You need rotten flesh get past the first tier of trades with clerics. But mostly I do it for the XP. Heck, even when I'm doing it to unlock the higher level trades, I'm still really doing it for XP.
If you toss a splash potion, and then select a looting sword before the splash potion hits, you'll get the Looting effects (but it won't take any durability)

But if you put Mending on your Looting sword, you don't even need to worry about it! (I'm assuming the sweep-damage only counts once for durability.)
XP. Rotten flesh for trading up to Emeralds and more XP. Small quantities of iron ingots. Occasional free iron shovels, or even iron swords. Free armour of varying quality, that can be repaired without retaining enchantments, or with enchantments (using an anvil) or just for decoration in item frames or on armour stands. Source of villagers by conversion. Carrots/potatoes.

That's pretty much it. If it's the only type of spawner that you can find near your base it's better then nothing but a skeleton spawner is much more beneficial.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Skeletons get you bones (and bone meal), bows and arrows, spiders get you string (bows, wool) and eyes for brewing, etc. Rotten flesh is missing a good use in vanilla.

True, but they seem to serve a more mythical purpose. They are commonly used in potions. But I don't know any irl or mythical uses for rotten flesh. I guess I could see it in necromancy or something, but that's not a part of vanilla Minecraft.

Well, first you lure the zombie away from your house, then build a cage around it once you've gone a significant distance. Then you go back to your house and look at the zombie. That's how you make a zombie far.

You get two zombies, trap them in a pen. You then feed them villagers, until hearts pop above their heads, and then they make baby zombies.
basically find yourself a zombie spawner hollow out 2 spaces above and 4 in every direction around the spawner. put 2 blocks above the zombie spawner just so they dont spawn on top of the room. Then you need to drop the zombies down 23 squares to 1 hit them. If you are somewhere you cant do 23 use a shaft with signs + water to raise them up so you can drop them 23 slots. Then you stand near the spawner to force the zombies to spawn as long as you like then kill and collect your loot.
Infinity no longer affects special arrows as of the latest snapshot. Normal arrows will continue to be infinite, but it will use up your special ones normally.
even better, a diamond sword with mending and unbreaking 3.

Well, I see the hivemind is just as fucking bad on some MTG subs. Mending is crazy fucking broken with grinders. There's still more than one way to get it, and it's not all that hard to do either, so it needs to be nerfed even more.

Too true, but at the very least they could find something more to put on the gpu to help improve performance. I mean, even if it is too easy to do, it would significantly help those with lower end setups run the game more fluidly.
that could stand to be nerfed. maybe takes extra damage depending on how many mobs it hits. like if a sword does 10 damage it takes 1 extra durability per 10 mobs in a hit.

It would make more sense for the damage number to be used until maxed out.
For example, three mobs, right to left: one mob has half a heart, a second one has 2.5 hearts, and the last one has 6. Your weapon does 7 damage, so it should defeat the first and second mobs, then deal the remaining one 4 damage.
This would make more sense, since if I lined up a bunch of weak things and swung a sword, my force wouldn't reset after destroying each object, the potential force is still the same.
This is like slicing through a whole phone-book while only needing the force to slice 2 sheets of paper

This would require more calculations for clients and servers. Besides this is not a physics simulator, this is a game were a skeleton with no connective tissue or muscles can shoot a bow.

I think it would be more balanced if it took one point for each one. At least some modded swords that does AoE damage like the sword of the zephir takes damage for multiple targets. Same for hunger points

Nope, just tested and it was able to kill a whole group of them while I wasn't crouched. You do have to be standing completely still for the sweep attack to even go off, but I'm not sure if that's new.
According to the wiki you just have to not be running. Standing still, sneaking, walking normally all do the sweep attack but running doesn't.

Oh, maybe I'm just so used to instantly starting to sprint when I move that that's what I did, which is why it didn't work. I have sprint macro'd to a side button on my mouse so it's easy to activate and I end up sprinting all the time. I go through so much food.

You do not. In 1.9 there is now an "attack indicator" bar that charges up after each swing, and the amount of damage you do is based on how full the bar is (meaning you do way less damage if you spam click instead of waiting for the bar to refill). Swords now have an extra ability called the "sweep attack" that triggers when you attack a mob while your attack bar is full, which not only damages the mob you hit but all the mobs in a small AOE around it. This sweep attack only seems to work if you're standing still (in my testing).
You can play test the snapshots (prerelease) as they come out. When you're in the launcer click 'edit profile' on the bottom left. There you can choose which version of the game (or which specific snapshot) you want to play

Step one, place a piston with a slimeblock onto the ground.
Step two, fire a bunch of punch two arrows at the slime block with an infinty punch two bow.
step three, throw on some splash potions of healing
step (four) onto the slime block
step five, turn on the piston.
Easy modular elytra launchpad.

Make a superflat world 50 blocks high.
Go to (0,0) and set the world spawn.

It would make more sense for the damage number to be used until maxed out.
For example, three mobs, right to left: one mob has half a heart, a second one has 2.5 hearts, and the last one has 6. Your weapon does 7 damage, so it should defeat the first and second mobs, then deal the remaining one 4 damage.
This would make more sense, since if I lined up a bunch of weak things and swung a sword, my force wouldn't reset after destroying each object, the potential force is still the same.
This is like slicing through a whole phone-book while only needing the force to slice 2 sheets of paper

Nope, just tested and it was able to kill a whole group of them while I wasn't crouched. You do have to be standing completely still for the sweep attack to even go off, but I'm not sure if that's new.

Oh, maybe I'm just so used to instantly starting to sprint when I move that that's what I did, which is why it didn't work. I have sprint macro'd to a side button on my mouse so it's easy to activate and I end up sprinting all the time. I go through so much food.

You do not. In 1.9 there is now an "attack indicator" bar that charges up after each swing, and the amount of damage you do is based on how full the bar is (meaning you do way less damage if you spam click instead of waiting for the bar to refill). Swords now have an extra ability called the "sweep attack" that triggers when you attack a mob while your attack bar is full, which not only damages the mob you hit but all the mobs in a small AOE around it. This sweep attack only seems to work if you're standing still (in my testing).

noob question; how are people already playing the new version? I don't see the update on my launcher

Go to launcher -> edit profile -> Enable experimental development versions, then you can select the snapshot you want to try.

You can play test the snapshots (prerelease) as they come out. When you're in the launcer click 'edit profile' on the bottom left. There you can choose which version of the game (or which specific snapshot) you want to play

I'm surprised they are making this change, considering that they don't like mob farms. Maybe they didn't consider the benefits this change would have for mob farms. Or maybe it was just Notch who hated mob farms.

No reason to make combat mechanics suffer just to spite mob farms. There's other ways to wreck mob farms.
