Sir, may I see your authority to enter?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Youse_a_choosername ยท 14426 points ยท Posted at 15:32:23 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Many years ago I had succumbed to a patriotic fever and enlisted in the Air National Guard. As such I went to basic training. Yes, it's the same basic training the "Real Air Force" goes to. Anyway...

One of the first bits of training they try to hammer into your skull is the importance of the Dorm Guard (DG). DG is responsible for controlling who has access to the dormitories, reporting headcount to nightwatch, and making sure nobody is slitting their wrists in the shitter or starting fires. It is a very easy job but trainees regularly fuck it up because they can't think straight in a military training environment. If someone knocks on the door the DG has to verify their ID against a list on the back of the door. No ID? No entry. If ID is presented but there is no matching name on the list? No entry. There are only two exceptions. If the person requesting entry has a key and uses the key in the lock (because holding it up to the window to show you are a key holder isn't good enough. Yes, one trainee learned this the hard way.) Or the person requesting entry can use a known code word, but this will only happen in an actual emergency and isn't part of the training experience. To quote my MTL (Military Training Leader) "If Osama bin Laden shows up to the door armed with an RPG and wrapped head to toe in dynamite and he gives you the code word, let the fucker in and stay out of his way."

Everyone will do DG duty and you should expect to be tested. They will yell and threaten, try to trick you, intimate you and beat on the door mercilessly, but the protocol is gospel. Break from the rules and you'll find yourself writing letters to the families of your fellow trainees, explaining that they were killed because you couldn't remember how to guard a fucking door. (Looking at you, Trainee "Oh I see you have a key, let me open the door for you"). Basic is a headgame. They aren't allowed to physically touch you so you are never in any actual danger. All danger is simulated by big bald Sargents yelling. I had the advantage of being almost 10 years older than the average trainee (I celebrated my 28th birthday during BMT.) I've been yelled at before. It doesn't bother me.

It's the middle of the night and I'm on duty. I do a head count. 51 people present, 50 people assigned. This means either I miscounted, or someone is here that isn't assigned to be here, not to mention whoever did the count before me has been fucking it up. I recount, 51/50, and call it in to the MTL on duty (not our regular MTL) via the loud ass squawk box intercom on the wall which everyone in the dorm can hear.

Me: Sir, trainee Youse reports as ordered. Blah blah blah other shit I had to report... Headcount, 50 assigned, 51 accounted for.

MTL: "WHAT WAS THAT HEADCOUNT AGAIN?"

ME: Sir, 50 assigned, 51 accounted for.

MTL: WRONG. COUNT THEM AGAIN.

Now I've already checked and double checked and I have already assumed that this was a paperwork error and not my error but they want me to follow orders and procedures so that is what I will do. I recount and report.

"Sir, 50 assigned, 51 accounted for. "

SO HELP ME TRAINEE IF I HAVE TO COME UP THERE BECAUSE YOU CAN'T COUNT I WILL CHOKE YOU TO DEATH WITH YOUR REFLECTIVE BELT AND BURY YOU IN THE PARADE GROUND WITH THE FLAGPOLE UP YOUR ASS. NOW GET EVERYBODY UP. SOUND OFF ONE BY ONE SO I CAN FUCKING HEAR IT.

By now almost everyone is awake anyway so everyone begins to sound off.

"One sir, Two sir, Three sir..... Fourty nine sir, Fifty sir... Cut to the last guy, shaking his head because he's scared of what he knows is coming next... Fifty one sir. "

GODAMNIT! ONEOFYOUUSELESSFUCKSISGOINGTODIETONIGHT! I'M FUCKING COMING UP THERE!

The dorm is a 2 minute walk from CQ. He was there in about 9 seconds banging on the door. But, being as mad as he was, he stormed over without his key, his ID, and had apparently forgotten the fact that there was a single word that would open the door instantly. He was focused on fixing whatever was jacked up with my headcount.

Banging on the door. OPEN UP!

"Sir, may I see your authority to enter? "

I JUST GOT OFF THE COM WITH YOU LET ME THE FUCK IN!

"Sir, without valid ID I am forced to refer you to CQ for authorization."

ARE YOU FUCKING SHITTING ME? I AM THE CQ! CUT YOUR SHIT AND OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!

"Sir, without valid ID I cannot allow you access to the dorm. Please contact CQ for authorization. "

By now the other trainees are nervous, and some are telling me to open the door while others are insisting I keep it shut, perhaps indefinitely because the Sgt. sounds like he may actually end someone's life tonight. I stick to the program and we go back and forth like this a few more times. I've honestly never had anyone this angry with me in my life, but all my replies are literally written on the back of the door so I keep reading them to him, which only makes him madder and madder each time. By now it's been 20 minutes since first count and he's used up every threat and insult at his disposal and is forced to stop and think. He remembers the code word.

CODE WORD

I opened the door immediately. He bolts passed me with only the slightest pause for some direct eye contact which sent the message that he would be back shortly to harvest my flesh for a new suit he was going to make, and he begins to count.

51

WHO OF YOU IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE?

Silence.

Then from the last bunk "Umm, sir?" It's a guy we don't recognize. All our counting thus far took place in the dark. Until the Sgt was in the room and he turned the lights on we had no idea. It turns out this kid had graduated the day before but needed to be warehoused for a few weeks while he waited for his next training assignment to begin. He was supposed to be there, but since he wasn't on our roster, he was not included in the headcount. Promises of extreme punishment were issued and we were told that this wasn't over and that the morning would be terrible for all of us, especially me.

At 0530 I was called on the carpet to explain why I refused to allow the Sgt to perform his duties. I stated plainly and simply that there were protocols and procedures in place for me to follow. I had been told never to deviate and that I would be tested. I had performed my duties to the best of my abilities. They could find no fault with this and I was never punished. My MTL (not the one from night watch) later quietly congratulated me for sticking to the protocol. Ultimately it reflected well on both of us.

Tl;Dr: Fix your attention span and learn to read a page or two of text. This post may or may not be worth it but someday one will be.

The number of people completely missing the point of the TLDR is amazing!

Basic training is all about rigid compliance with the rules, paying attention to every detail, and completing every task without taking shortcuts- because it may not make a difference this time, but someday your life or the lives of those under you may depend on the whether or not you took the lazy path.

My MTI always told us, "if you're not cheating, you're not trying."

We were encouraged to do everything as we were told, but if we found an easier way to do it then go for it. We had kids super glue their socks together once they were rolled perfectly. Another kid sewed his shirts up when they were rolled. When our MTI picked up his wall locker and threw it and all the clothes stayed perfectly folded and rolled, he smiled for a second before making us all PT for an hour and a half in the day room.

I don't. I read a lot. Books mostly, but I also proofread for a living. When I want to read for entertainment, I like to have some idea that it's going to be entertaining. Could you imagine picking up a magazine and instead of listing anything under the Contents it just read "Don't be a lazy a**hole, just read our whole magazine."

Nevertheless, that was entertaining.

Well every time you authorize someone to enter you have to identify the item they're presenting. So generally it's "One White Common Access Card." However in this case it was "One Yellow Banana" while we were laughing so hard in the dorm as the MTI kept banging the banana against the view hole, demanding the trainee use it to authorize his entry. Just imagine a tiny guy with a wide hat banging a banana against a door so hard that the poor 18 year old answering it looks like he wants to pee his pants from fear.

Newbosterone ยท 42 points ยท Posted at 00:29:39 on April 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I had a friend who was a missileer during the Cold War. They played this game for entry to the silos also, but if you lost, the shit really hit the fan. Best case, you wound up standing in front of a Colonel as he told you you just endangered the free world, and should probably request a career change to running a mess hall. In very loud and very profane terms.

During one shift, his commander (Full Bird) brought a General for an inspection. When requesting access, the Col accidentally gave the "I'm under duress" secret signal. My friend and his second about had heart attacks. Was it a mistake? Were they being tested? What happens if they piss off the General who does QC for the wing?

He finally decides he'd rather be reamed for following orders than disobeying them, and stalls the visitors while alerting security. In minutes, several truckloads of heavily armed SPs swarm the entry and have the General and Col laying on the floor at gunpoint.

Soon it's all sorted out, the General is impressed that procedures were followed to the letter, and the Colonel's playing it as "just testing them". The Colonel admitted to him later he was distracted and screwed up.

flyinfishface ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 01:09:59 on April 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I wonder if the ICBM stuff was the main reason for such a pain in the ass thing for dorm guard. Shit, I remember them stacking the order to get the morons off the probable to have people come at the door shifts.

Newbosterone ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 02:34:23 on April 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Every military job probably has the equivalent. The military takes people of differing abilities and backgrounds and puts them in positions where a screwup gets someone killed. Every maintainer has a horror story of a tech order step that got skipped and the disaster it (almost) caused.

flyinfishface ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 20:00:23 on April 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

CelestialFury ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 20:01:44 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I switched to Army and had to go through their bootcamp at Jackson. There wasn't any game like this...

I thought it's only the Marines that don't accept bootcamp training from the other branches, unless you mean the training after bootcamp?

MrDerpyCookie ยท 42 points ยท Posted at 21:31:25 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

As it was explained to me, it's almost a hierarchy of basic training. If you go through Marine Corp Boot Camp, any service will allow you in without having to go through Basic Training. If you go through Army BCT, you can go to any other service expect Marine Corp without having to repeat Basic. It goes Marine Corp -> Army -> Navy -> Air Force.

CelestialFury ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 22:47:48 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I found it:

In the Army, former members of other services (except the Marine Corps), are required to attend the four-week Warrior Transition Course at Fort Bliss, Texas. Former Soldiers and Marines who have a break in service of more than three years must also attend this course. For the purpose of this section, for soldiers and Marines who separate, break in service starts after Military Service Obligation (MSO) is completed or when a member (regardless of service) is no longer a member of a reserve component (including the IRR)

So Navy and Air Force would have to do a 4 week course go to into the Army, but Air Force and Navy can go into each others branches freely.

chicagoway ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 05:33:41 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

There is still a transition period for Air Force veterans entering the Navy.

Someone has to explain to them why they will no longer look like ice-cream salesmen or flight attendants in uniform, and instead will look like one of the Village People.

flyinfishface ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:50:35 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The WTC was killed off in 2011. They may have brought it back, but I transferred in 2012. The military changes things constantly.

No, I went to full blown basic training dude. The only thing I didn't have to do was stay in the barracks, I was in a drill sergeant apartment with another SGT. I mean, if you want, I can give you my recruiter's phone number if you want to verify my story. It's cool.

[deleted] ยท 44 points ยท Posted at 22:47:19 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Has nothing to do with hierarchy and everything to do with marines being so full of their own shit they won't take prior army without them going to boot camp.

Skaarson ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:43:44 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Not entirely true. We had two prior army guys in navy basic.

Edit: That was 16 years ago so things may have changed.

ratamaq ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:42:11 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I think osvets have to go just through the processing part to get their uniforms and stuff in the Navy. Plus they have to stay E3s until they finish school and get a rate due to there being no such thing as an E4+ Seaman.

Slixem ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:34:47 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

We had both former Army and former Marine guys going through basic in my training squadron. I'm not sure if they were out of active duty for a while before coming back but they were definitely there in trainee status.

MrDerpyCookie ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:36:38 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

From what other commenters have said it seems that if you're out for a while you have to back through.

flyinfishface ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:10:24 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

For whatever reason, Active Duty Army was fine with xfering dudes from the AF, but the National Guard (Army) wanted us zoomies to go though basic again, unless we came from a "combat" ASFC. Something National Guard Bureau.

No.. I don't mean training after boot camp. I was a SGT wearing E5 sergeant stripes with ~12 years in getting yelled at among privates. I WAS a TSGT in the Air Guard. crazy huh. It was the weirdest 10 weeks of my life. Like one of those dreams you have where you are back at whatever, and you have to do it again...

NotCleverNamesTaken ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:13:44 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

ratamaq ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 03:50:20 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

It must be effective though. Damn near every Navy/USMC gate I went through was a glance at ID and a wave every base I drove on. Near the end of my time took leave at an AF base in FL that has old O quarters as rentable condos for vacations.

Every-single-time I went through the gate that week an AF guy informed my my ID was about to expire.

That and the fucking red line on their flight lines. Fuck those red lines.

flyinfishface ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 12:39:12 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Good point. It's definitely drilled into people there. I mean, I get that the AF basic training is a huge joke, but you know what I did at the Army? Half of it was sitting around at the range waiting to shoot... All... freakin... day. It was mind blowing.

Slixem ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:38:11 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Hearing all the new kids straight from basic and tech school makes me shake my head. All these kids tell me they went in expecting and almost hoping for the Full Metal Jacket treatment and they go through getting coddled and called a turd as the worst thing. They don't throw the mail at you anymore, no cussing, and no PTing you when you screw up. They looked at me like I was crazy when I said we had all 53 guys doing push ups, flutter kicks, and squat thrusts in the day room. I'm pretty sure one or two kids got a broken nose from another guys boot hitting them in the face during those times.

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:52:15 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Speaking from experience as of last year, you do still get PT as punishment, I'm not sure who told you that but they're incorrect. I can't tell you how many times our MTI stomped over to us after hearing about some minor fuckup and screaming "ON YOUR FACES TRAINEES!" Squat thrusts, pushups and flutterkicks all day. The guidelines and limitations for it are even in the BMTSG book. I do think it's silly that they can't curse at all, but they sometimes will anyway if they think they can get away with it. It's definitely less punishing than in years past but it's not nearly as ridiculous as people make it out to be.

Slixem ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:03:32 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

That's good to hear. I think some of the new kids were going through when some instructors got in trouble for something or other. So that wasn't why they were PT'd as hard.

I went through with the whole sex scandals and the kid getting shoved into a dryer and we got a break for maybe 1 day.

My main drill sergeant was infantry, and always said bullshit like "God loves the infantry." I think he joined around when I did.... he never messed with me. He was wearing E7. which was pretty interesting to me. My AF TIs were E5/E6s, the E7 dude was the section supervisor.

The woman DS... she was in the band previously. I had put on E6 YEARS before she did, but I demoted to E5 to xfer. Her and I didn't get along too well. I wish I could look her up so I could send her some troll face "HEY LOOK HOW GREAT IM DOIN" type stuff.

We had an MTL in training who was female come up and I forgot to announce "Female entering the dorm" when I let her in (after properly checking id of course). Oh well.

harmsc12 ยท 41 points ยท Posted at 20:21:24 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I was a wreck and should have failed out in basic from my pathetic PT performance alone, and the instructors there tried their hardest to break me. Instead I BSOD'ed during tech school because of two shitstain peers who got under my skin far worse than any instructor ever could. My BSOD only got worse after a kid I knew from church committed suicide. I eventually got sent home after months of waiting and seeing the psychiatrist.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Youse_a_choosername ยท 55 points ยท Posted at 21:07:26 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I'm sorry you had that experience. Lots of people overestimate how well they'll perform in the military environment. We had a guy cut his wrists on the first night and another who tried to jump off something in the obstacle course to break his legs, looking for a medical write off. The services all joke about AF basic being soft, but everything is relative. It's radically different than anything a 19 year kid has ever encountered. I had my moments where I questioned my ability to continue. I was away from my wife and infant son. I missed them terribly. The physical stuff didn't bother me, but the endless, mindless repetitive tasks and bullshit procedures did. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered my options. It's not for everyone.

Good luck and I hope you are doing some tolerable (or enjoyable) now.

Best advice I can give you is pick the easiest job you'll think you'll like. I did well on the ASVAB and in an egotistical haze asked "What's the hardest job on base" which got me an Avionics maintainer position. I liked the challenge, didn't really enjoy the work. If you're a hard charger who wants to make a career out of it be prepared for dealing with office politic bullshit. If you want to coast and reap the pay and benefits you'll find friends easily and will have no problems. Good luck!

Its a derogatory term for members of the military who don't see actual combat as part of their job. Its usually used in somewhat joking way now days especially when it started showing up in movies and military shows.

The Air Force version of POG is Nonner. If you aren't maintenance, you're a nonner. The only people who are almost not nonners, are security forces, because they almost get fucked as hard as the maintainers.

Nonner is such an offensive word apparently that HHQ has made it known that if anyone uses it, there will be disciplinary actions taken. Although that never happens. When I went through Airman Leadership School, the instructors said, "Everyone here is just as important as everyone else. There is no such thing as the n-word."

Then when the Chaplain was doing his briefing, he was the maintenance squadrons Chaplain, he walked in and said, "Who all is maintenance in here? Hmmm... about half, okay. So we got half maintenance and half nonners. Not trying to offend, but that's what you are. It's what I am." It was pretty damn funny.

I got "fired" from DG because I messed up this "Female entering the dorm" statement when a female MTI came in. She had the DG roster keeper strike me from the list because I apparently insulted her or something. I don't even remember exactly what I said- perhaps it was "lady entering the dorm"....or was that was I was supposed to say?

Which was fine by me. I didn't have to do DG for about three weeks before our MTI noticed somehow that I wasn't on the list and had me added back on.

Merovean ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 00:07:48 on March 14, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I appreciate that you understand that ignorant isn't an insult. Books certainly help, they can at least give you an intellectual understanding of what the experience is like. However, the reality, even Air Force basic, is a completely different thing.

It's not a programming, a mind scrubbing, or anything like that. It's a shock to the system, then learning to think critically, to think and act under pressure. It's learning to give and follow clear instructions, to work with a team, to understand that you're screwed without your team, and how to adapt quickly to change.

So basic training is a life altering event for many, and even in the Air Force there's roughly a 40% fail rate (we started with 63 graduated 28 including some recycles) because many simply cannot dig deep enough, find the desire or courage, the "fuck it", or the inner strength to continue. This isn't a flaw necessarily so much as a needed screening out of those who will not be able to adapt, learn, or react appropriately to high stress, dynamic, and often dangerous situations.

So all my blah blah blah pretty much boils down to don't think you understand it, cause unless you've been there, and successfully made it through, you simply cannot understand, not really.

Lots of caffeine today sorry.

Guy I was with pulled main gate guard duty. Come morning, at 05H50 the RSM drives up to the gate. He stops and this guy marches over with rifle, and calmly asks for ID. This was the morning the RSM had left his Military ID at home, and after 5 minutes of yelling , and having a rifle levelled at him, he reversed, and drove back ( at a speed that might or might not have been considered as inappropriate for formula 1 vehicles)to his house to collect it.

He arrived back at 07H10, with an entire platoon of the rest of us waiting in front of his locked office looking at him at parade rest. Sweet FA he could do, though the guy never again pulled gate duty, instead he was assigned the coldest furtherest posts instead for his next duty a month later.

what probably Peed off the RSM was the stream of cars driving in through the other gate, with a guard letting them through without question, but that gate had no road to the RSM's preferred parking area without going all the way around the base, and through another 2 security points that only opened after 07H00 in any case.

EODBuellrider ยท 149 points ยท Posted at 19:09:55 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Haha I had two similar events in Army basic. Not quite as funny as yours though.

Once, while we were still in reception waiting to go to basic we had a guy fall into our formation by mistake. So obviously when we went to count off... We were +1.

We must have counted off a dozen times, the guy refusing to admit his mistake (we didn't really know each other at that time), the drill sergeant getting madder and madder... Many pushups were had before that goober admitted his fuckup.

The second time, while we were actually in basic, some guy went to sleep after his assigned fire guard shift (like your door guard) in the wrong bunk for whatever stupid reason. One or two fire guard shifts later, someone realized that his bunk was empty and reported a soldier missing.

Initially the drill sergeants were in a rage at the fireguard because they thought fire guard had let a soldier go AWOL, and then they were in a rage at the guy who wasn't in his assigned bunk. It was not a good night for that kid... But he was the platoon fuckup anyways, he had lots of bad times in basic.

Moral of the story... Drill sergeants HATE it when they think they've misplaced a soldier.

They hate when they lose a weapon more.

We got back late from ranges, only had 1 ds on duty for overnight CQ. My platoon was in bed and we could hear him chewing out and smoking another platoon for a couple hours. Lucky for them the clean-up detail found the weapon and brought it back, but not until that whole platoon got the ever living shit smoked out of them.

Reportedly that DS got blamed for the missing weapon and was physically removed from the company while shouting "I FUCKING HATE PRIVATES!" Whether that part is true or not, we didn't see him again.

I was on submarines during the 80s and each boat had an access control list while in port. If youre on the list you get on , if not you are barred , if you challenge it hard enough - terminal force is authorized. I was on Tridents the last half of my time in. My boat was new and our Captain was original nuclear navy. He had been XO of the Nautilus SSN-571 when it was in service. He had turned down Commodore to be in command of the submarine.

One of his buddies was Admiral Hyman Rickover - the father of naval nuclear power. This was about a year before he died. 85-ish(he was 85 too). He was invited to come down for a test ride on what was at the time the most powerful weapon of destruction on the face of the planet. 1296 Megatons of nuclear destructive capability.

The list of things to do or not do was like a rock stars list. Do not address the Admiral even if spoken to. White grapes peeled in the wardroom and all times. A one page list of protocol for the old man. Food, temperature, music. the whole thing.

So anyways he and his staff came down (even retired he had a staff) Along with people from squadron. And he just walks down the plank on board and starts to go down the hatch before topside watch can get there. The topside pulls his shotgun racks it and points it right at his head in the hatch. His staff goes crazy. The watch hits the alarm and orders him out of the hatch.

You would think the Father of Naval Nuclear Power would be on every single access list for every nuclear powered vessel in the US Navy.

But he wasnt.

The watch was dressed down for pointing a shotgun at what was considered to most powerful and feared person in the pentagon.

But the old man, sincerely apologized for violating a protocol he developed and was escorted down. It was kind sad as you watched this 85 year old man sitting there. Enjoying what would be his last ride on something he was responsible for. He died a few months later. And there stories passed since almost anyone in naval nuclear power had at some point been the target of his wrath. He wasnt a bad person but knew first hand the cost of failure having lost 2 submarines in the 60s. And perfect was the only standard in his life.

The KOG was famous for defending watchstanders who defied him (if in accordance with regulations). COs invariably freaked out, but the KOG had a soft spot for (nuke) blueshirts.

Ha ha, nice one.

My Dad told me a similar story from Vietnam. Forgive me I don't know all the military terms, but I've been told the story a million times. He was a lowly technician, not a combat role, and one of his jobs when was within cooee of the front was guard duty.

He said one time he was one duty and a patrol came in, so he called out the code word, and because they were battle hardened tough and rough warriors they ignored the kid on guard duty calling out the code. So my Dad called it out again, and they ignored him again. These people were obviously Aussie soldiers, but rules are rules and at this point he's ordered to start shooting at these men.

He didn't shoot at them, but he did storm up to the patrol, go straight to the boss and start shouting at him "What the bloody hell do you think you're doing?! I was about to SHOOT you! Why didn't you call the code word? You stupid bastard!"

And the officer he was yelling at started yelling back at him, and an argument was breaking out, when an even higher officer came up to find out what was going on. The other bloke started talking, but my Dad, probably only 21 at the time, cut him off and was all like "I'll tell you what's up! I nearly shot this idiot right here because he didn't say the code word. It's YOUR job to train these people, if YOU can't do your job someone's going to DIE!"

And the senior officer turned to the patrolling officer and said "He's right you know. You have to say the code words." And my Dad yelled "Too bloody right I'm right. Next time, I'm just going to SHOOT you." and he stormed off.

Anyway, he says it wasn't until about 5 minutes later, when he was walking away, that he realised he just totally yelled at two officers and threatened to shoot one of them. Nothing ever came of it, but he was shitting himself.

derb ยท 32 points ยท Posted at 05:47:05 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

So Australian. Both the returning patrol officer and the ranking officer both had a "she'll be right mate" attitude in two different ways. First one didn't think he'd need the code word, second one didn't bother pulling rank and punishing your father. She'll be right.

I went through Air Force basic a while ago, we called it Entry Controller (EC) or Fire Guard. We had an MTI (Military Training Instructor, MTL's were in tech school when I went through) come up through the back door super quiet while one kid was on EC duty. The MTI snuck around the dorm making noise and then hiding so the EC couldn't find him. He brought a red pen and drew a line across certain trainees necks to show that they were dead.

There was another time when my EC battle buddy and I decided to take turns napping, because fuck sleeping for two hours waking up for an hour or 2 and sleeping for another hour or two. He took first nap shift, everything was uneventful. When I slept it was close to 3:30 am and I lay down on the bench in the shower. About 5 or 10 minutes later the latrine door was booted open, I have no idea how I moved so quickly but I was up, uniform perfect, flashlight on and fake weapon shouldered in less then a second. Our main MTI turns and sees me, looks for a second or two then asks me what the fuck I was doing in the latrine. I didn't know what to say because my brain was still asleep, but I managed to reply, "The latrine is secure sir." He stared for another second then said, "Carry on Trainee Slixem..." and I sped out of the bathroom. I find my EC battle buddy and ask him why he didn't warn me that our MTI was here and his answer was, "I was ruffling the papers really loud, you should have heard."

I also went through boot camp two years ago. We had an MTI (Military Training Instructor), one TSgt Calvin, that liked to play pranks on the trainees and on other MTIs just to fuck with them. We had similar door guard shenanigans, but one thing the story above neglected to mention is that when you have door guard duty your are "armed" with a fake M16 that still has moving parts. As such, you could pretend to draw the gun on a target if need be.

Now this was my sister flight but they had one girl who was pretty terrified of everything. She was especially bad at the door guard procedures and would get lit up by their primary MTI whenever they came through while she was on duty. TSgt Calvin took her aside one day and told her that the only way to master her fear was if she "stood up" to the other MTI. So he told this 5'1" girl that the next time she was scared of an MTI coming through the door she should draw her weapon and load on the door. He also shared this with our flight as to what was going to happen because, as I said, he liked to joke.

Sure enough within a week she was on guard duty again and the MTI came banging on the door trying to gain entry with a bannana instead of an access card. So the girl did as she was told and drew on the door.

I know TSgt Calvin had to physically separate them because the other MTI immediately used their key to break in to get at the trainee but god damn did we laugh in our adjacent bay about that one for a whole week.

BERTthePenguin ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:29:49 on April 18, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Wait, what? How is it a proper tl;dr? It doesn't sum up or shorten the story in any way, it just berates the reader. Am I missing something here?

sirpsychosexxxxy ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 19:44:29 on April 27, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Slightly late reply, but oh well. The reason the tl;dr makes sense is that whilst it doesn't actually sum up the story, it sums up the moral of the story - the whole post is about doing things properly and sticking to the rules, and that whilst the rules in place wouldn't make much difference in basic training, they could potentially save someone's life when used in a dangerous/wartime environment. So whilst it make come off as OP simply berating the reader, s/he is simply just reiterating the underlying theme of the story... Or that's my take on it, at least.

Worst TL;DR, but I'll fix that right now. OP joined the National Guard at 28, and had to go to the same basic training as the air force. He was put on guard duty to guard the dorms. His count was off; sergeant stormed up to tear him a new one. Sgt didn't follow protocol, OP refused to let him in. Turns out, OP did the right thing and he didn't get in trouble. OP was so proud of himself he became the leader of NAMBLA.

The story was about being able to fix your attention and read what's in front of you no matter what.

I know, it seems like the TLDR should be longer, but OP is really good at being concise, and also at giving detail.

oberon ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 20:23:25 on March 14, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I got my ass kicked once for doing this. At the start of our FTX I was assigned to guard the gate (vehicle and pedestrian) that led to our "FOB." I stopped all of the drill sergeants and asked for ID. All of them except one had their IDs out and were showing them before I even opened my mouth, but one of them copped an attitude. I was asking myself whether this was the right thing to do -- we'd never been explicitly told that screening people for proper ID was part of the "game" -- when I heard the guy behind me rack his .50. It's amazing how that one sound can say so much: I've got your back buddy, you're doing the right thing, and P.S. whoever is trying to get in, you'd better fucking do as he says.

To be clear, we were not issued any live ammunition and we didn't even have any blanks for the .50 cal. I'm not even sure such things are made. I knew this, the gunner knew this, and the DS knew it. Everyone knew it, but somehow it was still enough to get him to fish out his ID. We let him in and I thought that was the last of it.

Toward the end of the week, my platoon was OPFOR and another platoon was sent to search our "village" (MOUT training site) for an insurgent. We'd done the searching before and knew how it was supposed to go: they would come in, form a security perimeter, move tactically, ask us predetermined questions, etc. etc. We were all given roles and were supposed to ask for different things like MREs, money, and some other stuff I don't remember that they weren't allowed to give us because of Geneva Conventions or something. Anyway, these guys roll in and just start beating the shit out of everyone. They're in full battle rattle (bulletproof vests with plates, helmets, and a rifle) and we're just in the cloth BDUs with no weapons so there was no contest. I personally got shoved facefirst in the dirt, had gravel shoved into my mouth, and got kicked in the gut. They weren't fucking around.

Our DS rolled up about two minutes into this ass kicking, waved his hands to turn us from hadji into CIA Special Agents, and instructed us to arrest everyone in the platoon for war crimes. Afterward he pulled us aside and said he had no idea they were going to do that and they were going to get smoked for it, but also take this as a lesson on how not to treat people when we deploy.

Anyway, I found out later that the other guys had been specifically instructed to "rough us up a bit" by their DS, who was the one who got mad when I asked for his ID. I have no idea what happened to him or his platoon, but I didn't see him around from then until we graduated a week later.

It was worth it.

salgat ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:59:51 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

That's the whole point of malicious compliance though; you're supposed to comply by the rules but in extreme cases you make an exception even if it technically breaks the rules, but with malicious compliance you make zero exceptions regardless of how exceptional the situation, like in the case of OP's story.

stagfury ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 04:29:24 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

DullSeraph ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 23:58:36 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Seriously I was a bit confused by MTL as I went through BMT in 2013, didn't think it was possible for shit to change that quick.

I was also in Med Hold so besides fucktard recycles I probably have more time being being called trainee than most Airmen (7 months, in crutches for most of that).

Had an MTI try and use ID with his name, but the picture was midnight black and he was a pasty ginger motherfucker. I never understood how people actually feel intimidated by MTIs. They can yell, throw things around and such. At most you get to push the ground or do laps.

I was in charge for most of those months, so damned understaffed that I was a surrogate MTI for nearly the entire day, I was pulled out of training in my second week. By the time I returned to training I was so unfazed by BMT that I felt bored most days. Going from being responsible for 60 or so trainees that were a heavy mix of soon to separated and discharged and a very small amount of trainees that were going to return to training to...actual BMT, easy mode.

Thankfully troublesome trainees were gone within a few weeks as most of them were idiots who popped positive on drug tests.

I honestly miss it, it was the most challenging mess I ever dealt with and I don't regret it. Oddly enough my injury never truly healed and I was medically discharged after serving for 2.5 years.

Let's see if this works : Many years ago I had succumbed to a patriotic fever and enlisted in the Air National Guard.

That TL:DR is exactly the type of shit I have to say whenever someone complains cause I've literally made a 4-5 sentence comment. I like to be concise with what I say, but I feel like that doesn't really matter as its 1 fucking paragraph! I've made comments on YouTube to find the typical "Dude, bro, hahaha, you spent all that time typing that out?? Lmao I ain't readin that shit" whenever it wasn't even directed to them or anyone specific.

It's fucking ridiculous. It makes me wonder if people like this always existed and the internet just allows these people to be seen, or if there's more fucking idiots today..

Awesome job. I went to Navy bootcamp (also had my 28th birthday there). We had a rover and Petty officer of the watch (POOW). One night while on watch an RDC from another division came in, grabbed the POOW's gun and started throwing the ammo (fake) on the floor. I pointed my fake gun at him and told him to stop. He started screaming at me but I kept my gun on him. Eventually he stopped and took me aside and we had a casual conversation about where I was from. Never heard about what happend from anyone.

Element leader blamed me because I didn't tell him to not let the MTI in.

I fucking love the way US Sgts talk. My country has a 2 year conscription and my BMT Sgts were those 1year+ conscriptees. That part of training was disappointing.

Is the code word code word because it was a stuoid technicality or because you can't tell us the actual code word?

"ONE, WHITE COMMON ACCESS CARD, TECHNICAL SERGEANT BUTTHOLE MCPENIS." checks list, sees a penciled in name dated and initialed by our MTI "TECHNICAL SERGEANT BUTTHOLE MCPENIS VERIFIED"

I tried so hard to keep a straight face.

Didn't work.

Ended up running flights and tossing sandbags the next day for some trainees laughing.

Still hilarious.

I was DG monitor in basic. We moved dorms, and changed TIs. The CSMGT came to test, but actually also needed to get in the office. But, he didn't have keys to the new dorm with him. Those keys were at home,or somewhere else.

He tried the fake ID. Rejected per protocol. He tried his real ID. Rejected per protocol. That made him very angry because his name was supposed to be on the entry list, but someone had not updated the list since we moved. The list had a bunch of names of people I didn't recognize. I stuck to protocol, as cooly as possible. Enraged, he left. 45 minutes later, he let himself in, challenged me to my face to explain himself, looking violent. I did. The cursing woke everyone, and he kicked the shit out of a metal trash can until it was a crumpled mess. He woke everyone. Said some short thing about security, protocol, and adherence, and to follow my example.

Sound awesome? No - almost the entire flight completely despised me after that.

This is in fact an incredibly valuable life skill and one I wish the military would work into its recruiting ads.

INT. MILITARY BARRACKS - DAY

A clean-cut 20-something Army specialist in BDUs addresses the camera directly.

SOLDIER

My name is Spc. Robert Mendoza. The Army has taught me about honor, teamwork, and advanced technology. But the most important lesson was what it taught me about myself.

OFF-CAMERA VOICE

Mendoza! I left my office door keys at home! Go get someone to replace the lock and text me when it's done. I'll be at Starbucks.

SOLDIER

Can do, lieutenant! Oh, yeah, I was saying, it taught me that shit like that isn't the end of the world. I learned that if I keep my mouth shut and don't make any suggestions it ends up being a lot less work than doing something that'd make sense.

And sometimes that shit just gets real. Buddy was assigned pay phone duty when the base went on pre-mission lockdown, or whatever it is called (I'm not military, my friend is.). His duty was to prevent the use of the payphone. No off-base communication allowed. He was armed with m-16 and a sidearm. Officer tried to use the payphone, my friend told him he could not, officer insisted, friend pulled the receiver on his rifle to check that a round was chambered ... In an obvious fashion so this officer could see it, then pointed the rifle and said he had orders to shoot if necessary. Friend was not court martialed for threatening an officer ... But that officer was totally pissed at my friend, tough spot to be in I think.

The_Truthkeeper ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:05:55 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

And this is why I could never hope to cut it in any military. 60 seconds of dealing with that sergeant (or really anybody yelling at me) and I would probably end up trying to out-shout and out-insult him. Both of which I'm pretty sure are shooting offenses.

Lots of guys said similar things in the airport while we were waiting for the bus to the base. It was made abundantly clear very early that it would be a losing battle. The MTIs have done this a hundred times. Smart mouth recruits are at a huge disadvantage.

Great story! Throughly enjoyed it. I had several moments like these as an 0481. You're told to practice and enforce "don't confuse my rank with my authority" as long as it was it tact. Since you're herding Marines in the airfield, or granting access, many wanted to pull rank. A couple of times I was shitting myself in the inside as on the outside I was respectfully telling some highly motivated master guns to fuck off. Haha. Good times.

Cheodude ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:22:29 on April 2, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Haha I graduated BMT 11 months ago. I could TOTALLY picture every word and interaction in this post. Since then (maybe even because of your experience) a new rule was added. Entry is allowed either with an ID backed up with the roster, if the person seeking entry has a key, with the code word, or if CQ verbally clears them over the wall intercom.

When I was in BMT, there was a one star not directly in our chain of command that wanted to tour our room in the early evening. Our MTI was in our brother flight's MTI's carpet, and the general was unaccompanied. Props to the trainees pulling DG at the time, they had the balls to deny entry to a Brig. General. After a minute though our MTI came back and gave the gen a tour, and bitched out the DGs for following protocol. Sweet times.

The thing I don't get is why you wouldn't have turned the lights on sooner. Once you realized there was a person in the dorm who "shouldn't" be there, I'd think switching the lights on would be on the short list of next steps. But I've never served in the military so I can't speak from experience.

flynnski ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:37:40 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

It's lights-out time. You don't turn the lights on until lights-on time, at risk of your own ass. Even then, our MTIs did it.

Wildcatb ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:28:36 on March 16, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

"Tl;Dr: Fix your attention span and learn to read a page or two of text. This post may or may not be worth it but someday one will be."

So here's the thing. When I read a post, I read all the way down until my brain registers the Tl;Dr at the bottom. At that point, it steals focus. Nothing I can do will let me finish reading the post until I've read the Tl. It's annoying as fuck. Part of what happens during this process, is my brain reconciling the details in the post with the Tl. The file clerk in my brain stamps those details which made the Tl as important, highlights the appropriate lines, files unimportant details away... It's a weird thing. Your Tl really screwed me up. Damn near got a mental Blue Screen of Death.

I never went through anything nearly as awesome as this, but I could never figure out how to fuck up dorm-guard. Seriously, if they have an ID, they get in. If they don't have an ID, they can fuck off.

The only question I had to ask was "can I be ordered to open the door?" and the answer is "no."

I remember my 1 bad experience. ti came in and walked around then looked dead at me and said. "I smell gas." My first was to sniff the air. I thought hmm I don't smell anything. Then remembered it was a test. So I yelled "Gas, gas, gas!" And around the dorm. After saying that I didn't know what to do. He of course ripped me and said "give me a 341" with such malice. Lol. Will never forget that.

I should have emphasized that it became obvious rather quickly that we had left the realm of "this is just training" and were clearly dealing with a genuinely angry man who had serious responsibilities in the building. But, had I violated protocol, there's still a 98% chance I'd have been punished for it.

Tarmorman ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 16:44:40 on March 12, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Are you kidding? That was brilliantly malicious! He'd let the CQ scream and swear up a storm and probably work up an ulcer or two to enforce protocol only he can override. Fuckin classic.

Tl;Dr: Fix your attention span and learn to read a page or two of text. This post may or may not be worth it but someday one will be.

Get off your high horse. If I read every post on reddit I would have less of a life that I have now. It was nothing to do with poor attention span. I use TL:DR to get a summary. If I like it I'll read the story.

If people do shit like you do I assume they think to highly of themselves and their post.

thepandafather ยท -5 points ยท Posted at 03:48:31 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I call bullshit on this. Air Force basic is not this hardcore. You fucking get pillows to sit on so your hemorrhoids don't flair up. This is some poser ass shit. Do they mess with you in basic? Kinda, but not really. Know why? The training schedule already runs you to the minimum sleep. Were you actually at PJOC school and you just forgot or are you really making it seem harder than it is.

Army regulations state that while in training battalion ALL soldiers are required to get a minimum of 4 hours of sleep. So guess what, if they wake you up in the middle of the night then they have to let you go back to sleep. Guess why they do this? They want you to be able to learn what is being thrown at you, they want you to stress sure but more important is learning the things that will potentially save your life and the lives of fellow soldiers around you.

Now with that said, Airborne, Ranger School, and many other specialty schools are NOT required to allow 4 hours of lights out sleep period each day.

Qorhtomh ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 04:51:18 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

What part of this story is at all hardcore?

thepandafather ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 05:07:01 on March 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Specifically writing letters home to their parents. Fake letters maybe, send them home nope stupidest shit I've ever heard.

Yell and threaten? This is the Air Force we are talking about. They barely even are allowed to yell in Army basic training anymore and you really think they are going to threaten you with more than KP? It's call being a glory hound. Inflating a situation to make it seem like it's difficult.

Source: My basic training was DURING 9/11 meaning Fort Benning went on super lock down. The black hats at Airborne and the cadre at Ranger school barely even raised their voice.

With that said, I get what the OP is saying. The military is all about do what I told you to do how I told you to do it. Don't follow that mantra and you'll feel the consequences. But this isn't our grandfathers military anymore. The days of "threatening and yelling" are nothing compared to what it was when my Grandfather served. I felt like I was at a boys camp. A dick punching, fart joke telling, nature hiking boys camp.
