It's okay. As a former people pleaser, I can tell you that it's possible to evolve and learn how to put your own happiness before every tom, dick, and harry you deal with.

Just be vigilant and try to think about conversations before you have them, as much as possible. I still rehearse conversations if I know they are coming - saves me a lot of potential headache, because my first instincts usually suck.

Yup, I work in a time sensitive setting and I always tell my techs to tell the patients 10-20 minutes longer than they think it'll take. It gives you the buffer in case something goes wrong, AND the patient is generally pleased when something is done earlier than they were expecting.

My work has me meeting with 5-6 people a day in various locations and a lot of time I get delayed etc. I used to hate telling people that it would be 2-3 days out for that appointment and would try to shmooze em over saying that this date would be worst case but I can probably try to make it earlier, and then it blows up in my face when I had to push it another day back due to delays.

Now I tell em an extra day and whatever grief you’re gonna have about it will last three minutes. “Hi can’t make it till x, k?”

I'm a people pleaser too and I've recently found that what really pleases people is if you are straight up with them.

They do this at restaurants and for the lines at Disney land too. It’s usually at least 10 min less than they say.

Had a manager tell me something that's always stuck with my when I did that regarding a customer's order. Never over promise and under deliver.

But you're already late, by saying you'll be 10min when it's actually 15 is just going to disappoint them twice. By saying 20min and then actually being 15 you'll please them in the end. I learned this at one of my first jobs, I usually started at 14:30 but occasionally would get a phone call in the morning asking if I could come in early. I'd say I'll get there for X time and always be 10 minutes early. They loved me. It also doubles that if you are ever late you have a good reputation and they are very understanding.

The thing is, they usually don't give a fuck how long it is.

Its a hard lesson to learn to budget your time. I do alot of travelling for work and you have to give yourself extra whilst navigating random road conditions. Especially hard in the face of pushy supervisors. As the great Scotty once said 'tell 'em 2 hours, do it in one.' Or something to that effect.

Sure, but there are many cases where you need wiggle room. I used to work in retail and yes, I could probably do an engraving in 20 minutes. But working alone, what if I have more customers? What if something happens and I have to redo it? I’d give myself plenty of time, then the customer would be happy if I messaged them in 40 minutes saying it was done.

They dont want to know that you're going to be late. They want to make it difficult/painful for you to be late so that you're encouraged to be on time to avoid the pain...

Also, any long form with many questions on (doctor office) is a deterrent to make you go away... you know this because anyone you submit the form to ALWAYS asks you the same questions verbally and have not read the form. Only people willing to fill out the tedious form really want to be there.

My job doesn't require you to call if you're running late, but I've discovered that sometimes if you do call in they'll count it as requested time off. This means you can be a few minutes late without a penalty on your record.

Living 5 minutes away you should be at work 10 min early minimum, no excuses

I'm fine if someone is habitually 5 minutes late. Im salaried so i show up on time (usually early), but my techs are hourly. If they want to come in 5 minutes late, it's their paycheck that suffers. The one person i can think of that comes in 5 minutes late every shift is also amazing at her job. She also opens with me, so the pharmacy isn't too crazy in the first 5-10 minutes (usually...)

I have ADHD and one of my comorbid disorders with that is dyscalculia. I literally do not understand time and can’t conceptualize how long a task should take, how much time has passed, or how to estimate timelines. I also have a lot of anxiety around time based tasks and somehow feel disproportionately stressed by deadlines AND unable to start tasks because I feel like i have sooo much time to finish them so I can definitely do something else right now.

I used to be late all the time to everything until I started going to therapy for executive functioning skills and learned ways to cope with it. I’m still sometimes late but it’s less frequent and the amount of time I’m late by in those rare instances is a lot less.

Another respondent with ADHD, here, but comorbid with ASD and OCD. I try to utilize my time efficiently. Issue is, I also experience a compulsive need to finish tasks. When this task presents itself as a rabbit hole (studying, reading, or even browsing reddit), satisfying that itch becomes a tangential approach. I will often set myself in motion within five minutes of the necessary timeframe, which lands me at my destination within five minutes of the scheduled mark. Sometimes five minutes before, sometimes five minutes late, but typically in between the two.

Although I am aware that planning to arrive early is the safest method by which to ensure punctuality, there is some part of me with which this wasted time is hard to reconcile. If I average ten minutes of early arrival time each day, I lose 60 hours every year. In 30 years, I will have lost 76 days of my life to this commitment.

This is somewhat irrational, since all time is spent, and none of it intrinsically wasted. But these are the calculations my mind makes whilst squandering the three minutes by which I end up late to work.

Most of the times where my techs are late it's either because they were traveling from a college class to work, or they have kids and the babysitter was late or dropping them off at daycare took longer than anticipated.

But that's a "life" thing that happens, so I don't penalize people for that.

My rule of thumb as an employer was I want to know you’re going to be late AS SOON AS YOU KNOW, which is virtually always before your actually late. If you are an hour away and it’s ten minutes past already, you knew a LONG time ago you were not going to make it. The exception being oversleeps. It sucks, it happens, just tell me what’s happening!

I on the other hand am just a shit person. No body askes why im late to the bar any more. They just know i didnt want to be on time. In my defence im on time for other things. Its just that i really struggle with the early part of parties where your not with the people you like most because theyr yet to arrive so you have to make small talk with almost strangers. I chose to skip it and be an hour late

Yeah, I do. Because how you were raised is one of the biggest influences in behavior. I have to work hard to undo the damage from my childhood and I’m not always successful.

For the record though, I realize that my actions are no one else’s direct fault but mine. I’m actually very good at being on time, but I make mistakes and I fall into behavioral patterns that I developed to get by, even if they aren’t healthy.

You shouldn't and here is why:

No stranger will ever be able to see the entire picture of your life. So your explanations, however thorough will always be incomplete.

What you really hate is the inability for human to know a stranger so completely that they will be able on the spot to tell that this stranger is an honest person.

You don't have these powers and others don't have it either.

People meeting for the first time, in ancient times, was always a stressful event for this precise reason. And simply assuming the other person is a good guy when to you have no tangible proof that these strangers are decent people ( or better yet, a documented history of good behavior) could be a costly mistake.

Accept people taking precautions when they don't know you as natural and think of it as a relationship building process. Sometimes you will prove yourself to be decent and reliable other times you will fuck up. But over time they will get a good picture and hopefully it will be positive.

I used to feel the need to explain things all the time. I think one of the biggest changes was realizing that when someone is upset with me or something of that nature, I have 2 responses. Mentally, I can know I didn't do anything wrong; and spiritually/emotionally I can still feel as if I did. So there's a conflict or an imbalance.

In those moments people can feel the need to Justify, get Angry, become Defensive, or Explain. Forms a nice little JADE acronym. For me personally, I just had to realize I had nothing to explain or justify that was going to help or change that person. I have to relinquish that responsibility because it's not mine to hold. If they ask, I'll explain. Other than that, I have to let them alone.

This doesn't work for social roles where people are higher than you (bosses, teachers, parents, etc.). This is just on equal grounds.

For once it's usually the same behavior of people who try to get out of it and make excuses. For another it usually wastes time and is just not helpful to the situation anyway therefor just putting more stress towards a probably fucked up situation anyway.

Try to think this way: will the explanation actually help the situation? Aka will it help find a solution? Or will a simple "sorry won't happen again" be enough already? If people do want an explanation they ask. If they don't believe you it's sadly on them and not on you.

I think when you try to explain or over-explain, it makes the receiver think (probably even subconsciously)... Why does this person feel they need to convince me they're telling the truth? Oh, because they're lying.

I had a rookie cop stop me on my motorcycle for going 110 in a 45mph zone. When he got to my bike he asked for my license and registration. I told him my license had been suspended and the registration is unknown because it's stolen. He then asked to look in my saddle bags. To which I replied no, because of all the loaded guns with no serial numbers inside. He then asked to search my person. I also declined this because I was on meth and a little gittery and I didn't want him to mess up my bag of cocaine. This made the lad visibly shaken. He asked me to sit on the curb until he could call for his superior officer. To that I complied. Jokes aside, never do or say anything memorable like this. They pull over dozens of people every day, and when they testify months later if you contest the ticket in court (and they show up, since sometimes they don't and then the case is typically thrown out), they're more likely to remember you. It's easier to make a case if they can't honestly remember it.

If you go to court and it's a speeding ticket, ask the cop for documentation on when the radar gun was last calibrated. They grow inaccurate over time and need to be recalibrated frequently to keep them within a reasonable margin of error. And, if the officer hasn't been properly trained or used the gun while your car was not on a flat road or when the line of sight was obstructed.

Anyway, just be polite and unremarkable, but of course don't apologize or admit any wrongdoing. Play dumb if you have to.

EDIT: To people saying this wouldn't work, I saw this exact strategy work while sitting in the courtroom awaiting my own speeding trial. You (or your lawyer if you bring one) are allowed to cross-examine the police officer, who is a witness. If they don't have documentation showing a recent calibration, then the case for speeding becomes very weak very fast.

Last time I got asked that, I answered truthfully. "Not until I saw you." I was running late, and on a highway that crossed county lines going from 50 to 35. The moment I saw him I realized I was on the wrong side of that speed limit sign and slowed down. You're better off saying something like "the speedometer said x" with x being within the speed limit. You diminish intent if you followed the law but were victim of a faulty guage, and you might make them question the accuracy their reading if there's a competing one being given by the vehicle.

I’ve had an Arizona state trooper go on a 15 minute rant about how his speed gun was just calibrated and how the brand new car with 300 miles I rented was clearly reading wrong on the speedometer. 0% chance it was the other guy he clocked that sped off into the sunset since there was only me him and the trooper who exited to get onto the overhead ramp to clock “me” even though I’d spent the last 5 miles behind both of them.... absolutely mind boggling shit. God bless cameras though since I had 3 inside the car including one pointing at the speedometer lol

I got pulled over by a cop my first day back to work from maternity leave. He asked me if I knew how fast I was going. Speed limit was 65 there and my best guess was honestly 70/75? Cop got FURIOUS at me, told me I was going over 95 miles an hour and how the HELL could I possibly think that kind of speed is normal?! Do I just ALWAYS drive that fast and I'm just somehow used to it? 

I was already nervous about going back to work, and in a new car, no less, and now here's this cop yelling at me like an angry-disappointed parent. I just completely broke down. Crying, panicking, verbal diarrhea about maternity leave and postpartum anxiety and how my old car was a bucket of bolts that would start rattling like a paint shaker if I went any faster than 70, and we got this new car so it'd be safer for the baby but I haven't even driven it because I've been scared to leave the house with her because she's just so tiny, and I had no idea how fast I was going and oh God, how long was I going that fast? Oh God, what if I'd hit someone? Oh, God, what if I'd had my baby in the car? I started hysterically thanking him for pulling me over because oh God what if he hadn't, which sent me into another panic spiral--I'm going to be so late, it's my first day back, I'm going to get fired. Maybe I SHOULD be fired, how the hell could I go back to work when my baby is just an infant and oh God I've never been away from her for a whole day before, it's like a part of me is just ripped out… 

I vaguely remember fumbling for my meds and panic-explaining that I have an anxiety disorder, I have a prescription for these, and he said, "Wow, yeah, uh, I can see that."

Oh, and all this crazy emotional drama triggered letdown, so I was leaking breastmilk through my shirt throughout all of this. 

He didn't give me a ticket or even a written warning. (paperwork for him writing me just a warning for going, like, 96 mph would have looked REALLY bad for him so I think he decided "this never happened.") He apologized (??!?!), told me to calm down, pay attention to what I'm doing and go by what the speedometer says, instead of how the car feels.

TLDR: You CAN volunteer too much information to the cops, but only if you're a genuinely-panicking white female (I acknowledge my unearned privilege) and the TMI you're volunteering is so uncomfortably personal that they just want to not think about it anymore and get the hell out of there.

You might want to look in your rear view mirror to check that you're white before making this joke. Otherwise you might end up making the officer feel scared and get yourself killed.

Have you tried not speeding? Works for me 100% of the time.
