But making it look that messy takes effort. Like, you have to try to get huge smeared letters. ...if you have a frosting bag.
If they didn't, and tried to use a spoon, or pour it on there, then I could see this happening.
Edit: My wife is a professional cake artist. I asked her. She said if it was a store-bought tube of frosting, that was old and separated, then it could have dripped like that.

While they did do a shitty job of writing, red icing does bleed into white. At the Baskin Robbins I worked at as a teenager they used to write with white icing then write on top with the red frosting to act as a buffer so it doesn't get everything.
none of the letters are connected with red icing. how would you explain someone who insists that the icing was pouring out everywhere but was somehow able to not connect any letters?
It may not entirely be bullshit, there was another Tumblr post that went viral joking about only putting the word "BIRTH" in a birthday card and nothing else so the poster was likely referencing that. Can't comment on whether the icing was actually running tho
This is actually kind of a funny cake, but it's ruined by the dumb story. A cake with just BIRTH on it makes me laugh. Once for my birthday a friend brought a cake with just my name in huge caps letters on it, and it was hilarious to me for some reason. It made me laugh to just see TOPH on a cake with no other words.

Originally the intention for the joke was just the word BIRTH in order to be absurdist or jokingly bland (like Dwight in The Office who made an "It is your Birthday." banner) , but since screenshot friend is terrible at cake decoration, it made red icing look like blood smears.
I could see this actually happening accidentally. By the sounds of it the icing was coming out of the bag all over the cake, and they just horribly went about trying to make something out of it.

While they did do a shitty job of writing, red icing does bleed into white. At the Baskin Robbins I worked at as a teenager they used to write with white icing then write on top with the red frosting to act as a buffer so it doesn't get everything.

This is actually kind of a funny cake, but it's ruined by the dumb story. A cake with just BIRTH on it makes me laugh. Once for my birthday a friend brought a cake with just my name in huge caps letters on it, and it was hilarious to me for some reason. It made me laugh to just see TOPH on a cake with no other words.

This one seems plausible, hear me out.
Originally the intention for the joke was just the word BIRTH in order to be absurdist or jokingly bland (like Dwight in The Office who made an "It is your Birthday." banner) , but since screenshot friend is terrible at cake decoration, it made red icing look like blood smears.

I could see this actually happening accidentally. By the sounds of it the icing was coming out of the bag all over the cake, and they just horribly went about trying to make something out of it.
