BoB says the world is flat, and tries to prove it with 'observation'. And he took it to social media. So Mr Tyson decided to try to educate the poor young man.

This makes me incredibly sad that somebody with a decent amount of media influence is basically spreading delusion and hysteria to his fanbase. Nothing makes my blood boil quite like the willful spreading of blatantly false information.

Not everyone knows the other people in a given sub. Sometimes the /s helps to clarify that one is using sarcasm instead of being an outright racist.

You should be able to convey a facetious intent without the use of what is basically a textual emoticon. You wouldn't put /s in any kind of literate work. It's just lazy.
You can do that in newspapers and half the people miss the point anyway (see Charlie Hebdo a satirical paper and yet some people keep missing the point). It's even harder to judge people's intent on Reddit.

there's a subreddit (which I've been banned from) for it, filled with very questionable posts. It was really tough to figure out who the trolls were, but there were definitely some sad fools who were gulping up the bullshit
Edit: I still can't remember the subreddit guys, thanks for the help.
For anyone that's seriously looking for the subreddit, it's likely /r/flatearthsociety, largely satire. /r/flatearth is also possible, but that has a stickied post about being under new moderation and is now serious and against flat-earth hypotheses (despite the name of the subreddit).
I don't know of any serious pro flat earth subreddits, though. I hope that's because there aren't any.
[deleted] ยท 54 points ยท Posted at 20:34:31 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Why, why did I look into that. I expected the absurd flat earth theories. I didn't expect every other possible conspiracy theory to show up. I guess it kinda proves that it's not that they've found flaws with a spherical Earth, but that a particular kind of paranoid mindset breeds all those theories.
[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 20:54:30 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's one of those conspiracy theories that can only be supported by other conspiracy theories. It's conspiracies all the way down.
I thought there was a chance the mods would be like, "okay guys, no more anti-evolution stuff, we're here to talk about the world being flat" or something like that. I mean, it's not like the concepts are inherently related.
I didn't expect every other possible conspiracy theory to show up.
Oh you've been so brainwashed. With free vacuum conspiracies, there's no limit to the amount of conspiracy theories. What you think is every possible conspiracy theory is only what they want you to see.
And the mods are vicious about their beliefs too; I remember some people tried to go in there and set em straight a few months ago. Bans left and right.
"The globe push came during intense seafaring exploration.
By making it a globe, it prevented the masses from even trying to explore further since you know, people have circumnavigated the globe and there is nothing else to explore right?
Essentially, the push to make the Earth a globe stopped people from exploring. What are they hiding on this plane we call Earth? More than likely they are hiding land. They want us to look into space instead of exploring on Earth. In my estimation they are hiding land in the farthest reaches of the north. And honestly, I am not about to say 100% conclusively that this plane is circular."
What the fuck? These people are absolutely 100% delusional. It's like if you took the worst of /x/ and /pol/ and blended them together into a mix of absolutely batshit tinfoilers.
I kind of wonder if there are serious flat-earth-believers in both the northern and southern hemisphere, and if so, what their explanation is for why the moon appears "upside-down" to the other group - but I somehow feel like I'd regret initiating dialogue there

Haha what "ordeal" are you talking about? Did you honestly have trouble discerning whether or not someone who challenged "round truthers" to stand on the bottom of a beach ball was joking? When it was a comment replying to a Reddit switcheroo?
Unless.. Was your comment in fact intended to embody the very sentiment that it ostensibly ascribes to the comment above it? If so, then I stand before you hoodwinked, bamboozled, flimflammed, and, last but not least, impressed
Sorry, still not getting it. We're going to need to establish an origin in objective Minkowski space and a relative origin on the ball. We'll also have to define a translation 4-vector, r, to get from one to the other.
Now, I recommend using our "objective" origin as the center of the solar system. I also recommend we mark the ball in some way, maybe two distinct marks on points 180o from each other on the surface of the ball. I'll call one, "North Pole" and one "South Pole". As no size for this "beach ball" was specified ahead of time, I'll call my beach ball "Earth". Because it has beaches.
Pursuant to these restrictions, here is a picture of two people standing on the bottom of a beach ball.
For reference here is a picture of the beach ball used with the "South Pole" clearly visible.
Finding the translation vector, r, is left as an exercise for the student due Thursday at the beginning of class. The student may use any of the three standard coordinate systems discussed in the text.
Well, the first picture is clearly someone on their way to the Great Ice Wall. Probably a witch. The hat's a giveaway. The second picture is some sort of blue round thing with swirls and is very pretty but also probably the work of witches.
I never establish origins in Minkowski space because I'm not that kind of girl but if you'd like to know anything else about beachballs, drop me a line and maybe we can camp out and talk about it while toasting marshmallows or heretics or something.
So as soon as he's standing on it, the side he's touching is becoming the bottom? (I mean yes, that sums up my experience with standing on balls, but I always thought I just sucked at keeping balance.)
I recall seeing a link on reddit (I forget where) that was pretty amusing, as it was a guy who insisted NASA were posting fake photos. To prove this, he set up a miniature model of the solar system in a hallway at his work, and used an SLR to simulate the satellite and took...exactly the same photos as NASA. He'd been confused by perspective somehow, and actually admitted that he was wrong...but that they were still obviously lying about everything else.

This made me think, on a beach ball there is no set bottom side because the bottom side is relative to how you hold it or how it's positioned on the ground - but if you turn it upside down then the bottom is now the top and the top is the bottom... right?

I've been spending way to much time in the last five month on YouTube but I encountered several YouTube sceptics disproving the flat earthers. Also the comedy podcast Race Wars, hosted by two comedians invites a Flat Earther on their show and ask him questions. I think the flat heart her was named Gary something.
How does he think time zones work? I mean, catch a plane from coast to coast bruh. Damn.
Does he think there's, like, a bathtub room at the edge to keep the ocean from pouring out, or what? How does he think RAIN works? What keeps all the air from falling over the edge, if gravity is in the same direction everywhere? So many questions.

BoB about a month ago was just some rapper from a long time ago that had a few great songs. Now he is the middle of every bodies eye, and a name being brought up in house holds. Rappers have a history of lying to get haters so they are more popular.

Well its more aimed towards the fans, and don't forget Jay z has an almost spotless record of platinum selling albums and still has songs going platinum to this day as singles. The song in question is from his more successful project "the black album" and the beat was produced (for free mind you) by Eminem. You should listen to the song if you wish to understand where he is coming from. Actually to throw another fun fact in on his song "Renegade" featuring Eminem he talks about this exact point on the first verse
"Motherfuckers, say that I'm foolish
'You only talk about jewels
Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it"
(From the album "The Blueprint)
His first album " Reasonable Doubt" really showed Jay Z as a pretty profound guy and he shows it on his albums and the fans respond to it. Even lesser popular albums like "American Gangster" or "Kingdom Come" have songs that stand out, Jay is really good at concept albums.
Yes, he's successful in America. But I don't listen to "successful American pop music" really because it's for people who want something in the background to nod along to, not audiophiles and musicians and prog-rock nerds. I've never really liked him and this reinforces my prejudices. I enjoyed the singles he made with Kanye though.
The thing is that in the modern world, media is ubiquitous, so media personalities are subsequently ubiquitous. This means that a large number of those personalities are going to be morons. Some of them get to be media personalities by being morons.
That being said, it doesn't much matter. Anyone who decides to get science knowledge from a rapper will believe any idea that blows in on the wind. When it comes down to it, Tyson is much more well known than BoB and has some actual credibility as a scientist. Most of the exposure Bob got from this was a direct result of Tyson's rebuttal.
zhazz ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:47:17 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It is all marketing. Say something cringe-worthy on social media and get free publicity. Worked for DJ Kaled, and honestly would you have even heard about this BoB guy if not for this "story"? Of course Tyson wants some attention too so he decided to chime in, unless that was planned too.
Maybe this is a publicity stunt to promote his new album, "Flat Line". He knew that he would get backlash for spewing an unpopular opinion. It's just good marketing.
There's a thread here on Reddit where they believe the Earth is flat. Forgot the name of it though. They're all tools and you can't tell them shit. It's quite sad.
If you wanna have fun, look at Tila Tequila's Twitter. There's enough gold there for a lifetime, considering she posts every 5 minutes 24/7.
It's like this, but better.

What scares me is that he's spouting logic that was common back centuries ago when we were first starting to being to find/understand our place in the universe. It's scary to see someone with a good amount of influence over a sizable audience, spouting shit that even a 5th grader could tell you was incorrect.

BoB has 3x the facebook followers (9M) and hasn't been around as long. Do you seriously believe that a popular science figure has more reach than a mainstream rapper? You may as well believe that the earth is flat..
Reddit is not indicative of the real world.
EDIT: I apologize for the millions of jimmies that I've rustled today over this comment.
A popular science figure who narrated a pretty popular cable science program and has done interviews on plenty of others. I guarantee you if you poll my demographic (I'm 40) WAY more people know about Neil than BoB.
Never crossed my mind to follow him on Facebook, but I do follow him on Twitter, as do 4.8M other people, vs 2.3M for BoB.
IanPR ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:35:10 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I didn't really have time to poll other metrics, but yeah, he seems less popular than I initially thought.
Yes I do. You can have 9 million followers and they could all think you are an idiot. NDT has credibility that a rapper does not have. I'm more likely to pay attention to what a PhD says about their field than a guy who can rhyme on beat.
Also there is more to reach than social media. NDT can get Senators to return his calls. I doubt many rappers could say the same.
IanPR ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:31:59 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Ok, so you're talking about qualitative reach. Either way, BoB is apparently less popular than I thought, and measuring perceived reach of popular figures is a complex enough concept that people should avoid arguing about it on the internet.
No NDT has a larger reach period. He can pick up the phone and ask to be on most talk shows and expect a positive response. That isn't true for most entertainers. This is a huge advantage when you realize that I didn't just specify the USA. NDT is someone most people can be expected to know or at least know that he's a big deal because of his job.
B.O.B. wouldn't register with most people over 25ish.
Holy shit you are dumb. You say that reddit is not indicative of the real world right after you say that the amount of facebook followers you have is.
IanPR ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:49:29 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Reddit is not indicative of the real world as it has a semi-homogeneous mindset when it comes to STEM subjects and popular culture, and a userbase that is 6.6x smaller. (monthly active counts) Facebook has a wider breadth of users, and isn't based around centrally-available content so this 'hivemind' bias is going to be much less (Pages seem to be taking Facebook in this direction though).
There is no perfect way to measure someone's 'reach'. Google would probably be useful, but with a name like 'B.o.B.', that's out of the question, so I used Facebook. The better answer would be an aggregate of multiple large datasets, but that still wouldn't fully answer this subjective question.
I came to a quick conclusion on an extremely general topic of which there is no certain non-subjective answer. Sue me.
Which is fucking insane to me! He's basically a nobody (as some people in this thread are pointing out), but the scope of the rap community on social media so so broad that he's getting droves of attention.
MacNeal ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:33:05 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Eh. I'm a fan of B.o.b., so obviously I was quite disappointed when this happened, and then as I thought about it, I realized as far as shit like this goes, this is probably the least damaging so I'm okay with it.
So he thinks the earth is flat, so he says it publicly, so what. Literally thinking this hurts no one whatsoever expect a few people thinking he's an idiot, which I guess only hurts his image. He's not looking at child porn, advocating suicide, being racist or anything. It's the stupidest thing to care about. It changes your life in no way, if the earth were actually flat. Obviously, we're managing life just fine.
It'd be different if he were like an engineer or something, but in that case he definitely would not think that so.

Is there a word for the feeling you get when you learn about someone who may be ignorant enough that they might singularly put a dent in the bell-curve of the entire world's averaged intelligence?
Later on Tuesday afternoon, Tysonโs nephew, who performs under the name Tyson, responded with a battle track of his own defending his uncle. Riffing on Drakeโs diss track to Meek Mill, Back to Back, itโs called Flat to Fact and asks at one point: โIs Donland Trump the one whoโs feeding you all these stupid bits of information?โ
Well, you can drive around a flat city. Let's focus on how he's wrong because of the petabytes of scientific evidence, rather than trying to find some "gotcha" moment in his own words.
David Irving is a known and outspoken Holocaust denier, by the way.
Stalin was way worse than Hitler. That's why the POTUS* [podis? I can't tell what he's saying] gotta wear a kippuh.
Get a lawyer, look up Dr. Richard Sauder
Sauder appears to be some sort of crazy conspiracy theorist.
Also he repeats "There's no superior bloodline" in the chorus throughout the song. While that might be the only thing I agree with in the song, I fail to see what this has to do with his support for the Flat Earth Theory.
If that's an example of this guy's rapping, I have no idea how he even has a career in the first place. Even if you ignore the willful ignorance there, that was just... not good.
I find it hilarious (and kinda depressing) that a famous rapper will take the time to make an entire track dissing a respected astrophysicist. Not only that, but it was to tell someone with a Ph.D. in astrophysics who works as the director at the Hayden Planetarium that he's wrong about the earth being round.

Genuinely curious to learn more about this flat earth phenomenon... so they think NASA is "in on it", let's say they could raise money to launch their own satellite... do they posit that it would rotate under the earth, revealing dirt clods and tree roots handing from the bottom? Serious question.
They speculate that the earth is an infinitely long and deep (or thereabouts) circle, with the North Pole at the middle, and an ice wall stretching from antartica outwards

Fucking hell I'd managed to repress this. Thanks for the trauma /u/mutsuto.
Lets see, the earth cast a round shadow on the moon regardless of orientation. Proof enough for me. It doesn't take an astrophysicist to rap your head around that.
Essentially, B.O.B is claiming that the earth is flat and posts all sorts of quotes and pictures claiming that they're proof that the earth is flat. His twitter is full of these "proofs". Neil deGrasse Tyson, being the man of science he is, called Bob out on it on twitter, explaining why his claims are false. Think of it as another MeekMill/Drake debate except less intense.

It has to be a publicity stunt. B.o.B hasn't really been on the radar as of late, but now he's pasted all over social media.

Honestly, when I heard this stuff I wasn't that surprised. I liked BoB up until after strange clouds. But his mixtape released after the adventures of BoB was called "no genre" and it had songs about people making HIV and infecting black people IIRC so I think he may just believe in weird stuff.
Beaudism ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 20:52:01 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
And infecting black people. Hahahaha haha.
JerfFoo ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 00:04:05 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It sounds funny, but there's grains of truth to it. Because black people/minorities are disproportionately poor, they're disproportionately impacted by certain bad policies. For example, there was a state that used to have a needle exchange policy where anybody could come in and exchange a used needle for a clean one, no questions asked. Some areas have drug problems, and needle exchanges are a fantastic way of reducing the spread of diseases. But, the state gave up and ended it's needle exchange program, and then as a direct result certain diseases spread like wildfire. This affected minorities more then most, so, they feel targeted by bad policies like that.
Beaudism ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 00:09:52 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Those sort of harm reduction programs still exist but they're obviously fewer and further between because the general opinion of the population (being as ignorant as it may) was not in favor of it. They think it facilitates drug usage, when it actually just prevents death. They don't understand people are going to use drugs regardless.
They think it facilitates drug usage, when it actually just prevents death. They don't understand people are going to use drugs regardless.
Actually, it's more malicious than that. I live in a very conservative area of Ohio, and the general attitude is "let them die, the rest of us will be better off." There is a distinct lack of compassion for addicts.
JerfFoo ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:25:02 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Sure. And I'm sure there's more examples of different kinds of policies that make minorities feel targeted by the government, that's just the only one I know of off the top of my head.
And I agree with you, especially today. Most people are just ignorant about how reality works, and aren't intentionally targeting the lower class. But, there are still blacks alive today who remember not being allowed to use the same bathrooms/entrances as white people when they were younger. Even as recently as a handful of decades ago there actually were laws that specifically targeted black people. Legislated racism isn't as far behind us as most people imagine.

I can't speak to the creation of HIV, only to black people feeling intentionally targeted.
Yeah, he's using hyperbole that has some roots in reality. Make friends with a black activist and/or read some black activist literature. I don't agree that black people are intentionally targeted, but it's 100% the truth that certain bad policies disproportionately effect blacks/minorities more then white people. When you watch legislature get passed, and then watched the neighborhood around you crumble even more as a direct result, you'd probably feel intentionally targeted too.

I mean, I've heard of flat Earth conspiracy theorists, but it is a really fringe group, even compared to other fringe groups. I could absolutely see a celebrity believing in young-Earth creationism, and even a lot of mystical ghosts & spirits stuff. But he is way too mainstream to believe in a flat Earth. I would be very surprised if this wasn't a publicity stunt.
Flatline isn't an album, it's simply his Neil Degrasse Tyson diss track. However, B.o.B has come out with two conspiracy-heavy mixtapes in the last few months, the first called Water and the second, which came out a few days ago, called Fire. To promote those, he's been discussing all sorts of strange conspiracies on Twitter, which led to the NDG beef.
Flatline isn't an album, it's just the name of the diss track he made for Neil...

See, I couldn't tell whether I was just too old and out of touch with pop (both true, and I've distanced myself from pop since I was a teen anyway so I'm well out of the loop now) so I can't tell if BoB is bigger and more recognized than Tyson and just acting like an idiot, or if he was just baiting him to get a bump from the rebuttals. I'd never heard of him until this went down and I see NDT everywhere... but I'm a geek, so my take on it's sure to be skewed.

American rapper BoB has taken his claims that the Earth is flat and written a rap
Rappers are getting lazy with their names. I can't wait for that song by Matthew feat. Frank to come out, though.
Short answer BoB goes on rant on Twitter claiming earth is flat. Has tons of pictures to prove it. Then Neil goes on Twitter as well. Now here's where other commenters are missing out. Neil's nephew? Is a rapper who made a diss song featuring Neil called Flat to fact. It's hilarious and on sound cloud I'll try to find link but on mobile.
Actually, I like your wording. We all know how we feel on the issue of flat earth. Given the purpose of this sub, I think it's a good habit to always represent each side equally regardless of how absurd you think one side is. Opinion is the kind of thing that belongs in second level comments, not the top level response...

I don't know. I know a lot of people who believe the world is flat just because it stays so in the Bible. Some people just can't be reasoned with.
obeetwo2 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 20:20:59 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Where does the bible say that? I'm genuinely curious, I haven't heard of that before and I've read a lot of the bible.
[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 20:42:45 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There are a few lines that don't make sense unless it is implying the Earth is flat, such as talking about corners of the Earth and saying in one place that you could see the entire Earth from the top of a mountain (which is impossible with a sphere). Its closest reference to the shape says circle, not sphere. Genesis also describes the cosmology in a way that seems to imply Earth looks like a snowglobe.
All of the references seem to match a map of Babylonian cosmology from the same time frame. It isn't a large stretch to just assume the Hebrews thought the same.
There really aren't any references to a sphere. The circle passage is the closest.
obeetwo2 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:58:40 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's taking the bible extreeeemely literally. That first example in Daniel is just saying the tree was big. Well someone might have asked "wow bow big?" Well how do you give magnitude to a huge tree? When someone says "there's deer as far as the eye can see," I don't think someone should be there saying, really? Because my eyes can see pretty far man. Same with "every eye can see him," its just saying that he will appear to all, which given the context that the bible says God created the world and universe, isn't the most far out thing in the bible. I expected verses from like Leviticus saying "yo the earth is flat," but you just took metaphors and took them literally.
What you interpret as a metaphor, others interpret as literal. There are other examples, such as describing the shape of the world as a circle (the word used means flat circle, not round like a ball or rock). If you choose to interpret this as a metaphor, then it means circle like the circle of life.
It's easy to say they're metaphors now, but the same verses were once used to "prove" the world is flat.
Same with "earth-centered" universe verses in the Bible. They're biblical metaphors now, buy they were considered literal verses a thousand years ago.
obeetwo2 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:30:35 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I don't know one person that would take "as far as the corners of the Earth" as actually corners of the earth. Once again your if it was used to "prove" the world is flat or that the earth is the center of the universe I'm gonna need a source for that claim.
Geostaticism agreed with aย literal interpretationย of Scripture in several places, such as1 Chronicles 16:30,ย Psalm 93:1,Psalm 96:10,ย Psalm 104:5,Ecclesiastes 1:5ย (in contrast withJob 26:7).ย
Well Magic, Nothing on You, Don't Let Me fall were all good. He reached the top 100 a few more times after that, but his second album and afterwords were all dirty rap and stuff after. His only good collab was Price Tag where he was ft. on
macutchi ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:15:57 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Do people not realize this is exactly the reaction he wanted? People who make these ridiculous "new science" claims just want attention and telling them they're wrong is just fuel for them.
Sure, but it also gives some positive exposure to real science. The only "sides" in this debate seem to be people who have heard of this guy, and people who haven't - but everyone seems to agree he's an idiot.
He'll get his 15 minutes (or seconds) of fame for this, but I doubt it's going to help his career in the long-term.
What exposure does this give real science? Do you think this will convince more people that the Earth is round? That's pretty common knowledge. Anyone who refutes that is still going to refute that, this isn't going to change anyone's mind. It's not about opinion or misinformation, it's just a fact that the Earth is round. There's no need to justify that. If anything, this gives negative exposure.
Bob used to be incredibly popular man. He's not a new artist or an unknown person.

BOB started tweeting about hos he believes the earth is flat, and provided what he thought was proof. Neil then intercepted this crazy train of thought and provided evidence as to why he is wrong, and of course, BOB got offended and diss tracks ensued.
B.O.B. is a conspiracy theorist. He believes in Illuminati, Free Masons, Government Clones and etc. He also believes that the earth is flat and recently started posting a bunch of "proofs" on twitter that also reference Neil Degrasse Tyson in them.
Neil Degrasse Tyson replied to him explaining why he was wrong and this caused B.O.B. to release a diss track towards him called "Flat Line". You can listen to the track and read the lyrics here
I don't think you guys realized how big B.o.B was in the rap community. he has fans, not as much as he used to, but many people know him.

I spent a few minutes verifying the math the BoB has been quoting on his feed, and I realize some major problems:
BoB has no understanding that the earth isn't perfectly round (not everything is assumed to be at a height of sea level), the circumference isn't exactly 25k miles (it's an approximation), even the sea itself isn't perfectly round (tidal changes caused by the moon/sun).
Hell, 2 perfectly good ways to show him.
Watch Felix Baumgartner make a world record jump. The curvature of the earth is completely visible, and there are many recording that show ascent in real-time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvbN-cWe0A0
Ask him, if the earth is flat, how can you fly from the US to Europe, then Asia, then back to the US?
I get that math won't work on him, since he doesn't understand how rounding works or how it affects results.

It's like if you took the worst of /x/ and /pol/ and blended them together into a mix of absolutely batshit tinfoilers.

linearcore ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 01:00:56 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
The student may use any of the three standard coordinate systems discussed in the text.
henryshock ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:13:48 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well, the first picture is clearly someone on their way to the Great Ice Wall. Probably a witch. The hat's a giveaway. The second picture is some sort of blue round thing with swirls and is very pretty but also probably the work of witches.
I never establish origins in Minkowski space because I'm not that kind of girl but if you'd like to know anything else about beachballs, drop me a line and maybe we can camp out and talk about it while toasting marshmallows or heretics or something.
LittleLui ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:15:44 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Romero1993 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:34:50 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
This made me think, on a beach ball there is no set bottom side because the bottom side is relative to how you hold it or how it's positioned on the ground - but if you turn it upside down then the bottom is now the top and the top is the bottom... right?

It's funny if you've listened to him he's gone from "Conscious Hip-Hop" to "Pop Rap" to "Mainstream Rap" to "saying the world is flat to get people to download his new mixtape"

BoB about a month ago was just some rapper from a
longtime ago that had a few great songs. Now he is the middle of every bodies eye, and a name being brought up in house holds. Rappers have a history of lying to get haters so they are more popular.Edit: Crossed out the word long as it was getting me a lot of hate mail about being a retarded 13 year old kid who knows nothing. I just wanted the point of this to be, I would guess BoB is well educated, and is smarter than we are giving credit for.

TheDiplo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:51:14 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Nah artist are just the molders of trends. They pick a medium and apply trends to that medium to get their message out. Jay Z has a song called "moment of clarity" when he explains it pretty well
"I dumbed down for my audience
And doubled my dollas
They criticized me for it
Yet they all yell "holla!"
If lyrics sold, truth be told
I'd probably be, lyrically Talib Kweli
Truthfully I want to rhyme like Common Sense
(but I did 5mil)
I haven't been rhyming like Common since"
WhamBamMaam ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:17:43 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

TheDiplo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:21:34 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
WhamBamMaam ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:26:05 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

A popular science figure who narrated a pretty popular cable science program and has done interviews on plenty of others. I guarantee you if you poll my demographic (I'm 40) WAY more people know about Neil than BoB.

Crassusinyourasses ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:40:51 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Crassusinyourasses ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 20:57:34 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Coastreddit ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:02:31 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Sue me.

annaftw ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 19:16:56 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Wow. It's just keeps getting worse.
Here are some gems from B.o.B.'s song.
David Irving is a known and outspoken Holocaust denier, by the way.
Sauder appears to be some sort of crazy conspiracy theorist.
Also he repeats "There's no superior bloodline" in the chorus throughout the song. While that might be the only thing I agree with in the song, I fail to see what this has to do with his support for the Flat Earth Theory.

Dima110 ยท 125 points ยท Posted at 18:04:35 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They don't understand people are going to use drugs regardless.
karmicviolence ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:35:44 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

He hasn't been musically relevant for a few years now. A lot of other rappers question his "street cred" and his borderline pop/rap.
He's trying to be a Lupe Fiasco without any of the actual social awareness now.

Flatline isn't an album, it's simply his Neil Degrasse Tyson diss track. However, B.o.B has come out with two conspiracy-heavy mixtapes in the last few months, the first called Water and the second, which came out a few days ago, called Fire. To promote those, he's been discussing all sorts of strange conspiracies on Twitter, which led to the NDG beef.

obeetwo2 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 20:20:59 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The circle passage is the closest.
ecafyelims ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:29:19 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
A few examples:
obeetwo2 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:58:40 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's taking the bible extreeeemely literally. That first example in Daniel is just saying the tree was big. Well someone might have asked "wow bow big?" Well how do you give magnitude to a huge tree? When someone says "there's deer as far as the eye can see," I don't think someone should be there saying, really? Because my eyes can see pretty far man. Same with "every eye can see him," its just saying that he will appear to all, which given the context that the bible says God created the world and universe, isn't the most far out thing in the bible. I expected verses from like Leviticus saying "yo the earth is flat," but you just took metaphors and took them literally.
ecafyelims ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:03:02 on January 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Polycystic ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:37:59 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Sure, but it also gives some positive exposure to real science. The only "sides" in this debate seem to be people who have heard of this guy, and people who haven't - but everyone seems to agree he's an idiot.
He'll get his 15 minutes (or seconds) of fame for this, but I doubt it's going to help his career in the long-term.
bassinastor ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:54:29 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

His name is fucking Tyson for a reason. An easy to identify moniker of the guy you don't fuck with.

I get that math won't work on him, since he doesn't understand how rounding works or how it affects results.

This has to be a publicity stunt. BoB, NDT, and NDT's nephew all gain from it.

You should write a book about this so BoB can use it in one of his conspiracy Twitter rants.

Damnnn! Tysons Nephew straight killed it on that track. I am not one to be a big fan of that genre, but since the Drake diss thing, I gotta say, Tyons Nephew was so on point and killed it. SCIENCE!!!!!

Ur kidding right? I'm not into rap either but Tysons response was cringy af
KilrBe3 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:01:16 on January 27, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
diss tracks are usually cringe, and its expected to be a tad cringe.. but that's what happens when you get a moron like BoB dipping into Science...
wasn't bad, or great, but its 'diss' was given to BoB fairly well.

How come so many rappers are straight up retarded with some of their views.
Mos def is another good example.
Do they not teach critical thinking to them?
