I never hear of people that have even heard of it. I read the english translation because we picked it up at the library one day when I was a kid cuz my dad (a huge reader) needed a book to read. We grabbed it as a joke cuz it looked so stupid. Hes like sure why not. He fell in love with it. Before he was even done with it i started reading it.
It is my 2nd favorite book ever after Rumo. Rumo because it's a bit more of a set story, more of a steady plotline adventure tale.
I tried a few other books of his and never really got into them though.
If Rumo somehow got picked up and made into a well done movie (or bluebear) I would die a happy man. Then again I often wondered how the would do it. The best, but least practical, would be a somewhat dark cgi movie. Still childish in some aspects, but still grasping the creepiness and weirdness in the book (or at least how I envisioned some of the environments and characters).
I haven't really met anyone that has read it. I read Bluebear because my cousin was given the book by her teacher because the teacher wanted more people to know about it. Rump is my favorite too. I've been considering adapting Zamonia into a Pathfinder RPG setting.
His other Zamonia books do have a different feel than Rumo and Bluebear but I still love them. The Alchemaster's Apprentice is probably my 3rd favorite.
I don't think they have any plans to do it since apparently there is a lot of German culture stuff that will go over the heads of non-German readers. There was a fan translation going on but it stopped only a few chapters in.

That's like my all time favorite book. I didn't even know that they translated it to english... i always imagined it to be super hard to translate cause he just makes up a bunch of terms and words.

I love Walter Moers, he is basically my favorite author. I really didn't know he was popular internationally. Moers is actually releasing a new novel autumn this year ("Die Insel der Tausend Leuchttรผrme"). I'm really excited for it.
Popular internationally? He's popular with those that have read his books but sadly not many have read his books. Rumo is my favorite book.

Serious question, how can you be an internet user and not know what a Snorlax looks like, especially with all the recent Pokรฉmon Go craze? Do you live under a rock? Are you merely pretending not to know Pokรฉmons?
I've even played Pokemon go for many weeks and I don't know what snorlax is, or if it's even a real character. There are hundreds of them, right? That's like saying "you've been to 3 soccer matches how, how do you not know all the players?"
I played Pokรจmons and don't know many of those mentioned as well, but come on, Snorlax is REALLY iconic and known even from those who have never touched the series
Since he doesn't know most Pokemon he's likely just ignoring his limited base knowledge and drawing what the name sounds like it should be, just to keep in the spirit of the thread
Yeah. If he in that specific day thinks "Vana" (not a Pokรฉmon name) sounds like someone with long blonde hair, he'd draw someone with long blonde hair. It is'nt even specifically always based on whatever English words the name looks like.
I live on the Internet. I have its tubes running through my veins. I have two teenage boys who played PG constantly (their interest is noticeably waning over the last week or so). I even downloaded it on to my iPhone and tried it out for a few days (not my thing). I have no fucking clue what a snorlax is. Or any of the other critters for that matter. The only one I would be able to identify is Pikachu.

Germany, for some weird reason it was decided that in the german edition all the pokemon names get changed. So whenever someone is talking about pokemon in any other language, we are forever confused.
Pikachu is still Pikachu but most of the names are changed.
The english names would have been totally fine, it's not like german pokemon sound any less strange to germans than english pokemon.
I found an online pokedex that lists the names (it seems french also got many names). http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/001.shtml
I will have a quick look over the first generation to see how many remained the same.
So far:
Kokuna, Arbok, Pikachu, Raichu, all 6 Niorans, Vulpix, Zubat, Golbat, Paras, Parasect, Abra, Kadabra, (Ponita), Magneton, Gengar, Onix, Hypno, Krabby , Kingler, Tangela, Starmie, Magmar, Pinsir, Tauros, Lapras, Ditto, Kabuto, Kabutops, Aerodactly, Zapdos, Dratini, (Mewtu), Mew
So 38 out of 151 are still the same, so they only changed roughly 75% of the names, less than I thought.
Have you ever played the part of spore where your creature first emerges from water and starts meeting? That entire stage of the game has undeniable similarities. I'm not saying they're exactly alike but the playstyle, artstyle, and environments are similar.
Prcedurally generated planets, solar systems, and creatures. Seems pretty similar to Spore to me. How much if No Man's Sky have you played? I'm about 40 hours in and it definitely has objective similarities to spore. You'd be a fool not to notice.

I grew up close friends with a few artistic people so I saw what they were capable of when they were young... they sucked when they started. Even when people say "Oh so and so has natural talent!" because they showed up in art class doing awesome they probably spent a ton of free time at home doing it on their own.
It's like any other skill, lots and lots of hours and you'll get good.
This has always bothered me way more than it should. My friends moan away about how they just don't have the talent like I do and can barely draw a stick figure.
No. I just don't show you the 99% of tripe that I make daily. I dedicated a lot of time to get to this point. If it was important to you, you could too.

Same with people who tell me they could never play an instrument. It's more about having grown up in a family that did choir/piano/guitar to pique my interest early on and having had an orchestra program at school, and after that picking up other instruments on my own. That's a lot of hours in "music" before I even pick up a new instrument, but the fundamentals of rhythm and similar tunings or concepts like fretting chords make it easier to transition from one stringed instrument to the next passably well. Ask me to play a trumpet and it'll sound like a tortured cat, though, but if i put in enough hours it might eventually sound decent.
People don't realize that the first step to getting good at something is to try and suck a little bit less each time and slowly make progress till you're happy with your finished product.
Thanks. This was really motivating. I hate that it's taking so long to learn and often give up because of it. I really wish there was some trick or shortcut and I know there isn't one. Time just frustrates me because it always feels like it's wasted when I don't produce anything worth seeing.

Yeah people see the final result. What they dont see is the thousands of hours of frustration, or the 80 hours spent on a single painting. "Talented" people dont exist, sure talent can mitigate maybe 100 hours of practice but in the end the guy who draws 8 hrs a day is gonna be insanely skilled no matter what.
One of the best artists I've ever met makes a point to still draw for 30 minutes a day. When he started he was horrible.
Also, look at the evolution of Bill Watterson's art from Calvin and Hobbes. His first book the art was decent but by the last one it was incredible. I love seeing his skill evolve.
Yup. It's actually a bit frustrating, because I worked my ass off for the skills I have now, and acting like it's something I was born with really minimizes that.
Rather than some mystically distributed innate gifts, I think certain people are naturally inclined towards enjoying a particular thing, like art or music or cooking, and those are the people that push through when it's hard and keep pursuing it, so they end up being better at it than everyone else.
meh, it's mostly practice with a dash of talent for good measure. If you (or I) spent as much time practicing as we do playing vidya games, we'd be good at it too.
Then you can't really say "meh," since it isn't easy practicing, even if it's your passion. I know like it seems like it's "just practice," but damn if it doesn't take time and effort.
really? it isn't easy practicing drawing? you need a pen and paper and can do it pretty much anywhere when you have some down time, specially caricatures such as this.
If it were oil painting on canvas, sure. Practicing drumming, sure. Long distance marathon, sure.
You seem to be establishing some authority on the subject. I will admit that I am speaking from experience regarding other art forms (music mostly). I am happy to concede my point if you can establish that most people will enjoy filling their spare time drawing or will have the drive to do so.
To me, having something accessible doesn't mean it's easy to practice it. I need to find the drive to do it and I feel like it's easier to lose interest than it is to continue practicing until you're good.
It is technically simple, much like how the piano is technically simple: you press buttons and it makes a sound.
Drawing, in my opinion, is the skill of understanding how points in 3D space map to a plane. Our brains love to fill in the extra information about depth--even when you close one eye, your brain can still figure out what's behind what without moving your head. It's very difficult to train yourself to say "I know this part of the object is further away, but in my visual plane, it's actually above, not further.
There's also light and shadow, which our brain tends to filter out in order to present objects as a single color. That's what happened with the blue and gold dress.
To be able to create shapes that are plausible in reality entirely from your head is a level above that again. The skill of 2D art is mostly in the artist's head.

I live on the Internet. I have its tubes running through my veins. I have two teenage boys who played PG constantly (their interest is noticeably waning over the last week or so). Pikachu is still Pikachu but most of the names are changed.
The english names would have been totally fine, it's not like german pokemon sound any less strange to germans than english pokemon.
I found an online pokedex that lists the names (it seems french also got many names).

Prcedurally generated planets, solar systems, and creatures. Seems pretty similar to Spore to me. How much if No Man's Sky have you played? I'm about 40 hours in and it definitely has objective similarities to spore. You'd be a fool not to notice.

Correct, but in order to put food on the table these people will have to get good or people just won't hire them. Agnescecile is most likely a freelance artist.

I grew up close friends with a few artistic people so I saw what they were capable of when they were young... they sucked when they started. Even when people say "Oh so and so has natural talent!" because they showed up in art class doing awesome they probably spent a ton of free time at home doing it on their own.
It's like any other skill, lots and lots of hours and you'll get good.

This has always bothered me way more than it should. My friends moan away about how they just don't have the talent like I do and can barely draw a stick figure.
No. I just don't show you the 99% of tripe that I make daily. I dedicated a lot of time to get to this point. If it was important to you, you could too.

Same with people who tell me they could never play an instrument. It's more about having grown up in a family that did choir/piano/guitar to pique my interest early on and having had an orchestra program at school, and after that picking up other instruments on my own. That's a lot of hours in "music" before I even pick up a new instrument, but the fundamentals of rhythm and similar tunings or concepts like fretting chords make it easier to transition from one stringed instrument to the next passably well. Ask me to play a trumpet and it'll sound like a tortured cat, though, but if i put in enough hours it might eventually sound decent.
People don't realize that the first step to getting good at something is to try and suck a little bit less each time and slowly make progress till you're happy with your finished product.

Thanks. This was really motivating. I hate that it's taking so long to learn and often give up because of it. I really wish there was some trick or shortcut and I know there isn't one. Time just frustrates me because it always feels like it's wasted when I don't produce anything worth seeing.

To a point, I agree with you.
But I have super shaky hands and shitty eyesight, that glasses, contacts, and surgery won't correct. I'll never be an artist.
But you're right that a lot of the "natural talent" is 98% hard work, and 2% just really really enjoying that type of work.

Yeah people see the final result. What they dont see is the thousands of hours of frustration, or the 80 hours spent on a single painting. "Talented" people dont exist, sure talent can mitigate maybe 100 hours of practice but in the end the guy who draws 8 hrs a day is gonna be insanely skilled no matter what.

One of the best artists I've ever met makes a point to still draw for 30 minutes a day. When he started he was horrible.
Also, look at the evolution of Bill Watterson's art from Calvin and Hobbes. His first book the art was decent but by the last one it was incredible. I love seeing his skill evolve.

Yup. It's actually a bit frustrating, because I worked my ass off for the skills I have now, and acting like it's something I was born with really minimizes that.
Rather than some mystically distributed innate gifts, I think certain people are naturally inclined towards enjoying a particular thing, like art or music or cooking, and those are the people that push through when it's hard and keep pursuing it, so they end up being better at it than everyone else.

meh, it's mostly practice with a dash of talent for good measure. If you (or I) spent as much time practicing as we do playing vidya games, we'd be good at it too.

really? it isn't easy practicing drawing? you need a pen and paper and can do it pretty much anywhere when you have some down time, specially caricatures such as this.
If it were oil painting on canvas, sure. Practicing drumming, sure. Long distance marathon, sure.
But fucking drawing?

You seem to be establishing some authority on the subject. I will admit that I am speaking from experience regarding other art forms (music mostly). I am happy to concede my point if you can establish that most people will enjoy filling their spare time drawing or will have the drive to do so.
To me, having something accessible doesn't mean it's easy to practice it. I need to find the drive to do it and I feel like it's easier to lose interest than it is to continue practicing until you're good.

It is technically simple, much like how the piano is technically simple: you press buttons and it makes a sound.
Drawing, in my opinion, is the skill of understanding how points in 3D space map to a plane. Our brains love to fill in the extra information about depth--even when you close one eye, your brain can still figure out what's behind what without moving your head. It's very difficult to train yourself to say "I know this part of the object is further away, but in my visual plane, it's actually above, not further.
There's also light and shadow, which our brain tends to filter out in order to present objects as a single color. That's what happened with the blue and gold dress.
To be able to create shapes that are plausible in reality entirely from your head is a level above that again. The skill of 2D art is mostly in the artist's head.
