Reminds me of my recently passed grandfather: "I went to the doctor and he said I can only have one glass of wine a day. So, the bottle is now my one glass."
It came to mind, as I hit enter, and saw my joke through eyes of a reader. That I had taken the poetic liberty to have the joke work. It literally was my first thought. The very next thought was I bet someone with OCD comments on it.
Plenty have argued for the idea of retesting elderly drivers every so often.
The counter argument is that this, age based retesting, is ageist, a form of discrimination. I can't disagree with this argument.
This is partially why I think society needs two things, mandatory full drivers license retesting ever 10 years (minimum) for all. In addition, the drivers license test should be many times more difficult.
But then isn't social security and other age base programs also agiest etc.? Or age of consent? If you can establish that, statistically, a group is more likely to be bad drivers why is it an -ist to have heavier regulation for that group?
But then isn't social security and other age base programs also agiest etc.? Or age of consent? If you can establish that, statistically, a group is more likely to be bad drivers why is it an -ist to have heavier regulation for that group?
Thanks for the comment. I didn't post my bit in an effort to debate ageism. I am simply able to acknowledge that forcing people just based on age to retake tests alone is indeed ageist.
Or age of consent?
Honestly, a lot of the ideas surrounding age based laws is, in my opinion, brutally ageist and discriminatory. The largest conflict in my mind is that people as young as 10 in many places are put on trial and convicted for their crimes, being placed in prison from there. But beyond that there isn't any real way to be declared an adult beyond simply being alive an amount of time.
While the notion of creating a carte blanche sort of approach where everyone is basically an adult is likely ludicrous and a similar extreme, my middle ground take on this idea is (much like my previous suggestion) a test! I'd simply call it an adulthood test, able to be taken at any age and with that, after passing the adulthood test, a lot of the age based restriction simply vanishes.
Instead of me asking you a bunch of questions, I recommend instead you visit /r/changemyview and post this very comment as your view to change. Defend your perspective and try to have an open mind on others.
I just had cataract surgery. A year before my surgery I passed the eye test (in one eye) and received an 8 year licence. think about that as you drive down the road. There are people with valid licenses who cannot see. If you don't have running lights, use your headlights, all the time.
I've heard this stories and even know a few individuals related. One man is close to blind, incredibly senile, but thinks it's a grave injustice that he had his license revoked. I think it's a tragedy that he didn't lose his license years earlier based on the stories and things I saw from his driving.
I don't understand why so many take the idea of a 2 ton car traveling at speed so casually.

Nope, as I mentioned in my original post I find it doesn't pair well with humor. I believe you're projecting your own feelings of "triggering" (a term I've never used myself) onto me.

I like this joke, but there is surely a little truth to it. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/news/superior/3848823-umd-mourns-staff-member-killed-while-bicycling-hermantown
Hohenheim_of_Shadow · 4 points · Posted at 23:43:39 on December 1, 2015 · (Permalink)
But then isn't social security and other age base programs also agiest etc.? Or age of consent? If you can establish that, statistically, a group is more likely to be bad drivers why is it an -ist to have heavier regulation for that group?

wateryouwaitingforq · 1 points · Posted at 01:55:06 on December 2, 2015 · (Permalink)
Thanks for the comment. I didn't post my bit in an effort to debate ageism. I am simply able to acknowledge that forcing people just based on age to retake tests alone is indeed ageist.
Horace_P_Mctits · 1 points · Posted at 08:05:13 on December 2, 2015 · (Permalink)

I just had cataract surgery. A year before my surgery I passed the eye test (in one eye) and received an 8 year licence. think about that as you drive down the road. There are people with valid licenses who cannot see. If you don't have running lights, use your headlights, all the time.
It's worse at night.
wateryouwaitingforq · 2 points · Posted at 01:48:01 on December 2, 2015 · (Permalink)
