EDIT: That'll have to be all, folks. Thanks for the questions! You can throw more my way on Twitter.
Hiiii! I drew Brawl in the Family, a Kirby (and Smash)-centric webcomic that ran from 2008 to 2014, and created a game for the Wii U (and Steam), Tadpole Treble. I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan and a church pianist on weekends. Feel free to Ask Me Anything!
If you like the silly things I've done in the past, you might like to know that I just Kickstarted a book full of new comics in my BitF spinoff, "TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME." You can preorder it here through PayPal if you'd like!

Wow, wow, wow, I've been a huge fan of your comics since forever. Me and my sister loved reading them years ago, thank you for such amazing moments <3
I'd like to ask, like, what motivated you to start them, to start drawing and making the comics?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 67 points ยท Posted at 18:08:23 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks for the nice message! I'm glad you enjoyed the comics.
BitF had a pretty humble start, literally beginning as doodles in my notebook during college art history classes. I sketched six of them very quickly in PhotoShop on a whim and uploaded them to a couple message boards (IGN and GameFAQs) to hopefully give someone out there a confused laugh. The response was surprisingly positive, so I just kept creating them...!
Once I hit 30 or so, I decided to focus on making it a dedicated webcomic with its own site, etc. My main goal was simply to make a Nintendo-focused comic since I felt that niche hadn't really been explored much. It was a secondary goal of mine to not stray too far from Nintendo's own characterizations (give or take a Waluigi) or content, so the comic could still feel like it'd be a semi-believable extension of Nintendo's casts and worlds. This had the nice side-effect of younger users being able to enjoy it as well, as many webcomics at the time used the extra freedom of the internet to make more adult content.

As an older person, I appreciate you sticking to grounded stuff. When people try to make nintendo too mature with non-mature series, it feels meh.

Will we ever get to see the Thwomp gag that was โtoo raunchy for BitF?โ
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 72 points ยท Posted at 19:58:25 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Maybe one of these days! I'd like to put it in the upcoming book but I'd feel guilty about a single gag being more inappropriate than the rest of the book. I actually made a handful of these "Brawl out of the Family" ideas, but most of them didn't leave the sketchbook they were drawn in.
I can describe it for you, though: Mario comes up to a Thwomp that's repeatedly slamming the ground. He runs under it and reaches the other side of the room, yet the Thwomp continues to slam the ground. Mario looks puzzled, shrugs and moves onward.
The last panel is zoomed out, and shows that the Thwomp wasn't slamming into the ground, but a second, upside-down Thwomp that sat flush in the stone. She has a blushing/satisfied look on her face.
And now you know!

You just satisfied a curiosity I've had for nearly 7 years now. It's just as satisfying as I thought it would be.
As much as I'd love to see more of these rejected ideas, you're not wrong in saying it's too dirty for BitF. I totally get having reservations about putting it in the book. If you ever find another outlet to post them, though, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd read them!

A couple questions from people who said they might not be able to comment in time:
First, what's your favorite Waddle Dee in Star Allies?
Second, from my Discord buddy Courtesy:
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 32 points ยท Posted at 19:36:18 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Favorite Waddle Dee? I like the one right in the middle of that giant Waddle Dee Ball in that early stage. He's a real trooper. Well, him or the trusty bandana/spear one.
Drawing BitF was actually really good for me; having a little bit of pressure (the expectation of having updates 2-3 times a week) kept me focused on making deadlines, and it got me into the habit of drawing regularly. I was able to pretty much keep up that schedule (minus a few hiatuses) throughout the comic's run, and it's helped me focus on consistently working on other projects.
Working on a game is a whole different beast, but I still enjoyed a great deal of creative freedom with Tadpole Treble. There were several moments where I'd say to my brother, "Why not just [do this]?" where "this" could be anything from an insane Pause Menu Song that plays 1/20th of the time, to a school of piranha forming a gun that shoots themselves towards our heroine. And his response was always, "Let's put it in, it's our game!" The most difficult and tedious parts of working on a game were the bug-testing that came afterward though. That was probably the biggest change from comic-making.

Gotta be Yo-Yo. It's so punchy and versatile! I was thrilled to see it back in Star Allies.

On a side note, thank you for all youโve done. BitF was one of my favourite comics, and while I was sad you cancelled it: atleast it didnโt go through seasonal rot.
Tadpole Treble was a really fun game, and quite creative. I still find myself humming that Pause Menu Song.

What are your thoughts on the โmodernโ (post-Super Star Ultra) mainline Kirby games, individually or overall?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 39 points ยท Posted at 18:15:04 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
For the most part, I'm happy with them. Super Star is my favorite of the series, in part because of the varied movesets, so I find the new games have particularly strong gameplay when it comes to that sort of thing. The movesets have never been better, IMO, and the attention to detail with the Dream Friends is superlative.
That said, I think we might be teetering a tad on "too much of a good thing" territory. While I've enjoyed all four of the recent Kirby titles a lot, they're starting to blend together in my mind a bit as well. I think we might be due for a shake-up pretty soon since I think the Super Star type of game has been pushed about as far as it can go.

Why did adeleine become the 4th main character in bitf over other characters?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 19:10:51 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Despite not appearing in many games, I found that she fit a niche and worked well with the other characters. She was a pseudo-straight man that was also not involved in some sort of conflict, while Kirby, Dedede and Meta Knight (and even Waddle Dee to an extent) always had a bit of tension between them. Adeleine also brought out a slightly softer side to Dedede, which I liked. I don't think I initially intended for her to be a main character but after Gooey Bomb, I thought she had a fun chemistry with the others.

Hello, Matthew! I'm really happy to see you doing this AMA. I'd like to ask: How do you feel about the possibilities of new Dream Friends? Do you have any worries about the new Waluigi Book?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 25 points ยท Posted at 18:12:27 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I'm very excited about more Dream Friends, particularly if the rumors are true... (but I'll wait for confirmation with that) The implementation of the existing ones is already excellent, particularly the Sakurai-like attention to detail in Marx's moveset.
My initial concern with the Waluigi book was people growing tired of the character after a few dozen comics, but I've found a lot of fun new dimensions with him to explore to keep things fresh. The book will also contain a fair number of "intermissions" and surprises to also keep the variety going. I'm doing my best to make sure I'm happy with the content, to the point where I'm conceptualizing more strips than necessary so that I can pick my favorites to put in the book.

Which BitF strip is your favorite?
What are your thoughts on the new Kirby lore in recent games?
What characters do you want in Smash 5?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 19:01:39 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
My favorite BitF "comic" would be 400 - The History of Nintendo. A lot of difficulty surrounded that update with my health, so finally completing it was a big achievement for me. I also always relish the opportunity to mix music with BitF.
Kirby lore in recent games...well, I really enjoyed the final boss of Robobot! Otherwise, I think it's been pretty okay, but I feel a lot of the titles lately have had a one-time "floating ball"-type villain that shows up for that game and mostly disappears afterward. I'd like to see a bit more dynamism with the main cast, or maybe some permanent additions to it.
Smash has quite a roster now, so there aren't as many obvious omissions these days as there were before Brawl or Smash 4. My top picks are Dragon Quest Slime, Andy (Advance Wars), Simon Belmont, Ridley (or an evolving Metroid), Bomberman, and a new Zelda rep--Ganon, Lynel or Impa.
rendumguy ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 20:17:45 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Speaking of Smash, excluding your top picks, which would you prefer, Bandana Dee or Adeleine? In general which one do you like more?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 22:37:07 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hmm...I'd personally rather see Adeleine, but Bandana Dee has a lot more history with the series. But I think it'd be useful to have a Kirby character who's outside the Sakurai games (as much as I like them); Addy's pretty obscure though. Kind of hard to pick.
Heylookabooger ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 18:09:49 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

Unironcially, memes and jokes aside,
What is your opinion on waluigi?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 21:49:41 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I remember when Waluigi was first shown in Mario Tennis on the N64. I thought it was kind of a bizarre choice--a skinny Wario who was jealous of Luigi (a character who already didn't get much appreciation) for some reason? But as more games came out, Waluigi's personality really came into his own--mainly thanks to the crazies at Camelot who cooked up this cackling character. After learning that his name was actually pretty clever in Japanese, I got a bit of a soft spot for him, especially since it seemed like a lot of people thought he was a waste of space for a while.
It wasn't really my intention to have Waluigi act crazy in BitF; I thought most of the stuff he did was pretty much directly in-character with what we'd already seen, give or take hiding in Luigi's towel. Even the "WAAAA" was a direct result of an early Charles Martinet interview I remember reading in Nintendo Power. Apparently, he wasn't sure how to voice Waluigi initially, until he decided on saying "WAAA" a lot, and suddenly, everything became about the "WAAA!!"
All that said...I'm actually kind of indifferent towards having him in Smash, believe it or not! I can't decide if I'd rather him, Daisy, Toad or Pauline as a newcomer.

My question is, if you were to give advice to an amateur artist who didn't know where to start improving, what would you say to them?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 19:16:54 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed BitF so much.
This may sound a bit basic for advice, but draw, draw, draw. Draw, and keep an eye on what your favorite artists are doing as well! For a long time, I'd see various fan-works of characters and be both embarrassed about my own skill level, and amazed by what people were capable of, but I soon learned that it's more productive to learn what elements others are using that make their art look so good. Improvement doesn't happen overnight, unfortunately, but I guarantee that frequent drawing will give you very real, tangible results.

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 20:15:44 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! That was a really fun (if difficult) storyline to tackle.
Cocoon Academy was originally planned to be a short series of Kirby and Dedede as preschoolers, with gags like Kirby walking up in a propeller beanie, saying "I just swallowed a helicopter!" (which later became a separate BitF strip, as it turns out) Eventually, I realized that most characters in BitF didn't have an established, canonical "childhood" era, and--since they could believably be around the same age--I thought it'd be feasible to throw them all together in a Smash Bros School type setting. So I fleshed out the main ideas of the storyline and set to work. Glad you enjoyed it!

Hey, a pre-BitF fan! I'll split this into two answers: one that's my own song, and one not written by me. I like singing August Day, it's right in my tenor range and I can sing it by myself without requiring more people to fill in the other parts. For something I didn't write, I've always been impressed with Matt Furda's 600,000 Volts and Redd White and You.

Really big fan! I still go back and read Brawl in the Family every so often. It's still really good, I love your sense of humor and silliness that went into every comic. That said, I also knew you from Turnabout Musical, and I was wondering - which Ace Attorney game is your favorite?
And for a Kirby themed question, I suppose, what are your thoughts on the Star Allies final boss? If the answer is too spoiler heavy to answer then that's fine, but it's such a doozy that I really wanted to know what you thought of it.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 20:13:29 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Favorite AA game is Trials and Tribulations. I loved how so many of the cases contributed to the main storyline, and I found the game's main villain to be one of the most detestable in any game I played (that's a good thing!). The characters are fantastic in this game. I found Spirit of Justice to be great as well, though, and it may be my second choice.
Star Allies' final boss was really cool. Wait, are we referring to the main storyline boss or the boss rush mode final boss? Because I haven't done the latter. But the main game's boss had me curious as to how a fully 3D Kirby game might play.

Hey Matthew! First of all, love your work. Second: Based on your own experiences, what would you say to someone who is trying to get started on what you do? It doesn't matter if it is music, art, game making, etc.
Third: if you could make any game, comic or whatever, with no restrictions for IPs, resources or time, what would you do?
Finally: What was the hardest challenge you faced when working on your projects (BitF, Tadpole Treble or others) and how did you solved it?
Again, I love what you do and I hope everything is going fine!
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 19:45:21 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi! Thanks for loving my work. :)
Getting started can be tricky for sure. The good news is that, thanks to the internet, reaching an audience is easier than it ever has been before. Consider your passions and what sort of think YOU'D like to see that doesn't exist yet (or that exists in a fairly limited form). For me, family-friendly Nintendo-based webcomics were pretty rare and I wanted to see more of them, so I made some.
And by all means, once you decide what that is, don't stop making content! Make regular updates so that people can keep up with you and know that they'll get more from you.
If I could make ANY game...that's a tough one. I'd probably take a stab at one of Nintendo's IPs. I'd love to work on a new StarTropics. Or an insane Wario/Walugi adventure/platformer.
The hardest challenge for me was taking the first proof-of-concept demo of Tadpole Treble and making it something playable. It was way, way too hard and just an insane mess. I was pretty crushed when I initially played it. The camera was too close to Baton and everything went by crazy fast and it killed my eyes and was just impossible. We took the concept back to the drawing board, made some necessary adjustments and a far cleaner version after several months and a bit more money, then put that new version up for the Kickstarter campaign. Thankfully, it ended up working out after that really rough start.

Dumb and obscure question, can you still do the faces of evil opening cutscene by heart? Seeing you do it on YouTube inspired me to learn the same thing when I was 12 and I never forgot that. You also really helped push me into Kirby which probably one of the best decisions made.

Haha, I'm glad you were somehow inspired by that! Those cutscenes are so ingrained in my memory right now, I don't think I'd have any problem reciting them again. I still ask my wife for "a kiss...for luck!" regularly (and she sarcastically refuses, just like Zelda).

Big fan of Brawl in the Family, one of my absolute favorite webcomics. What was your biggest surprise while making it? Was there a character you didn't expect to love writing as much, or any particular punchlines or story arcs that didn't end how you anticipated?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 19:28:34 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
The biggest surprise is probably the most "memetic" of BitF's content, and that's the general reaction to Waluigi. What was initially a ridiculous April Fool's set of improv became the most long-lived running gag of the whole comic, extending so far as to even having a reference in the official Mario Kart 8 Player's Guide!
Most story arcs are planned from the beginning, although both Gooey Bomb and The Sleepover had kind of surprising turns in the middle. Gooey Bomb went from a Looney Tunes-esque caper to the start of a new friendship for Dedede, while The Sleepover changed gears midway through into a genuine fight between Dedede and Kirby.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:55:35 on July 11, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Where's the reference in the Mario Kart 8 Player's guide? Are you talking about the game manual or another document?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:29:21 on July 11, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
The physical guide devoted to MK8, not the manual itself. Under Waluigi's bio in the guide, it simply reads "Too bad. Waluigi time."
Channel_Dedede ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 18:43:22 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
It has been explicitly stated in the Kirby series that Dedede has a hidden power within him, and that his mask has a "limiter", which has only been removed once when he was under Taranza's control, however because Dedede was bound to Taranza he had the upper limits of Taranza.
Do you think that Dedede is secretly the most powerful character in the Kirby universe and he just chooses not to use it?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 20:21:10 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
This is new information to me! I'd be curious to see what Dedede's full power unleashed would be now...but I do think he has some healthy competition in Kirby himself, who's cracked Popstar in a single punch...!

With the newer Kirby games that have come out since you ended BitF, are there any characters in them that you've come to like or have interested you? Such as Taranza, Hyness, Susie, etc?

Magolor is probably my favorite of the new bunch, but I do find the more recent new characters to be a bit similar in design.

I admit that I had to look Gryll up there! I have the original Star Stacker, but this character looks kinda fun. Almost like an alternate Broom Hatter. I'd probably need to play the game in question to get a better idea of Gryll's personality though!

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 19:08:50 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I've pretty much drawn all my life. I grew up with the NES so a lot of my earliest drawings were of Mario and the gang. I graduated in Graphic Design at Southeastern Louisiana University in 2008 (a couple months after BitF began).

Thank you so much for the years of entertainment that BitF provided, it was a joy having it throughout my teenage years.
My question: Do you ever find yourself playing a game these days and still get inspiration for a joke or comic? If so, how do you scratch that itch, or do you not feel the need to?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 19:25:25 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed BitF!
I do occasionally get a comic idea from playing new games, but I still have an outlet! I do comics (and occasionally articles) for the bimonthly print mag, NF Magazine, so comics related to Labo, Tropical Freeze and Splatoon 2 end up in there! Plus, the new Waluigi book will contain 30 BitF-style comics, so I'll have plenty of options to work with.

Hey! Good to see you! I have two ?s!
Just wondering, have you played any good games recently? You talked about Persona 5 on the podcast but is there anything else youโve been doing?
We already know you are talented with Turnabout Musical, the musical comics, Tadpole Treble, and even other games. Do you do anything music-wise that is not tied to video games? I mean, other than church (unless you put out a church album? lol)
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 20:24:32 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I've been enjoying the heck out of my Switch. This year, I found that DOOM was surprisingly fun, Dragon Quest Builders had me engaged for a good couple of weeks, and I had fun multiplayer times with Kirby Star Allies. Last year's BotW and Odyssey were both a couple of my favorite Nintendo games in at least a decade. Golf Story, Stardew Valley, Steamworld Dig 2 and Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap were all really good downloadable games from last year, and I'm looking forward to Mario Tennis Aces and Octopath Traveler.
I haven't really composed much lately outside of Tadpole Treble's soundtrack (and the other games I did OSTs for). The closest thing to non-gaming musical stuff from me lately is singing a couple of classic songs in Waluigi's harmony: The Hallelujah Chorus, Billy Joel's For the Longest Time, and One Day More from Les Miserables, all of which can be seen (heard) on the BitFinity YouTube channel. WAAAAA

Thanks for taking time out of your day to do this for us! I love your comic. Though I canโt think of any questions Iโd like to ask that people havenโt already asked, so Iโll just throw a generic question out there...
Whoโs your favourite Kirby boss? (Final bosses count, too.)
And... do you still like Kirby like you did when you made BitF?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 19:14:21 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I'm glad you like the comic! My favorite Kirby boss...? Hmm. I think I'd actually go with Mr. Shine/Mr. Bright from Kirby's Adventure (a very creative concept), or the final battle from Planet Robobot for the dynamism and fanservice. That recent Kracko battle where he's a storm cloud (Robobot, I think?) was really neat too.
I do! The Kirby series is very Nintendo; pleasant, charming and pure, with a layer of depth for those that are looking for it.

It's so nice to see you doing one of these, I was a big fan of BitF back in the day!
One thing I've wondered is; why did you decide to end Brawl in the Family when you did? Was it something you'd been planning to do for awhile, or was it a more spontaneous decision?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:31:54 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi!
I knew I was going to end BitF nearly a year in advance--when I did the It's a Plunderful Life storyline in 2013, I knew it'd be the last Christmas BitF arc, so I had it planned for a while. Long story short, it was getting difficult to come up with new strips in a timely manner; I'd often sit and work for hours without coming up with an idea I was satisfied with, so my workload was getting too long. Plus, I wanted to finish my game!

Do you have any comic ideas that you wouldโve done after the release of Smash 4 that youโd like to share?
Are there any characters that you wanted to write more comics for looking back?
Lastly, I just wanted to say that your comics were so amazing to read, and Dedede remains my favorite character of the Kirby series (with Dededo being my favorite Brawl in the Family character).
Edit: Also, if Adeline ever becomes a dream friend in Star Allies, do you see yourself making a one-shot comic about the Kirby cast finally welcoming her back?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 23:19:20 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks for your nice message! I'm glad you enjoyed BitF.
With new comic ideas, I've mainly put them in NF Magazine since BitF's wrap-up! And with 30 new BitF-style strips to come up for with the Waluigi book, I definitely have an outlet for when a new idea comes to me.
I think I would've liked to do more comics about the characters from Kid Icarus (Uprising). It's such a fun cast.
If Adeleine gets confirmed, I'll at least make some new art, if not a comic!

How do you make a good comic? I make my own Kirby fan comic, but it's not very good and I don't know how to make it better.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:21:33 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
This is a pretty tricky question to answer simply! I would suggest initially drawing what you know, and what you think would be an interesting or funny idea. If you're not satisfied with the writing or the punchline of a comic, it's not a bad idea to rework it until you're happy with it. Consider what other comic artists you like are doing with their strips, and see if you can pinpoint what makes those jokes or storylines more effective.
It helps to also bounce your ideas off someone else. This can give you valuable feedback on elements like clarity and framing. Since you're already familiar with what happens in your strips, it helps to get an outside perspective to make sure the reader will know that (for instance) character A has moved over here in the frame, and character B is standing on this side in relation to them, etc. Simple changes like that can transform a confusing idea into a solid comic.

Hi, thanks! And hi to u/-Awesomezauce-!
Tips for a webcomic, hm. It's not a bad idea to bounce your ideas off a second person to make sure everything reads clearly (I quickly had to learn that just because something makes sense in your head doesn't mean it always translates to the screen the same way). For maintaining a regular audience, update regularly! When people know where and when to find new content from you, they'll be a lot more likely to start making it a part of their routine to check into your site. If you have to miss an update day or week(s), make sure you let people know when you'll be back so they don't check out permanently. Make something you'd want to read. And lastly, consider your audience and what niche you're making comics for. If people see something in your comics that they can't get elsewhere, they'll be a lot more likely to become fans. Good luck!
WAAAAA! I actually think that purple scamp has a shot in Smash this time. If he makes it in, it'd actually change a number of things in the book I'm working on...

A pretty good amount of them! Let's see...
Kirby's Pinball Land, Kirby's Dream Course, Kirby's Avalanche, Kirby Star Stacker, Kirby's Block Ball, Kirby Tilt n' Tumble, Kirby Air Ride, Kirby Mass Attack, Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, all the Smash Bros games if they count...huh. Pretty much every one of them besides Drum Dash Deluxe, Blowout Blast and Battle Royale.
Besides Smash, my favorite would be Kirby Air Ride.

Hi, I love BiTF and Tadpole Treble, thank you for all you've done! My question is, what/who is your favorite obscure Kirby enemy or character? Like, enemies that appear in only one game, or even only one level, and never again.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 20:33:05 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hmmm...I would say Adeleine, but she's been technically in a couple games. I'm trying to think of someone that really does just appear extremely sparingly. I think NOVA is pretty neat. And the RPG boss from Super Star! I'm also kind of fond of the princess of Ripple Star in K64, mainly because the false ending of that game gave me the CREEPS.

Oh wow, Matthew Taranto! Just wanted to say that I was late to the BitF party (I only found out about the comic a year before it got canceled), but the series left such an impact on me that I bought the whole trilogy of books, and still read through them regularly. I also bought and played Tadpole Treble, what a great game! ...Basically, what Iโm saying is, I love your work.
My question is simple: what are some characters you are most looking forward to in the new Smash Bros?

Hey Matt, super excited for Waluigi Time! It's the first ever Kickstarter I've backed and with good reason. Thanks for all the funnies over the years.
What was your first experience with webcomics? What really made you get into writing something like BiTF?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:26:39 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks for supporting the KS!
I remember during the 90s era of the internet, seeing little stories made with a combination of text and sprites from Final Fantasy III (SNES). I suppose this was a kind of webcomic of sorts, and I remember enjoying reading the ones that kept the cast in-character and didn't automatically go for the swearing and adult stuff. I think I wanted to subconsciously incorporate that element into BitF once I started drawing and writing it; I mainly decided to press forward with making it a full-time webcomic because the early strips got a lot of people excited, and I thought there could always be more Nintendo-based comics out there.
[deleted] ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 20:50:36 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hey ya! I love your work and I'm looking forward to our favourite purple plumber invading our comic. I have two questions for you.
1st: Was there anything about Brawl in the family you regret making/doing? Or something that you feel you could've done much better?
2nd: How 2 draw? More accurately, what's the best advice about drawing (or even making a webcomic)?I
Thank you dude!

Thanks! I'm glad you've enjoyed BitF and are gettin' ready for Waluigi.
Okay, best advice about drawing a webcomic! Well, I'd say clarity of ideas might be most important; the early BitF strips were intentionally simple and they still caught on because it was clear and interesting or funny to people. So even with a simple art style, you can attract an audience with the right ideas. Also important is keeping to a consistent schedule--and the art style will naturally improve over time and with practice, so win/win. Good luck!

This was a pleasant surprise!
Two things:
One, what's your favorite Smash game? I have the most memories with Melee, though Smash 4 is certainly the most polished (I can't pick just one!).
Second, if no one has asked this already, who's your favorite Kirby character? I have a hard time picking between Magolor and Adelieine, though Marx has caught my attention again recently.
I loved Brawl in the Family, and I look forward to your future work!
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:53:43 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed BitF.
My favorite Smash game is hard to pick, since I tend to rate games how much they added at the time of release. If I could only play a single one right now, it'd be Smash 4 due to its balanced gameplay and massive roster (and many of my favorite Smash characters are newcomers from this one). Considering the innovation factor, I'd probably go with Melee as the top pick, even though I'm actually not as big a fan of its roster or its super-quick speed.
My favorite Kirby character is the one and only Dedede! He's such a fun, versatile fellow. As far as Star Allies movesets go, though, Marx is hard to beat.

I enjoyed Star Allies, and played through the whole game with a buddy. It was a tad on the simple side, but I thought the roster of powers was the best its ever been, and a lot of sections of the game were gorgeous. I wouldn't say no to some extra DLC stages though...!
Favorite Kirby ability would be the classic Yo-Yo, and it was great to see it back in Star Allies.

If Nintendo was gonna do like a Shared Universe in it's games like Marvel, but not smash I guess (like characters from one series coming over to another) what crossover would you like to see first, I'm thinking Earthbound and Kirby, but since the mother series has ended, I'd say Pokรฉmon and Kirby

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 21:22:32 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed BitF.
The Kirby series has a lot of great music. Off the top of my head, my favorite songs would include Dream Fountain (Melee), the "regal"-style Green Greens mix from The Great Cave Offensive, Grape Garden, Butter Building and Checker Knights.
ammf3 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 19:09:24 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Bitf is my favorite fan made web comic, and Tadpole Treble was one of my favorite Wii U indie games (with a really fantastic soundtrack). Definitely one of the most original and imaginative games Iโve played over the last few years.
Have you been working on a new game sinceTTโs release? Or possibly a Switch port? Thanks for your time and keep doing what youโre doing.

How did you settle for your designs for Waluigi and Dedede in the comics?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:35:25 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Dedede sprang up from my own poor memory of what he actually looked like from the games, but then I ended up liking his bulgy eyes and pliable mouth, so I stuck with it.
Waluigi was the result of me just doing a doodling exercise in my sketch book one day, trying to make the craziest-looking version of the character possible. He was so ridiculous-looking that he became a prime pick for an April Fool's gag, especially since he hadn't showed up in the comics yet at that point. I think his design has gotten SLIGHTLY toned down since then, but not much. I still try to make his eyes and teeth as narrow and uninviting as possible.
Alex_Ctl ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 19:23:19 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
So, I REALLY enjoyed the lore-heavy comics you made! They were really interesting and I'd love if Nintendo could focus on stories like that (although it's not too likely). I'd like to thank you for making creative, fun stories and comic strips but I won't keep nagging on about it ,, just, Thank you so much! aaa
As for questions, have you ever played Kirby's Dreamland 3? I really like the animal friends and Gooey and it was so great to see them back in Allies. Do you have a favorite animal friend, if any? Mine's Nago the cat but Pitch comes a close second.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:40:05 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the more ambitious BitF comics; I had a lot of fun making them, although they were quite a bit of work.
I have played Dream Land 3, although I still need to get to the end. My favorite animal buddy from that game is probably Pitch--he was a fun new take on the bird character and controlling him remotely was memorable. I loved how Star Allies incorporated all of them into the Cleaning moveset too!

Oh boy. Hmmm...maybe Thunder Creek or Love Note (Midnight Bayou) from Tadpole Treble? I'm pretty happy with how both of those vocal songs came out. Also, Decree of the Prosecutor from Turnabout Musical.

Super Star is my favorite. Least-favorite? Hmmm...if we're talking about the mainline series, gonna have to go with Dream Land 3. Sorry, DL3 fans! I don't think any Kirby game is bad, though. It's a very consistent series.
ineffiable ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:27:46 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
A lot of people agree with that. It's strongly consistent for a series.
Is Kirby epic yarn not considered mainline? I'd expect to see that one more as a least favorite than dreamland 3.

Although BitF may be over, it is always a treat to see your new comics in print. How was it like to collaborate with other Nintendo news editors and artists in creating NF Magazine?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:33:31 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
We actually don't interact too much! We essentially have an online meeting spot where the assignments are doled out, discussed and turned in, but for the most part, everyone kind of works on their own chunks of the magazine. I'm excited to be a part of NF, though--I think the staff does fantastic work and it's something I'm proud to contribute to.

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:37:35 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Ignoring the abilities themselves, I've always thought Simirror's design was pretty slick. I'm pretty impressed with Chef Kawasaki's new role as healer though!
That said, I think the Dream Friends are particularly enticing to use. Marx is a blast, and Rick/Kine/Coo are delightful as well.
Naoyatodo ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:32:55 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Huge fan of yours. Your webcomic is one my favorites.
Ignoring leaks, what's your most wanted Dream Friend in Kirby Star Allies. This is assuming you care, but whatev.
Semi-related, but who do you expect and who do you want in the new Smash Bros.?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:42:59 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed BitF.
I've been trying not to look at leaks. Since I made Adeleine one of the main characters in BitF, I have to admit that having her back would make me thrilled. Especially having her go an adventure with Kirby, Dedede and Meta Knight!
I've mentioned my most-wanted Smash characters already, but I expect a new Zelda representative, the return of the Ice Climbers, and Spring Man from ARMS.

I kinda like the old super-fat, tiny-eyes Kirby from the GB/NES days! In fact, I'm pretty sure some of the Kirbys I drew in early BitF strips resemble Kirb...

What would you want to see in another Kirby show?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:56:43 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hmmm. I think Dedede's characterization was pretty spot-on and fun. I wouldn't mind if Kirby had slightly more dialogue, since I think he was a tad too much of a mute in the original series (although honestly, it's hard picturing his voice). More series regulars like Dark Matter would be welcome.
Gaidenbro ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:33:49 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
You thought it was...? I disagree. It made him a malicious manchild that willingly worked for the villain. Never in the entire series did he willingly work with the villain like Anime Dedede did.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:17:25 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
That's true that Dedede was more of a "bad guy" than in the games, when (outside of maybe KDL) he's usually misunderstood or possessed. Nevertheless, I liked his raucous personality.

Thanks for your post! And congrats on refining your English--I'm currently trying to learn Japanese, and it's extremely difficult to pick up a second language, so nice work. (your English is excellent in your message, by the way)
I greatly enjoyed Epic Yarn, actually. Even though the gameplay was different than most Kirby games, it felt very refreshing and looked great. I got a kick out of the piano-heavy soundtrack as well. I played through the whole game with my wife, then went back to 100% it myself.
The Captive Princess came to me when I was thinking about how Paper Mario Peach was characterized, and I wanted to do a story using that type of characterization. Since her initial roles were about sneaking around as a captive, that felt like a good jumping off point for the story. I also wanted the ending to showcase her gentle appreciation towards Mario; Peach is a very pure character and I think she's kind of underrated.
I wasn't actually the guy in charge of the porting process to Wii U. Since it could support Unity, though, the port wasn't exceptionally difficult to make, but it did take some extra time and money. A few storage issues cropped up, but we eventually worked our way around them.
Thanks for writing!

Hi Matthew! I'm a big fan of both BitF and Waluigi so I'm very excited for the new book. Was it challenging to come up with enough Waluigi-related shenanigans to fill a whole book? And if Waluigi ever got his own game, what kind of game do you imagine it would be?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:17:12 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi Dogorilla!
I was actually wondering if there was enough potential for Waluigi to fill a book as well when I initially came up with the idea. So for the next month or so, I decided to try to come up with as many comics as possible in my sketchbook. Once I broke 100 (!!), I knew the idea would work. It's helped that I've expanded Waluigi's character a bit to explore different sides of him--not too much to be out of character, but enough to give him more material to work with. The book will also include a bunch of non-comic content that I think will really help flesh it out too--fourth-wall breaking, stuff like Waluigi stepping through the index or oversleeping past the title page, that sort of thing.
I'd actually love to see a Waluigi and Wario game similar to the BitF comic "Wario & Waluigi." Essentially have them invade other Nintendo games and make a mess of things in a variety of gameplay styles. It'd be magical...

Hi! I've been a long-time fan of your comic strip Brawl in the Family and I love all the music. I've been wondering, what inspired you to make your Wii U game, Tadpole Treble? Thanks!
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 22:23:24 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi, thanks for the nice comment!
I wanted to make a fairly simple title for my first game, and the main hook of Tadpole Treble came when I was watching my dad compose in a program called Finale. As the program played back the sheet music by scrolling through it, it reminded me of auto-scrolling platformers (like world 1-4 in Super Mario Bros. 3). I thought it'd be a unique idea to have the music of the stage work as the obstacles, and that's where the concept came from.

Hi Matthew, thank you for doing this AMA. I've been a long-time fan of the comic since 2010. Thank you for giving Adeleine the spotlight she deserves!
And my question: Have you, perchance, heard of a Smash Bros webcomic called "Omega Mode"?
I don't blame you if you haven't. It was a webcomic I drew for a few years, and Brawl in the Family was a big influence in me starting it. So thank you for your inspiring work!

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:21:43 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks, glad you enjoy the stuff I do!
Some people would like to see Smash embrace non-gaming (or game-related) characters, but that's definitely the last thing I want to see. I think even the 3rd-party picks have to be done with a special sort of care.
My new comic ideas will all make their ways into the Waluigi book and future NF Magazine issues. And I've had over a dozen game ideas with my brother, but we'll have to put them on the backburner until we can find a feasible way to make more games and still get paid...!

Hey Matthew, I pledged to Waluigi Time as soon as the paypal option went up.
My question : Would you rather see the majority (like all of them except inklings and like 1~2 others) of the smash newcomers be from entirely new series (Dillon, ARMS, Pushmo, Ever Oasis, Muysterious Murasama Castle, etc...) or from series that are already represented in the current smash rosters (More of Mario, Fire Emblem, Kirby, pokemon and so forth) ?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:25:43 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi! Thanks for your support.
To answer your question, I'm definitely the kind of guy that likes to see more series representation than in-series variety with Smash. More series means generally more art variety, more music and crazier level choices. That said, I think Zelda, Metroid and DK could use a boost in reps!

I'd love to see this just EXIST, it sounds fascinating. Maybe the main hook could be a mechanic where you'd absorb your enemies' powers mid-battle to boost your own, making a swift end to the rest of the combatants. Every enemy could give you a different moveset, and you'd have to choose which ones would work best for the situation. Meta Knight and Dedede should join the party at some point.

First, I'm kind of glad that Waluigi seems more popular now than he did before BitF. But honestly, I feel a bit guilty about it because I know out there, there're some fans of Waluigi who're sick of hearing about BitF Waluigi! But I'd like to think BitF Waluigi is pretty much in-character with the real one; we just haven't seen enough of him in action yet! So how about a Waluigi (or Wario + Waluigi) game, Nintendo...?

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:37:44 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
This is a little tricky since it would actually involve some re-tooling of existing characters--give Ganondorf his own moveset and/or add Ganon, replace Sheik with Impa, make clones into costume changes. I'd love to see more series in general represented, both first-party (Advance Wars, StarTropics, ARMS, Band Bros) and a few legendary third-parties (Castlevania, Bomberman). But a lot of the things I want would be kind of nitpicky at this point--Smash 4's roster is (despite a few complaints of mine) pretty fantastic already, and there aren't many notable gaps in it.

This is super cool, I love BitF, and thanks for taking time out of your day to answer all these questions!
So first of all, what's your favorite of the main "gimmicks" (Ultra Abilities, Hypernova, Robobot Armor, Friend Hearts) of the modern Kirby games and why?
Secondly, you referenced the Kirby anime here and there over the course of BitF, but what are your thoughts on the show?
Finally, which Kirby character do you want and/or think should be in the next Smash?
Also, thank you (and our purple hero) for teaching me the harsh truth: Sandcastles are not practical. It was a tough pill to swallow, but I had to face reality. Thank you for showing me the way.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:44:54 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Haha, thanks for your message!
As for the modern gimmicks, I might pick the Robobot Armor. It was neat having new context for some abilities, particularly Mike and Jet, and I think RtDL and TD's features were a bit too level-specific, while SA was a bit too reliant on the multiplayer aspect.
I've actually only seen a handful of episodes of Right Back At Ya, but I've definitely seen worse gaming adaptations. From what I've seen, the show has a few fun laughs and the characterizations aren't bad.
As for Kirby characters in the next Smash, I'd be happy with Waddle Dee (Bandana Dee), Dark Matter or (for a long shot) Adeleine. Prior to Smash 4, I was hoping for Prince Fluff, but I think his time has passed. Waddle Dee is probably the most likely at this point.

I loved being able to interact with Nintendo fans across the world in such a unique way. I felt a big sense of camaraderie hearing about everyone's favorite games, characters and bits of history, etc.
I'm a huge fan of Smash Bros and the amount of detail that goes into it. Besides the new cast, I'm excited to see what Sakurai has planned for 1P mode...!

Will you draw any comics with the latest in Kirby meme technology?
Loved you comic a lot, you did good. The Dededoll is still an amazing plush, I wish other people had the option to buy it still. Looking forward to reading Waluigi Time once its published and delivered. Looking forward to your future works.

One of the reasons I picked Kirby as the main character of BitF was because he was so chubby and funny-looking, and a lot of the newer meme-makers seem to agree! Thanks for the nice comments! Glad you were able to snag a Dededoll too.

Looking at my emails, its hard to believe that order was 8 years ago. Does not seem like its been that long. I ordered it the week the store opened (Maybe even the day it opened?)

I've been reading BiTF since Comic 410, and trust me, it's surreal seeing how you moved up from just making a webcomic for fun to ending up actually making a game for the company you've adored since childhood. Anyways...
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:50:15 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
The transition was pretty surreal for me too! Although I'd still love to work DIRECTLY at Nintendo... 1. Ooh, that's interesting to think about. With Star Allies piling on a lot of great nostalgia, I think a Yarn moveset would be a lot of fun. It'd essentially be an extended Kirby's Epic Yarn nod, with a Yarn Kirby being able to wrap enemies in yarn balls, zoom around as the yarn car, stomp as the yarn weight, and use the yarn tether to swing about stages. 2. I think it would've been fun to put a few more Kirby characters in from time to time, like Marx, Magolor and Taranza. I was a tad concerned if I went too obscure, it'd alienate readers who were reading for other series though. 3. Wow, 1000 comics. Well, I had a pattern going for most of the comic where every 100 strips would be a song/video, and every 200 would be an original song written and sung by me. 1000 would've probably been a song, and it would've been super-ambitious and exhausting...!

Hello, Mr. Taranto! It's very nice to be able to contact you like this! I've been a fan of Brawl in the Family for a while now, and honestly it's the only gaming-themed webcomic I've ever really loved. Others have been funny once in a while, but BitF is the one I always consistently liked. I think it's because it always seems really sincere and typically very positive, and your parodies of the weird things in video games never seem mean-spirited or mocking. You try to typically keep characters in-character, which is something a lot of game webcomic writers seem to fail to do, and you've made your comic accessible to all ages by avoiding 'mature content' (immature content?). I'm really quite impressed with BitF in general.
I still have yet to investigate (hee hee) Turnabout Musical, but I have high hopes for it given the work of yours that I've already seen. I have a few questions for you, as well as my own opinions on some of them. Apologies if I overwhelm you with text!
-How is your family doing? I remember you had some of them draw BitF comics once, they seem like pretty fun people. (Also, don't you have a kid now?) Sorry, that one isn't video-game-related.
-Who's your favorite Kirby boss/villain? I tend to be rather vocal about my love for the weird manipulative antagonists like Marx and Magolor, so I was wondering about your own character preferences.
-I remember you've said that you had a lot of fun playing Kid Icarus: Uprising! So I was wondering what your favorite weapons are to use, and why? I really like palms and orbitars, as I like to be agile and stay at mid- to long-range. The Viridi Palm is probably my favorite overall.
-You seem to like Fire Emblem as well, so I have a couple of questions related to that series too. First of all, did you play Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, and if so, what did you think of it? Second of all, what would you like to see in the next main Fire Emblem game?
-If you could visit any one location in Super Mario Odyssey, which one would it be? I honestly love New Donk City, even though it's probably the most similar to what we have in reality. It just seems like a really fun place where you could see and do a lot of things!
-Do you prefer old-school Legend of Zelda dungeons or the mini-dungeon puzzles of Breath of the Wild? I actually like the shrine puzzle system better, but I'm still glad they included more traditional dungeons with the Divine Beasts. (And, as someone who can fly an actual airplane, albeit with a co-pilot, I think Vah Medoh is the coolest thing.)
-Do you have any plans to bring Tadpole Treble to the Switch? I missed out on the Wii U due to my academic schedule.
-Which BitF character do you think is the most like you?
Thank you in advance for answering one/some/all (pick an option, haha) of my questions, and thank you very much for doing this AMA! I greatly appreciate the opportunity to ask you questions about yourself, your work, and some of my favorite video game series! Have an excellent day/evening, and best regards!
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:04:25 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi! Thanks for the kind words about BitF. It was definitely a goal of mine to make sure it was mostly positive, silly fun from the beginning, without going too far with the characters. I was surprised to see so many people appreciate that aspect of it though! So thanks. One of the challenges I'm dealing with right now with the Waluigi book is in not having the tone of it be too cynical, despite Waluigi himself being a pretty unpleasant fellow. It will be similarly appropriate for just about everyone though.
Turnabout Musical was a big collaborative effort; I ended up writing around a dozen songs, but we had a bunch of big AA fans all handling different aspects of it; script ideas, voicing characters (I was Phoenix), and writing other songs.
Family is doing fine! I actually have two kids now, and all the immediate family members of mine who did the guest comics are doing well too. Thanks for asking!
My favorite Kirby boss, from a gameplay perspective, would probably be either Mr. Shine/Mr. Bright, or Planet Robobot's final boss. I've gained a newfound appreciation for Marx after Star Allies because his moves are fun and he's a real psychopath! My favorite villain in the series, if he counts as a villain, would be Dedede. He's such a fun character that can fit into a variety of roles.
I like Orbitars! I tend to not do too many melee attacks, so I find them very effective and easy to use at mid/long range. I'm not great at Together mode, but I've been chiseling away at the Treasure Hunts (and specifically Solo mode) ever since I got it. I have about 10 squares left total, including having to get 9.0 on two more stages. So I've been fusing for defense more lately, and my current go-to weapon for that is an Overall Defense+8 Aquarius Blade with five stars in ranged. I think Viridi Palm is Sakurai's favorite!
I do like Fire Emblem, but I never got the chance to play Shadows of Valentia! I have been enjoying Fire Emblem Warriors on the Switch though, and am eager to see what IS is working on for FE Switch. I'm not sure what additions to the series would be most beneficial at this point, to be honest...maybe an easier way to streamline all the equipment/item management? I feel like I spend more time in the pre-battle setup screen than on the battlefield itself!
Odyssey has some great environments. I'd probably pick either New Donk City or Bowser Kingdom. Both of them have some fantastic atmosphere. And those pokey little birds are funny!
BotW blew me away overall, but I did miss the older dungeon design a bit. Nevertheless, I managed to sniff out all 120 of the shrines, and I did enjoy their unique puzzles. I actually prefer BotW's style of puzzle-solving (using the physics of the game engine) but I do miss those giant labyrinthine works of art from the past. I'd love to see a mix in a future Zelda.
We're looking into it but can't commit at the moment!
Most like me? Probably Adeleine or Pit.
Thanks for your questions! Have a good one!

How did you market your comic?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:54:39 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Social media hadn't really exploded in 2008, so I had a pretty simple strategy--after getting BitF's site online, I posted on a few message boards that I was already a part of, and sent out a few emails. That was pretty much it! It caught on quickly thanks to others spreading the word and/or making news articles about it. And every few months, when a comic about a current game got news about it, I'd catch a new wave of readers.
Admittedly, I think I was really, really lucky regarding this point. I barely marketed the comic at all, which is pretty unusual.

DirtyDan413 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:44:30 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Matthew! I've been dying to ask you this question for years. Back when BitF was around I bought the Dededoll, World's Greatest Hero mug, and World History in Four Kirbies shirt (that I still use as pajamas haha) bundle. I have always wondered what the "World History in Four Kirbies" was a reference to, if it's even a reference at all. If you don't remember, you drew Yoshi Kirby, Donkey Kong Kirby, Mario Kirby, and Samus Kirby all walking in a line. Please satisfy my years of curiosity!
Secondly, have you played all the Kirby games? If not, which ones have/haven't you played?
Thirdly, what was your reaction when you were reading the letter Reggie sent all those years back? The one where he made it seem like you were going to be sued or taken down for using Nintendo characters in "gags like pee jokes" but in the end he said "keep up the good work!" I'd imagine your relief was immeasurable.
Fourthly, if you could direct a Kirby game with the entire HAL staff, what kind of game would you make?
And finally, if you had 5 minutes alone with Kumazaki Shimya and Sakurai, what would you say to them (assuming you could all understand each other perfectly)
I understand you're probably busy so you don't have to answer all my questions if you don't want to (there's more I want to ask but I'll leave it at these lol), but please at least answer the question about the World History in Four Kirbies haha. Thanks so much for doing this AMA and for making BitF!
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:56:49 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Hi DirtyDan! Thanks for buying all my stuff. :)
The World History shirt is a loose parody of a standard image regarding the design of homo sapiens (one quick search brought up this example: http://www.planet-science.com/categories/over-11s/natural-world/2012/03/how-did-we-become-human.aspx) that shows apes gradually evolving into human. I thought it'd be kind of fun to mix in various Kirby hats with that concept; it essentially reads: DINOSAURS (Yoshi Kirby) then APES/CAVEMEN (DK Kirby) then MAN (Mario Kirby) then ROBOTS (Samus Kirby). Since dinos and robots aren't considered part of the evolutionary cycle, I just made it "WORLD HISTORY" instead of evolution. Hope that clears it up!
I've played almost all of the Kirby games. I haven't played Squeak Squad, Drum Dash Deluxe, Blowout Blast or Battle Royale, but I've played the rest of the US-released ones.
Assuming you're talking about what I think you are, I'm afraid I have to reveal the illusion here--Reggie never wrote me a letter! That was an April Fool's gag made to look official until it's revealed at the end that "Waluigi" was the one that wrote it (he hates BitF, after all). http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/comic/waluigipaper/
I actually like that earlier suggestion about a Kirby RPG. I'd take a stab at that! It could really flesh out the world of Kirby and pals. Failing that, I'm curious how a 3D adventure could work...
Not the craziest answer here, but I think I'd just excitedly thank them for all their hard work repeatedly. ...And then beg for Ridley in Smash.
DirtyDan413 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 01:12:33 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Haha, I had no idea the Reggie letter was April Fool's this whole time.
Thank you for finally putting my mind at rest about the shirt. I had my suspicions thats what it was but I'm glad I finally have a confirmation.

Thanks! Long story short, it began as doodles I uploaded that people enjoyed a lot more than expected. After a couple dozen comics, I committed to making it a full-time thing. I basically wanted to make it into a Nintendo-centric, (mostly) in-character comic that didn't get too adult.

Hey Matt! I know this AMA was done 30 days ago so I understand it does not get more attention, but I just wanted to tell you that I really loved BitF; quite a lot!
I pledged on your first and second kickstarter for the comics ( the second to get the 2 / 3 BitF books I was missing), while living in Argentina, having a very expensive Peso-to-dollar ratio and quite a few customs problems for importing things.
Even so, the book (and King Dedede plushie!) arrived. I could not be more happy! This was the first Kickstarter project I backed... I guess there is like a invisible signature on these things that made them extremely special, like if they were handmade for one self.
My first international order, on the first webcomic I fell in love with, seems fair!
Anyway, I had no actual questions, just make use of the space to tell you that I really enjoyed your work, and I hope you are having a great time with your family.
Cheers from Argentina!

kirby72 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 13:30:23 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Would you like Kirby to have, a new era? Kirby finally developes because he starts growing adult and get 3D games with more character development, villains that you encounter more than once (stop the tendency if not meeting and interacting actively with the villain until the very end),more serious things and overpowered beings and enemies related not only to the universe, but to the whole multiverse, even higher dimensional planes? KSA seems a good transition to it since we got that godly final boss, and the main cast would have to become stronger. Basically, a gigantic change, im sure Kirby should give that step already.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:04:15 on May 30, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
A little more emphasis on lore and some high stakes would be welcome, but I don't think Kirby necessarily needs to get more mature. I like the splashes of darkness near the end of most of the games, but I also think the colorful cuteness of the rest of the games works well. I would love to see a Kirby game try its hand at a 3D adventure though! And I wouldn't say no to an RPG either...

What's the best way to motivate oneself to work at a good pace when drawing? As someone who wants to do some webcomic-y stuff of my own, I find that I'm constantly struggling with finding time to draw.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:21:54 on May 29, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
This is a good question. Three things really help me:
The first is minimizing distractions. Leisure time is all well and good, but I want to have QUALITY leisure time, dang it! So for instance, when I find myself doing something for hours on end that I don't really enjoy, I consider cutting that out of my free time. This was part of the reason I stopped going on Facebook, for instance. I'd rather spend that free time, like, playing games or something. And some games are simply more of a timesink than fun, so same thing applies there.
The second thing is by making work as enjoyable as possible. This actually works really well with making art, because not only is art typically inherently fun, but you can listen to fun stuff while doing it. I tend to put on entire seasons of TV shows on Netflix or DVDs or whatever and just draw as they go on. The show helps keep my mind busy when I'm doing the work, and it also makes me more likely to work when I get invested and want to see more episodes. It's a sort of multitasking that ends up making the work portion of things more enjoyable.
If all else fails, make an hourly schedule. If you're anything like me, this will help you minimize whittling away the hours and will keep you on target. Don't overdo it--set aside chunks for breaks--but adhere to the schedule when you can and you'll soon find yourself in the habit of working each day during those hours. Good luck!
