What's Gravity Falls and what does it have to do with someone named Bill?

Everyone's talking about something known only as "Gravity Falls" and apparently has something to do with someone named Bill. What is it?

Gravity Falls was a two-season animated kids show that was sort of The X-Files meets Adventure Time. It was very funny, moving, had good characters and had a long-running story. The primary antagonist of the story was Bill Cipher. Bill was a creepy inter-dimensional pyramid thing that had an amusing energy and sense of humor and here's a link to his introduction[1].

Edit: Oh and the show's final episode aired yesterday, probably why everyone is talking about it.

Gravity Falls Introduction of Bill Cipher

How we got to meet Bill Cipher and how it went. How about that for a first impression!? Lol.

I've had a hard time bringing myself to watch gravity falls for the sole reason that it's on DisneyXD so I feel like its too much of a kids show. However, this backwards message joke and the "Like the infinite horizon, it eludes my grasp." joke when the dude is trying to lick his elbow have made me want to watch it. Literally the only clips of the show I've seen, but I love the humor so far.

Welp, here I go... Episode 1.

I got started watching the show with a girl. It became our thing. After a while, I started looking forward to the show more than hanging out with the girl...

I started watching Wilfred with a girl... It became our thing.

Watched the whole show together in about 2 months last summer. Things between us ended but now whenever I hear the Wilfred theme I feel like I'm relaxing next to her on her basement couch; it gives me kind of a safe/comforting feeling when I hear it. Unfortunately I can't re-watch Wilfred now because I've Pavlov'ed myself into tying the show up with the girl.

TL;DR: Don't watch your favorite show with a girl you have feelings for. You will ruin the show for yourself

I wonder what Rick would have done if Bill had taken over that universe/timeline/dimension. I feel like Rick and Bill would either be best friends or mortal enemies.

pdgeorge · 19 points · Posted at 12:09:06 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

I feel like Rick would blacklist that dimension. "Look Morty while that dimen uuurrrrp while that universe looks fun, having suffered wierdmageddon, I'm tempted to go back there all the time! They have no rules like, not even physics! Do you know what that's like? Can you picture the sex? It's just.... There is no way to describe it because it shouldn't be possible! But one wrong move Morty, one wrong move and you get transformed into a giant headed baby that's tapdancing for all eternity for a sentient one eyed talking pyramid!"

You should binge watch one and then go watch the other, because the similarities in structure and tone, which is notable because one show is written for adults and one for children (well, kind of) are very similar from show to show, but the character interaction is very different, so it makes the shows very jarring.

Also, Louis C.K. voices a character in one episode.

It's not a kids show. It's similar to Avatar the Last Airbender in that it's a PG rated show for adults. That said GF gets REALLY dark at times. For you and anyone else who struggles with the moments where it's a kids show, here's a handy episode guide. This is just my opinion and feel free to disregard it. You really should watch all of them but not everyone has time for that. S1 especially has a lot of 1 offs that have no relation to everything else. For reference, I'm just shy of 22 (2 days!) having started GF last August, so I didn't see any part of this show from the perspective of a kid.

S1 E1 Watch. Sets the stage, but also one of the best episodes all around.

S1 E2 Watch at least the first bit. It's imo one of the less interesting episodes, but it introduces an important character. Start it but feel free to skip if it doesn't grab you.

S1 E3 Nothing important plot wise, but a good episode. Watch.

S1 E4 Very important plot wise. Watch.

S1 E5 Not all that important but really sets the stage for Dippers budding crush on Wendy. Mabel eats too much candy and kinda goes on an acid trip, and it's worth watching just for the imagery there. Feel free to skip but I'd recommend this one.

S1:E6 Really great episode. Nothing important plot wise but I'd highly recommend it.

s1 E7 Introduces Mabel's friends. Might also introduce Pacifica, but that might be the next episode. Worth watching to establish who they are as they show up a lot later on.

S1 E8 This is a hard one for me. This is the only episode where Quentin Trembley appears and he's my absolute favorite character. But most people find him stupid and this entire episode lame. Skip if you really want to get to plot, but please watch. For me.

S1:E9 Widely regarded as one of the best episodes period. I'm personally not a big fan but it introduces Blendin (voiced by Justin Roiland of Rick and Morty) and has several interesting moments. Definitely watch, but I'm with you if you don't understand the hype.

S1:10 Skip. Nothing important happens. the TL;DR Dipper frees a Ryu (street fighter) clone from an arcade machine to sick on Robbie, and then has to stop the clone from actually killing him. Good fun.

S1:E11 Skipable. Gideon shows up again and it's a great episode but nothing important happens.

S1:E12 Also skipable. Decent episode (ending is especially fantastic) but nothing really happens after all is said and done. To note, this is a Halloween episode, so if you want something like that watch.

S1:E13 Skipable. It's hilarious and has some really stand out moments, but ultimately nothing happens.

S1:E14 Watch. Nothing really important happens but it really helps clarify the relationships between the characters. All around great episode.

S1:E15 Nothing happens but one of the better One-offs. Watch it.

S1:E16 Nothing really happens. It's alright. Give it a try but skip if it's not grabbing you.

S1:E17 Nothing really happens. This is the Boy Band parody episode, so if something like that sounds boring to you skip. On the other hand, if something like that sounds good to you, you're in for a real treat.

S1:E18 Kind skipable, but features a lot of McGucket. Worth a watch.

S1:E19 This is where IMO the show starts getting really good. This is where that scene you saw is from. Watch this for sure.

S1:E20 Watch. Obviously

Season 2 has more plot episodes than one off's so if i don't mention something, watch it. Or just watch the whole thing, makes life easier. S2 had a noticeable bump in writing quality from S1 IMO, and there's not a single episode except possibly Love God that I wouldn't whole heartedly recommend.

S2:E1 Not technically the most important, but it introduces a bunch of recurring characters as well as S2's plot line. Watch

S2:E2 This is definitely on the list of must watch plot wise. Just mentioning it to give a shoutout to my favorite episode.

S2:E3 Nothing major happens, but all around entertaining episode as well as really showing Pacifica character development. Remember Big Henry.

S2:E4 not the greatest episode, but has a couple of important plot moments. Bill makes a return here, and his dialog is probably worth watching the whole thing for.

S2:E5 Skipable. It's a fantastic parody of Japanese Dating Sims, definitely give it a watch if that sounds funny to you. Nothing really important happens though.

S2:E6 second halloween special. Not as good as the first IMO but has it's moments. It's a bunch of one off's crammed into one a la S1:E14, so if you enjoyed that this might be worth a watch. This is also the episode where Neil deGrasse Tyson makes his cameo. IMO he's not a good voice actor lol, but some people went crazy for it.

S2:E7 Again a must watch plot wise. This is McGuckets episode where we finally find out who he is, and it's a doozy. Just mentioning that so you can be excited if you happened to like him.

S2:E8 Return of Blendin. At it's heart though, this is Soos's episode. Only relevant thing that really happens is the introduction of Time Baby, but give this a watch. It has so much heart put into it.

S2:E9 Ironically, The Love God doesn't have as much heart as the previous one. Skipable. It has a few good moments but is overall one of the worst episodes of the series. Don't get me wrong, worst episode is still better than most episodes of other series, but some episode had to take that honor and this is my nomination.

S2:E10 This is Pacifica's episode, and is worth a watch just for her character development. Main reason though is it sets the stage for the next episode. Speaking of next episode, try your best to avoid reading ANYTHING about GF. It was arguably the single most impactful thing I've ever seen in an animated series and i still get chills from watching the ending. And I'd had it spoiled for me (my own fault, I'm not complaining). Just trust me on this one. Don't even look up episode names.

S2: E14 All around good fun, but not the most important plot wise. I'd recommend watching it.

S2: E16 Feels like it belongs in S1. Complete 1 off and not as well written as the surrounding episodes. Apparently chronologically it actually takes place in S1 despite being in S2. Not the worst episode, but not too far from it either. Has enough good moments that it's worth watching.

And then it's one major episode after another till the end. I hope you, or anyone else who reads this, enjoys this series as much as I have. You're really in for a treat.

Honestly, it was the only good show on Disney XD while it was airing. Now Disney XD has nothing since Gravity Falls is completed. Gravity Falls is definitely the exception rather than the standard as far as Disney XD shows go.

Star vs the Forces of Evil is on Disney XD too! It only has one season so far (a second on the way) I wasn't sure about it at first but the show caught me off guard and I got the feels.

Its a pretty cute show, the real arc is hidden for a while though.

yrulaughing · 3 points · Posted at 14:30:25 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Watched a few episodes of it, but it was a bit spazzy for my tastes... Also it was lacking in an over-arching plot. Does it ever get continuity among the episodes and a plot that spans a season or so?

RayJade · 3 points · Posted at 14:58:18 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Kinda, the real plot doesn't really start til the end(ish) of season one. I agree that it can be spazzy but I still liked it.

I've been really busy with school and stuff so I only had time to watch the first episode so far, and I gotta be honest, I wasn't crazy about it.

That being said, I'm not giving up on it yet! There has to be a reason so many of you guys love this show, so I'm committing to watching at least the first 5 or 6 episodes no matter what. I know it takes a while to get a feel for the characters and the plot of the show, so I'm willing to give it a real chance.

I can update this after I get to episode 5 if you'd like, I just don't know how long it's gonna take to get there since I'm drowning in homework at the moment (but there's always time for reddit)

Its also notable in that it occasionally 'crosses-over' with another popular animated series, Rick and Morty, such as here (WARNING THIS LINK CONTAINS SPOILERS) as well as here where the aforementioned villain Bill is seen on a screen.

It's also worth mentioning that the creator constantly created puzzles, codes and hints in the episodes, foreshadowing future events, twists and other mysteries. And he probably hid a statue of Bill somewhere in Oregon and left the clues to find it in the last couple of episodes. It's a really awesome goodbye present.

It also has Matt Chapman doing several voices (no main characters though), Matt being one of the Chapman Brothers who created and ran/run Homestar Runner.

Proper ending. The reason it's ending is because Alex Hirsch had a complete plan for the show from the get-go and he reached the point in the story he wanted to.

Just saw the corrupted intro...

This show ended terribly, didnt it...

I left in the Summerween episode, as it was the newest one at that point and decided to wait it out for a while so I had lots of episodes to catch up.
I do know of Bill though, by internet osmosis. But I was not expecting THAT much of a trip down horror avenue.

WhoKnowsWho2 · 6 points · Posted at 05:59:39 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Petertwnsnd · 42 points · Posted at 03:15:57 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Not canceled per say. The show was always designed to be 2 seasons and the creator was the one who made the call to end the show on his terms despite the shows success. So the show did just end, but it wasn't "cancelled" by Disney but rather came to its natural and preplanned end.

I suppose you meant that just because it ended eventually it went in that category. I haven't seen the Sopranos, but the other shows you listed (BB, A:TLA, GF) all had conclusive stories that wrapped the show up where it neede to be. LOST had no idea what they were doing and dragged on to milk the money of being one of the biggest shows on television.

Castriff · 1 points · Posted at 12:29:16 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Well technically it could've been 3 seasons, but a lot of people figured out the big twist early on and Hirsch didn't think it was fair to pretend they hadn't. So the schedule was sped up a bit.

Oshojabe · 1 points · Posted at 19:45:04 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Interesting. I didn't realize that it was originally meant to be three seasons. Explains why the second half of season 2 feels so rushed.

Castriff · 2 points · Posted at 19:47:17 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

In any case, the story got completed, and that's more important. But I do wish it had been longer.

Link_95 · 1 points · Posted at 13:10:57 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

I wish they did at least an extra half season though. My friend and I were talking about it and we agreed the second half of season 2 (after the big reveal) felt very rushed story wise. Like season 1 and the first half of season 2 had very good pacing with its build up but then suddenly everything started happening at once.

johnadreams · 12 points · Posted at 00:45:53 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

That's unclear. Probably? The creator Hirsch had a definite plan that he wanted to follow with his story and it did end on a climactic note. No one is sure whether it got cancelled or Hirsch just reached the end of the story he wanted to tell (possibly both?).

catpor · 77 points · Posted at 00:54:01 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Alex Hirsch addressed this on his twitter and tumblr.

The first thing to know is that the show isn’t being cancelled- it’s being finished. This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to payoff.

PlayMp1 · 2 points · Posted at 05:19:08 on February 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

FALLasl33p · 1 points · Posted at 04:22:21 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Is it worth getting into? I was watching Gravity Falls for a fair while just on Disney and it wasn't half bad, but stuff happened etc etc and I stopped.
I have three other series' that I watch hungrily (Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Legend of Korra) if that's any indication of what I might like...?
It felt slightly lacklustre to me at the start, even though I liked it a lot, although if AT and SU are any indication it could be liable to take a big u-turn xD
So because I'm assuming you've jumped into the deep end, would you recommend Gravity Falls?

ObamaBiden2016 · 6 points · Posted at 05:21:49 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

I would highly recommend it. If you have a schedule, clear it. If you have a job, quit it. If you have children, they are on their own now. Make time to watch this show.

AHAHA
That's pretty confident
I mean, I was planning to clear this Saturday to binge Steven Universe (I'm behind)....
I suppose I could slip in some Pines <3 I just hope it's worth it

superdemongob · 4 points · Posted at 08:03:44 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

It will be worth it. especially if you're dropping names like Steven Universe and Adventure Time.

Maybe it takes a couple of episodes but that charm will surely capture you and take you on an adventure.

You'll learn to love Soos (spelling?) and Mabel will most definitely get less annoying and you'll see different sides of Uncle Stan.

You'll see some solid moral lessons for kids while keeping the show interesting and not diluting the plot or happenings just to artificially arrive at the moral endings.

It is a really great show and it does suck that it is over but damn, what an ending. The only thing I think was wrong was how stretched out the ending was. I want to go back and watch all of the finale episodes in a day and I'm sure that would make it infinitely better.

TL;DR What I'm saying is if you don't like it, come back here and tell me why. If you do love it, come back here and tell me why. I'd love to hear the reasons. My reasons are above :)

FALLasl33p · 1 points · Posted at 08:16:05 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Keep this up and you'll properly convince me to get into this show, and then goodbye homework xD
Alright I'll give it a shot
Also:

Soos (spelling?) and Mabel

This immediately made me think of that song for some reason
My name is Mabel it rhymes with table...

superdemongob · 1 points · Posted at 08:29:07 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yo, I didn't even mention the best parts because spoilers haha. I like it about as much as Steven Universe. Sometimes more because after binge watching SU, I have these rare moments where I just don't want to here Steven's voice anymore haha.

FALLasl33p · 1 points · Posted at 08:47:05 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Aha yeah I have high hopes for Gravity Falls
just gotta remember not to set my expectations sky-high or it'll be TFIOS disappointment all over again (although it's not really my fault; so many reviews said stuff like "this is the best book in the world, my life makes sense now")
Anyway if I do end up adding another show to my love list I'll know the people to thank and you'll be one of them <3
Good luck to OP if they ever check it out

superdemongob · 1 points · Posted at 08:59:02 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)

Haha, sounds like a plan :)

I'll leave you with just one last expectation managing comment. I would rank it on par and just a bit better than Steven Universe. Obviously we aren't the same person so grain of salt with all opinions but if you go in expecting that, I don't think you'll be upset.

Good luck and god speed.

Also, if you know any other similar shows that are on your list, fire them my way. I'm always looking for new shit.

And I think part of why GF felt lacklustre was because I wasn't watching it properly? I was often just watching reruns of the same episodes with new ones here and there for a long time period (that's what I get for watching it on TV). I'll give it a proper go at some point. kakepop · 30 points · Posted at 02:41:46 on February 17, 2016 · (Permalink)*

I think there was a pretty popular fan animation for gravity falls set to that song?

Edit: found a couple different versions (as well as many AMVs) x x

I guess the upbeat tone of the song paired with the violent lyrics felt very Bill-ish, and now that I listen to it again it does sound vaguely like his actual voice. I guess it just got adopted by part of the fandom?

I don't think you guys understand the weight of Bill's character. He wasn't some funny, cute little pyramid guy. He was an all powerful, interdimensional demon that could control reality and used his powers to manipulate and torment the mortals around him. Gravity Falls was an insane Disney show for what they got away with just with that character. The plot, depth, and complete immersion of the fan base into that show is very impressive as far as a Disney show goes.

And then they all fell down and everyone was fine, and even the gnome made it out okay, and I remembered

Plus it was set in Oregon. Nothing is ever set in Oregon! I'm from Oregon.

Something something, Oregon.

Portlandia, Grimm, Bates Motel, The Goonies are all based in Oregon

My memory is hazey, but I think the Elven homeland in Shannara was in Oregon pre-apocalypse and relocated there (or former western Washington) once the nuclear winter ended.

I's not objectively the best episodic game, that's an opinion. My favorite is/was The Last Door, for one.

The opening during the weirdmaggedon episodes definitely was shocking by Disney standards. Never would I thought Disney would associate themselves with a river of blood that is glowing upwards to what appeared to be a demon hole.
