Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs can't contain a smile as he fires off the easy out to win the World Series.

Quoted from /u/westhoff0407, they really do put it best:

"Kris Bryant is smiling as he makes the last out, as his foot slips, a 108 year curse grabbing at his cleats, grasping with its final breath. But Kris Bryant is young. He is laughing. And he is just playing ball."

Hey, thanks for the quote.

Give credit where credit is due! Wouldn't be surprised if a sports writer picks up your quote. It reminded me a lot of some of the old greats in SI writing about moments like these.

Well thank you. I'm not sure where a sports writer would see it! haha Are there many of them on Reddit??

When I was in high school I wanted to be a sports writer, though. The dream died in college, as many do, but your comment means that much more to me for recalling that dream for a time. Thanks again.

Honestly, I wouldn't give up on that dream! If this is sincerely what you can come up with off the cuff, then I can clearly see you doing this. Even if it is a hobby for an online journal or something, definitely you would be able to pursue it. Very talented.

It isn't exactly a book, but if you are actually interested in my writing, here is something sort of whimsical I wrote back in college.

Edit: Warning before you head to that site: Yes I am Catholic. Yes I write about that aspect of my life along with the rest. My writing represents the entirety of my existence. If you don't want to read those posts, I don't want to force you, but just know they are there.

Get some side money from ads and just enjoy doing what you already like on the side, then if you had a large amount you could could always do a Carrie thing and sell a collection as a book. The possibilities man.. but for real. Never too late to start especially in this age of technology. Morgan Freeman didn't have the boom in his career till Driving Miss Daisy at 52.

The dream died in college

As someone who's been writing and broadcasting sports and politics for the past 13 years ..... don't let it. Seriously.

It might not pay a bunch up front, but if you write as eloquently as that quote seems to insinuate that you do, there WILL be someone willing to let you write for them. And considering more and more people are going to to the internet for their sports (nice job sucking at the ONE THING you're supposed to be good at, ESPN, and nice job following them down the tubes of sucktitude, FOX,) there are more positions open for writing/broadcasting then ever before.

Write. Write as often as you can. Send it everywhere, to every sports blog you can find and think of. People will publish it. And if that quote is indicative of your talent, eventually, someone will ask you to write only for them.

Trust me - the opportunities are there. Most people just give up before they find them. Don't.

westhoff0407 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:31:02 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Thank you very much for the encouragement. I wrote much more in college, and it has faded away over time (especially since I landed a 'normal' office job). As I mentioned in this comment, I do actually keep some of the writing I've done on a blog. Comments like yours are giving me motivation to start writing again more consistently.

some of the old greats in SI

Man, old-school SI was so good. I miss reading stories by people who actually wrote about sports with passion and didn't have to continually reference their moral stance on off-field issues, their politics, or their Starbucks habits.

Insiptus ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 19:23:54 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Oh definitely. The great sports writers of old were phenomenal. I'll go as far to say that they were a part of the baseball experience. The atmosphere around the game is what made it "America's pastime" and not "America's sport". The charm has gone away with all the crap that has gone on. This quote is beautiful though, sounds like an ending to an article on the final game of the world series. I miss that.

motonaut ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:38:07 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

steveryans2 ยท 36 points ยท Posted at 18:29:57 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's a better quote than anything I've read on ESPN, SI or any other sporting publication in years. Maybe it's because I'm a Cubs fan but that gave me chills. The imagery of all that pain, years of putting up with incompetent baseball, jokingly saying "next year is our year!" after going 61-101, and finally FINALLY getting it done while on the field is your imagery of a 12 year old kid on a crappy field with rickety metal bleachers and parents watching on a Saturday at noon just playing baseball yet simultaneously knowing the burden of the moment. Beautiful

cantquitreddit ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 20:16:06 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I'd imagine there should be a period instead of a China after 'last out'. Then the next line isn't a complete sentence. Should it be 'curse IS grabbing at his cleats'?

Sorry to be pedantic, I just thought it was odd this was receiving so much attention but it feels off.

westhoff0407 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:37:10 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That is a subordinate clause, so it isn't supposed to be a complete sentence.

cantquitreddit ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:30:52 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks. I'm reading up on it now here, and it says that "The important point to remember about subordinate clauses is that they can never stand alone as complete sentences. To complete the thought, you must attach each subordinate clause to a main clause."

So I guess I took issue with it being a sentence fragment.

It's a nice quote and I hate to be that guy but the curse was not 108 years old. It was from 1945 , the Cubs last visit to the World Series

Insiptus ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:46:40 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I guess the curse is from '45, but I'll give it some leniency since they haven't won since 1908

westhoff0407 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:52:02 on November 7, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I guess it is semantics. The Curse of the Billy Goat started in 1945, true, but I didn't mean just that. I meant more the curse of not winning it all. When the Red Sox won in 2004, everyone spoke about the 86 year curse. They had been to many World Series in that time and never won.

So I guess maybe there were 2 curses on the Cubs. One was broken when they beat the Dodgers, and the other longer curse was broken when Bryant made the throw.

_Big_Baby_Jesus_ ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 16:47:51 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:20:02 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Insiptus ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:21:42 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The haven't won the world serious in 108 though, that's what's being stated as the Billy goat curse.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:06:05 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

From Wikipedia:

The Curse of the Billy Goat was a sports-related curse supposedly placed on the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball franchise in 1945 by Billy Goat Tavern owner William Sianis that lasted in a 71-year period from 1945 to 2016.

Insiptus ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 16:27:12 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

He later on down the thread announced himself as male, I just didn't update it!

MachineFknHead ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:28:41 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

BesottedScot ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 17:59:44 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Shouldn't it be "gasping"? Grasping doesn't make sense when speaking about breath...

Insiptus ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 18:06:37 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

He's saying that the curse is grasping at his foot, to make him skip, fall, and hopefully mess up his final throw, with all the strength left in the curses final breath. I too misread it once.

BesottedScot ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 18:12:36 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

But he already says the curse is grabbing the cleats. Saying grasping with its last breath implies its the breath doing the grasping. And if he meant the curse instead its redundant due to the 'grabbing'.

Insiptus ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:29:21 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's a literary technique that is employed, most famously, by the Bible. Repetition breeds a sense of importance, which I believe he was trying to convey. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that.

Or I just really like the quote, and you are correct, haha. I definitely see your point.

[deleted] ยท 113 points ยท Posted at 17:54:26 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

The W is a Cubs tradition that dates back to the 1930's it's not just a thing fans have made up to signify a win. It started essentially when a company who sponsored the cubs spring training facility who's logo was a blue flag with a white capital 'W' used it as advertisement on game fliers and programs. It became an symbol that fans were used to and then wrigley started using it after every home win for everyone in the area to see, it became a tradition that to this day the Cubs continue. Fans traveling home on the CTA trains could see the flag coming home from work every day and see if the Cubs won or lost. Today the white flag with a blue 'W' is something almost every fan has.

I_worship_odin ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 21:34:17 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Also, there's an "L" flag for a loss, with the opposite color scheme of the W flag. Although no one is going to wave that one around.

Browner sucks yes, but he literally played on the Seahawks the year before and said after the game that he told Butler to expect the play because that's what the Seahawks try to do on the goal line. If you throw, you get two cracks at the TD. If you run, you may only get one. Did it work out that way? No. From my couch, would I have put it in lynchs hands? You bet. Does it matter? No.

walkingdisasterFJ ยท 39 points ยท Posted at 16:38:44 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They still had a timeout so they would have had two chances either way.

[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 19:27:29 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think the thinking <which I think is flawed> was that if you run it on second and are stopped, you pretty much have to throw on third down and they'd be expecting that. But if you throw on 2nd (which they're not expecting) and its incomplete, you can run it or throw it on each of the next two downs and maintain the element of surprise.

I think the flaw is (particularly with the benefit of hindsight) is that you have Lynch who's a beast and you don't need the element of surprise to get one yard.

gologologolo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:51:53 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Why would they pretty much have to throw it? They can still run it, even closer from 3rd down and 4th down

yakatuus ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:35:06 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

If they ran it there on second down, and not get in, they have to call timeout. Third and goal now, no timeouts, :23 seconds left, down four. If you pass on third you can do either on fourth, so you have to pass on third.

The good question is if Lynch had fumbled at the 1 yard line would we be saying he should have thrown there to preserve the timeout?

gologologolo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:44:32 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They could run it, but then they'd only have 1 bite at the apple (no more timeouts so game would expire). If u want two shots you'd throw.

My entire summer 2013 I felt the crying Jordan face hanging over me. My whole summer 2014 I felt like Kris Bryant throwing an out at first. Everyone where I live hates the Spurs so 2013 was especially rough and 2014 was so so sweet.

Monkey_Junk ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:16:48 on November 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I feel you, friend. I've been a Spurs fan as long as I remember. Seeing Duncan show the frustration at that missed layoff killed me, cause he's usually so composed. Seeing them just dismantle the Heat the following year will be one of my most treasured sports moments.

myexguessesmyuser ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 16:16:22 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The only thing I didn't like about the result of that game was seeing Sherman lose. That dude balled out of control and I felt bad for him personally for not winning. Otherwise, completely happy the Pats won.

HillBotShillBot ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 17:52:22 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Funny you say that after the game he basically said exactly that and that he never was on the team that won it all. Not to even mention the legacy of the win.

Duh they pay a lot of money for MLS rights and have seen a 32% increase in viewership year-over-year since implementing constant time-slots and better lead in games.

Attendance at MLS games is on average higher than NBA and NHL games, helped by the fact some MLS teams have major attendance like Seattle Sounders, Orlando City, NYCFC, and Toronto. And Atlanta enters the league next year and is reporting to already have sold 30,000 season tickets.

It isn't a top league in the country yet, but it has rapid support and is growing every year.

I'm sure it's crushing but I have to figure that given the expectations your club had coming into the season, it's easier to stomach.

The Cubs had this expectation on them. The Indians weren't even really supposed to compete for a playoff spot, much less dominate the AL the way they did en route to almost spoiling the hopes of a stacked Cubs team with the biggest of chips on their shoulder.

ladyvader119 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:00:57 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I live in Ohio and the Indians are definitely my favorite AL team, but I'm also descended from generations of Cubs fans on my dad's side. The last time the Cubs appeared in the World Series, my grandpa was a 20 year old listening to the game on the radio from a ship in the South Pacific on his was home from WWII and he went his whole life without seeing them win one. I've definitely been thinking of him through this whole post season. It was basically my ideal World Series and the Cubs are the only team I'd want to see beat the Indians.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:52:15 on December 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I know this is late but I wouldn't call this play that routine. It was a slow grounder that he had to charge and then scoop and throw in one motion. Those are easy to mess up, even for the pros.

That being said, Bryant is a pretty good fielder so I'm sure he knew he would make the play.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that for something like the World Series they have cameras that are there simply to follow individual players on the field for the entire duration of the game. Like, this is the Kris Bryant camera that only watched Kris Bryant.

Each camera man has specific direction for any play during a game. Your job may be to follow the ball, while the Iso cam stays on the player who made the play. Baseball can get crazy with all the different camera assignments on different kinds of situations, though, so it definitely helps to have an experienced crew.

ForeverFun ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:39:44 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

ray bourque was a well respected player and defenceman for the boston bruins. he was the face of the team, and played for them for over 20 years, while being captain for 15, often turning down higher salaries out of loyalty to the team. He is regarded as one of the best defencemen of all time. he brought the bruins to the stanley cup final twice, losing both times to the edmonton oilers. towards the end of his career, boston had not won the stanley cup in many years, so it was looking like he might retire as one of the best players to not win the cup. while boston's team in 2000 was missing a step, bourque requested a trade to a team that was likely to make the playoffs to have a shot at winning the cup. his many years of service to the team made the request a no brainer

several months before the playoffs, he was traded to the playoff competitive colorado avalanche and added a lot of value to the already good team, helping them get to the semi-finals, where they lost a pretty grueling game 7 in a best of 7 series.

he returned with the avalanche the next year, and as a 40 year old, finished runner up for the Norris trophy (for top defenceman in the league, an award he won 5 times). they battled it all the way to the stanley cup final, and won in a game 7.

When the cup is awarded, the commissioner hands the cup to the team captain (who was Joe Sakic for the avalanche), who is the first to lift the cup, and then does a celebratory skate around the arena, followed by the others in turn.

Sakic took the cup and without lifting it, immediately handed the cup to Bourque, ending the longest period on record between a player beginning their career in the NHL and winning the cup, and as the goalie for the avalanche put it "a name was missing form that, and now it is back to normal." The respect displayed by Sakic for such a universally loved player make this one of the all time classic moments in stanley cup history. Bourque retired that year.

I can distinctly remember some baseball practices as a kid, where a friend would say something that got me laughing hysterically, and I would be just completely useless during whatever drill we were doing. It's a really hard feeling to describe. Coach is yelling at you, "stop screwin' around; get your head in the game!" and you're trying your best, but for whatever reason you're just so tired and lethargic from laughing that you can hardly throw the ball straight.

I instantly remembered that feeling when I saw them replay this part last night. The way he bites his lip as he throws, trying to hold back all that excitement to focus on the throw... shit, it doesn't get any better than that. R/MadeMeSmile gold right here. Haha

That they blew it doesn't make the throw more impressive. It just makes it embarrassing that two MLBers screwed up a toss to first.

I expect somebody who is paid millions of dollars to play baseball to be able to make a play that is made daily in highschool games. This makes you so upset you've started insulting me and making assumptions about my life. Maybe step back from the screen and take a breath there champ.

If somebody drops a fly ball, during the playoffs or otherwise, that is embarrassing. They should make that play. Just like in this gif, he is expected to make the play. If he whiffed on the throw if would be embarrassing as well.

BestestTeacher ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:28:23 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Except it's not a daily play that's comparable to a high school game. This is the bottom of the 10th of a world series game for a team that hasn't won in 108 years. The pressure is enormous. If he messed up and the Cubs lost, the hate would be intense.

The game isn't purely about physical ability. Psychology is a HUGE component.

You don't need experience to know that's an easy play. Errors happen sometimes but they're called errors because they shouldn't happen. This is an easy play no matter when it is. Game 7 of the world series or game 1 of the regular season it's easy. Errors happen but that doesn't make it a harder play to make.

You're making me dumber. Look. I don't need experience to know that a professional should be able to do their job. That's why they get paid. You're making this about me or any other normal person. That's not what this is about. You're trying to argue but you sound like an idiot. Go back, reread everything, and try again. A pro should be able to do their job, especially an easy aspect of it, which that play was. That's all I'm saying. It isn't about me or you. He has experience and me as a bystander knows that he should make that play 100/100 times.

Or maybe I've done shit under pressure? Everyone has. And when I say it's easy, I don't mean compared to a normal citizen or a child or anyone other than a MLB player. That play is easy for a MLB player who has natural talent, has worked their ass off, has trained enough to make it easy for them. Any professional doing their job right makes it look easy regardless of the profession. The play he made, in comparison to every other play, and also only including MLB players, was easy. If I compare his ability to a high school player or college player or someone who doesn't play, then it isn't easy for them, but when that's the job he gets paid millions to do, it's easy for him. Because he put the work in. Same with every other job.

Basketball players who are terrible at shooting free throws get a lot of shit for it and are often pulled from the game in clutch time. Football players known for dropping passes a lot aren't generally used as often as more reliable players. Baseball players who miss throws to first is a little different because it isn't a chronic problem they have. Basketball players have to shoot free throws if fouled. Football players have to catch if they're a receiver. Not every baseball player has to throw to first. There are specialized positions. Basketball being the exception where every position shoots free throws. If you recall earlier I said errors have been made before. That doesn't make it any less easy. Once you achieve a level of greatness sometimes the easy ones are the easiest to mess up because of overconfidence and whatnot. Doesn't make it any more or less of an error. I'm not saying it's impossible to make an error as you make out what I'm saying to be. I'm saying making an error on an easy play doesn't make it a hard play, it just makes it an error. Also shooting a free throw isn't a play come on man.

I know that people quote what happened since last time they won, but it's worth noting that generations of their fans have lived and died without getting to see their Cubbies win. This includes their famed announcer Harry Caray. You might know him, if you're not a baseball fan, as the guy Will Ferrel immitates on SNL hosting a show about space. He was born 6 years after the Cubs won, and died 18 years before they won their next. It was truly bittersweet, the amount that happened in between. I don't think there was a dry eye for true baseball fans, and even if Cleveland won, it would've been a special moment. Even as an Orioles fan, if it isn't my O's I hope Cleveland is next up.

It's times like this are the reason baseball is a really special sport, so many fans coming together, whether their team won or lost, to celebrate something like this. I get teary eyed everytime I see those guys celebrate afterwards, there's just something about their cheering and jumping and hugging that reminds me of reasons I got into baseball as a kid, the pure joy of the sport.

Football/basketball/baseball/hockey. The champion of any of those American leagues would destroy a team comprised of the best players in the world that play outside of the American leagues. It would be a bloodbath.

blacksun9 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:31:59 on November 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

He/she said that any American league would destroy A TEAM COMPRISED OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD OUTSIDE AMEIRCAN LEAGUES. Look to where we can test that theory like the world cup of hockey or the oylmpics. Canada usually beats the U.S. and Russia holds their own.

I'm American btw
