I picked up an ender 3 recently for $200 (plus some upgrades, and filament to print with, so all told around $300). Prints great so far. Was relatively easy to build and set up (used a YouTube build guide and just followed that, and it comes with all tools needed). Highly recommend (op's printer, the cr10, is by the same company, it's just a bigger build volume).
Not that this is r/3Dprinting, but another option is the Tevo Tornado (~$400). Got mine for Christmas and it worked great until I cleaned the stage with EtOH and nothing would stick so it jammed my hot-end... anyway, amazing work.
Generally nowadays have 3D printers and they let you uses them as long as you pay for the cost of the materials. So if you go to college or know someone who goes to college you can ask one of the staff that works there to let you use their 3D printer
Is it worth it for someone not able to make any original designs?

Depends on what all you want to print I'd go looking on yeggi or thingiverse for anything you want before you take the plunge but you can get a decent kit printer for around $200 nowadays and with YouTube and the internet it's pretty easy to learn how to model the only experience I had before I got mine was a cad class in highschool 7 years ago

Filament usually ranges $15-$30 / kg on Amazon, other retailer/manufacturer websites are similar. Typically you buy 1kg spools. Other than that there's not really any costs besides maintenance. There's a lot of upgrades you can get for most printers, they're all optional but some are...more useful than others. Generally you can buy them cheaply ($5-$20 for most) or even print them. Then there's stuff you might use to help prints stick to the bed, like gluesticks or hairspray, something to clean the bed with if necessary, finishing tools if you want to make prints look better (like sandpaper, putty, glue, paint, etc.), then there's stuff you might need for specific prints (maybe a print needs glue, or screws, or you decide to print a raspberry pi shell to hold the pi and buttons and screen and battery...).
So, if you don't want to spend much you can get a cheap printer and filament and just print as much as you want. Everything else I've mentioned is fairly optional depending on how far you want to go with the printer or your prints.

It's cut to fit the cr-10 so anything with at least a 500cm (12in) squared build area anything smaller than that and you'll have to cut it up more in meshmixer

Incredible attention to detail aside, this looks like it would make a good home defense weapon. You could seriously mess someone up with it. How much does it weigh?

Cr-10, hatchbox pla, and a few coats of gloss black with Rust-Oleum metal spray paint on top the blade is actually covered in aluminum tape buffed with fine grit steal wool for a brushed steel look

With a shit ton of bubble wrap, the right size box, and of course, the "fragile" warning, it shouldn't be that much of an issue to ship, just as long as the post office and delivers aren't a bunch of lazy dicks.

Ender 3 has decent print quality, but it has a smaller build size limitation, so you'll have to make do with a smaller version, or more cuts.

Cr-10, hatchbox pla, and a few coats of gloss black with Rust-Oleum metal spray paint on top the blade is actually covered in aluminum tape buffed with fine grit steal wool for a brushed steel look
