If you want silent fireworks set their flight time to 1 and they will not make the launch sound.

The explosion is the problem, fireworks are fantastic for more complex particle effects.

On the gamepedia, in the particle page, they seem to not be here, but, anyway, the way you can display the particles (explosion, trials...) is very useful for some fantastic effects.

You can, sort of, but you can't assign them colors or shapes. They always appear white and spread out uniformly across the target area.

You can just lower the fuse time if you want stealthy creepers. I don't think this silences non-ambient noise but I haven't used it yet.

I think it's a great choice of example mob. Imagine mining in the nether and not hearing a thing until the fireball exploded. No warning spitting sound.
