Ever since Beta 1.8, the world generation has been fairly flat and homogeneous. Release 1.7 alleviated some of the issues with the terrain, but it's still honestly kind of boring. Then suddenly, 1.8 came along and gave us world customization options. Many customized world presets have tried to fix the boring terrain, but I think you'll come to the conclusion that this one stands out:
{"coordinateScale":684.412,"heightScale":888.176,"lowerLimitScale":423.45068,"upperLimitScale":388.2465,"depthNoiseScaleX":409.24646,"depthNoiseScaleZ":409.24646,"depthNoiseScaleExponent":0.8546479,"mainNoiseScaleX":80.0,"mainNoiseScaleY":160.0,"mainNoiseScaleZ":80.0,"baseSize":8.5,"stretchY":12.0,"biomeDepthWeight":0.5,"biomeDepthOffset":0.0,"biomeScaleWeight":2.0704226,"biomeScaleOffset":0.0,"seaLevel":65,"useCaves":true,"useDungeons":true,"dungeonChance":17,"useStrongholds":true,"useVillages":true,"useMineShafts":true,"useTemples":true,"useMonuments":true,"useMansions":true,"useRavines":true,"useWaterLakes":true,"waterLakeChance":4,"useLavaLakes":true,"lavaLakeChance":80,"useLavaOceans":false,"fixedBiome":-1,"biomeSize":4,"riverSize":5,"dirtSize":33,"dirtCount":10,"dirtMinHeight":0,"dirtMaxHeight":256,"gravelSize":33,"gravelCount":8,"gravelMinHeight":0,"gravelMaxHeight":256,"graniteSize":33,"graniteCount":10,"graniteMinHeight":0,"graniteMaxHeight":80,"dioriteSize":33,"dioriteCount":10,"dioriteMinHeight":0,"dioriteMaxHeight":80,"andesiteSize":33,"andesiteCount":10,"andesiteMinHeight":0,"andesiteMaxHeight":80,"coalSize":17,"coalCount":20,"coalMinHeight":0,"coalMaxHeight":128,"ironSize":9,"ironCount":20,"ironMinHeight":0,"ironMaxHeight":64,"goldSize":9,"goldCount":2,"goldMinHeight":0,"goldMaxHeight":32,"redstoneSize":8,"redstoneCount":8,"redstoneMinHeight":0,"redstoneMaxHeight":16,"diamondSize":8,"diamondCount":1,"diamondMinHeight":0,"diamondMaxHeight":16,"lapisSize":7,"lapisCount":1,"lapisCenterHeight":16,"lapisSpread":16}
The preset above is the result of several hours worth of fine-tuning, so I hope you thoroughly enjoy it.
This preset features:
Large lakes (7.8/10 too much water)
Extreme Hills that actually live up to their name
More height variation within biomes
More dungeons
A sense of nostalgic atmosphere (Like Beta+ in a way)

Oh my god, I just created a world with this preset and it looks beautiful. This brings me way back, thank you so much for this.
EDIT: Pretty late with this, but I recommend lowering the sea level. A lot of generated structures will generate on top of water otherwise (villages, mansions) and looks pretty ugly.

That looks really good. I'll have to try that out. I've felt for a while now that the standard terrain generation was just a bit too flat and unimaginative.
I might well use this for the preset next time we update our server with a new world.

Thanks, but that one was going for a realistic terrain generation, not a nostalgic/interesting terrain generation. I like the looks of u/Wawawawaluigi's much better. If nothing else, this one has floating islands and crazy mountains and overhangs, whereas u/thesilvercorsair's is intentionally calibrated to NOT generate those things.
While avoiding floating islands and overhangs is great for realism, and that certainly has a place, but for general game play I find it boring. Thanks, though.

I'm pretty sure that you don't need to write all the parameters if their value is the default value. That would make the preset shorter:
{"coordinateScale":684.412,"heightScale":888.176,"lowerLimitScale":423.45068,"upperLimitScale":388.2465,"depthNoiseScaleX":409.24646,"depthNoiseScaleZ":409.24646,"depthNoiseScaleExponent":0.8546479,"mainNoiseScaleX":80.0,"mainNoiseScaleY":160.0,"mainNoiseScaleZ":80.0,"baseSize":8.5,"stretchY":12.0,"biomeDepthWeight":0.5,"biomeDepthOffset":0.0,"biomeScaleWeight":2.0704226,"biomeScaleOffset":0.0,"seaLevel":65,

As for your dungeon conundrum, the numbers are opposite of what you think: lower is higher.
[deleted] · 10 points · Posted at 15:01:49 on February 19, 2017 · (Permalink)
This is false. "Dungeon Count" refers to how many times the game attempts to spawn a dungeon per each chunk, so a higher number means more dungeons. This can be seen taken to its extremes in this preset.
Also, I've continued searching and I can confirm that dungeons do indeed spawn on my preset.

Hum. I just remembered how lava worked, the numbers were not intuitive.

Can this work with FTB modpacks or is it just a vanilla thing since FTB is a little behind?
ProfessionalMartian · 1 points · Posted at 18:51:36 on February 19, 2017 · (Permalink)
Most modpacks are for 1.7.10, which I think doesn't have presets. Newer ones might work with it but I would imagine it might not play well with modded biomes/generation as it's not necessarily a feature that mod makers would account for.
Antispiralking · 1 points · Posted at 20:58:03 on February 19, 2017 · (Permalink)
It will work in any 1.8.9 or 1.10.2 or 1.11 pack. Just use this upon world gen (customize type).

aww man, that island picture made me remember one of my worlds. i had found a really long crescent-shaped island populated with nothing but chickens, and i've never seen anything like it in normal gen since.

Is it possible for this preset to work using Biomes o' Plenty? The customization options for a Biomes o' Plenty world only allows for me to change the main noise scales, coordinate scales, upper and lower limit scales and height scale. What would I be missing without being able to change the other settings like depth scales and stretch Y?
