Same here, mine looks like a 8 year old boy wrote it.. I'm a nearly 40 year old female. So jealous of people with nice handwriting but my brain-to-hand controls just don't work like that!

In undergrad, I broke my hand and the next day I had a test in a geology class. My hand was in a splint with all four fingers bound together, so I had to use both hands to move my pen in order to write. It took me the entirety of the time to take the test, and my handwriting was more legible than it had ever been, or since.
That day or the next day, I got a proper splint for the type of fracture that is was, which only bound up my ring finger and pinky, allowing me to write properly from then on (read: which allowed me to continue to write illegibly from then on).

I don't even understand how its possible to not be able to read your own handwriting. There's like 25 or so letters give or take, it's not that hard!
But I did take out a book from my high schools library and took an hour one day practicing how to write letters and never had an issue after because my handwriting was pretty atrocious.
Back in highschool I had the same problem with my handwriting, and found that writing my tests in pencil usually resulted in me not being able to read it without really trying to decipher it. Except that with pen ink I could read it back. Too bad many of them asked for pencil since they didn't want to see a bunch of crossed out mistakes.
It was a blessing when the federal government rolled out their laptop program. It didn't fix my test problems, but note-taking was far easier and I often had class time to work on assignments, getting them done sooner. I worked faster (Runescape honed my typing speed back in the day) and wasn't limited by computer lab numbers.
Though knowing a few years later how much that cost my mum has left me with disdain for the school's extortionist price. Only when I left did they fix it! I was a part of the successful trial run of nearly senior students, so I reaped the benefits for 2 years.

As someone with bad handwriting, it's not just that the letters are messy. They're not consistent. I can easily read my own handwriting if it's something I'm currently working on. But if I go to try and read something I wrote yesterday, (or worse, last year) it will be incredibly difficult to decipher. The spaces between each letter and each word are always different sizes, each letter is shaped differently each time I write it, different pressure on the pencil each time.
Another thing that complicates it is the fact that my Us, Ns, and Ms all are completely indistinguishable. Frustrating.

Just google some stuff and make a conscious effort to change it. If I can do it I believe you can too. But it is frustrating to not be able to read your own handwriting whichis why I made sure to change mine.
When I was in Elementary school, trust me, my teachers tried their best to change it, and I wanted it to be better too. I did so many of those handwriting books. I can tell you my handwriting now is indistinguishable from when I was in kindergarten. I just don't have the ability to evenly space out letters or to draw them consistently.

Exactly, I don't stress it-- it has some benefits, like sometimes allowing me to use the computer for projects that wouldnt otherwise be allowed for. There's also been numerous times it's saved me with he old "can't read your homework so it looks like you finished it".

We do all studying and a lot of tests on our laptops. Those test are all 'everything except internet' as rules. The internet is closed for us (we have individual users on the network). Only thing they disallow for some reason are earphones because fuck reason.

We also had individual users.. so the trick was to just borrow an account from someone in a test-free class.
Im currently studying programming, and we do loads of tests on a laptop. However 1 guy lets us take tests on paper, last monday we had to write down a full node.js application. Luckily his handwriting is quite similar to mine, he never complained to me about it so :)

I am quite dyslexic and when I was in secondary school after I finally got my diagnosis they let me rent out a school laptop everyday for class work and I had one in exams. Everything was blocked apart from word and paint, including the internet and there was no spell or grammar checker on it. Because I got a different one every morning and gave it back at the end of each school day I couldn't hack it or re-install the OS and the exam one was set up for me before I entered the room and everyone with laptops was in a separate room with a woman whose only job was to walk around and check we were only doing our tests.

I just graduated HS and my junior and senior years we were given school issued iPads. Physics was basically all iPad based and English used to give quizzes that were laughably easy to cheat on. I think they're increasing restrictions next year โ๐ฝ
Dude, my English teacher in high school took one look at my first essay (it was a "what do you want to learn" type thing) and pulled me aside the second day of class and asked if I would like to type all of my assignments from then on.
I happily obliged, and I spent more time playing games on addictinggames.com than I did working. Thank you mobile hotspot for clutching my junior/senior years.
I dated a guy who was personally gifted a laptop by one of the history teachers because his handwriting was so bad. I was jealous, but I have good handwriting so not really, I guess.
In high school, I was told, "When you're in college, they won't accept your papers written like this." Sure enough, in college, I'd get a paper handed back with the instructions to type it up.
What I don't understand is why 18-year-olds are handwriting papers in 2016. Thought they stopped teaching kids to write, and now expect them to use computers for everything?
After highschool I haven't be required to handwrite anything. Even my old fashioned English professor who wanted notes and brainstorming handwritten in pen was ok with me typing it up when I explained the situation.
When my uncle went back to university, his lecturers put him into a disability scheme to allow him type up all his tests. He is fully abled, but his handwriting is just that bad.

Wow, that's lucky! I am a teacher and if I (and my colleagues) genuinely cannot decipher a student's writing, we are forced to consider it an incorrect answer. So if your test really was that illegible, I would have had no choice but to put a giant red cross though it all.
You have to make an active effort to change it. I didnt like my signiture so I forced my self to sign a certain way for a month or two and boom. New signiture
I felt the same way for a long time. One day I just decided to start working on it. I switched to cursive (agonizing to begin again... Was so slow!) but just forced myself to keep to it. At work, I would take notes on everything I could to work handwriting practice into the day so I didn't have to take time at home. No abbreviations, etc. You'd be surprised how well you can do. In a short span, I had 3 or 4 people specifically comment on how nice my handwriting looked. Give it a go!

I found writing in cursive helpful for my dyslexia, I don't transpose any of the cursive letters. Writing in print I'll flip lowercase "d" and "b" every time. I'm also left handed, so the penmanship struggle is real, but my cursive always looks nice!

My handwriting is finally becoming legible. I'm 55. I gave up trying to write cursive in high school (about age 15) because I could barely read it myself. Switched to one letter at a time printing. I'm pretty good at it, and pretty fast. But a nice script that flows and is legible would be faster, and would, you know, complete a thing I set out to do half a century ago. But it's a lot of work. Many hours of practice. I really don't care enough, and I'm OK with that.
What's changed is that I'm using a keyboard app on my phone that converts handwriting to text. I started with my usual block print. Works OK. Then I realized that the app can interpret my insult-to-the-concept-of-written-language cursive script. It's like an anti-kismet. If you can read my handwriting, you must be a robot. But I can lay down that script faster than I can print, and the app actually interprets it more accurately than my printing.
So now I'm writing cursive quite a bit, with nobody criticizing me. And it's getting better. Still not particularly legible, but smoother and prettier, and the legible part is improving too.

I think that's very good for unlined paper which it appears to be. If there are lines I still think that's pretty good, it's very clear and flowing, and the spacing and consistency is great. I don't much about the guy, but his writing is very precise and orderly.
People with nice handwriting didn't get it magically. I have nice handwriting because when I was in 7th grade I wanted to have nice handwriting so I practiced it all the time and decided which letter shapes I liked best.
I'm the same, was hellbent on developing my own perfect style as a kid. Still hand write my notes at uni as a learning boost, and it keeps the practice up. Means I always have the most impressive birthday cards for people.
Weird part was at about 25 I saw my dad's handwriting (well I'd seen it before but never really "looked") and it's nearly IDENTICAL. Not sure if hereditary hand shape or inadvertent viewing when younger, but creeped me out!

Nope. When I first started my forays into other writing systems I was disappointed: handwriting follows you. You just have to write slowly and re-train yourself to write the way you want to write.
Really? I'm literate in a couple languages and they all look the same- but they're also more similar than Farsi and Spanish, thinking about it. Greek and Cyrillic are a lot closer to Roman letters.

It does my heart good to hear of a female with shitty handwriting. My handwriting has good days and bad days but is still mostly illegible -- my wife can't read it at all (which comes in handy sometimes). In the fourth grade, it was so bad that I myself couldn't read it -- which was the impetus for teaching myself to type. All the girls, though, had beautiful handwriting: loops and swirls like something out of Pink Unicorn Land, and -- true to the stereotype -- sometimes little hearts instead of the dots over the i's. ("Ever notice the j's don't get hearts? This is I-ism! Anti-J discrimination!" <eyeroll>)
You have to just practice a lot. My hand writing isnt great, but its okay and I didnt really get good until college when I started writing a lot but also I practiced a little bit 5 minutes here 5 minutes there just writing some extra words or writing he letters of hte alphabet. It really helps, trying watching a video online of people writing the letter so you can see exactly how they do it.
When teachers make me take notes I write a bunch of dense words that are unreadable and they just pass it off as my messy writing, I don't need none notes

My biggest issue is I can't be consistent. None of my handwritten letters are standardized. I can't imagine my writing could be turned into a font, because each time I write the letter f (for example), it looks completely different.
Whenever I had to do handwritten thank-you letters back during my senior year of high school I made three sets of font using my handwriting and then I alternated which font I used and made a generic thank you card that looks like it was hand-written
I've been told my handwriting looks like the Unibomber's handwriting. It worries my parents.

You can support at least some of that by putting ligatures into your font. I'm not sure if this site supports that, but it can be done with more professional software.
Same! My "e"s are almost always connected to the letter before them. My "h"s basically turn into "l" shapes in the middle of a word. And sometimes my "a"s are joined the to letter after them.
For a Christmas present for my mom this year, I took some of my dad's handwriting from a letter he wrote me when I was young and pieced the words and letters together, sampling throughout, to recreate a poem that we had hanging in our front entryway in his handwriting. I thought it was the best I could do since he passed this last August. The way I had to make every letter different, and adjust everything to fit just so it would look like it was actually written by hand was painstaking but ultimately worth it. I would recommend it, but you can't just use a font to achieve it without some serious time involved.

I was thinking the same thing. In cursive the connection from "a" to "f" or "a" to "d" is massively different, in one case the upwards swing forms a forwards loop that makes half the next letter, in the other a backwards swing to make half the next letter.

Somehow the entire Gaster thing manages to be bloody terrifying. I think 90% of it is that Toby managed perfectly to hide the stuff away and actually make it look like it was meant to be deleted.
Looking at the files and the ways they can be loaded, it genuinely looks similar to when I used to go hunting through the filesystems and code for older games looking for unused content.
So, I turned in an essay in wingdings once, circa 7th grade. Our teacher said we could use any font we wanted for it. She wasn't impressed, and I got docked a whole letter grade for it, because she made me turn it in again in Times New Roman, 12pt, double spaced, and gave me exact margins and all that jazz to use. She considered it late because the original paper wasn't a proper paper.
Totally fuckin' worth it. My entire class knows me as "the kid who turned in pictures for a writing assignment"

Ha ive had teachers do the same, i think got the first one about 20 something years ago i would have been about 8 or 9 when a teacher pulled me aside to tell me that my assignments MUST be typed. I mean i can write neatly if needed but its slow, i can read my writing just fine though also a good drawer.
Geez, when my writing was bad, my teacher forced me to use some weird grip learning block around my pen. I was the last one in class to still be using that thing.
I think I'd still be using it if we didn't invent computers.
In art school one of my professors called my handwriting "serial killeresque" so just being able to draw doesn't necessarily mean good penmanship. I can replicate any font, do sign painting and traditional calligraphy, my actual handwritings looks like a Batman villains.
I was planning on doing this with my late father's handwriting. He was an architect and had such neat penmanship. I miss seeing his writing. When he died my brother sister and I were trying to figure out what to do with his ashes. We finally settled on sending out for one of those homemade hourglass kits and putting them in there since he was always late. It would be great to have the inscription with his writing. We would put about one hour but of course it would be totally off. I guess it's time to follow through with this plan now. Better late then never!
That's actually a really thoughtful idea of what to do with his ashes. Essentially the same as having them in an urn, but personalized. I hope it turns out well if you decide to do it!

As long as you still have some of his papers, you could probably still do this!
The good thing about "architect" handwriting is that you can always find neatly separated letters in any decent-size sample. Even if the examples you had were in pencil, it would not be difficult at all to scan them, isolate the letters you'd need, and then "thicken" them and add contrast (if needed) to make them appear just like pen (that's at least if you want to do it like this website; if not, vLetter would likely be able to help you out).
Actually, when I first came across MyScriptFont today on here, the very first thing I thought of was "cloning" my dad's handwriting as well--he's a graphic designer, but his handwriting has always looked exactly like an architect's (I don't know why--maybe he read some books about Frank Lloyd Wright as a kid?). He's always written like that, and he has his own distinctive style. I tried copying him for years as a kid too (until it became apparent just how cumbersome it was to write my school papers in all-caps--not to mention, my teachers didn't exactly enjoy reading it ;) ).
As long as you had some good samples to work with, I don't see why this couldn't be done in a matter of hours! Even if it was pencil (might take a little more work, but not much).
Architects have great writing. I used to help one frequently at a photolab I worked at and he remarked on my writing. I had taken an architecture class, coupled with picking up my mom's habit of writing in all caps, I had a similar style.
I really love the idea of the hourglasses. While I find keeping someone's ashes a hair morbid, having them in such a unique vessel is rather interesting.

Am architect. Cannot confirm. Some do, yes, and if they do its often memorable and very individual. And we all learned at one point how to do legible lettering on plans (hint: write very slowly and make an effort to draw proper shapes). But in everyday life most of us have just the same chicken scratch as everybody else.

I am not a fixed width font guy personally, but this font doesn't allow you to camelCase because the lowercase characters are the same as the uppercase ones from what I can see (and I don't like separating by _ or -) so reading names might be a little hard

Nice font, however the problem with having Roman Numerals is that they are not a positional numbering system. So for example, instead of writing XXXIII for 33, you end up with IIIIII.
So shit writing on a prescription actually ended up hurting me a while back. My pharmacist read bisprolol (beta blocker) as lisinopril (blood vessel dilator) and mixed up the prescriptions. My blood pressure tanked with the lisinopril dosage I was taking because I was needing the bisoprolol for high heart rate issues (140+ rate when resting). I would get up out of bed and pass out because my blood pressure would go through the floor, and I couldn't walk to my university classes because I kept passing out if I walked to quickly or it was too hot out. Was kinda scary when I figured out the problem myself because my doctor didn't know what was wrong since he didn't know I had been given the wrong medication (I didn't either until I looked into what lisinopril did to your body). So, I really appreciate your legible handwriting.
Never understood this. You'd think that someone who is trying to convey important fucking medical information could take a few extra seconds to make their handwriting somewhat legible.

What name? How does it know your name? If you're really concerned just use a proxy or go to a coffee shop. Plus any document you would sign needs your signature.

Exactly, my signature changes between a sine and cosine wave depending on how quickly I want to finish signing the document. If I ever see a document with my actual letters spelled out I know it's forged.

Personally, I've done this and using a blunt tipped sharpie, like I believe it recommends, leaves a result that does not look like something anyone would write, as well most documents that you would write in your handwriting would also need a signature. Not saying that it couldn't happen I just personally believe it's unlikely.

In other countries does signature not imply cursive/scribble?
In the UK we're taught 'joined up writing'; the letter forms are generally kept the same as if they were individually drawn, but I think connecting them allows much more of an individualised scrawl to emerge so the overall effect isn't a million miles away.
I've never known script to mean anything here in the UK other than a person's own style of writing; a slightly archaic alternative to the word 'handwriting'.
No because every letter would be perfectly identical. Go look at something you've written. While te letters are similar they are a far from exact copies.

Unless it has an ascender, descender or tittle pretty much every letter I write just looks like a wavy line. I make doctors look like calligraphers by comparison.
Just writing out the individual letters doesn't mean the end result will look like your actual handwriting. For example, everyone has various letter pairs that they write uniquely. One of mine is the letter pair "er" where the end of the e extends and forms the r. This program can't accurately mimic that type of thing
I am American and learned cursive in school... over time it turned into joined up. My kids learned cursive at school but no real emphasis on using it because computers. I was just thinking the other day how sad it will be when handwriting becomes obsolete.

Joined up is what cursive was called when you learn to write in grade two cause cursive is a tricky word back then.
Personally I think the art of handwriting is dying. I am proud of my hand writing but continue to spend time perfecting it. I don't understand why people with handwriting that is illegible don't put in the effort to write neatly and clearly.
Doesn't it adversely impact your ability to effectively communicate as a human being?

Um, no. I never heard the phrase "joined-up" until I went on the internet and saw a Brit use it and it was explained. So you may go and tell those people that they are wrong in what they call three different types of handwriting (fourth type excluded: block letters).
Cursive was called cursive when I learned it in grade three. "Joined-up" did not enter my knowledge until 5 or so years ago.
Cursive is not simply "linked together", it is a prescripted way of linking things together. My writing is not cursive, because I don't like a lot of the style in cursive, so I use joined-up letters to write. they are distinctly different.
And penmanship, a word you seem to avoid, has never been important to me.

Seems, yes, but it isn't. Not only does it teach important fine motor skills, it's also simpler than print, and allows one to develop a personal, efficient-yet-legible hand-writing better than learning print first:
It's easier mostly because in cursive scripts you only have to worry about two dimensions -- those of the paper -- and not additionally care about lifting and lowering the pen, which you need to do in print because otherwise you'd be crossing all over your letters.
(Of course, you still need to dot your 'i's and cross your 't's but overall, you have to worry much less).
Once you have that skill, you can move on to print, or, rather, because that's simpler: Print with ligatures.
The only reason it is percieved as "hard" is because the letter forms do not match up with what's printed in books. But that's just the Latin script for you, it also contains other silliness (like having capital letters).

I've yet to see a published report that proved that cursive improved motor skills any more than just trying to write legible print. I know plenty of people with shitty handwriting but have awesome hand eye coordination and dexterity with their hands (assembling teeny tiny electronics circuits)
It saddens me that they stopped teaching cursive. I had a TEENAGER watch me write something in cursive and stare at it blankly and ask what it said. Side note: I have nice handwriting!! I was disheartened. This translates to signatures, too! Teenagers are signing their names using individually spaced (and primary-school-looking printing) letters! WTF?

For signatures? Yes. For daily writing who cares, but giving kids the option to use it in the future is wise and takes virtually no school time.
Apparently cursive and joined up are two separate things so this isn't extremely relevant. But when I took the GRE, the writing section was required to be in cursive. So that sucked considering I hadnt used it in like a decade.
I don't understand why that would be a requirement. Wouldn't that make it so much harder to read and grade all those papers? I guess if someone's writing is illegible it makes it easier to auto-fail them.
I don't even really understand the historical/cultural reasons for why cursive was seen as the professional/high-class style of writing. Even for people who read and write cursive all day, it's still harder to read than print if a person's got poor handwriting, and you still get professional people that have super-shit handwriting. Doctors can literally cause people to die due to mishaps related to bad handwriting.
I understand why people might use it in their personal notes/writing, I don't understand why that was the default for communicating with other people.

Is cursive a font itself, or just the method of joining-up words? I knew there would be a difference in terminology, cursive sounds weird to me. Print is extremely slow compared, as well as more subjective negatives
I looked up joined up since we don't teach that here, and that seems to be it. My cursive and print are shitty since I haven't written in cursive nor print since I was a child. We teach print, and my school taught cursive. Joined up seems to be their love child, and it is more efficient than cursive and print.

only people over 30, they've mostly eliminated cursive in schools now, other than a short intro so that they can have some hope of interpreting it at some point. It's a lost art. I don't see the value myself either. I can print as fast as I cursive, and it's more legible.

I was taught print and cursive. Now as an adult I write "joined up", I wasn't taught it, I just started joining up my print letters. I actually had to look up what joined up is. It's a lot easier to write joined up than cursive and print, but joined up isn't formally taught. Some of us just discover it by accident.
Yep. The reason, I think, is because when they used to teach cursive in school they didn't teach it as a practical, quick way to write, but rather as some sort of artform. So after you learn it, you just go back to printing, which is faster. If they taught cursive as a practical form, less focus on the prettiness of it and more focus on the speed of writing, it would still be around.

I wish I could write normally.... I can only write conjoined writing because it was drilled into my skull between the 2nd and 9th grade. In some cases it was MANDATORY to write conjoined so now I just can't write normally. And to top it off, my conjoined writing is so bad that even I can't read it sometimes.
Edit: Here's the font I made out of my handwriting. I did all of this with my mouse, trying to mimic my actual writing as closely as possible. It looks like shit but if properly conjoined, it would look even worse, just like my real handwriting.

I honestly hate cursive. A lot of my coworkers use it and it takes me like 3 times longer to read. I guess it's faster if you're good at it, but I haven't used it in almost 20 years so it's like trying to solve a riddle whenever I see it.
FFS we should practice more or something. As a side note, I was a student science ambassador type person (designed and tested an acid rain experiment) for the CSIRO in highschool. It was some lame science achievers thing but they let me play with deep ice from Antarctica so that was cool!

At least it has personality. Kind of a cool grit to it. Mine looks like a 6 year old kid who just learned how to hold a pen complemented with copious amounts of lefty smudge.

Yup. I used a sharpie for a "bold" text variant. It's neat, although double letters make it pretty obvious that it isn't handwritten. And it's pretty easy to put the font in your system files so you can use it in any program. Of course, others can't see it unless you print it out or screenshot it, because they don't have your font file on their computer.
If I put more than 5 minutes in it, I could probably make a decent font out of it. I can write really neatly if I really spend some time, or I can write chicken scratching that even I can barely read. This one was kinda middle of those two.
My daughter is amazed by my formal cursive, they actually don't teach it in her school. I guess it's a soon-to-be lost art. We actually had separate spelling and handwriting classes in addition to English class, which was reading and grammar. I'm teaching it to my kids now.
I did this once for a paper in my world history class a couple years ago, my teacher said it must be hand written and it was about the 50th essay we'd written all year so I was sick of it. I decided to try this out and it worked.
When I brought it to class the only thing he asked was why it was on printer paper and not lined, the excuse I gave was that I was out of lined paper at my house, lol. I got a 95 on the paper and he never said anything about it being typed.
My wife and I used this site to make fonts for our wedding thank you cards. Way easier to type personalized cards and our friends mostly thought they were handwritten!
I've been looking for something like this. I occasionally make comic strips and stuff like that, and lettering is such a pain in the butt if I want to digitize/color them.
I tried a couple different solutions that do this same thing, mostly with poor results (letters not being fully represented, being misaligned).
People seem to be having pretty good results with this from what I see, I'll have to try it out.
There's also a mobile/tablet app! I used the app on my tablet so I could just use my stylus and save time. When I was in a LDR, my boyfriend and I used each other's handwriting as our fonts for texts. Always made me smile seeing a message from him in his actual handwriting.
A couple years ago, I made a font with my grandma's handwriting and even had her draw little doodles for some of the characters I knew I'd never use. I typed out some of her recipes in her handwriting, submitted the PDF to be printed onto fabric, and made pot holders out of it for the family.
She had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and I'm glad I thought to do it before her handwriting started to worsen.

Man, my handwriting looks so bad. My brother however, who is 10 years older than me and went through school before computers were even a thing has pretty much the most beautiful handwriting I have ever seen.

Books on making comics usually have a chapter about this, and they all recommend that you actually scan at least two different copies of each letter, as re-using the exact same letter all the time looks odd (especially if they appear in the same word).
In cursive is indispensable for note taking. It's so much faster than print. I think most of my generation has two scripts, the formal schoolbook cursive and a freehand, doctors script that only the writer can decipher.
Just tried it on mac, it has all the letters weirdly shifted. It shows "the quick brown fox jumps." correctly on the site, but installing the font just gives me the wrong letters on Pages. I have the standard qwerty layout too...Any ideas?
My mom has ms-wondering if I could use her old handwriting and this app to allow her to "write" again...

There's actually a few companies out there that will create personalized fonts. Shameless plug, I used to design them for vletter.com . It's 180 bucks for cursive though. To be fair, making someone's handwriting font actually look natural on a computer is more art than algorithm.

I know most every modern school by now must have stopped teaching cursive and yet the look of it when well done remains fashionable will I get a good payday with royalties for sharing?
I doubt it, and once digitized it will likely feel less personal.
With all due respect to values of open source culture for me to give this part of my own personal 'signature style' away doesn't make enough justifiable good sense to me.
I am interested somewhat in seeing what the end results will be like when others digitize their penmanship though.

I have serial killer handwriting. This may not be a great idea for me. It's like I can't decide if I want to print or use cursive.
I'm super disappointed, but I think the issue is more with my scanner at work. I set it to 600dpi, but it apparently did not scan as such, so my file came out crappy. Will have to do this another time with a better scanner.

Once I couldn't read a assignment in my own handwriting & I was the only one in class who did the homework. It was so embarrassing. Teacher asked me to read aloud if you can. i failed miserably.
If you can't write over the inner lines, what's the point? My handwriting is messy, if I write over the inner lines, it makes it look neater. I don't want it to look neater, I want it to look like my handwriting.

It'd be great to have a database of everybody's handwriting for solving crime or writing letters on behalf of others that would stand up in court against handwriting analysis.
Can anyone actually get this to work? It doesn't seem to matter what format I try to upload it in or what program the files comes out of, it refuses to accept my files.
I type so others don't have to desyfer my handwriting. Turning my chicken scratch into a font would negate all my efforts. My handwriting looks like I tried to write with my foot... and maybe my foot was broken at the time.

I seriously doubt my handwriting would be eligible to anyone. I remember my learner's permit had an absolutely horrific signature.
My take, but it doesn't work out very well for me. Most of my letters change form according to their neighbours, I also use ligatures in some combinations, and the high of the letters is usually smaller.

In undergrad, I broke my hand and the next day I had a test in a geology class. My hand was in a splint with all four fingers bound together, so I had to use both hands to move my pen in order to write. It took me the entirety of the time to take the test, and my handwriting was more legible than it had ever been, or since.
That day or the next day, I got a proper splint for the type of fracture that is was, which only bound up my ring finger and pinky, allowing me to write properly from then on (read: which allowed me to continue to write illegibly from then on).

I don't even understand how its possible to not be able to read your own handwriting. There's like 25 or so letters give or take, it's not that hard!
But I did take out a book from my high schools library and took an hour one day practicing how to write letters and never had an issue after because my handwriting was pretty atrocious.

Back in highschool I had the same problem with my handwriting, and found that writing my tests in pencil usually resulted in me not being able to read it without really trying to decipher it. Except that with pen ink I could read it back. Too bad many of them asked for pencil since they didn't want to see a bunch of crossed out mistakes.
It was a blessing when the federal government rolled out their laptop program. It didn't fix my test problems, but note-taking was far easier and I often had class time to work on assignments, getting them done sooner. I worked faster (Runescape honed my typing speed back in the day) and wasn't limited by computer lab numbers.
Though knowing a few years later how much that cost my mum has left me with disdain for the school's extortionist price. Only when I left did they fix it! I was a part of the successful trial run of nearly senior students, so I reaped the benefits for 2 years.

As someone with bad handwriting, it's not just that the letters are messy. They're not consistent. I can easily read my own handwriting if it's something I'm currently working on. But if I go to try and read something I wrote yesterday, (or worse, last year) it will be incredibly difficult to decipher. The spaces between each letter and each word are always different sizes, each letter is shaped differently each time I write it, different pressure on the pencil each time.
Another thing that complicates it is the fact that my Us, Ns, and Ms all are completely indistinguishable. Frustrating.

When I was in Elementary school, trust me, my teachers tried their best to change it, and I wanted it to be better too. I did so many of those handwriting books. I can tell you my handwriting now is indistinguishable from when I was in kindergarten. I just don't have the ability to evenly space out letters or to draw them consistently.

Im currently studying programming, and we do loads of tests on a laptop. However 1 guy lets us take tests on paper, last monday we had to write down a full node.js application. Luckily his handwriting is quite similar to mine, he never complained to me about it so :)

I am quite dyslexic and when I was in secondary school after I finally got my diagnosis they let me rent out a school laptop everyday for class work and I had one in exams. Everything was blocked apart from word and paint, including the internet and there was no spell or grammar checker on it. Because I got a different one every morning and gave it back at the end of each school day I couldn't hack it or re-install the OS and the exam one was set up for me before I entered the room and everyone with laptops was in a separate room with a woman whose only job was to walk around and check we were only doing our tests.

As a nearly 31 year old, I would argue it gets worse because you write by hand significantly less often than you do during school.
The only thing I'm obligated to write by hand is my signature. Everything else can be typed (between a computer, phone, and tablet).

I felt the same way for a long time. One day I just decided to start working on it. I switched to cursive (agonizing to begin again... Was so slow!) but just forced myself to keep to it. At work, I would take notes on everything I could to work handwriting practice into the day so I didn't have to take time at home. No abbreviations, etc. You'd be surprised how well you can do. In a short span, I had 3 or 4 people specifically comment on how nice my handwriting looked. Give it a go!

I found writing in cursive helpful for my dyslexia, I don't transpose any of the cursive letters. Writing in print I'll flip lowercase "d" and "b" every time. I'm also left handed, so the penmanship struggle is real, but my cursive always looks nice!

My handwriting is finally becoming legible. I'm 55. I gave up trying to write cursive in high school (about age 15) because I could barely read it myself. Switched to one letter at a time printing. I'm pretty good at it, and pretty fast. But a nice script that flows and is legible would be faster, and would, you know, complete a thing I set out to do half a century ago. But it's a lot of work. Many hours of practice. I really don't care enough, and I'm OK with that.
What's changed is that I'm using a keyboard app on my phone that converts handwriting to text. I started with my usual block print. Works OK. Then I realized that the app can interpret my insult-to-the-concept-of-written-language cursive script. It's like an anti-kismet. If you can read my handwriting, you must be a robot. But I can lay down that script faster than I can print, and the app actually interprets it more accurately than my printing.
So now I'm writing cursive quite a bit, with nobody criticizing me. And it's getting better. Still not particularly legible, but smoother and prettier, and the legible part is improving too.

I think that's very good for unlined paper which it appears to be. If there are lines I still think that's pretty good, it's very clear and flowing, and the spacing and consistency is great. I don't much about the guy, but his writing is very precise and orderly.

I'm the same, was hellbent on developing my own perfect style as a kid. Still hand write my notes at uni as a learning boost, and it keeps the practice up. Means I always have the most impressive birthday cards for people. Weird part was at about 25 I saw my dad's handwriting (well I'd seen it before but never really "looked") and it's nearly IDENTICAL. Not sure if hereditary hand shape or inadvertent viewing when younger, but creeped me out!

Really? I'm literate in a couple languages and they all look the same- but they're also more similar than Farsi and Spanish, thinking about it. Greek and Cyrillic are a lot closer to Roman letters.

It does my heart good to hear of a female with shitty handwriting. My handwriting has good days and bad days but is still mostly illegible -- my wife can't read it at all (which comes in handy sometimes). In the fourth grade, it was so bad that I myself couldn't read it -- which was the impetus for teaching myself to type. All the girls, though, had beautiful handwriting: loops and swirls like something out of Pink Unicorn Land, and -- true to the stereotype -- sometimes little hearts instead of the dots over the i's. ("Ever notice the j's don't get hearts? This is I-ism! Anti-J discrimination!" <eyeroll>)

You have to just practice a lot. My hand writing isnt great, but its okay and I didnt really get good until college when I started writing a lot but also I practiced a little bit 5 minutes here 5 minutes there just writing some extra words or writing he letters of hte alphabet. It really helps, trying watching a video online of people writing the letter so you can see exactly how they do it.

My biggest issue is I can't be consistent. None of my handwritten letters are standardized. I can't imagine my writing could be turned into a font, because each time I write the letter f (for example), it looks completely different.

For a Christmas present for my mom this year, I took some of my dad's handwriting from a letter he wrote me when I was young and pieced the words and letters together, sampling throughout, to recreate a poem that we had hanging in our front entryway in his handwriting. I thought it was the best I could do since he passed this last August. The way I had to make every letter different, and adjust everything to fit just so it would look like it was actually written by hand was painstaking but ultimately worth it. I would recommend it, but you can't just use a font to achieve it without some serious time involved.

I was thinking the same thing. In cursive the connection from "a" to "f" or "a" to "d" is massively different, in one case the upwards swing forms a forwards loop that makes half the next letter, in the other a backwards swing to make half the next letter.

Somehow the entire Gaster thing manages to be bloody terrifying. I think 90% of it is that Toby managed perfectly to hide the stuff away and actually make it look like it was meant to be deleted.
Looking at the files and the ways they can be loaded, it genuinely looks similar to when I used to go hunting through the filesystems and code for older games looking for unused content.

So, I turned in an essay in wingdings once, circa 7th grade. Our teacher said we could use any font we wanted for it. She wasn't impressed, and I got docked a whole letter grade for it, because she made me turn it in again in Times New Roman, 12pt, double spaced, and gave me exact margins and all that jazz to use. She considered it late because the original paper wasn't a proper paper.
Totally fuckin' worth it. My entire class knows me as "the kid who turned in pictures for a writing assignment"

In art school one of my professors called my handwriting "serial killeresque" so just being able to draw doesn't necessarily mean good penmanship. I can replicate any font, do sign painting and traditional calligraphy, my actual handwritings looks like a Batman villains.

I was planning on doing this with my late father's handwriting. He was an architect and had such neat penmanship. I miss seeing his writing. When he died my brother sister and I were trying to figure out what to do with his ashes. We finally settled on sending out for one of those homemade hourglass kits and putting them in there since he was always late. It would be great to have the inscription with his writing. We would put about one hour but of course it would be totally off. I guess it's time to follow through with this plan now. Better late then never!

As long as you still have some of his papers, you could probably still do this!
The good thing about "architect" handwriting is that you can always find neatly separated letters in any decent-size sample. Even if the examples you had were in pencil, it would not be difficult at all to scan them, isolate the letters you'd need, and then "thicken" them and add contrast (if needed) to make them appear just like pen (that's at least if you want to do it like this website; if not, vLetter would likely be able to help you out).
Actually, when I first came across MyScriptFont today on here, the very first thing I thought of was "cloning" my dad's handwriting as well--he's a graphic designer, but his handwriting has always looked exactly like an architect's (I don't know why--maybe he read some books about Frank Lloyd Wright as a kid?). He's always written like that, and he has his own distinctive style. I tried copying him for years as a kid too (until it became apparent just how cumbersome it was to write my school papers in all-caps--not to mention, my teachers didn't exactly enjoy reading it ;) ).
As long as you had some good samples to work with, I don't see why this couldn't be done in a matter of hours! Even if it was pencil (might take a little more work, but not much).

Architects have great writing. I used to help one frequently at a photolab I worked at and he remarked on my writing. I had taken an architecture class, coupled with picking up my mom's habit of writing in all caps, I had a similar style.
I really love the idea of the hourglasses. While I find keeping someone's ashes a hair morbid, having them in such a unique vessel is rather interesting.

Am architect. Cannot confirm. Some do, yes, and if they do its often memorable and very individual. And we all learned at one point how to do legible lettering on plans (hint: write very slowly and make an effort to draw proper shapes). I am not a fixed width font guy personally, but this font doesn't allow you to camelCase because the lowercase characters are the same as the uppercase ones from what I can see (and I don't like separating by _ or -) so reading names might be a little hard

So shit writing on a prescription actually ended up hurting me a while back. My pharmacist read bisprolol (beta blocker) as lisinopril (blood vessel dilator) and mixed up the prescriptions. My blood pressure tanked with the lisinopril dosage I was taking because I was needing the bisoprolol for high heart rate issues (140+ rate when resting). I would get up out of bed and pass out because my blood pressure would go through the floor, and I couldn't walk to my university classes because I kept passing out if I walked to quickly or it was too hot out. Was kinda scary when I figured out the problem myself because my doctor didn't know what was wrong since he didn't know I had been given the wrong medication (I didn't either until I looked into what lisinopril did to your body). So, I really appreciate your legible handwriting.

Personally, I've done this and using a blunt tipped sharpie, like I believe it recommends, leaves a result that does not look like something anyone would write, as well most documents that you would write in your handwriting would also need a signature. Not saying that it couldn't happen I just personally believe it's unlikely.

In the UK we're taught 'joined up writing'; the letter forms are generally kept the same as if they were individually drawn, but I think connecting them allows much more of an individualised scrawl to emerge so the overall effect isn't a million miles away.

Just writing out the individual letters doesn't mean the end result will look like your actual handwriting. For example, everyone has various letter pairs that they write uniquely. One of mine is the letter pair "er" where the end of the e extends and forms the r. This program can't accurately mimic that type of thing

I am American and learned cursive in school... over time it turned into joined up. My kids learned cursive at school but no real emphasis on using it because computers. I was just thinking the other day how sad it will be when handwriting becomes obsolete.

Joined-up and cursive aren't the same thing. Cursive is what you're thinking of, while joined-up is a faster-to-write hybrid of printing and cursive.
My cursive is illegible, but my printing always leads to joined-up for speed.

Don't agree joined-up is cursive.
You have handwriting that is printed - each letter separate.
Or cursive handwriting is the letters in each word linked together.
Joined up is what cursive was called when you learn to write in grade two cause cursive is a tricky word back then.
Personally I think the art of handwriting is dying. I am proud of my hand writing but continue to spend time perfecting it. I don't understand why people with handwriting that is illegible don't put in the effort to write neatly and clearly.
Doesn't it adversely impact your ability to effectively communicate as a human being?

Um, no. I never heard the phrase "joined-up" until I went on the internet and saw a Brit use it and it was explained. So you may go and tell those people that they are wrong in what they call three different types of handwriting (fourth type excluded: block letters).
Cursive was called cursive when I learned it in grade three. "Joined-up" did not enter my knowledge until 5 or so years ago.
Cursive is not simply "linked together", it is a prescripted way of linking things together. My writing is not cursive, because I don't like a lot of the style in cursive, so I use joined-up letters to write. they are distinctly different.
And penmanship, a word you seem to avoid, has never been important to me.

Seems, yes, but it isn't. Not only does it teach important fine motor skills, it's also simpler than print, and allows one to develop a personal, efficient-yet-legible hand-writing better than learning print first:
It's easier mostly because in cursive scripts you only have to worry about two dimensions -- those of the paper -- and not additionally care about lifting and lowering the pen, which you need to do in print because otherwise you'd be crossing all over your letters.
(Of course, you still need to dot your 'i's and cross your 't's but overall, you have to worry much less).
Once you have that skill, you can move on to print, or, rather, because that's simpler: Print with ligatures.
The only reason it is percieved as "hard" is because the letter forms do not match up with what's printed in books. But that's just the Latin script for you, it also contains other silliness (like having capital letters).

I've yet to see a published report that proved that cursive improved motor skills any more than just trying to write legible print. I know plenty of people with shitty handwriting but have awesome hand eye coordination and dexterity with their hands (assembling teeny tiny electronics circuits)

It saddens me that they stopped teaching cursive. I had a TEENAGER watch me write something in cursive and stare at it blankly and ask what it said. Side note: I have nice handwriting!! I was disheartened. This translates to signatures, too! Teenagers are signing their names using individually spaced (and primary-school-looking printing) letters! WTF?

I don't understand why that would be a requirement. Wouldn't that make it so much harder to read and grade all those papers? I guess if someone's writing is illegible it makes it easier to auto-fail them.
I don't even really understand the historical/cultural reasons for why cursive was seen as the professional/high-class style of writing. Even for people who read and write cursive all day, it's still harder to read than print if a person's got poor handwriting, and you still get professional people that have super-shit handwriting. Doctors can literally cause people to die due to mishaps related to bad handwriting.
I understand why people might use it in their personal notes/writing, I don't understand why that was the default for communicating with other people.

I looked up joined up since we don't teach that here, and that seems to be it. My cursive and print are shitty since I haven't written in cursive nor print since I was a child. I wish I could write normally.... I can only write conjoined writing because it was drilled into my skull between the 2nd and 9th grade. In some cases it was MANDATORY to write conjoined so now I just can't write normally. And to top it off, my conjoined writing is so bad that even I can't read it sometimes.
Edit: Here's the font I made out of my handwriting. I did all of this with my mouse, trying to mimic my actual writing as closely as possible. It looks like shit but if properly conjoined, it would look even worse, just like my real handwriting.

I honestly hate cursive. A lot of my coworkers use it and it takes me like 3 times longer to read. I guess it's faster if you're good at it, but I haven't used it in almost 20 years so it's like trying to solve a riddle whenever I see it.

Yup. I used a sharpie for a "bold" text variant. It's neat, although double letters make it pretty obvious that it isn't handwritten. And it's pretty easy to put the font in your system files so you can use it in any program. Of course, others can't see it unless you print it out or screenshot it, because they don't have your font file on their computer.

My daughter is amazed by my formal cursive, they actually don't teach it in her school. I guess it's a soon-to-be lost art. We actually had separate spelling and handwriting classes in addition to English class, which was reading and grammar. I'm teaching it to my kids now.

I did this once for a paper in my world history class a couple years ago, my teacher said it must be hand written and it was about the 50th essay we'd written all year so I was sick of it. I decided to try this out and it worked.
When I brought it to class the only thing he asked was why it was on printer paper and not lined, the excuse I gave was that I was out of lined paper at my house, lol. I got a 95 on the paper and he never said anything about it being typed.

I've been looking for something like this. I occasionally make comic strips and stuff like that, and lettering is such a pain in the butt if I want to digitize/color them.
I tried a couple different solutions that do this same thing, mostly with poor results (letters not being fully represented, being misaligned). People seem to be having pretty good results with this from what I see, I'll have to try it out.

There's also a mobile/tablet app! I used the app on my tablet so I could just use my stylus and save time. When I was in a LDR, my boyfriend and I used each other's handwriting as our fonts for texts. Always made me smile seeing a message from him in his actual handwriting.

A couple years ago, I made a font with my grandma's handwriting and even had her draw little doodles for some of the characters I knew I'd never use. I typed out some of her recipes in her handwriting, submitted the PDF to be printed onto fabric, and made pot holders out of it for the family.
She had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and I'm glad I thought to do it before her handwriting started to worsen.

Books on making comics usually have a chapter about this, and they all recommend that you actually scan at least two different copies of each letter, as re-using the exact same letter all the time looks odd (especially if they appear in the same word).

In cursive is indispensable for note taking. It's so much faster than print. I think most of my generation has two scripts, the formal schoolbook cursive and a freehand, doctors script that only the writer can decipher.

Just tried it on mac, it has all the letters weirdly shifted. It shows "the quick brown fox jumps." correctly on the site, but installing the font just gives me the wrong letters on Pages. I have the standard qwerty layout too...Any ideas?

There's actually a few companies out there that will create personalized fonts. Shameless plug, I used to design them for vletter.com . It's 180 bucks for cursive though. To be fair, making someone's handwriting font actually look natural on a computer is more art than algorithm.

I know most every modern school by now must have stopped teaching cursive and yet the look of it when well done remains fashionable will I get a good payday with royalties for sharing?
I doubt it, and once digitized it will likely feel less personal.
With all due respect to values of open source culture for me to give this part of my own personal 'signature style' away doesn't make enough justifiable good sense to me.
I am interested somewhat in seeing what the end results will be like when others digitize their penmanship though.

I can type 90-100 wpm. I learned on a manual typewriter before a computer.

I type so others don't have to desyfer my handwriting. Turning my chicken scratch into a font would negate all my efforts. My handwriting looks like I tried to write with my foot... and maybe my foot was broken at the time.

My take, but it doesn't work out very well for me. Most of my letters change form according to their neighbours, I also use ligatures in some combinations, and the high of the letters is usually smaller. http://imgur.com/vi4o7ku
