EDIT: Sorry, the bedrock link was broken. It's fixed now -- sorry for any inconvenience.
The sponges in classic minecraft were SO much more useful, so I decided to make them work in 1.8. They function just like the original, clearing out a cube of air around them. You can break them and the water will flow back in--no artifacts left.
A classic sponge will only be placed if a player throws one dry sponge on the ground. Sponge items can fall and not create these--you need to throw it.
Additionally, you can still place 1.8 sponges just like normal.
Want this in your world? Here's the easy-installing one-click versions:
A couple questions because I've never used pastebin before...
1) How do I install this into my world?
2) What's the difference between the above-ground and bedrock versions?

Above ground version places the system in front of the installation command. The bedrock version places it at the bottom of the map, so you can put it into a survival world without the commands being visible.
1) Copy all of the text in the pastebin and insert it into a command block (obtained via: /give command_block), then trigger the command block with a redstone signal (a button or lever will do).
2) I'm not sure, but presumably the bedrock version will create the command blocks in a different way or location.
It's not a glitch, Bukkit just fixed the broken sponges in versions before 1.8. Also half-fixed the zombie sieges, although it made them completely unbeatable.
