It's a skill I suppose. It's basically just an exercise in approximating the answer to hard-to-answer questions using estimates for measurements that you can comfortably estimate. The skill is in identifying easy-to-estimate measurements that help answer the question, and to a lesser extent having the knowledge/intuition to produce good estimates.
I think this kind of undersells how wild it was that he grabbed a base number of 12 million as the population of Canada in 1916 to start everything off of.

I'm taking Ken obviously but even IF they were close in knowledge, once the knowledge between top tier players is that close it comes down to the buzzer and Ken Jennings buzzer skill is unmatched. I think you underestimate just how good the best in the world are at things. NL would get trounced. He's a smart dude at trivia but there's like 5 levels of smart above him.

That's just an admission you're too stupid to understand what's going on. If you're unbiased, you should have overestimates and underestimates at the same rate when finding the conditional probabilities at each step, so the end result should be pretty close if you're granular enough in your steps.

Well Canada's population was actually 8m in 1916 so they had ~7.5% of the total population in the military.
Australia had 5m people in 1916 and had 417k enlisted which is 8.3%.
Pretty similar percentages, he just was estimating off incorrect numbers and lucked into the right answer.

That's just an admission you're too stupid to understand what's going on. If you're unbiased, you should have overestimates and underestimates at the same rate when finding the conditional probabilities at each step, so the end result should be pretty close if you're granular enough in your steps.

Yes it's not like my work literally involves statistical analysis and what you're saying is complete nonsense. You can get within the same order of magnitude if you have a decent enough knowledge of the topic you're estimating over, but getting an exact or meaningfully precise result when you come from incorrect assumptions is just luck
