and studying on my own time to stay ahead at my job.

But I gotta learn to laugh at myself I suppose ~

As much as I like Programmer humor, this type of lazy let's pick on millennials humor is nothing more than the same straw man every generation uses to try to make them feel better than the next generation.

Also it's something every new web designer does when he learns about it, it's part of the exploration process.

Hah, clearly I should have picked my words more carefully, because my comment is being misinterpreted. Generational stereotypes are generally wrong, and I've never been impressed by the people that use them. In my experience, the few people who've expressed them haven't been particularly kind-hearted, well balanced people.

People like that remind me of my time in high school, angry at the world and blaming people for my problems. I eventually realized I was being a dipshit and cut it out, and had the naive belief that others would too. And generally, I was right; most people do okay. There are always a few that don't though, and seem to cling to those old mental crutches.

Man, this got a bit preachy. I need some damn coffee.

They sure do!

Tier 1: $10,000 - they'll make 'at least five' martyrs, and you get a sticker for your car that says 'I put a child on the Honor Roll in Paradise'

Tier 2: $25,000 - A 10-minute meet'n'greet with the bombers before they make 'at least five' martyrs, plus the sticker, plus a mousepad with a photo of the explosion on it

Tier 3: $50,000 - You get to meet the guy who made the bomb, a personal inscription on a piece of deadly shrapnel, plus the sticker and the mouse pad.

Tier 4: $100,000 - Same as Tier 3, but you get to press the button to blow the whole thing up.

Tier 5: Your life - and you get to meet the person who paid for the bomb, and 72 virgins in paradise.

Tier 6: Your life + $100,000 - same as Tier 5, but you get to specify the gender of the virgins.

Due to the oddly specific quantities you're discussing, I'm reluctant to confirm this on a public forum.

There's nothing wrong with a tastefully creative 404 page, and I have seen a few non standard ones that are pretty creative. I interpret OP's image as specifically poking fun at the stereotypical SF startup that spends too much time trying to think of a clever error message and ends up looking foolish for trying too hard to be hip. It's exaggerated for the purpose of making the joke.

However, I agree that targeting it specifically at millenials is unfair; all generations have web developers guilty of this.

I like how easy it is to find people who have done what's said in the OP in this thread.

Justletmemasturbate ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:45:27 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Never done it myself. I primarily write API's, so my 404s have to be boring and technical. I just find it odd to get mad about other people's harmless fun.

And that's when you realize the company is big enough to hire people to design error pages that are not actually developers.

This 404 page was so awesome I've actually bookmarked it. I'm not sure what the original site is about, nor am I really interested - But this 404 page is amazing :p

Gwuc ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:41:24 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Ehh a lot of people don't know what a 404 is so its good to have a quick description thats basically you took a wrong turn. But some of them really go over the top.

Ravyu ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:34:59 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Is there a Twitter version of this so that I can retweet this to my hip Twitter friends

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:20:16 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I'm a little confused, how is it even possible to sent html like that if it's just a http response? Wouldn't it be better to just sent a miniature version of that website if it's possible to sent a response?

Why am I not surprised?

It is supposed to be for catalonian language websites. In reality it is for non spanish language websites.

When you're long past retirement age and still working, everything you don't like is a "millennial" thing.

DigiDuncan ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:45:46 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

This is going to sound really dumb, so I apologize in advance.

Why can't you just make the 404 page into the content they were looking for? Like for instance, say my personal page is a bio and a portfolio on me. Why don't I just set my 404 to that too? That way my site is never technically "down."

Maj0rMin0r ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:05:29 on October 15, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Because if you want to go to literally any other page, it is wrong. If your site is an index.html and nothing else, I suppose that is valid (though a redirect to the home page is smarter). For any other site, you will confuse users and not tell them their issue.

I did a "quirky" 404 page when I interned at a startup, but it was unique because it had some fun animations and JS effects, not because it had any annoying text on it.

aiubhailugh ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:26:08 on February 17, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You know the millennial generation predates the internet, right? e.g. They existed before 404 pages existed.

Someone seems to be either a baby boomer or a gen-x who hates millenials for doing something different. I like the silly 404 messages, grow a sense of humor.

I rather enjoy the light humor over a simple error message that means nothing really to a layman.
