I'll usually spend a day trying to figure out a solution through searching, debugging, snooping through other peoples source code, and decompiling, and if I can't after a day or two of that then I change strategies. I pretty much never post anything. So this never happens to me.
I had lots of helpful responses from posting online. Stackoverflow is great for "mainstream" stuff, but forums and mailing lists provide great answers on niche topics (or if the answer is "this doesn't exist").

Yup. But it's led to some really rewarding moments when I'm forced to break it down into smaller and smaller problems, then pursue path after failed path until suddenly, unexpectedly, it works and I feel like the only person in the world that can accomplish this particular task.

That is one of the reasons that any time I have a problem that I've asked a question about and end up solving on my own I'll amend my post with the answer for future explorers.
Depends on what that array represents. I would imagine you have to sort within a row, then evaluate the value of each row (somehow) and use that to sort by row, and do that for however many dimensions you have.
I hate to be that guy, but I'd be asking why you're trying to sort a multi-dimensional array in the first place. If the rows don't represent anything such that you can just move elements about the rows freely, you should be considering why the array isn't one dimensional.
I totally agree, I'm just approaching it as if it's some sort of requirement of an API or something. Maybe it's some sort of 2D gradient where the coordinates are encoded in the array indices, but you're trying to sort by two different components of the data to figure out how the values are spread out. Something that shouldn't be the case, but because of someone else you have to make do with what you've got.
What if you had an array containing stock data in an array, and you wanted to do something like bin by opening price, then sort by closing price within that bin?

Then you just do that, but take care to use a stable sort. You're not sorting a 2d structure there, you're sorting a one-dimensional list using different partial orderings.

Wait, now I'm actually kinda interested in this. Let's see, for a double bubble sort you'd compare an element sharing the max of the elements below and to the right- if it's bigger, you swap it with the max and repeat. I think that should result in the largest items in the bottom right, and the smallest in the to left- no, wait, a small value can be "protected" by larger ones, so that it wouldn't actually end up moving. What would be a way to get around that...

A multidimensional array is essentially an array of arrays. Sort the innermost arrays (however far down that is), then figure out your criteria for ordering those arrays and sort the second-to-innermost arrays, and so on.
Edit: unless your desired order isn't that, in which case figure out what you're trying to do first, then do it.

No, you're just sorting different types. Think of it like sorting an array of strings, except that you also want the strings themselves sorted by character (e.g. "string" becomes "ginrst").

Before writing a sorting algorithm you need to define what it means to be "sorted". If you could do that for whatever your use case is, I'm sure some application of regular sorting algorithms would help you get where you need to go.
For example, if you wanted your input to be a two dimensional array and your output to be a sorted 1 dimensional array, you could sort each row and then merge rows with part of a merge sort algorithm. If your array has more than 2 dimensions, just keep merging.

Well then obviously the row arrangement didn't matter, so the array didn't need to be multidimensional, and you wouldn't have had this issue to begin with.
It depends how you want to sort it, but if I'm assuming you want to completely randomize it, the easiest way for most languages would probably make the multidimensional array into one normal array, sort that one, and then remake your multidimensional away. There's definitely going to be better ways though.

In a Microsoft forum, someone asked how to add Copy to Folder and Move to Folder to Windows Explorer's context menu in Windows 10. One Microsoft rep said to add a new user and another one said to reinstall the operating system.
I knew they were simple registry edits in Windows 7 so I fired up Windows 10 in a VM and made the same changes. It worked! I posted the solution then got a reply from Microsoft congratulating me on having fixed my problem. WTF?
The MS MVPs are beyond useless. They're basically paid trolls that only serve to clutter up the page with party line non-answers and get in the way of people who actually know what they're talking about. I think they level up or something when they close a question as solved so you'll see the same crew of master trolls in every thread shutting things down.
We need to get this as the top response when googling "sort multidimensional array". :P
A week ago I was looking for a Hibernate thing where the first hit on google was a closed StackOverflow answer with "marked as duplicate" but no link and first comment field said "Please use google next time"... :P

Forums are full of people trying to increase their post count so have to add an opinion or response to everything. Reddit on the other hand rewards with karma which requires a more agreeable mindset. Same with Stackoverflow.

Depends on the subreddit. Some of them you can get a lot of karma if you fire off as many shitposts as possible. I've abandoned more than a few 50k+ karma accounts, know what I'm talking about. Then you post something reasonable for a change of pace and that's when the bans happen.

I ran across a scenario like this at some point recently, was searching up to see if I could fix a graphics glitch I was getting in a game that's about 5 years old. Found a thread, first post ~4 years old. I'm thinking "alright, old problem, this should be a quick fix". Spent the next 30 minutes reading this saga of many people experiencing the glitch, a fix that kind of worked for most people, and then the problem mysteriously disappearing in a game update. Queue posts on the thread 2 years later, saying it apparently broke again, the update only fixed it as a side effect, and still no actual solution.
The worst is when they just give vague responses... Like they didn't bother reading your whole post otherwise they'd be able to give you a straight answer.
So they basically keep leading you around to nowhere with more vague suggestions..
Until eventually you just reply with the same exact question from your first post and they give you the most straight answer yet!!

Be completely stumped, google a problem. Only ONE answer comes up. 2-3 page question and then realize the username... it's an ex-co-worker who posted it (whose project you took over) and nobody ever replied.

It's common that a question comes up that indicates, more than anything, that the user doesn't know what they are doing. So, just simply handing off an answer, without looking into why they think this needs to be done, can actually make the person's situation WAY worse.
And then, they blame "that asshole online" that gave them an answer without exploring why they wanted to do it.
The way you handle this is by providing the solution and adding a comment saying something like it's often a bad way to solve most problems. The reason is that even though the original poster may not have the best reason to solve it in a particular way, tons of other who stumble upon the question when googling may have legitimate reasons.
And then, they blame "that asshole online" that gave them an answer without exploring why they wanted to do it.
At least you do that. Far too often people chastise for not googling, but maybe the poster did try, and may have even put in a decent effort, but, either because of poor google-fu or lack of knowledge about the subject was never able to find any relevant answers.
And, if that's the case, the next person who comes along may very well use the same keywords as the previous poster, and googling only gets a totally useless forum post telling him/her to google it.

I had a friend look for the factorial code for python and found a stackexchange link of a guy asking and being chastised for not knowing factorial. Something like "If you don't have a baseline knowledge of the language, you shouldn't be here". That is counterproductive and a waste of space...

The problem with that is not everyone searches the same or has the same level of Google fu. There have been so many times all I was missing was the proper keyword and I would've found it, but 'just Google it' answers were no help. Because I already did, multiple times. I post questions to sites as a last resort because although they're supposed to be informative and not vague and condescending, it's the opposite
I somehow manage to run into an issue and, upon searching online fornan answer, land in the StackOverflow question that I myself createdna few months ago when I last had the problem (with no answer in sight). It's happened several times now, it's mind boggling.
I just have to say - I'm a very beginning coder and even though I only understand about 10% of the jokes posted here, I find the comments in this sub funnier than most other subs I'm in. What does that mean???

Depends on what that array represents. I would imagine you have to sort within a row, then evaluate the value of each row (somehow) and use that to sort by row, and do that for however many dimensions you have.

I hate to be that guy, but I'd be asking why you're trying to sort a multi-dimensional array in the first place. If the rows don't represent anything such that you can just move elements about the rows freely, you should be considering why the array isn't one dimensional.

I totally agree, I'm just approaching it as if it's some sort of requirement of an API or something. Maybe it's some sort of 2D gradient where the coordinates are encoded in the array indices, but you're trying to sort by two different components of the data to figure out how the values are spread out. Something that shouldn't be the case, but because of someone else you have to make do with what you've got.

That's OK, because you're not sorting a multi-dimensional array, you're just sorting all the rows which are just one dimensional sub-arrays.
It kind of comes down to how you interpret the question, if it's asking how to sort such that elements can move between the rows, that's questionable.

A multidimensional array is essentially an array of arrays. Sort the innermost arrays (however far down that is), then figure out your criteria for ordering those arrays and sort the second-to-innermost arrays, and so on.
Edit: unless your desired order isn't that, in which case figure out what you're trying to do first, then do it.

Before writing a sorting algorithm you need to define what it means to be "sorted". If you could do that for whatever your use case is, I'm sure some application of regular sorting algorithms would help you get where you need to go.
For example, if you wanted your input to be a two dimensional array and your output to be a sorted 1 dimensional array, you could sort each row and then merge rows with part of a merge sort algorithm. If your array has more than 2 dimensions, just keep merging.

It depends how you want to sort it, but if I'm assuming you want to completely randomize it, the easiest way for most languages would probably make the multidimensional array into one normal array, sort that one, and then remake your multidimensional away. There's definitely going to be better ways though.

Forums are full of people trying to increase their post count so have to add an opinion or response to everything. Reddit on the other hand rewards with karma which requires a more agreeable mindset. Same with Stackoverflow.

Depends on the subreddit. Some of them you can get a lot of karma if you fire off as many shitposts as possible. I've abandoned more than a few 50k+ karma accounts, know what I'm talking about. Then you post something reasonable for a change of pace and that's when the bans happen.

I ran across a scenario like this at some point recently, was searching up to see if I could fix a graphics glitch I was getting in a game that's about 5 years old. Found a thread, first post ~4 years old. I'm thinking "alright, old problem, this should be a quick fix". Spent the next 30 minutes reading this saga of many people experiencing the glitch, a fix that kind of worked for most people, and then the problem mysteriously disappearing in a game update. Queue posts on the thread 2 years later, saying it apparently broke again, the update only fixed it as a side effect, and still no actual solution.
The wonders of forum problem solving.

I had a similar issue. The fix used image shack screenshots and zip files hosted on the old mega upload site, both of which were deleted.

The worst is when they just give vague responses... Like they didn't bother reading your whole post otherwise they'd be able to give you a straight answer.
So they basically keep leading you around to nowhere with more vague suggestions..
Until eventually you just reply with the same exact question from your first post and they give you the most straight answer yet!!
Idk if I explained it well enough, but it's annoying.

I've seriously had the following happen:
Be completely stumped, google a problem. Only ONE answer comes up. 2-3 page question and then realize the username... it's an ex-co-worker who posted it (whose project you took over) and nobody ever replied.

This is an easy one.
It's common that a question comes up that indicates, more than anything, that the user doesn't know what they are doing. So, just simply handing off an answer, without looking into why they think this needs to be done, can actually make the person's situation WAY worse.
And then, they blame "that asshole online" that gave them an answer without exploring why they wanted to do it.

The way you handle this is by providing the solution and adding a comment saying something like it's often a bad way to solve most problems. The reason is that even though the original poster may not have the best reason to solve it in a particular way, tons of other who stumble upon the question when googling may have legitimate reasons.
I doubt this happens alot.

At least you do that. Far too often people chastise for not googling, but maybe the poster did try, and may have even put in a decent effort, but, either because of poor google-fu or lack of knowledge about the subject was never able to find any relevant answers.
And, if that's the case, the next person who comes along may very well use the same keywords as the previous poster, and googling only gets a totally useless forum post telling him/her to google it.

Exactly. I always provide a google link. Lets them learn how to word their searches, which in turn keeps them from asking that type of question in the future. Forums are awesome, but new users just waaaay overdo it with the Oil and Hello World quesitons...
I had a friend look for the factorial code for python and found a stackexchange link of a guy asking and being chastised for not knowing factorial. Something like "If you don't have a baseline knowledge of the language, you shouldn't be here". That is counterproductive and a waste of space...

The problem with that is not everyone searches the same or has the same level of Google fu. There have been so many times all I was missing was the proper keyword and I would've found it, but 'just Google it' answers were no help. Because I already did, multiple times. I post questions to sites as a last resort because although they're supposed to be informative and not vague and condescending, it's the opposite
