I do not know anything about the Japanese language, but in the quick research I did to reply to you, MoMโs acronym in rลmaji (Japanese spelt in latin based characters) is still MoM in. VGM123 ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 18:07:36 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Pretty much.
Donald could have at least provided a reason for not letting Riku come, especially since Sora asked him for one. I wonder how Donald would have responded if King Mickey had asked him if he could come along, too.
He'd had probably listened if King Mickey asked. Donald didn't even want to land in Tarzan's world (who could blame him) to look for Sora's friends, KH1 Donald wanted to follow the King's orders and was dickish to any interference.
VGM123 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:32:12 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Just what you'd expect from someone like him. Ugh.
Because the gummi ship only had three bedrooms (not including jiminyโs little cubby hole), and it would have meant that Donald (being the next smallest one of the group) would have had to find a cubby hole to sleep in himself since he clearly didnโt want to share rooms with Goofy
Sora's the bigger idiot becuase he's known Riku all his life and decides to tag along with complete strangers instead. All Sora had to do was say either Riku goes or he doesn't.
To me KH1 was always "you are a kid with a metal baseball bat and you go on a mission with Donald Duck and Goofy to beat the ever living hell out of all the Disney villains who traumatized you as a small child." The rest was just window dressing.
BirbitUp ยท 100 points ยท Posted at 15:56:14 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)*
Tangentially related, but dang am I bummed that we spend less and less time fighting Disney villains as the series approaches its second decade.
My biggest disappointment with KH3 is how we fight like 3 Disney bosses and approximately 500 "giant heartless" bosses.
Mini rant incoming:
Where was my Randal fight?
Why'd they cut out Eugene's accomplices? They would have been great mini-bosses.
No Zurg in Toy Story. He is literally perfect as a mini boss.
My love of the franchise was the childish glee of getting to battle Disney villains, but KH3 was almost begrudgingly including Disney worlds to pad time until they rushed to finish the anime plot in the last 2 hours of the game.
Edit: and continuing my rant: why was Sora and company kicked out of the plot of half the Disney worlds. I'm still fascinated that you spend 90% of the Pirates of the Caribbean world off doing random time killing and occasionally popping in after a movie scene happened to have no impact kn anything. Sora literally meets Davy Jones 3 seconds before the boss fight starts.
It really feels like Disney cracked down super hard on who we were able to bludgeon this time around.
Would have liked to fight Gothel before she turned into a giant Heartless, or something...
BirbitUp ยท 52 points ยท Posted at 16:14:19 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)*
That's really what it feels like.
It's as if they didn't want to allow Sora to actually battle any Disneyโข characters except for begrudgingly allowing characters like Davy Jones in a fight, but only if he doesn't use a sword for some reason.
KH3 definitely felt a lot more sanitized and Disneyโข, while those first two (mainline) games felt a lot more silly and let Square Enix have more creative control.
He either bitch slapped you with his claw hand or called in kraken tentacles.
It was one of those Kingdom Hearts battles that feels more like you're constantly hitting a training dummy that occasionally hits back, instead of an actual character.
Lol yeah i just comboed him to death with the ice claws and blades literally nothing stopped me from putting a smack down on not Bill Nighy. At least he had wordsunlike Phil... Could they not get not Danny Devito in this time
Somewhere in an interview Nomura let everyone know that for KH2 the Disney Execs kind of showed up, oked the game, and left without much input. So you are, more or less, very correct. Because of KHโs hype over time they finallt went โok wait what happened? Yeah no ya canโt do that??!!โ
mr_sven ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 16:33:34 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
And people here are just.. fine with it.
They insist KH can exist without Disney or Final Fantasy because their original characters are enough. You take them away, we just have a different FF game with a name slapped on it.
Disney is probably largely to blame for its control issues, and Square, I think, isn't trying hard enough to push for them; zero idea about why so few FF characters are around.
How can you cut out Final Fantasy and Disney, and still think that the series would survive?
The people who I grew up with who also played Kingdom Hearts, enjoyed the series for how weird and silly the combination of Disney, Final Fantasy, and anime was.
It would just be weird characters like Axel, Riku, Organization 13 or whatever, which really only works in tandem with the Disney / FF stuff.
TLDR: the franchise is only loved because of how weird the combo of Disney, FF, and anime is. Make the entire thing only about Sora and original worlds, and you've completely lost me.
Fwahm ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 17:29:10 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
They'd lose you, but it's undeniable that there is a large section of the fanbase that is mostly here for the KH original content by this point, as evidenced by all the discussions where Disney worlds are referred to as unnecessary filler for gameplay purposes and all the comments from people who dislike the Disney sections.
The series is incredibly popular, and while removing the FF and Disney aspects would alienate a non-insignificant portion of the fanbase, it wouldn't even come close to killing the franchise.
It sold fine, but I feel like the quality of KH3 will be revealed on the next game. Personally I found KH3 to be a piece of shit. Maybe nostalgia is kicking in a bit, but I thought Kingdom Hearts was a nearly perfect game, and I thought Kingdom Hearts 2 IS a perfect game. And KH3 just pales in comparison. A rushed shit sandwich, but honestly felt like they backed themselves into their own corner. Higher expectations for the next game big time
Freaking yes! I just beat KH3 and am now playing through the rest of the series again now that itโs on game pass. KH1 is so different in terms of the Disney ratio, and I am sad to see that going away as the series goes on. I suppose the flesh boat in space final boss should have been an indication of where it was headed.
I'm not like butthurt over KH3, but it kind of cemented in my mind that I'm done with the series.
I was kind of begrudgingly playing through the filler games leading up to KH3, but to TLDR my feelings:
Plays dream drop 4692 days recoded 2.8 or whatever
"Well dang this game also doesn't do a lot of stuff I liked in KH1 and 2, but oh boy I can't wait for KH3 when they get back on track with the full Disney worlds, party members, and general feel"
plays KH3
"Oh... that just felt like a big budget spin off game... well. I'm done."
Youโre not alone. A lot of us have felt the same way, this sub just lends itself to a circlejerk sometimes. I miss when fighting the bad guys felt like it meant something, whether good (fighting Ansem SoD) or bad/sad (fighting Xemnas). KH3? I fought the baddest dude of them all, the one whose final fight has been building since the first game, and I didnโt feel much of anything. I felt more watching the days trio reunite :/
You're so right. Ansem's main draw was that he was the archetypal cartoonishly evil villain of KH1's story, with Billy Zane's voicework helping to ham him up beyond what the (admittedly meager) dialogue allowed. But the story expectations for a kid's game are low, and Maleficent helped round out the bad guys, so that worked okay. The Ansem Reports there helped round him out as this formerly good and wise king who fell to the darkness he studied, and even though so much of that was retconned/changed later on, Ansem SoD still fulfilled an important role as the foil to Riku and helped him find himself again after what he'd done.
Xemnas was interestingly developed in vanilla KH2, and after what we saw of CoM beforehand it made him into this morally grey, yet sympathetic, villain who in turn helped accomplish the same for all of Organization 13--a group of not-people who acted too much like people to feel like defeating them was an acceptable thing to do (despite what the game said). And seeing Sora fight them with glee did a fantastic job of developing the darker parts of his character too, especially with knowing that all the Organization 13 wanted in the end was to be human again. (KH2FM's changes didn't do much to affect this plot, thankfully, but I strongly believe it was the games after KH2 and Days where the retcons and changes were just unnecessary and did more to hurt than help)
But Xehanort? He's just...meh. He did some very intense stuff, like setting up Terra to kill Eraqus, and practically killing Ven in the beginning, and turning out to be the one behind every villain in the series so far, but all of those things were set up and executed in such a way that felt like they had very little meaning and impact whatsoever. Leonard Nimoy (RIP) did what he could with the voicework, but the rest of BBS is just bad. Lackluster story with even worse execution, terrible voicework from two of the main trio. And a plot that upended and tore holes in every installment before it. DDD's plot was so abysmally executed that we're distracted from trying to figure out WTF is going on instead of feeling any emotional stake in the plot, so Xehanort isn't developed any better there, and Dark Road is...well, it's a mobile game.
I was on this sub around release on a different account and definitely saw the mini civil war that sparked. I only wondered in here today because this is a new account that I have fully customized yet.
I think what made me so disappointed or annoyed with KH3 was just how this was built up as the end of the saga. We have been playing this series since 2001, watched it exist as we grew up and were finally promised a finale akin to Avengers Engame.
To continue the Marvel comparison: we then walked into a "Thor: The Dark World" level of product with a "the adventure continues" ending that is kind of a slap in the face. It was like if Endgame ended with no resolution at all, then we ended with a stinger for Iron Man 4. Many fans would like that, but some of us wanted the ending we were promised.
Fwahm ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 17:26:36 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
I mean, it was the end of the saga, specifically the Xehanort saga. It was never advertised as the end of Kingdom Hearts in general, or of the arcs of characters other than the main villain and his personal schemes up until now.
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 18:11:37 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
KH3 didn't feel like the end of the saga. even if it wasn't the final game it still should have ended with a sense of accomplishment and finality.
Fwahm ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:19:46 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Eh. It felt like it had in terms of Xehanort and his myriad schemes, at least to me.
Bespok3 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 22:08:21 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
What really got me in that regard is that Olympus mostly nailed it right out of the gate. It worked as a tutorial and we felt like we were actually part of the movie events, bar weird things like Phil's lack of dialogue (though understandable.) Journeying through Thebes and up the mountain, facing the Titans and avoiding another Hades rehash but keeping him very much in the picture, it was all perfect.
The Toy Box came along and wasn't movie based, but was still pretty good. Should have had a little more time with the cast at Andy's house maybe, but the biggest detriment to that world was the lack of Zurg as a boss. Even a heartless Zurg would have been great, instead we just got a spaceship.
Then Corona was cool, but the biggest moments of the film are glossed over, the villains tavern would have been a great set piece, and we got a giant tree and a chariot as the bosses, big missed opportunities. This continued in Monstropolis, cool but lots of missed opportunity.
Then Frozen happened, and it was all way way downhill from there.
I might because there was two very bigger projects was working at the time with KH3. Also Nomura was pissed with his bosses as well. Just saying it not entirely Disney fault
I think KH3 issues exist because is that it was released between FF15 and FF7 Remake. You tell which games got the most money out into and which one got the short end of the stick.
That's exactly how I felt after having finished KH3 two or so times, not to saying it in a hateful or negative attitude sort of way when I say this of course, but it kind of felt like it was one of the portable titles from the series, at least in terms of it's length. Like how if you were to play BBS on ReMix and feel like "Well, that game felt kinda short... oh wait, it was on a portable system before, forgot to think of that", that sort of feeling came out of KH3 for me for some odd reason.
PotC placement was weird. It was a great world, but it should been the halfway point of the game. Have fun and explore, not the second last level. No, it didn't relate to the plot of the movie, but it was still fun. If other worlds did and this was the only one that didn't we wouldn't be complaining too much about it
I agree and feel the same, but for final fantasy. We got pretty much nothing outside of a handful of charactors, almost all of which didnt exist in the 3rd game
Said a thousand times before, but why did they completely cut out the Hollow Bastion gang?
Leon and company are pretty much main cast, but they aren't even mentioned in 3.
I'm vaguely aware they are mentioned/ show up in the DLC, but fuck off with requiring me to spend $40 to get an ending to your story.
I loved Kingdom Hearts, but I'm not going to spend over $100 to sorta-not-really get a conclusion to the saga (and not even that really. It's not an end to the saga, it's just another installment that ends with Sora getting separated again or whatever) /rant
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 17:29:19 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
The apprentices and Hollow Bastion gang shouldโve been friends. I donโt know about how she was in FF7, but I feel like Kh Aerith wouldโve been great friends with Ienzo.
Kingdom Hearts a game about Hailey Joel Osment going on a whacky adventure with Donald Duck and Goofy to stop literal darkness while finding edgelord Pretty boy, Mystery Girl, and Mickey Mouse all while being stalked by Billy Zane late into the adventure while Disney Villians fail to stop the locksmith. Thats my sum up of KH1. And you bet i loved every second of it
Half the appeal of the first game to me is the simple fairy tale vibe of the story. I have a fondness of the mess it later became, but the first story was very Disney.
Imo KH1 has yhe best story of all of them. It's kind of simple but it's done in such a way as to feel like a true merge of Disney and Square. Other KH games no longer feel Disney, just Square Enix games with Disney characters here and there. I think the first one is the one that truly had a good balance.
I miss the simple and clean story from the first game. In fact, everything up until kh2, and BBS to an extent is acceptable. At least it still makes sense.
KH1 and Chain of Memories laid a really cool framework that KH2 just shat on by starting the whole two-dozen-xehanorts thing. I have watched several hours of "KH plot explained" videos but I still don't really get it.
Yeah but WHICH of the 58 Xehanorts is doin it, and which version of Sora's/Riku's/Roxas's/Kairi's/any-combination-thereof's character design are we using, are we in a simulation this time, etc etc
in any case, the reason he looks like Xehanort was apparently because he drew off of Xehanort's power to kidnap Roxas (even though he got rid of Xehanort's influence in CoM?)
There was only like 2 Xehanorts (and the original Xehanort) as of KH2, it wasn't that complicated
until BBS pulled the "actually the original Xehanort we knew was actually a keyblade wielder who was possessed by another Xehanort, who happened to come from Destiny Islands for whatever reason" thing

Ragnvaldr ยท 64 points ยท Posted at 16:08:25 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
It really feels like Disney cracked down super hard on who we were able to bludgeon this time around.
Would have liked to fight Gothel before she turned into a giant Heartless, or something...
BirbitUp ยท 52 points ยท Posted at 16:14:19 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)*
That's really what it feels like.
It's as if they didn't want to allow Sora to actually battle any Disneyโข characters except for begrudgingly allowing characters like Davy Jones in a fight, but only if he doesn't use a sword for some reason.
KH3 definitely felt a lot more sanitized and Disneyโข, while those first two (mainline) games felt a lot more silly and let Square Enix have more creative control.

mr_sven ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 16:33:34 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
And people here are just.. fine with it.
They insist KH can exist without Disney or Final Fantasy because their original characters are enough. You take them away, we just have a different FF game with a name slapped on it.
Disney is probably largely to blame for its control issues, and Square, I think, isn't trying hard enough to push for them; zero idea about why so few FF characters are around.
BirbitUp ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 16:40:14 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

FatGuyTouchdown ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 06:55:36 on July 21, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not like butthurt over KH3, but it kind of cemented in my mind that I'm done with the series.
I was kind of begrudgingly playing through the filler games leading up to KH3, but to TLDR my feelings:

"Well dang this game also doesn't do a lot of stuff I liked in KH1 and 2, but oh boy I can't wait for KH3 when they get back on track with the full Disney worlds, party members, and general feel"
plays KH3
"Oh... that just felt like a big budget spin off game... well. I'm done."
fuckincaillou ยท 25 points ยท Posted at 16:43:10 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
RovingRaft ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 18:45:14 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
imo it feels a lot like Master Xehanort as a character was never as interesting as Ansem or Xemnas (mostly Xemnas)
fuckincaillou ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 21:00:23 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
BirbitUp ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:49:21 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

Eliwats17 ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 16:22:25 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
I might because there was two very bigger projects was working at the time with KH3. Also Nomura was pissed with his bosses as well. Just saying it not entirely Disney fault
BirbitUp ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 16:26:33 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Definitely not laying this at the feet at Disney alone, but it really just felt so empty and bland compared to something like KH1 or 2.
To make it a single sentence: KH3 felt like a filler hand held game, except on a big budget console release
Eliwats17 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 16:30:22 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
I think KH3 issues exist because is that it was released between FF15 and FF7 Remake. You tell which games got the most money out into and which one got the short end of the stick.
BirbitUp ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:34:07 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Which just makes me bummed because we had like almost 15 years of waiting before KH3 and Disney owns about a third of the planet.
They had the time and resources, so I don't really feel sympathy for a rushed development when KH2 came out in 2005.
DuskTheMercenary ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:09:12 on July 21, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
That's exactly how I felt after having finished KH3 two or so times, not to saying it in a hateful or negative attitude sort of way when I say this of course, but it kind of felt like it was one of the portable titles from the series, at least in terms of it's length. Like how if you were to play BBS on ReMix and feel like "Well, that game felt kinda short... oh wait, it was on a portable system before, forgot to think of that", that sort of feeling came out of KH3 for me for some odd reason.
myaltaccount333 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:31:38 on July 21, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
PotC placement was weird. It was a great world, but it should been the halfway point of the game. Have fun and explore, not the second last level. No, it didn't relate to the plot of the movie, but it was still fun. If other worlds did and this was the only one that didn't we wouldn't be complaining too much about it
Seebass616 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:29:02 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

Leon and company are pretty much main cast, but they aren't even mentioned in 3.
I'm vaguely aware they are mentioned/ show up in the DLC, but fuck off with requiring me to spend $40 to get an ending to your story.
I loved Kingdom Hearts, but I'm not going to spend over $100 to sorta-not-really get a conclusion to the saga (and not even that really. It's not an end to the saga, it's just another installment that ends with Sora getting separated again or whatever) /rant

Imo KH1 has yhe best story of all of them. It's kind of simple but it's done in such a way as to feel like a true merge of Disney and Square. Other KH games no longer feel Disney, just Square Enix games with Disney characters here and there. I think the first one is the one that truly had a good balance.

yeah, KH2 was really simple compared to how it is now

"you promise the kids simple and clean" "but instead they got complex and confusing!"

Technically that was true but maleficent wanted riku to be evil cause well he thought that was the only way to bring kairi back

KH1 and Chain of Memories laid a really cool framework that KH2 just shat on by starting the whole two-dozen-xehanorts thing. I have watched several hours of "KH plot explained" videos but I still don't really get it.
Ilikefuta2222 ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 16:26:08 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Xehanort makes convoluted plans to get kingdom hearts. That's it. That's the plot.
allison_gross ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:32:37 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah but WHICH of the 58 Xehanorts is doin it, and which version of Sora's/Riku's/Roxas's/Kairi's/any-combination-thereof's character design are we using, are we in a simulation this time, etc etc

BBS: big man himself. 1: his heartless. 2: his nobody. 3: big man himself again, and all the nobodies he put part of his essence in.

And we still havnt actually seen kingdom hearts yet
allison_gross ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:40:02 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Isn't RikuXehanort also a thing?
Ilikefuta2222 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:42:26 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
When?
allison_gross ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:57:16 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Riku is strongly associated with and takes the form of fake Ansem https://kingdomhearts.fandom.com/wiki/Ansem,_Seeker_of_Darkness
https://kingdomhearts.fandom.com/wiki/Riku-Ansem
Looking up this information has given me even more questions than I had before.
Ilikefuta2222 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:21:36 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
SOD is a heartless. He invaded riku and stayed in his heart. That's the way I see it.
RovingRaft ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:52:39 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
That's just Xehanort's Heartless possessing Riku
which he did in KH
in any case, the reason he looks like Xehanort was apparently because he drew off of Xehanort's power to kidnap Roxas (even though he got rid of Xehanort's influence in CoM?)
RovingRaft ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:50:57 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
There was only like 2 Xehanorts (and the original Xehanort) as of KH2, it wasn't that complicated
until BBS pulled the "actually the original Xehanort we knew was actually a keyblade wielder who was possessed by another Xehanort, who happened to come from Destiny Islands for whatever reason" thing
allison_gross ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:08:03 on July 20, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
That's why I said KH2 merely started it.
