Most doctors recommend driving for your workouts so you can exercise your car as well. I can get a 10 mile workout done every day while reading the morning news :)
Just run as far as you can, take a walking break to catch your breath, then run some more, for like 20 minutes minimum. Eventually you'll be able to run a km, then 2km (aka over a mile) straight (don't forget a 3-5 minute warmup and cooldown walk at beginning at end).
Alternatively you can follow the C25k plan, but I found the first day a little difficult when I was extremely unfit.

It's not all about fitness though, muscles really come into it when you start from nothing. You need to work your way up slowly, running through that pain can lead to massive muscle soreness or injury.
I run about 3 miles a day now and I'm 210 at 6'0 so I'm super overweight. Takes me a whole hour + to do that and it's super taxing. Guess it depends onw here you're at.

If you started running every day starting at one or two miles and working up, you can get to running 6 miles in ~50 minutes in just several weeks. It fucking sucks at first, but if you push yourself, you improve very quickly.

The article states it should be a one-year goal. These assumptions about brand-new runner, and doing 7 miles immediately are being added on.

Andoo ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:40:45 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
The hardening of the heart is an actual thing. Long distance runners actually suffer from less cardiac benefits when they are running marathons. I think the thing is they do it for so long with so few breaks that it just wears down the heart. There is a healthy balance. I think the knees thing is also partially due to the ground we run on and the pronation of our step and if we are wearing the right stuff.
Jahkral ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 22:29:41 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

TIL that spending an hour running burns a "massive number of calories".
It's 2 slices of Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza. I think you'll manage to find those calories if you need them. But honestly, if you think a one hour running is a "massive use of calories" I would venture a guess that you'll probably be better off not finding them anyway.
If you run with your pizza it loses calories due to wind resistance.
vezance ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 19:24:54 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

iemfi ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:53:59 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Pretty sure it's much less than 2 slices of Pizza Hut pizza. You burn around 100 calories a mile, a single slice of a large stuffed crust pizza is over 300 calories.
I use 2/3 my weight in pounds to estimate calories per mile. I'm just over 155, so it's pretty close to 100 for me. But for a 225 pound person, closer to 150.
This is generally lower than most apps estimate, though Garmin with HRM is pretty close.
It took me 18 months to get to the point where I can run an easy 7 miles, well, easily. I agree with you for a fit runner; but for a C25K person, no way.

ovoKOS7 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:42:05 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Actually no, they're saying to go from a mile to seven in a year.
You definitely don't want to make such huge strides in such a short period of time. I would assume someone who is running 1 mile a day is probably only running 3 times a week. The best way to do it is to run your typical distance 2 of those 3 and on the third slightly increase the distance you're going. Increasing distance so rapidly will cause a lot of pain, including Runner's Knee and Shin splints plus possible injuries to the hip flexor. Any of those injuries will be pretty big set backs.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:11:05 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
What's the difference between a short two miles and a long two miles? Terrain and elevation?
On missing the elevator, have you tried acting like you were not really going for the elevator? And then some friendly idiot in the elevator decides that they want to help and opens the door at the last moment as the door is about to shut close...
Now, that friendly person is inviting you in, but you are in the middle of your act in which you were not going for the elevator - just admiring the paintings in the elevator lobby. If it strikes your fancy, you might even seek to admire your reflection in the elevator doors... and seem irritated at the fact that your buddy in the elevator is spoiling your indulgence by keeping the doors open. 'Would you mind closing the doors? I need to fix my tie here... '. 'But you are not wearing a tie'. 'Dear me... the last elevator door must have had a triangular pattern on it'.
About catching the foot and the little compensating jog... I don't do that. I try to get distracted while I fall... and if I miss, I will fly.

Well, I certainly applaud anyone wanting to eat 100 treadmills, but take it from this old treadmills rat, I've spent my entire adult life eating treadmills, and a program like this one can do more harm than good.
If you only eat treadmills with one part of your body (and that's all a single exercise machine type like a treadmill is going to do for you), you're setting yourself up for injuries down the road. I've seen it a hundred times.
Eating treadmills basically only trains the gastric acids and to some extent, the jaw. What you really want to do is train all of your secretions, all the major fluids (testosterone, bile, and stomach acid) at the same time, over the course of eating an entire gym. So, you will need to add a step-machine and a stationary bike. Ask for the "Go Metal" program.
I'm proud of you guys wanting to do this. Big Treadmills! Falling in love with eating treadmills, etc., is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. And you WILL fall in love with it if you can just force yourself to stick with it a year or two and experience the amazing progress you'll make.
But do it right, okay?
My advice, find any gym near you, with qualified dentists who will design your metal teeth for you (especially in the beginning, until you get the hang of it yourself) and guide you in your quest for eating metal. Three to 5 treadmills a day, three days a week, is all you'll ever need to do (I refuse to believe anyone is so busy that he or she cannot make time for that, especially considering how important it is).
And don't worry about being embarrassed or not having chipped teeth the first time you walk into the gym. You have to start somewhere and almost every one of us were there ourselves at one time. So no one will say anything to you and very, very quickly you will progress way beyond that stage anyway.
Now get out there and bite! Hard! :-)

Seven miles... They want us to just increase our run distance by 600%?!
I'm so fucking glad you used the right percentage because I'm still made at my grade school math teacher for marking a question like this wrong when I got it right.
"If you increase the volume of a box by 300%, how many of the old boxes will fit into the new box?"
4, right? WELL ACCORDING TO MY MATH TEACHER THE ANSWER IS 3. FUCK OFF MRS. JOHNSON!
That's pretty terrible.
If she couldn't figure that out, I'm sure she was passing on a lot of other bad logic/information...
mcbunn ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:34:53 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
That's also a stupid question. You would need to increase one and only one dimension of the box by 300% to make four boxes fit. Otherwise you'd need to cut up at least one of the boxes to fill the space.

It's not all about fitness though, muscles really come into it when you start from nothing. You need to work your way up slowly, running through that pain can lead to massive muscle soreness or injury.

If you started running every day starting at one or two miles and working up, you can get to running 6 miles in ~50 minutes in just several weeks. It fucking sucks at first, but if you push yourself, you improve very quickly.

Pretty sure it's much less than 2 slices of Pizza Hut pizza. You burn around 100 calories a mile, a single slice of a large stuffed crust pizza is over 300 calories.
Some_Other_Sherman ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:03:41 on November 21, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I use 2/3 my weight in pounds to estimate calories per mile. I'm just over 155, so it's pretty close to 100 for me. But for a 225 pound person, closer to 150.
This is generally lower than most apps estimate, though Garmin with HRM is pretty close.

Mastodon9 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:55:12 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
You definitely don't want to make such huge strides in such a short period of time. I would assume someone who is running 1 mile a day is probably only running 3 times a week. The best way to do it is to run your typical distance 2 of those 3 and on the third slightly increase the distance you're going. Increasing distance so rapidly will cause a lot of pain, including Runner's Knee and Shin splints plus possible injuries to the hip flexor. Any of those injuries will be pretty big set backs.

Hard! :-)

Maybe we should add an 8th.
ZippyDan ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 18:40:19 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Isn't that a 700% increase?
vezance ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 18:59:23 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
No, it's 700% of the original.
The first mile is 100% of your distance. Now you want to run 7 miles i.e. 700% distance. 700-100 = 600% more distance.
Hope that made sense.
ZippyDan ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 18:41:17 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I think they meant to increase your run frequency by 7. In other words, instead of running a mile a day, run a mile 7 days.
Roro_Yurboat ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:43:56 on November 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
It would take me 7 days to run a mile.

I don't think you should applaud someone who intentionally causes misinformation on media sites. :/
Maybe you're just young, but stuff like this is ruining the Internet. You'll start to realize that when you get older...

aaron403 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:26:49 on November 21, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
'Front' page is only your subs. You have to browse 'all' to see stuff you're not subbed too.
Then the question becomes if you actually know what this is and don't think it's funny... why on earth would you spend time in the comments?
behar1 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:38:36 on November 21, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Hey guy. From my comment I clearly didn't know the difference between front page and all. Thanks for clearing that up. Second, I never said anything about it being funny or not, I just had no idea who ken m was. Thanks though.
