Edit: as some of you correctly pointed out, I computed the time where the hands are semetrically offset just before 6:30. The time with least squares distance will be slightly after this time as the minute hand moves faster than the hour hand. And as some of you even more correctly pointed out, the time slightly after 5:30 would also have both hands be closer to being down. Thanks for the corrections! I see what you did but I think it would actually be a little bit earlier because the hour hand would be extended slightly further down (due to the further advanced minutes than 27 after 6). Actually, while I don't know the math behind the 6:27 and change calculation, I think the 5:31-32ish would actually be even more greatly downward than 6:27...

Anyway, let's call x the offset in minutes from 6:30. So x=5 means it's 6:35.
Now we calculate the offset from the hands from the down position, measured in hours on the clock. So an offset of 1 means the hand is either on 7 or on 5.
Then the offset of the minutes hand from the down position is x/5, because five minutes of the minutes hand equals an hour on the clock, while the offset from the hour hand is 0.5 + x/60:
0.5 is the offset the hour hand has on 6:30, and 60 minutes of the hour hand equals an hour on the clock.
So the sum of the squared differences is (x/5)^2 + (0.5 + x/60)^2. This is obviously a parabola, with it's lowest point on ~ -0.2069. To see this on wolfram alpha, click the properties link in the Geometric Figure section.
So the best offset is -0.2069 minutes, or -12.414 seconds; the best time is 6:29:47.586.

Replicating the calculation you and OP are doing, 6:29:48s is when a clock is most "hands down" (look at the Sum Cos column). So same answer as you.
However, I feel hand length is important. The minute hand is much longer than the hour hand. Using Big Ben as a reference, it's hour hand is 9 feet while it's minute hand is 14 feet. Applying this ratio to these calculations, we find that 6:29:52 is the moment when a clock is most "hands down" (Sum Length Down column)

oh yeah -uuups - you're right. the right calculation would be this (again, parabola), with the perfect offset being -0.499918 minutes, or -29.99508 seconds. So pretty much exactly half a minute offset.
most of the time if you look at differences you want to minimize, you actually try to minimize the square differences; because squaring them stops you from making one of the differences very big and the other difference very small; also squaring the difference has the effect that it's always positive; otherwise you would have to take the absolute.
For example, the mean value actually minimizes the squared differences (the median minimizes the absolute differences). Also, linear regressions (something like this) actually minimizes the squared distances from the points to the line.
TL;DR: Minimizing squared distances is what you intuitively do if you try to "minimize the distance/difference". Therefore it's used most of the time if you expect something like that.

That one does seem a bit less likely to have come from multiple independent origins, but even if it was taken from your Twitter and posted here, that just means that the person thought your joke was funny enough to share with other people! I can definitely understand the frustration, but to me, this seems like a good thing. Like I said earlier, jokes are meant to be retold. Funny jokes get retold more often than unfunny ones. I doubt the person that posted it meant any ill will towards you even if they did get it from your Twitter. Seems more likely to me that they either didn't remember where they heard it first (you posted it 4 years ago, and it was posted to Reddit three years ago), they thought that saying "I heard this joke from this source" would sound more like shilling than just sharing the joke (which it often does), or they just didn't think it was that big of a deal.
The reality is, if you're good at writing jokes, then they're going to be shared in places other than your Twitter often without you knowing at all. The best thing you can do is to try to take it as a compliment and to try to take satisfaction in the fact that people like what you do.

At 6:30, the hour hand would be half way between 6 and 7. The time where both hands have the least squares angle difference to the down position is about 6:27:41.538... I liked your joke. My math curiosity just got the better of me.
Edit: as some of you correctly pointed out, I computed the time where the hands are semetrically offset just before 6:30. The time with least squares distance will be slightly after this time as the minute hand moves faster than the hour hand. And as some of you even more correctly pointed out, the time slightly after 5:30 would also have both hands be closer to being down. Thanks for the corrections! I hope I can still be invited to parties after this.

I see what you did but I think it would actually be a little bit earlier because the hour hand would be extended slightly further down (due to the further advanced minutes than 27 after 6). Actually, while I don't know the math behind the 6:27 and change calculation, I think the 5:31-32ish would actually be even more greatly downward than 6:27...

However, I feel hand length is important. The minute hand is much longer than the hour hand. Using Big Ben as a reference, it's hour hand is 9 feet while it's minute hand is 14 feet. Applying this ratio to these calculations, we find that 6:29:52 is the moment when a clock is most "hands down" (Sum Length Down column)
TLDR: this joke is bullshit.

most of the time if you look at differences you want to minimize, you actually try to minimize the square differences; because squaring them stops you from making one of the differences very big and the other difference very small; also squaring the difference has the effect that it's always positive; otherwise you would have to take the absolute.
For example, the mean value actually minimizes the squared differences (the median minimizes the absolute differences). Also, linear regressions (something like this) actually minimizes the squared distances from the points to the line.
TL;DR: Minimizing squared distances is what you intuitively do if you try to "minimize the distance/difference". Therefore it's used most of the time if you expect something like that.

I just meant that the joke is not particularly complex, and I have no doubt that it's been thought of multiple times independent of each other. "Stolen" just isn't an appropriate term for jokes unless a person is dishonestly claiming originality.

That one does seem a bit less likely to have come from multiple independent origins, but even if it was taken from your Twitter and posted here, that just means that the person thought your joke was funny enough to share with other people! I can definitely understand the frustration, but to me, this seems like a good thing. Like I said earlier, jokes are meant to be retold. Funny jokes get retold more often than unfunny ones. I doubt the person that posted it meant any ill will towards you even if they did get it from your Twitter. Seems more likely to me that they either didn't remember where they heard it first (you posted it 4 years ago, and it was posted to Reddit three years ago), they thought that saying "I heard this joke from this source" would sound more like shilling than just sharing the joke (which it often does), or they just didn't think it was that big of a deal.
The reality is, if you're good at writing jokes, then they're going to be shared in places other than your Twitter often without you knowing at all. The best thing you can do is to try to take it as a compliment and to try to take satisfaction in the fact that people like what you do.
