Correct, everything is a class, interface, or enum (or a member thereof).
d33pcode ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 08:07:12 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well, I'm not sure about what do you mean, but I'll try to answer basing on what I know about Java (don't know how other languages manage scopes).
In Java, a scope is the lifetime accessibility of an item โ that can be a variable, a method (or function) or a class.
Scopes are usually assigned with access modifiers like this:
**public** class Foo() {...;}
**private** String bar;
**protected** void fooBar(){...;}
Assign scopes is kinda like telling where/when other objects/methods can use the item.
For example:
public is like saying "everyone can use this",
private โ "only items inside this class can use this"
protected โ "only items inside this package can use this".
Also, the scope of an item can depend on where it is declared.
For example, a method parameter (a variable declared inside of a function) is not even visible outside of that method.

int getParam2 { return paramOne; }
int getParam2 { return paramTwo; }
and similar boilerplate code, where you want it to be obvious that they all do basically the same thing, they all look visually the same, and by compressing them all like that you make reading the whole block basically a matter of reading one line and extrapolating.
As long as you/your team have agreed standards it doesn't fucking matter where you put braces
BoTuLoX ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:07:41 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It hurts/aids readability, so yes it does matter. That doesn't mean that you're going to reject a job because they don't use your favorite bracing style.
BoTuLoX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:17:35 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Which still means someone will have to cave in if there are conflicting beliefs, so that changes nothing.
Sure, any project must have a single, uniform coding style. That doesn't take away the only point I tried to make: Most of the time that style will be the one considered "default", which is Microsoft's opinion (braces on new line). Ergo, he's right, if you're using C# and like something like 1TBS you're probably not going to like the style used in most C# projects.

If only there was some sort of editor for making programs which could easily format programs to your preferred style and then reformat it back to the agreed upon style when you submit your code. If only.
BoTuLoX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:55:50 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Depending on the language and tooling, that can heavily affect your git commits, polluting it with small style changes in code you didn't touch at all.
Daniel15 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:02:42 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well, ideally, the committed code should follow whatever standard is being used. If it doesn't, clean up the codebase and commit that separately, and add a lint rule to ensure all code follows the standard.

Very true, I was just stating the most blanket/general code style since it helped discern the object vs constant issue. Though I guess I should say they used snake case for their method name.
Sean1708 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:31:16 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There are many people who don't write constants in uppercase for example are wrong.
Not really, no. Uppercase constants are ugly and I'm glad it's not the common practice in C#. It makes sense in dynamic languages like PHP, but in a static language like Java or C# you don't need enums with VALUES when Values are sufficient and definitely more readable.
Yes, but on /r/me_irl every post is titled me_irl, or some variation thereof. This often reflects that the poster relates strongly to the post. Thus, titling something me_irl implies you relate to it, in the same way as titling a post "rekt" indicates that someone in the post has been... rekt.

That's fair. It's just hilarious that the way he phrased it made it sound like he thought people should boycott their subreddit, like somehow they are that terrible of people or that any of this (especially a subreddit as hilariously dumb as me_irl) is worth fighting over.
It's pretty clear to anyone reading this thread that you don't find it hilarious and, in fact, are taking it much more seriously than the people you're arguing with.

Thank you! I see more people on this site wasting energy whining about their feelings being hurt while complaining about SJW's than I see actual SJW's obssessing over not hurting people's feelings.
It's not that people are getting angry at your lack of being pissed off
It's that you clearly can't comprehend that someone that is power-tripping will not even consider another side of an argument.
If you want to be an uppity subreddit that stops slurs - THAT'S FINE
If you want to be an uppity subreddit that stops people using language that isn't slur-ish, then that just seems shallow and pedantic, especially, as someone earlier pointed out, for a non-serious sub meant for humor.
Getting banned for calling a toaster "bitchin'"? That's so dumb. That's a fucking compliment. People need to learn connotations are not definitions - connotations can change with how people use a word with this microcosmic example being an exemplary anecdote.

They have a rule that says "No white people stuff", and there's an archived post about the mods responding to all the people accusing them of racism for it (hint, they don't care).
Enough people were banned based on the banned sub posts alone to almost automatically create "another" (/r/meirl is actually older) community. When you kick people off for saying "bitch", even in a quote, that's what happens. Duh?

Yeah he didn't say that, he said "or use this one if you want a subreddit not run by SJWs",
implying
A) somehow "being a jerk" and "SJW" are now just interchangeable and,
B) even if they were "SJW's" somebody who hadn't had any bad experiences with that sub until now would find that out and say "oh shit, I don't want to support that. I better boycott them and switch my allegiance to this other respectable subreddit".
Like it's hilarious how little this matters, and how bent out of shape people get about it on this damned site.
E: case in point, the karma score on most of my comments in this thread. You guys sure get worked up over bullshit, but I'll leave you to it.
Look, this is a sub where people have been banned for being white according to the mods. If that doesn't bother you enough to leave, then it doesn't bother you enough to leave.
[deleted] ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 16:34:54 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Like I said, there's no context there. It could very easily have been faked, and it also could've very easily been the guy shooting his mouth off about bullshit and the mods banned him for that reason just to troll him.

Well for one no there isn't, but also who gives a fuck? If they banned you, by all means go and start your own sub and advertise it, but why should that be a reason for other people not to use the original sub?
This is Reddit, just about the least important issue in my life, I go where I get content I like and I don't really care if the mods are mean to people. And even if they were mean to me, it certainly wouldn't be worth more energy than it would take to find a different sub with better mods.
People turn this bullshit into goddamned crusades and it's fucking hilarious

This is you:
"There can't possibly be anything wrong with that sub, how can there be anything wrong with it?"
later...
"Okay so yeah there's something wrong with the sub, but you're all idiots for caring"
Right, if you just lurk it might not matter too much to you. However, most people who subscribe(d) to that subreddit also want to interact (post and comment). If you get banned for the most mundane things, that's a reason for many people to get mad at the mods and move to a different subreddit (/r/meirl).
[deleted] ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 00:39:05 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I don't know, maybe I thought I could argue some sense into these people. I also gave up when it was clear everyone was content to downvote and move on.
Its a shame that I finally get to see someone write "Couldn't care less", and they still manage to be absolutely incorrect.
[deleted] ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 00:46:27 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I don't care in the same way I don't care about arguing politics on the internet. I'll happily do it, even enjoy it, but at the end of the day I don't really care if I convince anybody or if it stops being enjoyable I'll gladly abandon the argument.
Whatever you think you're doing right now, you aren't. This isn't some logical trap you've lured me into, this isn't me raging against your superior logical skills. I think this whole SJW thing is so tangibly stupid it makes me angry every time I see somebody mention it, but I really don't honestly care what people argue about on the internet.

moeburn ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:29:05 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
How can it be a toxic environment?
The people on it.
It's a sub that has absolutely no substance by design. What possible arguments can you even get into on there?
Ask the people that run it, because they seem to manage to find a way with literally nothing.
Because on Reddit, 90% of the time, "SJW" means "someone who doesn't like when I say something racist or sexist."
moeburn ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:34:18 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
90% of the time, when I ask people who use the terms "racist/sexist" like you just did what they think those words mean, they come up with a definition that doesn't exist on any dictionary on earth, and it ends up meaning "Someone who says something I don't personally like".
I mean seriously. Go on google and type in "define racism", and tell me if you think you used it properly, and come back to me.
You must not get around much. Reddit is one of the most hospitable places on the web for sensitive people. That or you get around a whole lot and tend to visit really toxic subs like /r/coontown.
EDIT: apparently coontown was understandably banned for being a vitrolic cestpool of hate. So that only really goes to prove my point I guess. Apparently they all moved over to voat
psi- ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:24:32 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Because it does not contain the information which key was not found. And by the time you usually catch it, the context in which indexed information is usable, is already gone. It would be extremely useful if it had even a weak reference to the object used as the key because GC is unlikely to happen during exception bubbling up.
for(int i=0; i<10; ++i)
try{
int val = collection[i];
f(val);
}catch(KeyNotFoundException){
print("skipping key " + i);
}
psi- ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:38:05 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There is always literal boatload of different places where one can be indexing a collection. Each one can throw. It's really not reasonable to decorate each one with a try-catch.
Or wrap the collection in a new collection that automatically skips unknown keys on iteration.
IMHO you really do have to specify at the call site whether you want to skip missing keys or hard-error. Attempting to make a judgement call outside of the function doing the indexing is some real javascript.
psi- ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:13:02 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The issue here is that all standard indexable collections in .NET can throw that useless POS. Ain't nobody got the time to wrap all the used collections and even then you'd need to have something for the components you might've used.
I don't know C# either. I was making one of those jokes where I use the original statement as "proof/source" for itself (in that OP said it's a "useless piece of shit"), but I guess it offended a bunch of people.
Vilavek ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 17:13:21 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks! For someone that knows intermediate C and basic C++, how much work do you think is needed to get into C#; also is it worth learning it or should i just master C++ and JAVA and Python?
Vilavek ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:51:02 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Hah, I could ask you the same question. I've been thinking about learning C++ but it seems daunting compared to C#. I think C# is probably very easy to get into comparatively, so you should have no problems if you already have some C/C++ knowledge.
If C# is anything like Java, I think you'll find that C++1z is pretty amazing.
Vilavek ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:53:14 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I wasn't aware of any of this C++17 stuff, and some how the addition of all those language features make learning C++ seem that much more intimidating lol..
Naw, all that sugar and type inference makes it incredibly easy to write fast code.
Vilavek ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:12:18 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well okay, as long as I can just carry on not fully understanding what my computer is doing or what the compiler really does to what I type like in C# I think I should be alright.
Sweet, sounds good! I'm very new to C++, but I can tell you C is a piece of pie. I learned programming on BASIC, which is (as you can guess from the name) a very basic language that is obscenely easy to program with.
C is a little harder than BASIC, and C++ seems to be just C with the ability to make "objects". I don't really like objects yet, but from the little tinkering I did, it didn't seem obscenely difficult. Just gotta remember what functions can access what objects.
Vilavek ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:07:27 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I started with Visual Basic 5 lol.. Bleh.. Eventually I found my way to C# without ever touching C/C++ and as a result I never got to deal with things like header files, not having a garbage collector, working with pointers (even though C# does support them), hell, multiple inheritance! I feel like I need to go back to C before I try C++.
I think you're in a better position to learn C# because really you're mostly learning the framework and how to not have to use language features you're already used to using. :P

It's been a minute, but recently I found myself trying to recall: in Java, there is no scope outside of classes?
Aurigarion ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 04:23:25 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Correct, everything is a class, interface, or enum (or a member thereof).
d33pcode ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 08:07:12 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well, I'm not sure about what do you mean, but I'll try to answer basing on what I know about Java (don't know how other languages manage scopes). In Java, a scope is the lifetime accessibility of an item โ that can be a variable, a method (or function) or a class. Scopes are usually assigned with access modifiers like this:
Assign scopes is kinda like telling where/when other objects/methods can use the item. For example: public is like saying "everyone can use this", private โ "only items inside this class can use this" protected โ "only items inside this package can use this".
Also, the scope of an item can depend on where it is declared. For example, a method parameter (a variable declared inside of a function) is not even visible outside of that method.

Thus, titling something me_irl implies you relate to it, in the same way as titling a post "rekt" indicates that someone in the post has been... rekt.

Hahaha, that's hilarious. So this is an example of the mods being... bad? They seem awesome from this exchange, compared to that whiny crybaby.
Edit: Haha, these programmers don't have a lot of humor
Antith3sis ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 17:40:23 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well they didn't listen to what he had to say, were picky because they could, and showed abuse of power by banning someone for no reason. (Unless you think that saying "bitching" is a bannable offense).
Illuminatesfolly ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:13:58 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Thank you! I see more people on this site wasting energy whining about their feelings being hurt while complaining about SJW's than I see actual SJW's obssessing over not hurting people's feelings.
Telemakiss ยท -8 points ยท Posted at 17:31:42 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Wow, and the downvotes we got really show how butthurt they get about it. So scared of SJWs!

you give yourself too much credit for calling us 'butthurt'. you are annoying and deserve to get downvoted. the end.
[deleted] ยท -5 points ยท Posted at 17:34:56 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah that took a sudden turn. There is something inherently funny about them getting pissed off about me not being pissed off enough.
Whatever, they're free to think this shit is important and get all upset about it, I really couldn't care less.
Capn_Cook ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 18:30:40 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
[deleted] ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 18:46:44 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I can comprehend it perfectly, I just don't care and really don't see how other people make a big deal about it.
Bobshayd ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 19:45:36 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Well the mods are happy enough to ban people for simply having a different opinion to themselves (I know, because I'm banned from there). It's a fairly toxic environment. Check out /r/bannedfromme_irl if you want some fun

I got both my alts banned for some relatively harmless adult jokes. One was where i said my gym teacher was "passable. Not hot, but OK looking".
Apparently I got banned because "no one wants to hear about your sexual fantasies with your teachers"

Isn't that what the downvote button is meant for, though?
I mean, you didn't break any rules. If the content didn't fit, then it should just be downvoted and people should move on with their lives.
moeburn ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 00:28:16 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's even worse, actually.
The community is apparently fine with it, but the mods get uppity about it.
[deleted] ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 16:17:18 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
How can it be a toxic environment? It's a sub that has absolutely no substance by design. What possible arguments can you even get into on there?
It's self-deprecating posts and comments entirely composed of memes.
deeplywombat ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 16:19:15 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Umm /u/joemckie answered your questions and more by posting a link to /r/bannedfromme_irl. You can see for yourself.
[deleted] ยท -9 points ยท Posted at 16:21:55 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
No he didn't, I'm seeing people trying to stir shit up on a subreddit that is basically by design devoid of any real substance.
I just find it remarkable that people are so capable of generating controversy that "proper running of me_irl" was considered critical enough to warrant a split in the community.

oooooohkay. So I don't know if that's real, I don't know if there's much more going on there and the mods just put that as the reason because they knew it would piss the guy off, and I don't even know if it really matters that much.
moeburn ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:30:02 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
They have a rule that says "No white people stuff", and there's an archived post about the mods responding to all the people accusing them of racism for it (hint, they don't care).
deeplywombat ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 16:25:41 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Enough people were banned based on the banned sub posts alone to almost automatically create "another" (/r/meirl is actually older) community. When you kick people off for saying "bitch", even in a quote, that's what happens. Duh?
[deleted] ยท -10 points ยท Posted at 16:28:02 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
You guys sure get worked up over bullshit, but I'll leave you to it.
deeplywombat ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 16:33:41 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Hezza8 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:51:46 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There's a report button for 'general white people nonsense', there are countless examples of people being banned for dumb shit
[deleted] ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 16:55:24 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well for one no there isn't, but also who gives a fuck? If they banned you, by all means go and start your own sub and advertise it, but why should that be a reason for other people not to use the original sub?
This is Reddit, just about the least important issue in my life, I go where I get content I like and I don't really care if the mods are mean to people. And even if they were mean to me, it certainly wouldn't be worth more energy than it would take to find a different sub with better mods.
People turn this bullshit into goddamned crusades and it's fucking hilarious
[deleted] ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 19:28:35 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Right, if you just lurk it might not matter too much to you. However, most people who subscribe(d) to that subreddit also want to interact (post and comment). If you get banned for the most mundane things, that's a reason for many people to get mad at the mods and move to a different subreddit (/r/meirl).
worklederp ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:36:44 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

worklederp ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:43:24 on January 21, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Ah, so you do care.

Parsleymagnet ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 22:44:33 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

ThisIs_MyName ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 16:23:22 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Why is it useless?
psi- ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:24:32 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Because it does not contain the information which key was not found. And by the time you usually catch it, the context in which indexed information is usable, is already gone. It would be extremely useful if it had even a weak reference to the object used as the key because GC is unlikely to happen during exception bubbling up.
ThisIs_MyName ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:28:27 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Wouldn't you do something like this?
psi- ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:38:05 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There is always literal boatload of different places where one can be indexing a collection. Each one can throw. It's really not reasonable to decorate each one with a try-catch.
ThisIs_MyName ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:05:24 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
You can make it nicer if C# has lambdas.

ThisIs_MyName ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:46:06 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
ThisIs_MyName ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:02:07 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
745631258978963214 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:57:59 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Vilavek ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:47:50 on January 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
