Eh, I've missed a flight or three, mostly for really dumb reasons, and they've never even asked me why. I don't think they care.

I'm not sure what they do if somebody was to open the conversation with a furious angry rant about how they went to a nonexistent gate on the other side of the airport because some random guy told them to, and it's everyone else's fault, and every airport employee is a drooling moron, etc.

Airlines will generally rebook you on new flights if you miss yours, even if it is your fault. Depending on the circumstances it may be costly, but the cost of your ticket can generally be applied to the new ticket.

There is usually one flight per day to Tokyo on a given airline from a given city (unless the airline flies to both HND and NRT - pretty rare nowadays). She is not going to Tokyo that day.

I work in customer service, and the frequency of normal people not reading signs because "I don't have time for that shit" is baffling. I can't imagine how someone as self-absorbed as OP's victim is able to drive herself to work in the morning safely or hasn't died from exclusively eating food with spit in it.

On your second paragraph I can sympathize at least a little. I was out of town recently and parked on a city street at 930pm. I went up to pay for parking but some guy said it's free parking. An hour later my friend points out a garage that's only $5 for the evening, and I tell him I found a spot that's free right now. Turned out it was paid until midnight. I gave a stranger the benefit of the doubt but some people really just like to eff with others. Luckily didn't get a ticket though.

I don't fly with my dog internationally because I don't ever want to be in a situation where I don't know the rules and I don't speak the language. So I don't know about Japan. My dog is back in LA chilling with my buddy right now.

But you can fly with a dog that is an ADA service animal or an ESA.

I have a little experience with the process of importing pets to Japan from the US. Japan doesn't have a No Foreign Animals ban, but it is one hell of a lengthy process to bring an animal into Japan. Lengthy, but not complicated.

As for ADA, haha you sad American! ADA has no power here! Guide dogs must be trained from a proper organization and have proper registration, and guess what! All of the organizations are Japanese.

You need a battery of recent tests for diseases and documentation of such through an embassy I believe... and something else I am forgetting. Something like proof the dog couldn't have got any of those diseases you tested for in the meantime between the flight and the tests.

This is info off the top of my head based on info from a Japanese friend, so its most likely I am forgetting something or getting the details messed up.

I travel to Asia 1-3x a year, and I have seen several people with smaller dogs inside the cabin. The dogs are in carriers, placed underneath the seat (just like your bag, purse, whatever.)

He made an edit purposely to include his information about his comedy, which was totally unrelated and unnecessary. While it was a nice story, I doubt that it actually happened (or if it did, it was nothing like was stated), and it's just purely an attempt at organic advertising. Reddit has gotten notorious for that, especially in the movies subreddit and similar.

Japan is nowhere as tough as Australia or Hawaii. Japan has a really short quarantine period (twelve hours) if you have your dog checked out beforehand and documented (otherwise it can be up to six months). Main requirements are getting an ID chip, full rabies vaccine, and blood test to prove the rabies vaccine.

I have been flying fairly many times to many places in the world and never have I seen any animal around the airport, except for check-in counters, where they leave them in crates. But I have never been to the US.

I work at a vet clinic, and have filled out plenty of international health certificates for pets, Including to Japan. (The Vet fills in a couple key areas and signs, but I get to sift through regulations and verify we have our ducks in a row) It is true it's a pain to take a pet to Japan, and there is a 180 day waiting period AFTER they get 2 rabies shots, and while the 180 days are ticking by, you have to get those rabies titers checked. Also they must be microchipped, and had to get that microchip on or before the day of the second rabies vaccine, or it doesn't count until you get another rabies vax and then start your waiting period. There is more, but that's the biggest part.

So how could this careless lady manage all that?

I happen to work in an affluent area. There are several clients who have house keepers, assistants, or nannies bring pets in for them. Sometimes the staff know more about the pet than the owner, sometimes they know nothing about them.

There are also companies you can pay to do it all for you.

Also, after they have successfully entered Japan, they can reenter on their previous vaccines and stuff for 3 years after the date of the last rabies vaccine. They need a new certificate, but all the other work is done.

And it's also possible she didn't do the proper preparations. The receiving airport cares much more about checking the papers, so she would have been in for a shock, and cried about not knowing she needed special permission to bring her precious puppy on vacation.

So as far as the dog paper work, not too unbelievable.

Work at LAX, it would not be easier for them to find her and escort her back to her gate. Everyone is busy there, the only time any kind staff can escort someone is to do it on their break.

With the exception of airline employee(s) that are designated to escort "VIP" and they are usually doing that than to have time to walk someone to their gate in another terminal.

If someone is not there by gate closing time. They would just close the gate and get someone in and throw the bag out. If the person shows up even 30 secs after the gates/door close, they won't open it.

edit: forgot to add, the gate agents would just page the person, if they are in a different terminal she would never even hear the page. The page is usually just a loud speaker that heard locally, not airport wide. I've seen many people miss their flights, its not that uncommon.

Planes leave the airport with people's luggage and not the passenger all of the time still. I went through it last December. Flight was full and I accepted a voucher to to a taxi to a different airport. Because my last leg remained the same they let my luggage take the original flights. I fly about 50 times a year and the airlines have staff to collect your luggage and hold it for you until you arrive if it gets ahead of you.

Don't forget the part about bringing a dog on an international flight to Tokyo, when Japan has some of the strictest rules against bringing animals into their isolated island country

Yeah, this. I fly all the time for work. If your bag is loaded into the cargo section of the plane and you don't board- they hold up the whole plane to take that bag off. I've had it happen to me a few times. It's terrible.

So this story didn't happen or the lady got back and boarded the plane.

My wife and I just flew from SFO to Tokyo without changing checked bags...it's not that hard if the trip is less than 2 weeks.

Surprised you didn't mention the fact that people don't just pick their seats on a flight. You have a seat number assigned - especially for international flights. While it's possible to switch seats or spread out on some empty ones, people don't really do that until the airplane doors have been closed and you're certain the seats are empty.

Because they don't ever remove bags after closing the gate.

I hate to toot the /r/thathappened horn, but I believe pets have to remain on quarantine for a long time before a flight for disease control. I believe the same protocols happen for fragile agricultural states as well. I know Hawaii has a similar rule.

I'm not sure pets are allowed in the cabin on international flights... are they? Delta seems to have a flight length limit. JAL doesn't seem to accept animals other than service animals. I'm too lazy to look up others, but that made me suspect.

Love this story, and all, but I'm definitely skeptical. My husband and I pcs-ed to Japan, last year, and wanted to take our pets. We had to do a lot of research to be able to do that. Sounds like the dog was on a leash when they'd definitely need to be in a carrier. Although I suppose she could've taken it out of the carrier for the airport. And, it's been a year, but I vaguely remember that dogs had to be with checked baggage? But it could depend on the airline and I could be wrong. Still seems iffy to me.
