I posted this a few weeks ago. They just turned 7 weeks yesterday.

The pool is small, it's one of those kiddie pools. I plan on upgrading once they get bigger. Also, you may be wondering why the Pekin just dips her head in. Well...that's a good question. I have a different picture that has ALL of them in it (I have 7 ducks)....except the Pekin. The Pekin does not like the water. She puts her head in, she'll eat the clover I put into the water, etc. But when the other ducks are in, she'll just walk around the edges dipping her head in then she'll lay down, until the rest get out. I emptied their pool earlier, some of the water came back into the pen, she laid in THAT dirty water. -_- I just don't know.

I've witnessed her get in twice now. Each time she freaks the fuck out and jumps out, while also scaring the shit out of the others that are in there. Not sure what her problem is lol. I didn't upload the one that had all 6 in.

That's copied from my previous post.

I'm glad you liked them! They are quite therapeutic. My desk is right next to a window that overlooks the yard. I pretty much have my blinds pulled up the entire time I'm sitting at my desk so I can just look over and see what they're up to.

PM_ME_FUN_STORIES · 3 points · Posted at 01:56:34 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

How did you go about getting ducks? And also, do you clip their wings, or have plans for winter? I have no idea if ducks are migratory, but I thought it'd be worth asking about.

[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 11:29:48 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

I personally got them from Metzer Farms. (I'm not associated with them in any way) but I did have good luck with them and I'm quite happy with them.

From my understanding, not many domesticated ducks can fly therefore they do not migrate. I have Runners, Khaki Campbell's, and one pekin. The pekin is too heavy to fly. I'm assuming that they are like quail, specifically cortunix because that's what I have. I was told quail cannot fly. Well, they technically can't. But they can get about 6 feet in the air and go for very short distances. Not really a big deal or anything but they can "fly" more than I originally thought.

So the ducks wings are not clipped. I can give a better answer once they a bit older. I just started raising them so I don't have any full grown ones yet.

This is part of the reason I bought them straight from Metzer instead of, say, Tractor Supply. TS even says that they may migrate since they give you random ducks, I didn't want to clip their wings if I didn't have to. Plus I love Runner ducks.

PM_ME_FUN_STORIES · 2 points · Posted at 18:03:54 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Cool! Thanks for the information. I might look into getting a duck! I like them a lot, although I don't know what kind of care they require... I'll have to do some research.

[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 18:31:38 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

IMO, they don't take much care. The basics that they need are: space and protection (dogs and/or wild animals) We have an occasional stray dog as well as foxes, coyotes, and raccoons. And the fox has been stalking our birds for a bit.

They're pretty easy to care for. People say water is optional,...but have you ever seen a duck in water!? (with the exception of my pekin, of course) They're extremely happy with water, but to each their own.

It's a little different when they're younger and are in the brooder, but it's just a little more time for changing on the bedding and such. I put mine out a bit younger than most BUT it was super hot outside so it was fine.

Also, I'm not sure if you literally meant "a" duck. But I'd highly recommend at least two ducks. They are very social and will be very lonely. Most people cannot be around their animal (regardless of what it is) all day everyday.

And there are A LOT of different breeds that are "good" for different things. Eating (pekin) egg laying (Khaki, plus others) etc. Some are better foragers than others as well.

tl;dr: They're pretty easy to take care of and offer several benefits. Highly recommended you don't only get one duck.

edit: and sorry about the long post. Just realized. Good luck with your duck adventure. If you do decide to get any, there is of course /r/backyardchickens (they do ducks as well) because /r/backyardducks isn't as active. And I'd recommend backyardchickens.com (again, they do all kinds of poultry, the name is misleading) and I'll be willing to answer any questions too. I'm still new and learning but it's been fun. No regrets.

But, dude, you weren't helpless. You changed your circumstances. Please, please, please remember that the next time you're depressed. Depression is a shitty, shitty, deep hole, but there are always ways that we can change our circumstances to improve the situation. It's not easy and often we have to reach out for help, but options are always there. Depression is a bitch and needs to be slapped into submission like the bitch that it is. I hope you can joke about it soon because the less gravity we give something the less it will pull on us.

Silverjeyjey · 3 points · Posted at 05:49:07 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yeah i like to talk about it so other people won't feel alone. I was desperate cuz I knew about depression before it even hit me. I tried to find the stressor causing it but I really couldn't. I wasn't out of shape, my girlfriend wasn't cheating on me, I had money, etc.

But my mind felt so weighed all the time that I couldnt get engaged with communicating with people and this made me feel more alone. I had a hard time appreciating the little things and only looked forward to sleeping so I would be spared feeling like that all the time.

I'm just glad I finally did some changes that finally worked on my own despite using a therapist, journals, CBT, etc. I slowly got better. I just fear if it got progressively worse I probably wouldn't be here today..

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 06:09:11 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Like you said, your kind of depression doesn't happen all at once, so the cure won't either. Remember that for next time. Because I'm 80% sure there will be a next time. Knowing the cause is invaluable, but it sounds like you stumbled on a treatment without knowing, which is still awesome. Try to figure out what got you there and don't ever forget what got you out. I'm really glad you dug your way out.

I know the pain. I hate going to bed, I can even get itchy and nauseous. About a year ago my therapist told me that probably something scary had happened to me during sleep, and that's the reason I feel kinda insecure.

I don't want to make a blanket statement about your therapist, but that sounds pretty pseudo-sciency to me.

I stopped seeing them eventually (and therapist is not the best term because it was therapist+doctor), but this particular point makes sense for me because I had pretty frightening experiences in night time. Some of our biggest troubles are outdated defense reactions.

I make myself tired (outdoor walks etc.), no caffeine in the evening, dim light and no loud sounds an hour before going to bed, avoid stimulation like news which make you upset/anxious, action movies and so on. As for nervousness itself, I'm still trying to solve this.

Yeah, this is bullshit. Itchy and nauseous = tired as fuck and conflicted over the decision to go to bed already. With a dose of dread and shame thrown in for good measure. I've felt it too.

It's serious. When people say "I'm here if you need to talk" they've already shown that they don't get it. If you're really and truly suicidal you don't need to talk. You have nothing to say. It's painfully obvious that death is the only solution. You're not crying for help. You want to die.

Source: Was suicidal.

Robertovilla88 · 3 points · Posted at 00:54:47 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Its pretty dark down there, I've been several years and the least you want to do is talk your problems As you said on a post below, medication isn't the solution, and getting professional help is only 20% of the solution, you must be ready to start a change in order to work, so as a personal piece of advise from own experience, change environments, trust me, the problem its not life. The problem is the people you are surrounded by. I don't mean "change your friends, move to another department" I mean change your whole life, do a major reset, and if that doesn't work, so it again. It works eventually.

Change to a poor country if necessary, helping people with bigger problems than you really helps settling down the situation eventually you forget about your own problems.

If you can't change environments because of fear or a family burden (newborn babies, terminal parents, etc) change habbits, a gym and a benchmark really helps solving things out. Suicidal rates are real, and people are losing interest in life is a very common thing, but as well, people learning to live again is not a rare thing, myself is a clear example of that. I know you don't care about this, but I hope I infected your subconscious with an idea, in always around if you wish to discuss how awful or soon to be awesome your life can be.

Rezzinu · 2 points · Posted at 00:28:02 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

They make medications for the symptoms you listed. Have you tried to talk to a doctor about your situation yet?

[deleted] · 8 points · Posted at 00:35:36 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)*

They make medications for the symptoms you listed.

The problem isn't my mind. The problem is my life.

Antidepressants are rarely a solution. I know more than my fair share about pharmaceuticals (senior in college studying Bioinformatics), and I can tell you that if people were more educated on the effects of mental health medications, a lot fewer people would be taking them.

And a huge part of the problem is that people think it's crazy to want to die. They completely rule out the option that you can make the rational choice to stop living. You're robbed of agency because you're "unwell".

arcticfunky · 5 points · Posted at 00:57:35 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

But don't you think if you're depressed and suicidal, your brain might not be working right, like animals have it hardwired in their brains to survive? That's what I tell myself at least. Not that i'm suicidal but the thought comes and goes.

[deleted] · 5 points · Posted at 00:59:19 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

But don't you think if you're depressed and suicidal, your brain might not be working right, like animals have it hardwired in their brains to survive?

No. Humans have consciousness. Are you saying that if you were trapped in the twin towers, you'd choose to burn to death rather than jump on your own?

arcticfunky · 2 points · Posted at 01:03:32 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

I don't think choosing a quicker way to die when death is imminent is the same as choosing to off yourself because you're extremely depressed. If one wasn't depressed, then they wouldn't be suicidal right?

[deleted] · 3 points · Posted at 01:08:21 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

when death is imminent

Death is always imminent. That fire might be a lack of prospects, a mountain of debt, or terminal illness.

Depression is just chronic sadness. And if you have long term problems in your life, of course you'll be depressed.

arcticfunky · 2 points · Posted at 01:23:30 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yeah but you know what I mean. Either way in the twin towers that persons gonna die, so why not jump and end it quicker. But being depressed because you're unhappy with the bullshit in your life isn't the same because there's still the chance you can change it. People have done it, and there's evidence that mindfulness and CBT can turn one's life around pretty much permanently.

Not just saying this to be a do gooder hoping to save you either, I'm depressed myself, for like 5 or 6 years now, probably due to anxiety stopping me from having any kind of life and doing any of the things I want to do, among other things.

So I guess I don't really want to think that this is it, having the option of 50 or 60 more years of feeling shitty, or offing myself to escape the shit. I haven't been diagnosed or anything but I'm pretty sure I will be when I actually go talk to someone. So if you could, get better and let me know so I don't give up.

Peace and love sister/brother

DOTHETHING_ · 3 points · Posted at 00:59:08 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

I think everybody in this thread isn't wrong in what they think here. Some people feel like they want to be dead. Other people want them around. If your life and not just how you are feeling about it is the problem there are people right here that want to help in anyway or at least make it easier for the moment. I get that this isn't something that suicidal people will want or will find useful in any sense but the offer is out there and it stands. If you're decided then there is nothing to lose in talking to someone. Help someone else understand. Maybe it's not for you but for others. Selfish? Probably maybe. It all comes down to fuck it.

A_Hairless_Trollrat · 2 points · Posted at 04:09:47 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

No dude not at all. I talked to people a lot. Imagine them as a flotation device, anchored in an ocean or misery. They help for a time, but they don't get you to shore. Only you can do that. When you feel tired, and weary, you can hold on to them. But they're the same tired lines over and over. They get you no where. They keep you afloat, that's it. If we could just talk our problems away there would be no need for medication. There would be no depression. No anxiety. No one with body issues. No one with any number of ailments, because "it's easy to talk it out."

That's not the case, not at all.

jayrandez · 1 points · Posted at 04:40:58 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Actually you are more correct than you know. Many psychologists say that the hardest thing you'll do, if you're one of the billions of us that have depression, is simply getting out of bed.

They go on to say, that normies also experience the "inertia experience", but it doesn't weigh as hard. That being said, when a non-depressive person wakes, according to EEG, and EKG readings, we DO NOT WANT TO WAKE. Waking up requires more energy than being awake, so we are genetically predispositioned to stay asleep. Something like turning on a light bulb. The light bulb blows when you turn it on. Simalarly to how people react to waking. It requires a surge of energy that your body (most of the time) will need.

There are of course outliers but, for most of the population, the theory seems to hold. Basically, you are right. The HARDEST thing that about 80% of the population will do in a day, is simply waking up. We seem to have a genetic code that keeps us asleep for as long as possible. I know not why this would benefit us on the evolutionary scale, but it is there.

Far as I can figure, sleep is there to make us confront the unknown. Even in other species we see the affects of dreams. Dogs will run/scratch in place. Cats will knead, or pounce in their dreams. These actions are definitely transferred into their movements.

The big difference is that WE...... humanity can take the lessons learned in these dreams and adapt them to our world. This, I feel, is the only reason that humans and not dolphins, or pigs, created so much. It isn't that the dolphins didn't dream of such a world. It is entirely that, we, as humans dreamed it, and our id made us build it.

But that all started with us deciding that we should not go back to sleep. Not so much get out of bed. It is the not going back to sleep (which really is preferable) that created the impetus that caused human society.

It's actually really underwhelming. Even though the cereal in Lucky Charms sucks, it makes the marshmallows more worthwhile. The reason the marshmallows taste soo good is the anticipation and work put towards them.

I forget what the cereal is called, but it's some sort of Great Value brand cereal that's a mixture of Captain Crunch and Lucky Charms marshmallows. Me and my friends named it "Pirate Booty" and it is the shit.

I grew up with a grandmother who was so frugal(i.e. poor) that she took the marshmellows out of the cereal all year long. Then at Easter and Christmas she would use all the marshmallows to make "crazy candy" which was a bunch of pretzels chocolate and cereal marshmallows all melted together.

kobibeef · 1 points · Posted at 03:59:37 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

The marshmallows were the worst part of the cereal for me. I'd pick them out to eat them first, and then use the rest of the cereal to drown out the taste.

Eat That Frog is a seriously light and weak book compared the incredible "The One Thing" which covers much of the same information in a much, much better way.

TOT was one of those very few life changing books for me. Fantastic cover to cover with excellent writing and examples and practical advice. ETF was neat but really came off like it could be the sales brochure for TOT.

We went to a bakery in a famous tourist town in Maine, and the featured item was a sticky bun that looked like it could have been a frog if you look at it from the right angle and squint a little. In front of the sweet treat was a sign that said, "If you eat a frog first thing in the morning, nothing worse will happen all day."

Same sentiment, different take on it.

wiseoldtoadwoman · 2 points · Posted at 02:58:07 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Pure sugar bombs. My local bakery also has these. The outside is fondant. The eyes are butter cream. The lily pad is a chocolate covered cookie. And the center is this gooey stuff like the (raspberry? I don't remember) cream inside a chocolate candy.

So "good" depends on your opinion of sugar bombs. It's either amazingly delicious or really gross.

GoodWilliam · 76 points · Posted at 23:12:51 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)*

Do all of it.

I think about this at work. Why should I be upset that things aren't the way I want them? What law is being broken when I am unhappy? There is nothing wrong with me suffering, it is fine.

Suddenly a large part of the suffering is gone. I can be unhappy with what is happening without being unhappy that it is happening to me.

It sounds silly. But for me personally, the notion that "I should be happy, damn these things making me uphappy!" caused a lot of cognitive dissonance while I did things that I disliked. Without that negative umbrella tainting my experience, the things I hate seem petty. Pettier than me. And I am petty. It seems pointless to pay any mind to it.

Just do all of it.

heliocopter122 · 2 points · Posted at 01:35:08 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

right there along side you Jed, by even bringing in the notion that there is something you'd rather do, there becomes an endless amount of fuel to feed your suffering, until you're constantly doing what you don't want to- and begin to dread doing such things.

GoodWilliam · 8 points · Posted at 02:10:07 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)*

Yep! Something you dislike doing could be nothing more than the-thing-you-did-before-the-next-thing-you-did.

Or....

It could be the bane of your existence. The reason you should have gone to college, or the reason that college was a waste of the best years of your life. It could be the reason you're mean when you get home from work. The reason you drink. The reason you regret everything up to and including this point in your life.

The important thing to remember is that we're sentient, self-aware beings who have the opportunity to chose what life and all the little moments mean. We shape our reality with our perception because our perception of reality is all we have.

We live in a wonderful juxtaposition of subjectivity and objectivity. We experience things that are out of our control, yet the very act of processing and understanding those experiences is, in and of itself, control.

also.... Jed?

heliocopter122 · -1 points · Posted at 04:25:11 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

love those last two lines, well said. 'Jed' is from Jed McKenna's books on life/enlightenment/etc and I always reference it when talking to people like us bc I like to use Jed's terms in talking about these things. I would also say that so many always see the fault in others when there is so much to fault in one's self. (It's remarkable that fear of death is still so prevalent that it drives individuals to constantly fight (with words now, instead of traditional, weapons) to reassure or assuage their never-healable ego). Additionally, how can people not hear the simple truths of the bible and follow them to their natural conclusion? It seems remarkable that many don't recognize that in manuscripts writ by learned men and which are adored and treasured for hundreds of years, that their truths could be anything but incredibly profound (don't value the time put into it). My thoughts on this are that those who haven't been thru enough time can't realize that there is at least a grain of truth at the bottom of these wells of knowledge.

I actually have a tattoo about this. In short: "Unhappiness does not arise because of the way things are but because of the difference between how things are and the way we think they should be."

jeffufuh · 1 points · Posted at 06:09:18 on June 2, 2016 · (Permalink)

The problem is that it's easy to think that unhappiness is -1 and happiness is +1, and at the end of the day if you are (-) you had a bad day and if you are (+) you had a good day. Believing there's some part of you that totals up your experiences and defines you is basically "ego". And there's no such thing as ego.

Basically, it's okay to be unhappy. There's nothing unnatural with doing something you don't like, being uncomfortable temporarily, etc. But if you believe that unhappiness changes some part of your existence, has an effect on the value of your life -- that's letting your ego control your reality.

Good is good, and bad is bad. Either one is okay. Both are an important part of life. But if you let the bad cancel out the good then you'll always run away from bad things and seek out good things. Obviously, that's not a peaceful way to live.

Sorry, I meant to simplify it but I got really carried away... haha. If that didn't help let me know and I'll try again, this was pretty fun to think over so thanks for that.

DevNullSoul · 1 points · Posted at 11:16:38 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

It's important to remember that your feelings aren't a result of other people's actions or your situation; your feelings are a result of your thoughts about said events or situation.

How you choose to think controls how you feel.

Someone nobody liked working with, but who did help out, just resigned at my workplace. I can think "well, shit, that's more work for me and I already didn't have time for what I had to do before" or I could think "this is a great opportunity for the new guy to step up and find a place to be helpful. Sure, it's more work for me right now, but in the long run everyone will be better off for not having to deal with that guy."

Both thoughts are true, but one leads to negative emotions and the other doesn't; it's my choice as to which I focus on.

Don't do anything. That's what I have been doing the last 6-7 years.

At first it is great. Oh, so fucking great. You can go weeks, even months without doing "anything" (as in usefull/brings income)..

At some point I spent over a month inside. As the months of doing nothing flew by the concept of doing nothing started to shift towards more nothing. "Watch TV? uh.. I have to pay attention and stuff.. "

Anyway... gradually I started doing bigger and bigger grocery purchases. 2-3 days. then a week, two weeks and so on..

Got to say though, food for 1 person for 1 months is quite a lot of food. So I stayed inside for a month. All I did was sitting or laying in my sofa, either watching TV and or sitting on my laptop and move in a triangle between the bathroom, kitchen and the livingroom. I didn't even shower.

I think I might have been a little depressed at that time.

I mean - who the fuck am I kidding - I am still relatively young and poor, so just a fucking immigrant. Anyway, I have been in Norway for a year and a half, almost, and my life here, most of this time, has been an uphill struggle. I speak tolerable Norwegian relatively smooth, I sill struggle to find a fast (meaning 'permanent/solid') contract job. My gf and I split up and I am moving to a tiny room, close to my work in Vestby. I don't know if i will have a job after summer and I have bills to pay. This stress and uncertainty are killing me. I am a nervous wreck lately. I sure can't afford to be depressed and chill out. Instead I am being depressed and very stressed. :D

[deleted] · 5 points · Posted at 02:40:15 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

At first it is great, but then you go nuts. At first it is small things. Like always ripping off the match head after you have used it.. or, never eat the first slice of bread... from then it gets just worse and worse. And I must emphasize that I didn't have a clue what so ever. Everything normal.

Anyway... I did a lot of reading back then, and as my obsession at the time was how the monetary systems work, you can imagine there was/is an abundance of reading material written by more or less credible persons or organisations. Still haven't recovered 100% from that yet. I have gone from "There are a handful people controlling everything." To "There are some crocks in the financial industry, I am inclined to believe that two or more people in the financial business cooperate on a regular basis to make money by hiding a crime."

Then came fucking forks man. Jisus. I had an.. episode with my forks. I had completely forgotten about it. I have no really good explanation as of why, I just don't exactly know what made me think that this was something "you do", .. It was just that.. I have no clue of how I got the idea, or what I was thinking.

Couple days later my mom shows up unannounced, as I haven't been seen in a couple months. The appartement is of course a horrible mess of .. trash basically.. empty food containers, dirty dishes, trash everywhere.. I had like this path on the floor for walking here and there.. I even made intersections and moved stuff around to get better traffic flow... you know.. as one does.

I've always been messy, and mom hadn't visited for a year or so, but mom didn't really freak out about the mess. The forks however. Holy hell...

30 minutes later I was sitting in an ambulance on my way to place for insane people. I stayed there for almost 4 months.

Fuck, what a place... I mean, I "got out" of there (patient lingo; ), with a pretty short sitting time. This place was a medium security facility. That means you can't escape to the outside, but you can pretty much walk around freely inside the hospital.

At first, you think this is a mistake. You don't belong among in a house full of clearly incredibly insane people, as you are clearly incredibly sane. Compared to some of the people staying there, some going 30 years strong, I was. After the first few days of "I am not insane" and therapy sessions going from talking normal about being released, to begging for it to anger and yelling. Couple weeks of that. Slowly you start to know the other patients and converse with them. You won't believe the amount of backtalkting among the patients. I don't know if this was just this hospital or it common, but god damn. Some patients knew everything that happened in the hospital. A guy, in his middle 40, in for 12 years, was obsessed with knowing what was for dinner before it was served. At the end of the week he was pretty accurate, and got most saturday and sunday dinners right, but not the order.

He had a clear view to the service entrance from his sleeping room. So every monday morning he would sit in his room, with a notebook and a pen, and scribble down as many of the ingredients he could see. He also never showered freely. They had to force shower him once a week.

Yeah.. and now I am considering going back in for a tune up.. I don't feel to breezy over here..

TL;DR: I was insane, was not insane, and think I am on the right path to insane again.

Ah yes. The NEET lifestyle. At first it feels so liberating and free. You have all the time in the world to pursue your own interests, and the internet serves a never ending number of distractions. But then you realize you can only do so much without the financials to support it. Even after cutting back, the cycle of pirated TV/Video Games can only sustain you for so long. Before you realize it even the prospect of having to go outside and the slightest amount of interaction amongst the normals of the world becomes immobilizing. At first it may have started because you just wanted to escape the real world, but soon after the constant chase after escapism continues because you want to escape living in your own head.

Preskool_dropout · 7 points · Posted at 22:57:45 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

It's so damn true! I'm always amazed at how two people can have the same experience but yet one can be happy about it and one pissed off (or another different emotion). You really do choose how you react to things. It's not easy, but you seem to know as well that it is very possible to change your perspective. Once you do that, happiness is much more attainable and it all starts to fall in place! You're happier, life is easier. People want to be around you more (better social life), you're more likely to get promoted (more money), and other things just seem to work out better and more easily. That's my experience at least. And again, obviously it doesn't correlate that directly or happen that easily, but to an extent they are all related.

"I don't"

-Abraham Lincoln

zeptimius · 1 points · Posted at 15:01:51 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

What fascinates me is that the LPT and the book seem to completely miss the point of the quote.

Recommending that someone eat an actual frog to start their day, just to make the rest of the day more palatable, is stupid advice, and obviously a joke. It's like saying, "If you stub your toe, ram a brick against your head: it'll make the pain in your toe go away."

I'd go even further and say that the quote makes fun of the kind of "life advice" that seems profound at first but becomes idiotic if you stop and think about it; that is, exactly the quasi-deep "philosophy" that the book purports to reveal.

Mimsy-Porpington · 1 points · Posted at 15:21:16 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

I agree! But with that said, the saying, in its misunderstood/metaphorical sense, is excellent advice. The way I first heard it was, imagine you have to eat a frog every day, no matter what. If you don't eat it today, you'll have to eat 2 tomorrow, and so on. So eat the damn frog first thing, that way you won't be fretting about it all day. It really helps me not to procrastinate unpleasant tasks!

zeptimius · 1 points · Posted at 19:56:11 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

imagine you have to eat a frog every day, no matter what

This is exactly why the analogy doesn't work for me. If I was in some bizarre scenario in which I had to eat a frog daily, I would spend every waking moment of my day trying to change my situation into one that didn't require amphibians in my diet, and only eat the frog if all my attempts had failed --and do so happily, knowing that I'd done all I humanly could to avoid it.

By analogy, if your life is so shitty that every day, you have to do something comparable to eating a frog, focus on changing your life, not on doing that shitty thing. Starting your day with it is giving up from the start.

Mimsy-Porpington · 1 points · Posted at 20:06:13 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

Well, some things you just can't change. There are always things you won't like. Maybe you love your job, but sometimes you get handed a task that you dislike. Maybe you hate folding laundry, but can't afford a maid. Such is life.

zeptimius · 1 points · Posted at 08:21:30 on June 2, 2016 · (Permalink)

I'm not denying that, but folding laundry is not exactly like eating a frog. The saying only makes sense if one of the following is true:

  • A minor inconvenience feels like eating a frog. In that case, stop being a sissy.
  • Something in your life is actually like eating a frog. In that case, don't resign yourself to it but fight it.

What are your biggest interests? I might be able to recommend a few.

LoraRolla · -2 points · Posted at 21:22:42 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)*

I like learning things, but I don't like melodramatic fluffpieces, or roundabout story telling. Like This American Life for example. Interesting stories, lots of filler, lots of kitsch. Painful to me.

I enjoy Video Games but I end up disagreeing with the opinions of most reviewers, or game journalists. So in that end, a talk show featuring such people just becomes a matter of rather or not you agree with them if you're going to enjoy it or not.

There's nothing I'm so into that I'd listen to an entire talk show about it, except maybe Psychology. Then a lot of stuff out there on psychology and sociology are absolute trash that are painful to listen to. Inaccurate, outright wrong, lying, promoting products.

Back when I was really into anime, I'd listen to anime podcasts where they'd sit down and interview people in the American industry like a former Tokyopop employee. To hear their misinformed opinions, obviously lack of knowledge, and the way they baby glove things (particularly ANN) was painful.

I guess they're great if you have one solid interest that you really invest a lot of time into, but I don't have any such hobby. And I hate listening to people outright misrepresent or get things wrong with no way to communicate with them.

If I had to pin down any hobbies I actually had it'd be Psychology because I was studying that for a career, Video Games and Reading but I'm not interested in the people who create those things. I'm only interested in playing games and reading books.

Edit: It may seem negative, but look at it like this. A lot of people seem to love History and Car podcasts. Now imagine for a moment, the podcast was mostly filled with people spouting things that were just not true. It would no longer be an enjoyable thing for them to listen to.

Now imagine the topics are rape, autism, crime, so forth. Things that are already polarizing, then you have people telling you that you weren't breastfed enough as a child and that's the source of all of the issues. Or people who do anime podcasts just generally don't research. The Anime News Network is basically the Fox News of anime.

Radiolab may be a good alternative to this American life. Instead of having three or four acts, they just focus on one thing and go pretty in depth. And they usually run about half an hour long. Huge variety of topics, but usually really informational without being dry.

ZergAreGMO · 3 points · Posted at 23:45:14 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

There's surely a middle ground missed in that hyperbole. Nobody likes when a topic is essentially sullied by someone being intellectually dishonest (or incompetent to the same degree). It's not the same thing as being picky or uncompromising. Honestly without trying to be a dick it's about why I don't like your comment and feel the need to reply.

Then again maybe I'm also not fun at parties.

In the case of kexp stuff, sure, but if you don't live in California and want to listen it's the only way, or if you just want to listen on your own time.

Song exploder is neat in that they feature one song per episode and have the artist step through the process of creating the piece. At the end they play the full piece of music.

For sure. Recently got my first full time stable gig, once you have had a taste of reliable hours, the idea of going back to shift juggling is horrendous. I did the bus thing for high school. Long story, but five hours on the bus each day to go learn algebra and crap sucked. I wish you luck.

Original quote from Nicolas Chamfort: "Swallow a toad in the morning and you will encounter nothing more disgusting the rest of the day."

Nietzsche wrote a great poem (in the Gay Science) playing on the concept as well:

"24 Medicine for pessimists

Nothing tastes good to you, my friend?

I'm tired of your belly-aching.

You spit, rage, slander without end;

My patience and my heart are breaking.

I have a remedy; just follow

My good advice and rest assured:

A toad is what you need to swallow,

And your dyspepsia will be cured."

Line jumpers....I hate those fuckers. Waiting for the bus for 20 minutes, empty bus comes. Person runs out of a building somewhere right to the door right in front of me, even though I was waiting....take my favorite seat. Happens more often that you would think and it is slowly killing me. But I do usually get my normal seat.....so I got that goin for me.....which is nice.

UndergroundLurker · 5 points · Posted at 20:38:57 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

Hey buddy. All the seats get you there at the same time. Do you have a smartphone? Just browse reddit the whole trip and you'll forget where you are!

qdobe · 2 points · Posted at 20:42:07 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

oh trust me my friend, I have perfected blocking everything out for the whole trip. I take the bus for a long time through some sketchy parts. I have seen some shit. Worst days are when I forget my headphones.

When it comes to the seats, I am a tall person with a bad back and there are like 4 seats that I actually fit comfortably on. If I sat on any of the other seats for a whole hour trip, my back and knees would be killing me. My back is still sore from one of my trips last week.

But smartphones have been the fucking miracle saving grace for us bus riders. If I don't want to deal with anything on the bus, I don't have to!

UndergroundLurker · 3 points · Posted at 20:46:35 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

You've never been on a crowded bus, have you? Yeah, I'd love to crochet, standing up, while I have to hold on to something else with one hand. That'd be a whole set of skills I could benefit from. Plus you have to speak outloud to learn a new language, and hear yourself speaking it. That's as frowned upon as playing your music openly.

Perhaps every piece of advice doesn't apply to every individual? I've been on plenty of buses where I had time and space to do something productive. I don't really see the motive in hanging out on an advice subreddit and then moaning about how that particular piece of advice doesn't apply to you.

I'm an electrician. When doing a job, there's always an easy part (say, terminating wires in an electrical panel), and a hard part (say, climbing around in the attic to wire ceiling-mounted smoke detectors).

When I think about what I want to accomplish during the day, I ALWAYS start with the uggliest, dirtiest, most finicky bullshit job. If it takes a little longer, no big deal. I'd rather fight and be pissed off early, then have to fight and be pissed off later, at the end of the day, when all I want to do is get the fuck out of there.

My partner and I are polar opposites when it comes with this. I just have to get it out of the way or it'll nag and nag at me, churn my stomach, and just bother me for the rest of the day until I do it. I'd rather rip off the bandaid as soon as I can so I can just have that sigh of relief and the 'it's done'. My partner will put it off and put it off and put it off until the small issue becomes a mountain and the way out of it is no longer that simple. Drives me nuts!

Learned this lesson early on. I remember playing with my Legos as a kid; I would make towns and such. My mom would ask me to clean up the pieces that I wasn't using before I continued to play. It made cleanup go a lot faster.

Some puerile say to do the easier task first to get you into what you need to do.

Doing the border task first might seem overwhelming... So you might as well get something done.

I guess this is kinda opposite off what you're saying though...

at_work919 · 1 points · Posted at 23:40:39 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

I have a different strategy: I start with easy tasks to kind of get a rhythm going before I tackle whatever it is that is the most difficult. Otherwise I find myself just banging my head against it and making no progress.

tcmaresh · 1 points · Posted at 23:41:30 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

Terrible advice, in my opinion.

Once you swallow that frog, the bitter taste will be in your mouth all day and ruin everything after it, including the good stuff. Do the easy stuff first to get momentum, pride, self-confidence and the rest of the day will go easier, including the difficult task.

And who knows, maybe by the end of the day, that difficult task will have resolved itself and you won't have to touch the frog at all.

thermite13 · 1 points · Posted at 23:41:34 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

Today I did the opposite and before I started on the hard part I realized I didn't have to do it.... But in general good advice.

bumbletowne · 1 points · Posted at 23:42:14 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

God I have tried this so many times.

It leaves me bitter and emotionally blank for the rest of the day. It's best to premeditate my day with structure so I don't burn out doing things I hate. Structure and efficiency>hard work and menial work.

arleban · 1 points · Posted at 23:50:05 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

Very cool. I recently had a discussion I had to have with an ex that I put off for a bit. Don't let the anticipation destroy you from within. Get it out of the way and in reality. It is much easier to deal with instead of letting your mind run wild.

Basically...this! Thank you for the succinct explanation.

SparkyTemper · 1 points · Posted at 23:53:13 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

And spend the whole day knowing you have a frog in your gut? No thanks. Do the easy stuff first and feel like you've accomplished things.

MrFiskIt · 1 points · Posted at 23:53:32 on May 31, 2016 · (Permalink)

This is so true. My favourite implementation is when working on cars.

Undo the hardest to reach nut first. Because it will be 10 times as hard when it's the last one and the weight of the whole part is sitting on it.

There's a Calvin & Hobbes strip that rebuts your statement succinctly, but after an hour and a half of searching, I just can't find it, and I tried very hard.

Anyway, in it, it's Sunday, and Calvin has a lot of things hanging over his head so he can't enjoy himself. Hobbes recommends knocking those things out, then just enjoying the rest of his day! Calvin decides to give it a try, and naturally, just as they finish everything and go out to play, his mother yells at him that it's bedtime.

My point is, if you waste your time doing "the thing you are least looking forward to," then you may never get around to enjoying your life.

Solid advice. I call this "eating my peas" since since I used to have boiled peas as a kid and had to eat them to leave the table. So I'd eat them first, get it over with and linger over the other delicious parts of the meal.

I did the same thing with my crusts, now that I think about it ... I may have been a weird kid.

I prefer to start everyday with simple tasks, the the hardest ones, then at the end of the day finish the fun ones. Simple tasks like setting your own bed, iron your clothes and a perfect breakfast and wash the dishes. Easy tasks that can be completed in a few minutes without any issue, if you mark each one of the firsts task as completed you'll fill more confident on being able to complete the hardest ones, like going to job, or cleaning the yard. I don't feel like coming back from work or cleaning and then return to do my bed and the dishes from the morning...

This breaks down a little at work, when the worst thing of the day may be a project meeting that your contribution has fallen flat for. Sometimes I'll encounter a time when I simply can't find some answers to our study by a certain date, and so I'll get to look forward to a shitty meeting all day.

Makes leaving work soon afterwards greaaat tho

I had an assignment which I didn't want to do, but it needed to be done. If I procrastinated I would have been dreading it all day and the quality of my work probably would've been lower than it was, so I sat down and did the work.

Once I was done I felt like I could breathe easier and everything else that day was fantastic.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 03:13:03 on June 1, 2016 · (Permalink)

My counsellor told me this on our very first session. He even wrote "eat that frog" in big letters on a piece of paper for me to take home and look at. We can put ourselves off things so easily, and they end up just not getting done, but if you just "eat that frog" and get it over with, you'll feel accomplished and that confidence boost can be enough to get you through to the next obstacle.

In high school there was a mentally challenged man about 60 years old who also happened to be a waterboy for the highschool football team. All of our waterboys were mentally challenged people. That is just our weird high school tradition. He often walked up to kids at games and told them "you should come over to my house and I'll show you my frog." No one knew just want the fuck he was talking about, but he was mentally challenged so we just let it go.

Honestly, I think most of us didn't want to think too hard about what he meant, and just what the fuck his frog was. To this day, I still don't know what he meant by "show you my frog." He died a few years back. No one ever knew what he was talking about.

We did later find out that when he was younger he was committed to a mental hospital and there were rumors of attempted sexual assaults. Suddenly, "come over and I'll show you my frog." started to make a lot of sense. I certainly don't want to think about having to shallow his frog.

But I use the "frog" to get so much other stuff done! Right now I have 102 reports to write by the end of the month. If I tell myself to start with the worst one I will never get started because it's too daunting. Instead I can procrastinate the worst ones by doing the easy ones. Then I build up some momentum and start to feel better as I cross off more and more reports on my list. I also can use some of the strategies in the east reports to help pad the difficult ones where I am not sure what to say. I also buy candy and eat a piece for each small step completed. I WILL feel ill. It WILL be worth it.

Easier said than done. I am a freelancer and the whole "do whatever you want, flexibility and make your own schedule" really just translates to procrastination and doing the bare minimum, just because no one is there to control you.

I think the best thing to do in this situation is STOP THINKING, and just do it. Time yourself, and have someone check up on you.

Cleaning my place is usually the best part of my day because all of the work I put into it, I reap the same amount of rewards. Similar to working out. This is in contrast to my job where things can fail despite my best efforts, and even when things do go right, I rarely get the accolades.

I least look forward to going to work. That is the majority of my waking day.

I tried that once, but my lab partner got mad at me.

Not original with OP. At least be honest and credit someone else's work.

Looks like you're "stealing" a book title, there.
