While we're at it, what's the word for what you're username is doing with word sounds? It's like rhyming, but not quite. Like what they do in season 4 of Bojack Horseman with Courtney Portnoy's name.

I don't know if /u/snkn179 meant to reply to you, but he is correct - you pronouncing it differently to someone else doesn't make one of you is "wrong", we just speak different dialects. Don't let anyone tell you anyone's accent is incorrect English - it might not be received pronounciation, but that doesn't make it wrong.
There's definitely a vowel pronounved after the w. I didn't have the bowl-shaped-what-do-you-call-it available or any idea how to look it up.

There's no right or wrong, it's different depending on your accent. The other guy used IPA so translating that into English sounds, he was just saying that some people say 'vow-welz' like you, whereas other people say 'vowlz' like himself (and me).

Unrelated stupid question, I allways wanted to learn how to read that IPA (?) stuff.
I think artifexian had some youtube videos about learning IPA. There is a pattern to understanding the names of the sounds, but if you just want to be able to read dictionary entries and other phonetic stuff just memorising the phonemes in English will suffice (so not all of those sounds need to be memorised). The other stuff is more useful if you are interested in linguistics/pronouncing things from other languages - interesting, but not everyones idea of interesting.

This is all IPA, the /ส/ is the vowel in put - /aส/ is like fowl or powder. /ษ/ is like the sound in the "se" in serrated, or "po" in potential (usually written as "uh" if you don't use IPA). Maybe you say it like /vaสwษlz/ ?

I think there might be some miscommunication here.
/vaสlz/ is not meant to be read as an English word. It's spelled out using the International Phonetic Alphabet (as evidenced by the slashes and, well, the use of ส, which is not a letter in the English language). Precisely because in English, spelling is not always indicative of pronunciation. Each sign in IPA corresponds to a sound.
Speaking of which, "balls" in IPA would be written as /bษหlz/ (or /bษlz/, depending on dialect).
The glide and the vowel before it are sperate, and sone of us pronounce a vowel butween it and the l.

depends on the analysis I guess. But diphthongs are generally considered unitary phonemes in English. And yeah some people pronounce it as two syllables, so you might say it's /vaสฬฏษlz/ or /vaสฬฏ.lฬฉz/
More or less, sometimes letters are silent, or 2 letters make the same sound, or are x. In the word "the", for example, t and h make one consonant, so it has 3 letters but 2 phonemes

It's how you teach children to read. By teaching them the individual sounds so that they can 'sound out' and blend them to read words. It's how you can read a word that you've never seen before.

Phonemes can correspond to letters one-to-one, but in English, they often don't. A phoneme is a single sound (to simplify). A word like "dog" will have a letter corresponding to each phoneme (it has three phonemes, and three letters). A word like "thorough" will not (it has 8 letters and only four phonemes).

I think there might be some miscommunication here.
/vaสlz/ is not meant to be read as an English word. It's spelled out using the International Phonetic Alphabet (as evidenced by the slashes and, well, the use of ส, which is not a letter in the English language). Precisely because in English, spelling is not always indicative of pronunciation. Each sign in IPA corresponds to a sound.
Speaking of which, "balls" in IPA would be written as /bษหlz/ (or /bษlz/, depending on dialect).

depends on the analysis I guess. But diphthongs are generally considered unitary phonemes in English. And yeah some people pronounce it as two syllables, so you might say it's /vaสฬฏษlz/ or /vaสฬฏ.lฬฉz/

More or less, sometimes letters are silent, or 2 letters make the same sound, or are x. In the word "the", for example, t and h make one consonant, so it has 3 letters but 2 phonemes

It's how you teach children to read. By teaching them the individual sounds so that they can 'sound out' and blend them to read words. It's how you can read a word that you've never seen before.

Phonemes can correspond to letters one-to-one, but in English, they often don't. A phoneme is a single sound (to simplify). A word like "dog" will have a letter corresponding to each phoneme (it has three phonemes, and three letters). A word like "thorough" will not (it has 8 letters and only four phonemes).
