So a couple of months ago my GF was working at a local fastfood-place saving up some money for exchange-studies.
A customer comes up to her and orders a burger and a coke. She asks him if he'd like the whole meal instead as it is cheaper but gets interupted by a rude reply about "tryning to scam people" and "fool them into spending more money". So she ignores it but accidently enters a meal anyway. She says "ok your total is 5.89" hands him the burger and the drink and continues with the next customer.
A minute later this guy comes back up with a very agressive tone saying "You charged me for the whole meal" and "I just ordered the burger and the drink" etc...
She realising what has hapened just does a return for the meal, hands him the 5.89, enters everything separately and says: ok that'll be 6.39.

He was furious and kept going saying it was crazy and that he wanted to speak to a manager. He kept his acusations going but the manager simply explained that he needed to pay for his order or security would be called. Make no mistake though, that was the only good thing that manager did during her time there.

I also have worked in fast food, and have run into similar situations like yours countless times. Explaining oddities in the pricing structure to guests has been one of my least favorite tasks.
Once a customer demanded i refund the order and ring up a sandwich and drink separately (which cost ~$0.70 more than a meal in this case) on a new ticket. I had to again explain, how because I simply rang up the items separately at full price without fries, the total for the order actually increased.
He got so pissed he drove off, without his money or food.

When I was 18-19 I worked at Taco Bell and after a while I just let people spend whatever amount they wanted. One of the only stressful things about that job was trying to help a bunch of dumb fucking fucks try to save a few bucks.

The McDonald's I work at charges 5p for sauce sachets (they're free if you order nuggets though) but offers free sauce in the pump at the condiment table. When people ask for ketchup or BBQ at the till, I tell them I'm not going to put it on their order or they'll be charged 5p if they're fine accessing the sauce in the paper cups for free. 95% of the time (i.e. If they're nice to me) I'll explain to them that if they ask the people giving them their food for sachets they'll just hand them out.
Pretty simple, huh? The above conversation causes so many problems - people get very defensive when I imply they're wrong in how they're ordering and I have been accused of having an "attitude", but when I haven't given that explaination and put sauce sachets in their order I get accused of theft. Not putting it in the order gets my server colleagues accused of incompetence for forgetting sachets they haven't been told about.
I love my job :)

Its a kinda damned if you do damned if you don't thing. Used to be a money saving thing people would order extra sauce packets and take them home. Mcdonald's and other fast food places got wise to this and started charging for it now people get mad at the poor cashier or the manager gets mad for handing out free packets.

I feel like we aren't going to get a conclusion to this story so I'll make one up.
The customers face turned red and demanded to see the manager.
The customer, in the most obnoxiously evil way possible, spits out "your employee tried to rip me off and then had the audacity to charge me more when I complained!".
The manager, after looking over everything, tells the customer "Well, she was trying to save you money but we appreciate that you wanted to be honest and get charged the proper amount for your meal".
The customer, upon realizing the manager isn't taking his side, lets loose a string of profanity too foul and vulgar to be repeated on the internet. After refusing to leave, the police get called and the customer is arrested for trespass and disturbing the peace. Still brooding over allowing a fast-food worker to get the best of him the customer ends up cursing out the judge. The judge holds him in contempt for 1 week.
While in jail his wife visits him. She tells him that this is the last straw, she is tired of his anger issues and is divorcing him. When he is finally released he finds that his job has fired him. The whole situation has filled him with such massive amounts of anger that he isn't able to make it through another job interview without blowing up.
A couple of months later he is on the side of the road, homeless and unshaven. when the very fast-food worker that he had yelled at a few months earlier walks by with her boyfriend. She feels sorry for him gives him a $20 bill for some food.
As the girl is walking away her boyfriend asks how she knows him. "funny story" she says before telling what happened months prior.
The boyfriend replied "Ha! I know a sub-reddit that would love that story"
The customer, overhearing this, starts to get angry but something inside him snaps. Instead of yelling out, all he does is sob uncontrollably at the realization that he and he alone is the cause of all of his misfortune. He vows to get his anger under control and become a better person. He stands up, holds his head high, takes a deep breath, and starts walking towards redeeming his life. But he doesn't look both ways crossing the street and gets blindsided by a bus. He died instantly.

It's funny how some people just will not listen to reason. Back in the day, a popular clothing chain, known for annoying commercials, khakis, and cargos, used to frequently do a sale on their t-shirts. They were 2 for $10. If you only bought 1 shirt, it was $12.50. There was a lady in front of me who spent, no lie, 5 minutes arguing about how she only wanted ONE shirt.

Can't vouch for clothing, but in my case, I prefer not to upgrade to a meal, even if it's cheaper. The reason is that I'm trying to lose weight, and a meal will include more than I was willing to consume.

If it's black tea it will be even more than coffee.
I was mistaken and can't remember where I read that. Might be the quantities I've mixed up.
From google ... It found that the average caffeine level in the cups of tea (black English style teas) was 40mg vs 105mg in the average cup of drip coffee. The amount of caffeine in coffee or tea depends on a number of factors, including the method and length of brewing or steeping.
CitricCapybara ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 10:55:34 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah tea itself (ie leaves) has more caffeine than coffee, but most of that doesn't make it into the beverage, whereas a lot of coffee's caffeine is transferred from bean to cup.

trentchant ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 15:37:35 on October 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I really think it depends on the tea.

DaddyBeanDaddyBean ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:30:48 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

cyrusol ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 18:16:35 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Forgoing sugar (like your tea) and fat (like low-fat milk instead of normal milk) means you're more hungry on the next meal. In case of sugar also less productive since those usually low amounts of sugar in tea directly go to the brain.
If you're disciplined enough to still eat limited portions every meal that may work well enough for you but for most people it actually doesn't.
A similar problem are saccharin and aspartame, or synthetical sweeteners in general. For some reason they make hungry to such an extent that the average person eats more on his next meal than he was saving by choosing a sweetener over regular sugar.
This may however not always be true for the very large amounts of sugar to be found in juices and lemonade.
Kir-chan ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 20:03:47 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Foregoing sugar isn't going to make you more or less hungry after a few hours. That sugar is burned off or put away as fat way before your next meal.
teh_maxh ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 04:28:59 on November 5, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Sweet tea (at least in the southern US) isn't low-sugar. It's "add sugar until you can stand a spoon in it".
ArmandoWall ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:53:57 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Omneus ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:50:19 on November 6, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
They are essentially the same thing TBH, same approximate ratios of fructose and glucose. If you forego HFCS, you're probably more healthy though, since HFCS is typically in the more unhealthy options. However, not a very real difference between the two all things considered.
ArmandoWall ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:59:58 on November 7, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I can't find the link at the moment, but I read about a study in which they concluded that losing weight gained by eating HFCS was harder than losing the same amount gained by regular sugar. That's why I tend to avoid the former.

The point is that, even if you only need one, you save $2.50 by getting two. You can throw the second in the bin as you leave the store if you really want to, or give it to charity if you're worried about the waste.
ArmandoWall ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:44:19 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Sure, I thought of that. But there are other what-if scenarios we can discuss. For example: what if I'm late for a date, decided my current shirt is not appropriate, go buy a new one with the intention of throwing away the old one? I don't want to deal with an insisting cashier in that circumstance. Just give me my shirt and be done with it.
Sure, this example is a bit convoluted and maybe unlikely but there might be other more sensible what-if scenarios out there.

Ehh, you have to make up really convoluted situations where saving money becomes a negative.
"if I just need one shirt", as you said in the post I was replying to, you should still get two. If you only need one shirt, and some weird circumstances have aligned meaning that saving $2.50 and getting another shirt would be a negative for you, then I guess.
ArmandoWall ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:10:30 on October 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Sure. Personally, I'd take the two shirts and the lower price 99% of the time. My point was that other commenters were too quick to judge those who wouldn't take the offer.
tw1080 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 11:44:17 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It was TWO for $10 or 1 for $12.50. So buying TWO shirts would have SAVED her $2.50. It was the most ridiculous "sale" I had ever seen (and one of those "singles at regular price" things).
fuzzywhiterabbit ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:51:44 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's a weird sale. I misunderstood, then. Thanks.
Saikou6665 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:09:10 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I think they meant $5 per shirt. That would be the only way it would make sense anyway.
fuzzywhiterabbit ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 20:19:58 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I've never understood why retailers do sales like that. $12.50 for a shirt, but $5 for two shirts. It's almost like the shirts aren't worth the $12.50 in the first place.
trentchant ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 15:44:03 on October 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Almost, but I know the $150 shirt I got for $7 was an amazing deal. It must have been close to expiring or something.
I bought 10, I have saved so much money.
throaway_med_advice ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:26:42 on November 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Maybe if they have stock problems in the store and have to get rid of them it makes sense to incentivize the purchases...

"that's more!"
"I know"
"So it's cheaper the other way?'
"Yes"
"HMMPH (mumbling)"
That's about it.

I thank people who ring up the meal for cheaper while understanding that I don't want the fries.
SparklingLimeade ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 05:58:54 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, people are crazy. Tell them "Yes, this option is straight up cheaper. You want to pay a larger quantity of money for a smaller quantity of product?" And some of them will just plain pay more money. I wish they didn't exist so the world would be more sane. Instead they enable completely nonsensical business practices and perpetuate the insanity by voluntarily paying more.
VerySuperGenius ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 07:20:27 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Or they don't want the fries or whatever comes with the meal and think it's ridiculous to waste it.
Kerrigore ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 07:40:19 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
People should see how many pounds of fries get thrown out every day. The margins on fries are ridiculous, I think it was something like you only needed to sell one medium fries to break even on a basket's worth.
Potatoes are one thing we're not short on in North America.

Yeah but a lot of resources still go in to that. I know you aren't excusing it and the same happens with popcorn at movie theaters but still, I wish it didn't happen.

Well, usually they are fries that have been sitting around too long and are cold/stale. They don't really last very long. Sadly no one gets them. Same with orders that get made incorrectly, no one gets to eat them, they just get thrown in the garbage.
Fast food is an incredibly wasteful industry. And most regular restaurants aren't much better. Hell, even the farmers/fruit growers/etc. throw away a ton of food because it's not quite as good as the rest. John Oliver did a great bit on it a while ago.
jrwn ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:53:18 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Just at closing, we would refry the cold fries and people would love them.
themaster1006 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:15:52 on October 25, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's a valid point but it doesn't apply to this story because the cashier only gave them the burger and drink but charged them for the meal. So nothing was wasted and it was cheaper.
Ommageden ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:05:04 on October 18, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Order the meal but tell them to hold the fries

I used to work for a small chain of fast food chicken restaurants. The "Combo" meals came with one side order and one drink. They also offered a "Dinner" for each combo number that came with two sides and no drink, for the same price. Adding on a drink was $1, but adding on a side order was $1.59. So if a customer came in and ordered a #1 Combo with fries and a drink, and an extra side of fries, it came out ~$0.60 cheaper for me to ring it up as a #1 Dinner with an added drink instead.
I cannot tell you how many elderly people yelled at me because they didn't want the "Dinner," they wanted the "Combo." I'd usually try to explain the cost difference, but I'd just ring it up the other way and let them pay more if they were insistent. The customer is always right.
kenba2099 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 02:36:07 on November 1, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
If they were cool and polite, I'd probably just give them the dinner with the drink anyway. If they were dicks, fuck them and let them pay more.
jrwn ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 14:51:08 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Don't argue with the customer. Point it out once, let them pay the price.

One time when I was working carry out window at Pizza Hut I had a particularly nasty woman come to the window. We had a deal going that saved quite a bit I believe it was buy two medium pizzas and they're like 5 bucks. Anyways she said that my coworker told her it would be cheaper if she bought two or something and it ended up being 30 cents more expensive for an entire extra pizza. This lady threw the biggest fit over it actually being more, her mom was in the car I was astounded. Had I not been an employee I would have told her what a retarded bitch she was, what an entitled little snot, but instead I instantly got my manager, he gave her 30 cents and then kicked the wall as she left... Normally asses like this will at least be nice to the manager to make ya look bad but she was even nasty to him lmao.

"accidentally enter a meal", just because it is cheaper doesn't mean you should've leave it like that
