Been playing Minecraft since 2009, I wanted to ask if you've thought of adding boss mobs to minecraft. So like a massive creeper with a crown?

Cave maps could almost have their own biomes. Some areas would be composed of smaller winding caves, but then other areas would just be gigantic caverns with underground rivers and such. Maybe even trees that grow underground

What if there was an option for changing the ore distribution, almost like Dwarf Fortress? A long time ago, there was a real miner on /r/minecraft, and he noted that in real life, coal veins, for example, are pretty rare, but you can expect TONS of coal from them. And for gold, you could be digging for four days straight, find a gold vein, and the next day you have a gold house.

May I suggest something along the lines of a Coral Reef biome then? It'd make exploring underwater interesting, make custom underwater maps more interesting and could even add some more cool blocks. Maybe like a Shark spawner, a hostile underwater mob?

It is a shame that the ocean is not terrifying. In MinecCraft, swimming in the middle of the ocean is one of the safest outdoor places you can be... but if I was swimming in the middle of the ocean in Real Life, I would be TERRIFIED!

A problem with fish is that it will be a lot of mob entities that you very rarely will see. We'd have to come up with a smarter system to handle loading and unloading of water mobs.

The darkness of water only depends on how deep it is, so it sounds like differentiating lakes and oceans and rivers might do the trick here (I believe minecraft already darkens deep water though it might be too dark for my tastes last I checked).

This sounds like a good idea to me. I once went exploring in one direction and ran into an ocean. I gave up after 10,000 blocks out of boredom.

I have a few questions:

• Are we going to see more added to the water? For example: fish that we can see, coral reefs, dangerous water mobs that appear in dark water.

• Will wolves ever get more features? I've always wished that could carry supplies, or had a whistle to command them in groups.

• Will the End ever get an over haul much like the Nether did?

• Can we look towards more minerals in the future? One mod that I always liked was an explosive mineral, that could only be mined with a special pick, otherwise it would explode.

• Have we seen the end of redstone additions? Pistons and Double-stone torches changed everything :)

I love how looking back at this post, Jeb has accomplished absolutely everything that he had planned. Compare that to some other games, or organizations, where ideas take months, if not years to expand on. This is just part of what makes Minecraft my personal favorite.

Ores purpose can initally be purely decorative, people would still love that. You could then go on to make a purpose for them if needs be. The game is largely about making creations, why not give people more options with regards to creating?

While, in theory I agree with the paid content idea, the problem I have is multiplayer. It's already an issue with servers trying to keep up with all the new updates, having to keep track of paid expansions would just make it messier, as people would get it at different times, or not get it at all

Notch promised all future content would be included in Alpha. I think people can sue if he falls back on that promise. That's the reason his lawyers told him to change it for beta.

Minecraft and just Mojang in general doesn't seem like the DLC... type. But if DLC was added, I wouldn't really like if certain players got it for free. I've been around since early Beta, and am constantly seeing Alpha and Indev/Infdev players asking for free capes, free copies of Minecraft XLBA or PE, etc. Nothing against you personally, it just doesn't seem like a very good system to put in place.

Not really. At least, not in my opinion. I think people are wanting more gems, ores with new abilities, fuels maybe, new things to make armor out of, maybe even a recipe for chain mail. I'm not sure which mod it is, but the Tekkit pack does this incredibly well. Tin, copper, emeralds, sapphires, rubies, tungsten, silver, all kinds of goodies. It's never boring when you mine.

Get rid of randomization. It's neat, mathematically, but it doesn't make for a very good game. It's really aggravating when you can drop over 40 levels on a diamond pickaxe and get level 3 silk touch. Not that there's anything wrong with silk touch OR lvl 3 enchants, but it's just not what I want. That's kind of a shitty feeling for your players, and you don't want your players to feel that shitty over something they don't really have any control over.

Instead, why not make it so you can choose how many of your current levels you can put into an enchantment of your choice, and the power of the enchantment is a function of the amount of experience you drop?

For example. Awesome_Jeb wants to put the unbreaking enchant on an iron pickaxe. For every 1 level he puts in, the odds of the pickaxe degrading drops by like... 1.5%

So if Awesome_Jeb, (who is dashing and intelligent without coming off as smarmy) puts 0 levels into the enchantment, each use of the enchantment has a 100% chance of degradation.

1lvl=98.5% 2lvl=96% 25lvl=62.5% 50lvl=25%

ok, so 1.5 was a bit much. But that can be tweaked, and anyway, it wouldn't carry over to enchantments like fortune and water breathing.

Clearly fortune should be made more difficult to get than efficiency. What if an enchantment like fortune needed a resource, like gold or lapis lazuli? I like this idea because it keeps fortune more difficult, and because it gives me more reasons to get underground minerals.

Oh thank the gods. Enchanting has, to be frank, marred a pretty well balanced game. PvP used to be fun, now everyone just grinds and is then invincible. I'm excited to see how you fix it.

It would be nice to have... some measure of knowledge or even minor control over your enchants, it's kind of a let down to throw 17 levels into a pick and get Efficiency II, after spending 8 levels on a different pick and getting Efficiency II and Unbreakable II.

It's contrary to everything else in MC. First of all being based on luck at what you are actually getting, WTF?! I'm not going to spend hours grinding XP for some random echantment that might be utter crap.

Just making level progression linear would go a long way though (for a quick fix). And it should be possible to re-enchant an item. That way I could at least reenchant that diamond tool until I get something I actually want.

The biggest problem I have with it is that, unless you do the best enchantment possible at your level, you're spending much more experience when you're at a high level. A level 10 enchantment when you're at level 10 costs so much less experience than a level 10 enchantment at level 50.

I realize this is a little late but I like the random element of the enchanting system but I dislike HOW random it is. From a level 50 enchant something you can get something like:

Diamond Pickaxe
Effciency V
Fortune III
Unbreaking III

and...

Diamond Pickaxe
Unbreaking III

Which is really disappointing when you get a crappy one.

My suggestion would be to make all enchants have a minimum level but no max level and when you enchant something it will choose an enchant at random (with a weight system) and take away the minimum level + X and then keep adding enchants until it runs out of XP.

Also, enchants like Smite, Bane and X Protection are really disappointing when above level 3 they should be half + half Sharpness/Protection.

Please just make it a cost/buy system.

The enchanting system doesn't have to be revolutionary from every other game, please just make it fair and not ridiculously tedious...like it is right now.

If I may be so bold, this idea may be horrible, but I hope I may have something worthwhile that you can steal.

Have Enchantment books randomly drop in chests in Dungeons, strongholds, abandoned mines, etc, that correspond to every enchantment type currently in the game.

The books would have certain qualities. Say you have a book of Efficiency: It would list the probabilities that using this book gets you Efficiency 1, 2,3, 4, or 5 in percentages, and a level requirement to actually be able to reach those levels. For example, a book might read

"Book of Efficiency:

Level 1 50% Requires level 6

Level 2 25% Requires level 15

Level 3 15% Requires level 24

Level 4 6 % Requires Level 35

Level 5 4 % Requires Level 47

The magic happens when the percentage points, and the required levels, can vary between books, so that another book of Efficiency may offer a much higher chance of a level 5 enchantment at a much lower level.

The Enchantment table itself would then have 4, or how ever many enchantments can possibly be placed on an item, new slots into which the books can be placed along side the weapon or tool, which are then applied to the weapon according to their probabilities.

I think at least some of this has the benefit of encouraging exploration and dungeon diving to find more chests, and it does reduce the frustration of enchanting, in that you're not going to end up wasting a diamond pickaxe and 50 levels to merely get Efficiency 3 or something on it. While there is still randomness and unpredictability, that unpredictability is far more manageable than it currently is, and the player can have a far more meaningful impact on the enchantments, and the levels of the enchantments he or she actually gets.

I know you have more important things to work on, but now that you have the bukkit team there is an option that saves you time and adds variety.

Just contact some of the more popular plugin developers and see if they would collaborate with you to make a suggested mod pack. Link it on the download page.

Is it at all possible to outsource some of the better and more reasonable suggestions to capable/esteemed modders? Hell maybe you could even try asking to use some of the better mods code. It would make adding a lot of new features easy on your part, you just might have to work out the bugs and whatnot.

I really wish you'd get on the third part. The ONLY thing that keeps me from enjoying Minecraft to the fullest extent is the lack of a mod API. I know it's a lot of fun implementing new things often, but prioritization is essential as well. I know you can do it, so please do.

As the old saying goes, the best thing to improve performance is to optimise an algorithm, not go looking for shaving off cycles here-and-there. Java (and others) are great for thinking big and throwing algorithm ideas around IMO, because they're quicker to get an idea to realisation than say C++ [having worked with both, and now primarily C#, myself]. Woot.

I have to disagree on this one. Java has some inherent clunkiness (memory management) that is evident in Minecraft. Of course, without seeing the source, I can't comment on how well this is avoided. For Java, though, Minecraft is one of the best games I've seen.

What is your opinion of Microsoft technologies?

It's like a race. Sure, it comes down to the skill of the driver. But having a fast car doesn't hurt, and one cannot deny that modern C languages and their graphics libraries are a quicker car for this kind of race.

Java has to interpret code before it can do anything with it, this is why it is slower than say C++. Java also has automatic memory management ,but it isn't the best. That's not to say that Minecraft is slow because of Java, but it does share some of the blame.

I believe the game is slow because it has to render a lot more than it needs to. If you've ever had blocks glitch and become little windows to the earth, than you've seen caves and tunnels that are still being rendered. Minecraft renders everything that is within a certain area that is hitting empty (or air if you prefer) blocks.

Better occlusion is needed, but that is only one of the many things that could be done.

Minecraft doesn't have a lot of assets to load into memory compared to other games. Vanilla has only a handful of small textures that it needs to hold and all the models are made in code, which saves memory. I'm unsure how sound is handled, but I can't imagine that it's too bad considering sound is almost never a problem, at least for me.

Could you tell us in what kind of direction the village content is going?

I would love to see villagers expand their village, gather resources and actually build walls and other buildings.

I'm not 100% sure on how town generation works currently, but my guess is not having them be their own biome allows them to integrate into the world more seamlessly. As their own biome, you would need a town biome for each specific existing biome. It'd look a little odd if a grassy town biome just popped up in the middle of a desert, or a snowy one.

Keep villages the way they are. Make city biomes. Normal city with villagers. Zombie city...with zombies

I have to tell you I love this idea. This is amazing. There comes a point in every singleplayer world where it feels like you're invincible when you're in the overworld. But if the mobs kept getting more difficult...

Also, I would like to thank you for making it so zombies can smash wooden doors. This is great, and adds a sense of danger and excitement. Are there any plans to add more things like that? Like skeletons smashing windows with arrows or something?

A good idea I've seen pop up here before is that more difficult mobs would occur past a certain radius from spawn, making exploration a greater risk for reward, and perhaps allowing the spawn area to be a gentler region.

I always thought it would be really cool to have harder XP based biomes. For example a Dragon's Roost or Volcano if you have enough XP (or have been playing long enough). Is this even possible with how terrain generation is handled now or would it require a fundamental rework of everything?

My solution to harder mobs was having their difficulty increase the deeper you dig, relative to your depth from the surface.

That stays with the "scalability" of minecraft quite nicely.

I would suggest that the further you are from spawn, the harder mobs will be. Make it scale very slowly so that there is still a large area that a player can play at generally the same difficulty, but it would be cool if higher level and diverse mobs spawned at further distances so that the game would be as difficult as you wanted. Or, you could create "danger" biomes with an ominous combination of fog that keeps the region dark, steep dangerous cliffs, etc, that are more likely to load further from spawn, or whatever. Also, treasures would be exciting.

Fun? FUN? It would be spec-fucking-tacular! It would reinvigorate Minecraft's combat and adventure aspects, which despite the valiant efforts of the adventure update, still remain largely primitive. Do it!

I love that you listen to the community. I remember that i suggested the crafting recipe for fence gates. Little things like that being in the game really knit the community together.

This guy could help you with modifying the sound engine.

Please don't neglect sound. To me, it's at least as important as visuals. I would joyously download an optional 1GB sound file that added biome/elevation-specific sounds, and a few hundred more variations for each mob.

Have you considered open-sourcing the game or giving access to volunteer developers to assist with this? I know it's your company's IP and you need to make money somehow, but I think there are tons of developers out there who would love to help with some of the bugs/improvements you can't get to any time soon.

The sound engine is separate from the sounds and music that it plays, so c418 would not necessarily know the answer to the question.

New ores and tools are the most commonly made things by first time mod makers, there are litereally thousands of different ores or tools you could put in as mods.

There is a reason it's done so frequently, it's shallow. You need new INTERESTING reasons to have ores, and just a new level of tools isn't gonna cut it. Same with tools, if all they do is break a new type of ore, why waste time on that when we could be developing new mobs or mob AI.

If there's one thing I would ask they not waste ANY time on it would be new ores unless they have some MEANINGFUL use, like redstone. If it's just another ore like iron/gold then it's a waste of valuable time.

It would make me very happy to see at least a few of them. For example, invisibility potions would be cool, especially if you could use them bug-free on SMP. Night vision potion is in the code, I think... Maybe that could be made with gold, diamond (crushed into something?), glowstone, or similar.

How about Copper ore? Copper conducts electricity. You could perhaps find a way to include it with redstone.

Taking a quick scan of Wikipeda for ores I see a couple of possible interest.

Marble would be beautiful without technical function. Make it be for aesthetics and make it rare. Stumbling upon it's white mass would be a glorious find!
