Up till now, all we've seen are flailing limbs. Markus can animate stuff fairly well, it seems.

I'm curious to see what kind of hardware that's being tested on as well... I have a feeling it won't be that smooth when i boot up the game.

oobey · 142 points · Posted at 17:39:02 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

It's nothing unusual, Notch develops Minecraft on a "Recommended Spec" machine to keep things playable: a dual six-core Xeon 5600 rig with 48 gigs of RAM and a three-way Geforce GTX 590 SLI for video.

If you have anything close to that you should be able to run Minecraft with no issues.

Skithy · 18 points · Posted at 17:51:41 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I'm still uncertain as to why certain people have issues, and certain people dont. My old laptop, a C2D/8600GT-M/2GB DDR2 ran it with render distance on 'far' at 25+FPS. Both my current machines, a low-end and a high-end quad core with a 5770 and a 6770 respectively, run at 60+FPS. Both have six gigs of RAM.

I've got a friend with a high-end Core 2 Duo, GTX 260, and four gigs of ram that gets 20-25FPS. Another of my friends has an i5, GTX 460, and 4GB DDR3, gets 'out of memory' all the time. Yet another has a Toshiba/Radeon Integrated, and a low end AMD processor, and with render on Medium he gets a pretty solid framerate.

Computers are weeeeird.

oobey · 9 points · Posted at 17:56:25 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

It is probably 32/64-bit issues. Make sure all of your friends (if you care) are running the appropriate jre, and only the appropriate jre, on their system. People with 64-bit CPUs shouldn't even have the 32-bit jre on their system at all.

AndrewNeo · 9 points · Posted at 18:29:58 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Some of us have to :( (Android SDK doesn't work with 64-bit Java, but fortunately both can be installed)

[deleted] · 3 points · Posted at 20:08:28 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

It also has to do with integrated graphics switching on laptops not recognizing Java as a game.

Cure_Tap · 2 points · Posted at 23:47:15 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I have never heard this before and I've tried everything I can think of to boost Minecraft's FPS (and I still only get about 15-20 frames per second at best).

TEACH ME YOUR WAYS, QUADATOMIC. EXPLAIN IT TO ME LIKE I AM 5. I AM NOT VERY GOOD WITH COMPUTER.

AngrySnail · 2 points · Posted at 04:49:37 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Wrong dude, but here a short version: Some laptops have both, a slow-as-fuck integrated graphics solution, most likely from Intel, and a faster but power hungry graphics card, most likely a NVidia thing, which can be switched on demand. On desktop/office/browsing etc., you use the simple Intel graphics saving tons of time on your battery. When you switch to a game, you (should) automatically switch to the more powerful second card. Problem is, Java games are not recognized, and you stay on aforementioned slow-as-fuck integrated (Intel) card. If this is the case, you will have to force switching to the more powerful card by hand. Not literally, tough.

For NVidia, the software for switching is called Optimus. Not sure about Ati.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 06:18:05 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Also optifine that shit.

Cure_Tap · 1 points · Posted at 07:01:36 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

I've already Optifine'd that shit, and have been tweaking with the settings, but the best I can seriously get is 15-20 fps. This just about what I used to get in Alpha (if not slightly less), but in the past few months, my game has been running at 5-10 fps on average.

I've already ensured that I have the 64-bit version of Java, have tried both allocating more memory and reducing the amount used on startup, and have been playing around with Optifine for a bit now. I think I'm basically fucked with this laptop.

Upon looking up reviews and exactly what hardware I have for my laptop, I've come to the conclusion that this is as good as it gets. My laptop (an HP dv6-1230us) is not designed for gaming, or really any sort of stressful loads. Which is fine, since save for Minecraft, I really don't use it to play online games. Still though, Minecraft is not really a graphics intensive game. It's disappointing. =/

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 15:20:56 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

If it is running Minecraft through the Intel integrated graphics, nothing else in the computer will help it. It isn't called a hardware bottleneck for nothing...

freeforall079 · 2 points · Posted at 18:32:26 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

It is fine to have both installed on 64-bit systems.

We have detected you may be viewing this page in a 64-bit browser. If you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers.

oobey · 2 points · Posted at 18:38:07 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Tell that to Minecraft.

freeforall079 · 1 points · Posted at 23:22:10 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I have both installed but have it set to use the 64-bit version.

feanturi · 1 points · Posted at 03:05:30 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

I agree with this. When I built this 64-bit system back last November, I didn't consider Java versions at first. I just went to Sun with Firefox, which of course was running as a 32-bit app, and it autosuggested regular 6 and I got that. Minecraft wouldn't stay up, so I wondered if it had anything to do with 64-bit Windows since I was using the exact same .minecraft folder so it couldn't be anything else. Looked around, saw it advised specifically to have both and not remove the 32-bit. You could need bits of that depending, like what Java plugin will a 32-bit browser such as Firefox be able to use?

Anyhow, 64-bit Java went in its own folder in Program Files, while 32-bit Java remains in Program Files (x86). It's almost November again and no Java issues here.

Torlen · 2 points · Posted at 22:37:42 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Never had a single issue with Windows 7 64.

RaindropBebop · 2 points · Posted at 02:25:16 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

64bit jre doesn't function at all with 32bit browsers. There's not problem with running both simultaneously. Minecraft will pick up the appropriate one.

If you're having java problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but an object-oriented, cross-platform language ain't one. Just uninstall and reinstall if you're having problems.

Skithy · 1 points · Posted at 18:28:16 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Noted! All my systems are 64-bit, as is the Toshiba friend's. I should hope the other two are, as they both have 4+GB of RAM, but I didn't set those two up D:

Noobinabox · 1 points · Posted at 22:06:04 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

IIRC, you'll need the 32-bit JRE if you have a 32-bit browser. Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe I'm running both right now since I have 32-bit firefox.

TyIzaeL · 1 points · Posted at 00:56:18 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

People with 64-bit CPUs shouldn't even have the 32-bit jre on their system at all.

No. Your browser is likely 32-bit and thus still needs the 32-bit JRE.

Macbooks seem to run minecraft without any lag... is... is this what it feels like to be a gamer? :D

Skithy · 1 points · Posted at 01:54:43 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Yeah, my old laptop was a 2008 Macbook Pro (the one with only two gigs of RAM.) I only really played games in Windows 7 via Boot Camp, but it ran Minecraft like a beast. In fact, it ran most games really well for being a dated Mac. After it met its untimely demise at the hands of sugary beverages, I picked up the new MBP (the i7/4GB/6750 [I misspoke in my last post, it's not a 6770]) and that runs every game I've thrown at it above 40FPS, maxed+AA... Other than The Witcher 2.

As a die-hard PC fanatic, I'm incredibly impressed with Apple laptops when it comes to gaming prowess.

asharwood · 2 points · Posted at 02:31:55 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Yeah some of it is the 64bit stuff and some is just plain optimizing your system for games. I have a quad core AMD 3.10ghz, 4 gig of ram and a nvidia 9800+ graphics processor. I plan one everything maxed. View, opengl, textures, all of that. I get anywhere from 80-250 fps. 80 if I start running fast and loading far distances and if i'm just sitting still in open area ill get around 120. In caves I can reach to 250.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 21:16:28 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

My laptop plays it better than my previous work desktop did.

Laptop: Core2duo 2.53ghz, 4gb ram, Radeon 4670, Win7x64 = 200+ FPS

Desktop: i5 2500, 8gb ram, Geforce 460, Win7x64 = 60ish FPS

It's practically impossible to tell how well any computer will run minecraft. It has very strange requirements, which I hope are things that can be optimized later.

ch4os1337 · 1 points · Posted at 19:35:21 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Is that the $16000 computer from buildapc? Wait nevermind that one had 4 Geforce GTX 590's.

Max settings @1920x1080 I get 80-120fps on my 6970, people who play games on a laptop shouldn't expect to run games as well as a desktop can.

I was alone in the cave, but that didn't bother me.

While mining out ores I fought countless undead, that didn't bother me.

I faced giant sized spiders and slime beasts, pig men and flying ghosts which could breath fire, and that didn't bother me either.

But then I heard it... that awful, dreaded sound... Like a banshee in the night, it came for me. I ran and ran but I couldn't escape that terrible beast, eventually I holed myself up so that I might be safe until it goes away. I left a hole in the bottom of the wall so I might be able to see the creatures feet, but then I heard it... that horrible noise you only hear about from hushed whispers and terrified children...woopwoopwoopwoop

You could breed two monsters, one would determine the model of their offspring, and the second would determine the skin, so you could breed a Dragon with a Golem (A rock monster) and it would yield a dragon made of stone. There were tons of combinations. One of my favorite was a creature with a "water skin," so it looked as if they were made of water.

All of this 2nd-hand psychology is making this so interesting but I feel it's so fragile since (unless Notch is even more of a genius than I already feel he is) it's all coincidental and could be overturned with another decision he makes.

dotlizard · 5 points · Posted at 19:36:35 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

True, but one of the cool things about Minecraft is the ability to make up your own backstory.

But on a more practical note, with Enderdragons able to obliterate hundreds or thousands of blocks at once leaving nothing behind, it would make the Ender really suck. Ever watch one of those time-lapses of endermen left unchecked, how they erode the landscape? Imagine that, but several orders of magnitude worse. So it's nice to imagine that there would be some repairs.

thegreatuke · 5 points · Posted at 20:18:54 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I totally agree, it would be awesome if the dragon would fly through and suddenly the endermen would scurry to fix it. The sort of neuroticism adds to their mysteriousness.

dotlizard · 3 points · Posted at 20:26:56 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Oh that would be fantastic to watch. And way better than some of the previous suggestions that Endermen build some kind of weird hives or nests in the overworld.

Clearly you don't understand how multithreading works.

toxicFork · 1 points · Posted at 15:01:04 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)*

Clearly you don't understand what I was talking about. Partly my fault, I guess. If you give me a lot of threads the universe can be simulated definitely faster than the single threaded solution. More threads and more processing tome per thread will mean a faster simulation. Infinite threads on an infinitely large array of processors = perfect.

Edit: so. have one thread which works on "dropping the shit on the ground" and is separate from the main thread and you'll be set.

creepig · 1 points · Posted at 15:36:20 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Threads are not a magic wand. Infinite threads on an infinitely large array of processors will meet diminishing returns according to Amdahl's Law, because eventually there is no more speedup to be had.

Assuming an optimal situation where Minecraft's code can be optimized to 95% concurrent, the maximum speedup you'll get out of multithreading will be 20x, achieved using a whopping 2048 cores. The average quad core system will see a speedup of around 3-4x. Bear in mind that this is the optimal scenario. With a more realistic estimate of 75% concurrency, you're looking at a speedup of 2.5x on a quad core system. That's not even considering the particulars of the entity rendering system, so the actual speed increase will be far lower.

tl;dr Enderdragon dropping all of those blocks will still lag the game to shit.

toxicFork · 1 points · Posted at 15:49:50 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Please. It'll be no more than at max 64 blocks per frame(And I'm being REALLY safe here) destroyed by a single dragon. We're not talking about speedup, though, we're talking about parallelism. You can add the "blocks to drop" into a queue and then the "dropper thread" can go through 100 blocks per frame. Yeah you could do this within a single thread too, but with multiple threads your rendering thread will do its thing without being affected (other than a single push of the block ids to the shared memory) and then the other thread will process the drops.

Dropping a block is only "set block to empty, generate an entity".

Unless you have a dragon a million blocks wide, you won't even feel it.

creepig · 1 points · Posted at 16:00:18 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

There were a lot more than 64 blocks being destroyed in the pass I was referring to. It's not even the generation of the blocks that lags the fuck out of the game, it's the rendering of those entities. Have you ever been on an SMP server when someone with 10-20 levels of XP died?

Now imagine that if the server is constantly simulating an Enderdragon tearing up the End. The game would be goddamn unplayable.

Also, speedup is related to parallelism. Do you have any clue what you're talking about at all?

toxicFork · 1 points · Posted at 16:05:25 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Yeah... minecraft's rendering engine is as close as you can get to zero optimisation. Did you know that all blocks in front of you are being processed no matter if they can actually be seen or not? The program sends everything into the graphics card.

I thought we were discussing block generation/destruction (which still doesn't have any kind of real threading going on).

creepig · 1 points · Posted at 16:16:39 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

My point is that with how unoptimized the engine is, threading it is going to accomplish exactly zilch.

toxicFork · 2 points · Posted at 16:23:56 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

you're damn right on that one.

jetpacktuxedo · 1 points · Posted at 21:59:23 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Instead of having them drop, maybe have them jump to random locations in the overworld or something? That way none of the blocks actually, vanish, they just... jump.

Consider this: The Ender is made of sand. As the dragons fly around, they create caves into which the sand falls (by current sand dynamic). This creates hills and valleys which, eventually, will themselves be Enderdragon'd. If we think of the sand as extending downwards infinitely, the dragons would never actually damage the landscape.

The Ender is ever-moving.

Why... O.o, why would he? If hes showing off parts of the game I seriously doubt he would use a texture pack, and he's said it before. It's possible it's a re-textured ore but nothing else was so it seems unlikley. What reasons do you have to believe it was a texture pack?

SteelCrow · 1 points · Posted at 20:15:59 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

No more reason than anyone has to assume it's just one texture that's been changed. The texture is new. Whether it's a new ore, a single new texture, or a dev's special texture pack is impossible to tell.

That produces a color closer to brown than orange. If you want orange you may want to use CMY instead of RGB.

Shoden · 1 points · Posted at 17:25:19 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

you are right that you can see it clearer, but it still seems like a new color. They probably just changed the texture since the current color did not match what the bars looked like. Or it is a lighting thing.

[deleted] · 3 points · Posted at 22:36:26 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Iron doesn't come out of the ground all shiny. Iron ore is basically iron oxide trapped in the rock. It's gonna be all rusty and brown.

hah, interesting.. Wonder how they'll effect the Ender-landscape, with this ability? Would certainly make it unadvisable to build there.. But a little odd if the landscape turns to swiss-cheese over time. lol (Maybe normally it wont go into the ground, but instead would target anything non-ground built in the that dimension.)

Seems like there should be a fire effect for that destruction, but not sure what Notch is getting at.. Maybe Ender-Dragons don't breath fire at all, maybe they're more like Endermen with their purple-y energy.

Side note: I would think the tail should shrink down to a point at the end, instead of being thick the whole length of it. But otherwise it looks AMAZING so far!

theheyway · 208 points · Posted at 15:50:41 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

If you ask me, Notch just couldn't be assed to figure out proper collision for the dragon.

xNotch · 462 points · Posted at 17:28:28 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Partly, yes.

I've added the code for multiple segments for larger mobs so each part has its own collisions and physics. It knows if you hit it in the head or the left wing, and each part has individual player collisions, and so on. On a technical level, it works by letting each entity define a bunch of sub entities if it wishes to. The entity is fully responsible for all physics and saving and loading of the sub entities. It's working surprisingly well, and it appears to be working in multiplayer as well, although I haven't started testing the dragon in MP yet.

Originally, it hit walls and couldn't move through them. It awkwardly turned around and changed direction. The player can easily create walls on their own, and trying to make an AI to properly navigate arbitrary terrain before the code freeze next tuesday isn't feasible when there's so much more we need to do.

And since the dragon is going to start out as an overpowered boss enemy (I'm definitely adding less overpowered dragons for the main world after release), we don't want too many easy ways to deal with it, so we had a short design meeting and decided to make it cheat.

HandBanana22 · 10 points · Posted at 03:05:21 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Dragons should be able to turn into cows as their second form to spy on us while plotting to steal out gold and diamonds!

:Edit: Also we should be able to find huge mountains with twisting tunnels that lead to the dragon's lair (Maybe that's what strong holds count contain?). Where hes wrapped around a chest full or diamonds and gold, sleeping.

ronald_rager · 8 points · Posted at 03:19:27 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

That will make interesting play. Everyone would be afraid of cows and jump whenever they hear them moo.

TenNeon · 3 points · Posted at 03:58:51 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

No sounds. Because most reptiles aren't particularly vocal. Especially if they intend to eat you. If they intend to eat you, they'll just go ahead and eat you.

Mating rituals and territorial displays would be their main kinds of communication, and that would be with other dragons. That would probably involve head-bobbing and displaying brightly-colored sections of wing.

majic13 · 3 points · Posted at 08:55:13 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Pretty sure that they can bend the rules on vocalisation, given that they're huge six-limbed flying monsters of legend. Which can sometimes breathe fire.

TenNeon · 1 points · Posted at 09:01:11 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

The main world dragons should be rare and spawn with a dragons nest!

For inspiration, read The Hobbit!

The great red dragon, living in its mountain home, jealously guarding its hoard of gold, jewels, and treasures. Chest after chest of anything gold. A nice supply of diamonds, a good amount of gold bars and ingots, and a whole bunch of golden swords and armor! Dragons love gold!

Kurai-Hi · 0 points · Posted at 13:59:15 on January 30, 2012 · (Permalink)*

GAHH dragon steriotypes here sure dragons love gold and gems but the majority earn it honourably usually by tributing such items the dragons would thendefend the realm for man (for a time) there are the disgraceful ones that do steal but it is rare.

the dragons steal cows lore is created because of the fact milk is like an addiction to them help calm them down just like how warm milk helps some people sleep. they rarely kill them because of this fact. almost as valued to dragons as gems. they will take a wild cow over a domestic one but if not wild are in the area they leave gems or gold in their place (sometimes however people don't find the valuables and hunt the dragon for it).

dragons can come in all colors mainly common to rare green, white, black, red, and white most of the time based on the enviroment example white is more common in arctic climates where black in caves and red in volcanic areas.

the dragons of skyrim are in fact NOT dragons but the distant more agressive and more territorial cousin (Wyvern) if you were to run into a wyvern and a dragon you should be more aware of the wyvern as dragons will usually attack because a nest is near and they fear for the eggs wyverns attack on sight.

in certain areas of the world the sight of a dragon meant great luck and should someone that is truly pure of heart when they pass may be reincarnated into one of the holy spectrums of the dragon family.

2 fabled dragons one being Tiamat the other bahamut are polar oppisites to each other.

Taimat was a great beast of terror when she was killed her body was torn in two one half made the sky the other the land

Bahamut (usually depected as ether a silver/platnium or black dragon (both with golden horns)) was a holy dragon known to have watched over man.

dragons would often pass their knowledge onto man for service to the dragon although most of the time the dragon can't even get to speak with the person before fear sets in and the guy bolts.

it is very common to see males watching the nest while the females hunts this is because dragons suffer from some gender differances females are faster but weaker making them perfect for hunting prey while the male watches the eggs.

dragons are some of the few being that are willing to raise their young till they are ready to set out on their own similar to birds and humans. some lone dragons will occationally adopt a human orphan and raise them as their own.

dragons are incredibly smart often hiding how smart they really are.

dragons do breathe fire due to the hydrogen lungs they have this also allows flight the hydrogen is produced chemically in the body from foods the second ingredient in the fire making process is usually flint in the teeth thus the hide in caves lore for the flint is not naturally produced by their body.

dragons have been know to be able to make nests from as little as 3 miles away from a human civilization to watch and learn from them.

dragons are very against allowing to be mounted by man the only time this happens is if the dragon form a close bond see the adopt an orphan fact above.

dragons never stop growing they will even regrow lost tails and teeth tho damaged wings take much longer and forelegs/arms and hindlegs can't regrow.

if a dragon dies it is usually caused by sickness or man the dragon parts are greatly sought after eg. scales for strong armor and hearts as a pancea to most human diseases.

dragons are coldblooded and require heat to maintain their body tempurature but are just as adaptable as humans and use their firebreath to create fires with fallen trees they drag into their nests.

I don't know it i missed anything tho but my basic rundown of my knowledge of dragons for reddit and notch to ponder.

PS i realise most may TLDR this and thats fine just say my 5 cents (or half a dollar is you wanna be that way)

Can we have different kinds of dragons native to different biomes? Long, slender Chinese dragons in deserts, maybe, and Wyverns on mountains? Maybe even some Linnorms? (Lindworms? Given it tears the terrain to shreds, I'd think so...

You recover the materials needed to make an Eye of Ender or a few from the Nether, set out to a stronghold and find the Ender Gate, defeat the Enderdragon, credits roll as your creations scroll by in the background with a slight Gaussian blur effect, fade to black, and a splash screen appears...

Saratje · 1 points · Posted at 16:51:06 on October 14, 2011 · (Permalink)

One at a time or one-only-once? I imagine SMP will have a lot of unamiable interaction if the first slain Enderdragon is also the last.

Having new islands spawn in 'The End realm' when entering a different End-portal may remedy a limitation on the dragons you can fight. Similar to the nether a minimal distance between portals could dictate where in The End the player ends up.

Random brain-fart: Main world dragons should seek out NPC villages.. because well, dragon! (And crunchy villagers go well with ketch-up). A great way to hunt the rare dragon would be to find a NPC village which is not yet razed and wait. The player would defend the village against nasties at night until a circling dragon spots said village and pays a visit.

There's Giants, which had been in the game since infdev (or earlier), but it seems like Notch didn't bother fixing the spawn bug, but instead disabled them from spawning. They could easily be one of the boss mobs (they have 100 HP, and I'm sure I saw one trampling a creeper).

theheyway · 1 points · Posted at 18:42:18 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Totally understandable; I felt less "cheated" when I saw that you were planning to add other dragons with proper collision/flying/takeoff/etc., and I definitely understand the difficulty in coding something around completely arbitrary environments. Thanks for the response!

Malsententia · 3 points · Posted at 16:25:52 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

that was actually my first thought. pity you're getting downvoted for it. Minecraft has never seemed that good with collisions for large mobs, judging from ghasts.

MyrddinE · 1 points · Posted at 18:40:03 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

I should point out that 'navigating arbitrary terrain' is a very difficult AI problem that is not yet solved. By anyone. In any game.

There are many large monsters, but you know what no other game with big monsters has? Arbitrary terrain. Terrain where the player can build walls and control the entire structure of the world.

In most games designers spend hours, days, and weeks on the design of a level so that their boss monster can move fluidly through it and the player can't confuse the AI somehow... and they still get it wrong often. So don't pretend that Notch is somehow slacking compared to other game programmers... this issue is simply not easy to accomplish at all.

Malsententia · 1 points · Posted at 21:53:14 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Oh, I know that's a problem. I'm not talking about AI though, just collisions. As in mobs being able to glitch partway through walls, and not acting entirely solid. It's a problem entirely unrelated to AI. Well, at least, mostly. If they had better collision models, they might be a bit more prone to getting stuck, a problem which better AI might help with to a degree.

aminom · 23 points · Posted at 16:38:41 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Yes! Yes! This is exactly the sort of gameplay mechanic I've been hoping for. It's all coming together; there's a very solid design process behind this, not just random stuff added.

How do you navigate a ream made of floating islands with large gaps in between? Ender pearls, of course! This also makes sense for how Endermen move in their native realm. Ender dragons with their destructive capacities place an urgency on the need to move, as one could very well destroy the entire island you are on, especially if they have aggro.

In the Ender, nowhere is safe ever.

What is left is some sort of objective-oriented activity. Item collection perhaps, or fighting the Enderdragons themselves.

I think you do not understand the concept of science. Let me explain. If there were magical powers in this world, we could still have scientists, that state hypotheses and test them, and based on the results make theories about the world. Actually, we have a few scientists in Minecraft. Ethos, for example, or that guy who opens all his videos with "hey kids, something-rider here".

Yeah, there would still be science in a world with magic. A universe couldn't exist as far as we know unless its natural laws were internally consistent, and therefore subject to observation and understanding.

omnilynx · 1 points · Posted at 20:44:38 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

What if natural laws were consistent except with relation to sentient beings, for some reason? That is, ordinarily things worked exactly like normal, but something about thinking beings made it possible for them to affect the world around them in complicated ways? In other words, the rules exist, but study of them bears more resemblance to psychology than physics. That would make it very difficult to come up with a "scientific theory of magic" beyond a few generalized principles.

randomsnark · 1 points · Posted at 23:26:41 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

The only way I can think of that science wouldn't work would be if the rules of nature were radically indeterminate. In which case, you're fucked anyway.

I love the idea of erosion in Minecraft. In fact, they should add "plates" to the chunks and have them shift over each other to cause earthquakes in the game.

theCroc · 6 points · Posted at 19:09:44 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I like this theory! In ancient time dragons ruled the lands. In those days no civilization larger than a village was able to stand for long. The remnants of the old civilizations built strongholds underground to hide from the dragons while their magicians worked on a way to banish the dragons to a lower plane where they would never pose a threat again.

A number of portals were created and the requisite spells were performed. They succeeded but the price was immense. A shockwave of ender radiation killed everyone in the strongholds and on the surface, but not completely. Instead it changed them. Most became zombies or skeletons etc. Others became horribly disfigured but survived and gathered in the few remaining villages.

Only the magician performing the spell survived unharmed due to being sucked into a space time vortex at the center of the spell and was dropped decades later on a lonely patch of land with no memory of the past.

In the decades between the banishment and the return of the Great Magician the barrier between worlds started eroding and the Endermen, and smaller dragons started coming through into the normal world. It is now up to the Great Magician to discover his purpose and go into the End and slay the great dragon once and for all.

Wasn't there a front-page post asking Notch to not NERF enderdragons, now everyone is complaining about them being too powerful. I think this is awesome and look forward to the mods that will put these in the real world (use an endereye to summon one or something). We know nothing about the Ender, perhaps it will simply grow back to repair the destruction. Or the Ender is completely flat and the dragon doesn't fly below ground level (from the one screenshot i've seen of it so far)

Autsin · 21 points · Posted at 15:58:13 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Hopefully certain blocks will be immune to their mayhem and destruction. Ghasts are pretty awful, but being able to build out of cobblestone is nice. I'm not as afraid in the nether when I'm standing on a cobblestone platform. If nether/stone/clay bricks are immune to dragons, it would make the End a whole lot better. Then you could run into your shelter for a quick rest and break from battling the beast.

I'm worried, though, that "The End" will become "The Swiss Cheese" after spending an hour there due to dragons. :-/ Imagine how quickly the ground would be screwed up with multiple dragons flying around like this over the course of a few hours.

Tuqui0 · 14 points · Posted at 16:29:59 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I suppose the spawn rate of enderdragons will be really low and will surely not be more than 1 at a time, surely they wont ram against the terrain unless they see you.

Jeran · 7 points · Posted at 17:24:01 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

It's what I was thinking while I watched the video. To be fair, though, they shouldn't have to worry about stuff like that while balancing. It'd be like nerfing diamonds because you can get them for free with commands.

MereInterest · 8 points · Posted at 19:15:13 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

ttsci · 1 points · Posted at 19:05:05 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

At first I laughed, and then I thought about it and this is actually a pretty good explanation. Enderdragons are made of some kind of strange, otherworldly material that simply obliterates "normal" matter! Perhaps you need to enchant your weapons or craft Nether-items to harm it.

Guest101010 · 19 points · Posted at 15:37:35 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

That dragon makes all other mobs look lifeless. It really gives the game a fresh appeal.

Killing blocks in it's path in any world.... doesn't make much sense. A mob doing this would eventually render any world unsuitable to travel to, much less build in. And you can be sure that someone will want to build structures within them. The Creeper itself is more than destructive enough and is a pain to repair their damage. Just sayin....

This is the Minecraft dragon of my dreams.

I disagree. I want dragons in the main world. I want them to be extremely rare and live in extreme locations. But I want to possibly track them (maybe they fly overhead like airliners for the most part) and I want to piss them off, probably by stealing their treasure, and I want them to exact revenge by razing your shit.

I've never submitted a whiny IDEA! post, but this is just too important. It sounds like Notch will be adding a version to the main world, I will sit squirming in my chair until then.

chthonical · 7 points · Posted at 15:27:30 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)*

I'm going to "that guy" everything up, but this seems like something that may make the Ender itself undesirable in terms of exploration. I generally stay away from the Nether because ghasts blow up the area around my portals before I have a chance to reinforce them. Having something that can pass through all blocks, destroying them in the process, just seems worse than that.

Maybe do things where it can "phase" through most normal environment blocks, doing massive damage if it catches a player in it? Generally just noclip hacks with a visual effect? Maybe even give it some rudimentary pathfinding and course correction when it starts doing this so it doesn't just fly through the world and tries to arc away?

Dragon looks pretty neat, otherwise.

Guest101010 · 48 points · Posted at 15:38:05 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

The whole point of the Ender seems to be that it's a 'boss realm'. You don't go there to build. You go there to fight.

Shoden · 16 points · Posted at 15:46:22 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Ya, I think that way they can have a world with the real dangers like this that can't affect your home fort. People would be mad if a mob could really plow through their whole mage townfort in one go.

I will. Possibly just huge wooden dragon effigies to burn.

frozenfire · 3 points · Posted at 16:50:25 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

It's probably like Ghasts in that stronger materials won't be affected. Instead of building out of stone and dirt, you'll have to build out of iron blocks or obsidian. Not sure how the collision will work in that case. Maybe they'll get the dragon to land on the walls like spiders cling.

atomfullerene · 4 points · Posted at 17:48:03 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I bet it will destroy all the things, since the whole purpose is to avoid having to deal with pathing issues. IF blocks are unbreakable, it will have to avoid them, and will still have pathing issues

Islandre · 1 points · Posted at 17:17:04 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

This is what I love about building in the nether, especially with flammable materials, it makes it so much more satisfying when you manage.

How about this. The Ender Dragon is immune to damage in the end, with weapons passing right through it. It must be "summoned" to the real world in order to be fought. A huge series of quests to gather the tools and items needed to bring it back to your home realm, and then you still have to fight it. Huge damage caused by the fight, with a enormous payout when you (maybe) win. A unique set of "god" armor that lessens damage but does not take damage itself, or maybe a custom cape enabled in multi? Something really good. If you fail, the dragon goes back to the end while you respawn, and you start all over again.

kmeisthax · 2 points · Posted at 17:29:38 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

He obviously did, considering that in order for the dragon to actually destroy blocks you need to compute collisions with the ground anyway...

I really wish they would. Maybe a very rare neutral dragon that you can't interact with. I think it would be amazing to come across one and just stand there watching it fly around. Surely they can be made to avoid blocks? If they can attack you in the main world.. I'd say only let them fly through and destroy blocks if they are chasing you. I'd think a chase wouldn't last long so they would destroy too much. I almost never go to the nether, I doubt I'll be going to the ender? I want to see these guys though! Peaceful Dragons Please!!!

Helel · 1 points · Posted at 17:23:33 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I hope there's some sort of rare block that would keep them away, so if one reeeeeaaally wants to they can build a small fort or something in the enderplace

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 17:33:47 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I'd really love Enderdragons in the real world. You could set up something to keep them away from your villages/houses, but until you did, your roof would be clipped off or whatnot. I think it would have to be tweaked so you wouldn't run into dragons who wandered down to bedrock level..

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 18:24:53 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I'm amazed at how far Minecraft has come since Alpha, dragons are finally a reality, very excited for this. It would be really cool to have an optional setting when generating a new world to allow dragons to spawn in the main world, it would add a new level of unpredictable difficulty.

unia · 1 points · Posted at 18:26:49 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I really like all the destruction it causes, but I wish it didn't delete water blocks. It just looks strange to have channels of slightly lower water level. A possible fix could be if the Enderdragons, instead of destroying water blocks, took damage from them, like the Endermen. This would eliminate the silly water sculptures and give the player a weapon against the dragons, albeit an unwieldy and mostly ineffective one. Obviously that would only work if the pathfinding were changed so the dragon would avoid water, since one would think they would be smart enough not to damage themselves. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Pre-posting edit: It just occurred to me that I don't even know if The End will have water in it, considering it seems to be harmful to the inhabitants. If not, I suppose the issue is moot anyway.

Tetsugene · 1 points · Posted at 18:30:39 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

You should make dragons spawn in the world. When a dragon spawns let it create a very large territory around itself in which no dragons can spawn or enter, and let the spawned dragon stay close to its spawn point. If it prefers mountainous terrain to spawn in, you get self-generating dynamic EPIC dragon lairs to explore, potentially with a dragon at the bottom.

White eyes, black and gray bodies,Odd staticy effect similar to that of an old movie done in the same way as the armor effect. They vanish when you get withing 10 blocks of them, making the effect ender-eyes do when they vanish and dont drop themselves. Either that or an effect like dust blowing away in the wind. After all,You DID say that enderman were meant to be creepy as hell. Therefore,Make The End CREEPIER! :D

Tal-N · 1 points · Posted at 16:30:46 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

People complain about endermen moving 1 block at a time. So they were gimped. Expect the same to happen to dragons. Minecraft is never going to do anything unexpected or challenge the player if MoJang keeps catering to the whiners who want an easy and predictable game.

freedomgeek · 7 points · Posted at 16:43:41 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

The endermen changed people's structures that were created under the belief that it was a safe environment to build in and didn't leave anywhere safe to build. This adds a new area and is as such different.

lingnoi · 2 points · Posted at 16:57:59 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Tal-N · 1 points · Posted at 23:34:45 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

I don't call it a challenge when there is nothing to risk. Since death in Minecraft is incidental I disagree with your claim that they want the 'challenge' from fighting monsters. The challenge IS in the building and collecting, but as Notch makes it easier and easier to build and collect he is killing the fun of the game.

freedomgeek · 1 points · Posted at 00:32:38 on October 13, 2011 · (Permalink)

Endermen don't make it harder to build or collect. They aren't hard, They don't impede you when you're building. They are just a damn annoyance. Boring goddamn maintenance.

And "easier and easier"? He just reset it back to how it was.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 20:23:14 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

It was Notch's own call to nerf endermen, the Endermen were an annoyance at best.

Tal-N · 1 points · Posted at 23:35:58 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Had Notch decided to nerf the endermen without the community complaining about them I'd agree. But that didn't happen. People complained, Notch caved in to the complaints.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 23:50:29 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

that doesnt make sense. Am I the only person who is dissappointed? I was really hoping these would be some kind of rare occurance that would be difficult to kill, highly aggressive, and HIGHLY rewarding. Think Smaug coming down from the Lonely mountain to destroy lake town... THATS what a dragon should be. Elusive, dangerous, highly aggressive, but highly rewarding.

As it stands, they are just pretty, which wears off rather quickly.

:(

atomfullerene · 2 points · Posted at 17:50:08 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

C250585 · 1 points · Posted at 18:02:41 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

not too passive... too stupid. maybe destroy terrain in like ghasts do (only creeper sized holes), but huge swaths of terrain... that just doesnt make any sense whatsoever.

atomfullerene · 1 points · Posted at 18:14:06 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

The point of destroying terrain like that is so that the player can't box them in, and so that they don't have to worry about dealing with pathing for a big, quickly moving thing. Based on the screenshots of the Ender, it looks like in practice they won't have much to run into over the pretty level ground.

C250585 · 1 points · Posted at 18:21:32 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Check the title of the thread "why ender dragons won't spawn in main world" I think your town is safe. Also notch plans to add less destructive dragons to the main world someday, when he has time to figure out the rather difficult issue of keeping them from stupidly flying into things and getting stuck.

C250585 · 0 points · Posted at 18:57:19 on October 12, 2011 · (Permalink)

Yea fair enough... just kinda negates the whole idea of dragons.

Either way, notch has seriously done an incredible job on the dragon models, behaviour and animation... looking froward to seeing them, just hope they turn out to be more intricate to the game than just eye candy.
